@@ottomakinen13 Boogeyman translates to mörkö in finnish. Mörkö is a name of the character, but since this character isn't known abroad, and there is an actual translation, I'd prefer it was translated this way.
Marko Anttila became a folk hero during this tournament, earning the nickname "Mörkö." Roughly translates as The Groke. He is over 200cm tall player who was never known for his game breaking scoring, fluid skating or smooth hands. Actually quite the opposite, as he didn't really score that much, and his skating looks very stiff. He was a lumberjack on his teams, doing the heavy lifting behind scoring. Playing reliably defensively, and contributing some offense. Usually on 3rd line role. Something just lit up inside him 2019 when he donned on that Lion jersey, and the rest is history. He scored multiple _HUGE_ goals for this team to even stay in the tournament. He was absolutely pivotal for winning it. After this blazing spring, he went back to his day job of being a realiable two way steamroller. Finnish ice hockey fans often state that Finland plays the best when they are the underdogs. Anttila embodied this spirit by captaining this ultimate underdog team to the world championship, in a amazing rags to riches story. Thus, another Lion legend is born.
Whole Finland went crazy after the win. I remember when I went to the town center and random people ran to hug me and gave high fives. In a small town. :D
Imagine having the entire crowd of Finnish fans doubting your chances, being teased by your number one rival, Sweden, and then proving everyone wrong by winning the World Championship in unforgettable style
+ Hakanpää and Kiviranta. Also Lammikko went back for two seasons and many guys clearly stuck on NHL GMs minds because Jokiharju got second chance by Buffalo and is still playing and Lehtonen, Vehviläinen, Manninen & Lindbohm had a shot in the big leagues later on
And this applies to all team sports. We even have an inter-country track and field event, Finland vs. Sweden, every year, which is truly unique and is not organized anywhere else in the world.
I am a Finn who lives in Sweden and my team is Örebro. Three of the Finnish players played together in my team a couple of seasons: Anttila, Manninen and Sallinen. I have watched these games several times and still get emotional. So proud!
I've never even been the biggest sport person, but even seeing this video of my country's success, it lights me up. I remember watching the finals, it felt unreal and I was so hyped. It's beautiful witnessing something so impactful!
Damn, tears in my eyes! I was working as a volunteers in the icehockey wc games here in Tampere 2022 and 2023 and the best jobs ever! And the athmosphere..❤
I watch these Finland's tournaments every year and oh my days this was an absolutely insane, thrilling and emotional one! I burst in to tears after we won Sweden, Red Machine and finally Canada🎉 Even now watching this clip it gives me chills. Our President at the time invited the whole team to celebration ❤
says quite a lot that the past 2-3 years I haven't been as interested in Finnish hockey, 2022 world championship win and olympic gold didn't feel that special for me, but every time I see this video I can't hold back my tears. That win is a big part of Finnish hockey history and means a lot for so many 🥲
The first world championship for finland happened in 1995 though. This was the first time that Finland had ever won the world championship in ice hockey. This win orginated the finnish saying of "torilla tavataan" (aka meet you in the market). Until the fall of soviet union the soviet hockey team had been on a streak of championships.
man 2019 was an emotional championship. that game against the swedes was just so up and down i remember yelling almost the whole game. i'm pretty sure i started crying when that 4-4 shot went in a minute before the end of the 3rd period
Sweden and Finland has been the biggest rivals for decades. well...finland defeated all their biggest rivals (Sweden, Russia and Canada) in a row during the playoffs, but Sweden is considered as number one rival. I think 2022 Finland and Canada made history by playing in the finals three times in a row.
Man watching this actually brought tiers to my eyes. It was such a great Championship year. And truly it was not expected at all, they were saying if Finland' gets to top 4 they already won.
Sweden is the biggest, oldest and dearest sport rival. In track and field there's an annual competition between the two countries, first time held in 1925. In Floorball the competition between the two countries might be the most intense at the moment. Going head to head on sport arenas with Russia is always a war reenactment. In Ice hockey Canada is always the number one team to beat. Beating all of them in tournament playoffs is obviously memorable. While none of the Finnish players were NHL players, also Marko Anttila's 203 cm appearance was subject of ridicule. In line with that he was nicknamed as Mörkö/Mörkö-Marko, which is The Groke in English. He himself prefers to be called as Stretchy though, which is his older nickname. After the championship Mörkö was in post stamps, T-shirts, in a song, sausages etc. And he was one of the key players in the winning national teams to come. The Groke is this character from The Moomins: "Evolution of The Groke".
