- On this video we take the 71 Barracuda and install the entire rear exterior panels from the doors back on this E body and walk you through the basic process of assembling the metal on one of these cars. I go over some tips and tricks that might help you with assembling and welding the Quarter panels, rear valence panel, tail panel, trunk gutters, spoiler, rear bumper and everything else that goes along with the rear exterior body parts. This should give you a basic idea on how to build the 70-74 e body cuda and challengers even if the panels will be slightly different shape.

I had an orange 383 '71 'Cuda with the billboard stripes back in the day. Wish I still had it!

Incredible instructional E Body assembly. Really would like to connect with you a lil down the road for my 71 Challenger. First thing I need is a frame jig. I don’t mind making it I just need good reference for the measurements. Great work! Love the car, I can’t wait to get my challenger to this point
Sounds like a plan and thank you, personally If I know the car has never been hit or not really rusted away I will drop a plumb bob down to factory e body points and then just cut some metal at the height I want and mount the car that way as long as its all supported level and not all trying to sag it anywhere.
Yes that’s all good no wrecks or rust although I have to put the frame rails in the car. Last guy put a new floor in the car and the he ripped out the original frame rails so I need a jig with the right mounting points to fit the rails to and then attach the jig to the front (k-frame) location mount. I don’t want to go off the tack welds to place the frame rails. He did it backwards so I gotta undo a bunch so I think a jig would get me on the right track. I do have new Goodmark frame rails to go in the car along with every piece of sheet metal made for this car. The original owner abandoned the build after the original motor and tranny was stolen! So he dumped it and I’m gonna make a driver restomod. Your instructions are so clear and directional. I can’t wait to get where I can follow your instruction. Jig, frame rails, attached and positive the car is where it needs to be to begin the tear down. Thanks a bunch for any info I can resource to make a good frame jig for a 71 Challenger
@@skipsims2384 Ah I see now, it is very frustrating when you get a car that was worked on by someone else that dove right into it but didn't really know and messed up the process. I have also been where you are trying to fix someone elses mess and feel your frustration. I know I have a 74 challenger coming in the shop in the next 3 months or so and on first glance the car looked like it is in decent shape so been going back and forth weather or not I will JIG up the car. Saying that I just picked up new metal for a JIG last week so I was planning on putting it on one for the simple fact it will be easier to move around. If i do that I will try and do a video on building the JIG for the car and tryin to mount it in place with some measurements that might help you in the process. Your getting off to a great start. I see from your builds that you are talented enough to build about anything so I'm sure this is gonna be a bad asz ride when you get it all buttoned up. Looking really good, I had same experience boxes come in perfect but have parts damaged inside I think they ship them damaged they don't care as long as they make their money.
Thank you and I believe you are correct some of these places know its a challenge to undo all the packing and most (like myself) will just peek in there and they don't have to deal with it after the delivery date passes.
It just so happens I am in the process of doing these steps for a 70 Dart and your comment about having to work with the new panels is spot on. Great to see how you resolved issues. It that primer weldable etch primer? Did you remove the primer where you spot welded?
Thanks for the comment, the red primer on the car is just a red etching primer that will protect the bare metal primer before rusting. I use it because Lacquer thinner takes it off easy when I am ready for epoxy. Saying that the grey primer used in a lot of my videos is weld through primer. Usually I will only try and add weld through primer between the panels and try and keep where I am welding clean on the topside. It doesn't always work out that way but thats my goal.

Thank you this car is for a customer, however saying that it is someone very close to me.
Question: When gaping the doors when they’re stripped, then adding the glass, regulators, panels and hardware, do you have to re-adjust?
I will try and set them on the final assembly slightly higher, but yes there have been times I had to go back in and readjust. But when the door "sags" them adjusted back the gap will fall back into place. Usually worse case in that scenario I will have to leave the top adjustment bolt in the door loosen all the other bolts on the pillar and just pick up on it in the back and it usually fixes it.
We're the bow planes and spoiler primarily for aesthetics or were they truly effective in providing downforce?
Most spoilers I have seen do play a part o downforce, saying that most of the cars that were sold in dealerships and this one now will it ever really benefit from it, probably not.
Thanks, Did you use the 2 holes on the bottom on that rear Valance ? I cant find any diagrams on it besides the Service Manual that barely shows anything on that ?
Yes on the Cuda there is 1 hole in the top on the tail panel behind the bumper on the corner and two lower ones on the sides.

Did you put the bolt studs & Clips on the Rear Valance Panel or on the Quarters, I can not find any good Diagram on the 70-74 Cuda Rear Valance ?
I put the clips on the valance then its easier to put the bolts in from the quarters vs the other way

I get completely sucked into the cuda episodes :o) Would a spot welder help or would it stop the adjustment process? I’m guessing the factory had a lot of jigs.
I feel the resistance spot welder (one of the quality ones) is the way to go and in the next level restoration. I feel it eliminates the grinding and cleanup step and also let get into areas better as they are pinching and welding at the same time. That is eventually what i might be working towards purchasing in the future if all things go well.
I am not sure if ebody vins are on the trunk lip like abodies. Just wondering how you deal with this?
Yes the e bodies have then stamped on the trunk gutters. I haven't had an issue with VIN numbers or the state fraud and theft, they have been out doing vehicle inspections before from stuff we have bought and sold in the past. We don't do VIN swaps here in the shop and only honest restorations even if it is replacing a lot of metal it has always been an original car . Transferring the VIN stampings over is up to the owner if they aren't too rusted away in the first place or I will give it back to them for their documentation on clearing up any issues that may arise.

Not too much but now and days with how most of these cars rust away I feel its better doing it this way knowing you have a safe, structurally sound car you can drive vs something your trying all you can to keep original.