I was in that big crowd in Kaisaniemenpuisto Helsinki. I dont know what to compare. Everyone is on the streets, singing, making noice with car horns, climping on top of everything dangerously. Swimming in wrong places. Maybe it looked the same when berlin wall was destroyed 😅
That year was just crazy. I remember thinking that all our best players injured or missing. But I still had hope and love for finnish hockey and against all ods they won gold, its just amazing.
And i never forget 2022 ice hockey world championship and was played in Finland and Finland won the home games, so it was a memorable game and the whole year when it came to Olympic gold in the winter
When you look at the rosters in this tournament, we did not have a chance. Not even a slim one. Beating Sweden, Russia and Canada in the games that really mattered was really something that you would think could never happen. A bunch of rookies going against (and winning by the way) teams with rosters boasting with NHL stars... We were not supposed to win those games by any stretch of the imagination. Absolutely the greatest finnish ice hockey achievement by far if you asked me. So unlikely. But in sports, there is a thing to be said about the team spirit, the unity, the "one for all" spirit that sometimes magically beats all the odds. Gotta love sports for that reason alone ❤ You believe in yourself, your team and what you do, everything is possible 👍 It will not be easy and it is not supposed to be, but it is possible. Very thankful to have lived through this. Amazing times and still 5 years after brings me chills 😇
12:28 Please do remember/notice, that at that point the Finnish goalie had already lost his stick - and yet kept the goal clean for the crucial last 30 seconds (under damn dangerous fire).
Finland have now won the championship in these games 4 times. 2 times against Sweden, which is so sweet. And the most recent ones against Canada. 2022 against Canada was the 1st victory at home for Finland. That was a different kind of sweet. And still is.
I didn't see Finland wining, I was driving my husband to airport and when I drove back home all cars were honking and people were waving flags from windows. I'll always remember that feeling.
Mate! This is the same as Scotland (my favorite countrie In the world) winning England In semi finals. Cheers mate. Been In (hempden) Park with me mates from Annan. Love u scotts ❤
I still remember those games perfectly. The first time i thought this could actually happen is with 30sec left of the final game. Sweden game i thought there is no way we can win, same with russia, same with Canada it was 3 insane wins in a row against vastly superior opponents on paper and they found the extra gear every time.
You have to react to the celebrations of this victory, Helsinki went absolutely crazy😂 video is named WTF: Welcome To Finland 2019 ice hockey celebrations.
Finland - Sweden rivalry is the main event always in any competition. But Finland and Russia are the second biggest rivalry. And always is really nice to beat northern american teams also.
Finland-Sweden is our classic rivalry mach. I personally also dread matches against Russia since matches against them so often cause bigger injurys and more of them.
Yeah, there's three truly great Finnish hockey feats. 2004 World Cup final loss against Canada, 2006 olympic silver against Sweden. Still can't talk about that, and this one. Finland won our first world championship in 1995 with a team that frankly should've won it; Saku Koivu, Jere Lehtinen, Janne Niinimaa etc. After that we got to the finals about seven times and lost every time. 2011 the drought finally ended and another gold was mined. Satisfyingly sweeping Sweden 6-1 in the final. There's of course the olympic bronzes of -98 and -14, but aside than denying Gretzky an Olympic medal, just nice bonuses 😁
Hockey world cup and "Vappu" (the 1st of May celebration) are basically the starting point of summer in Finland. The biggest party was probably the first world cup win at 1995, when one hundred thousand fans entered to Helsinki Central market place "Kauppatori" within an hour after the match ended. It was THE party, because we won Sweden in the Final, in their home ice rink "Globen" at Stockholm. Then at 1995 also there was no "big" expectations for the team but there were major young talents in the team. 2019 this team was built from descent players of european hockey leagues but no real NHL stars were in the team.. And it always seems to be so, that if you fill your team with the "best stars", you don't get the "team" because the stars take the space in the rink and in the media and the pressure rises. However, if you build a team from good team players, put them in to right roles in the teams, you normally get better result. In the end, in Hockey there are 6-7 teams every year, who can win the world cup, that is Finland, Sweden, Czech, Russia, Usa, Canada and Slovakia. However, Switzerland and Germany have also get close to top level in recent years.. Both have also played in final match, no win yet, though.
World championships. Not World cup. World cup is a different tournament which is played irregularly and it has all the best players because the NHL is on a break when the World cup is on. Last time it was played back in 2016.
I was there, the whole tournament. I couldn't believe I was witnessing it, I thought I was in a dream. But it was real, and man what a journey it was through and through.
Initially, pretty much all the "experts" blamed the Finnish team, saying that 2019 was quite memorable, just when they were supposed to be a really crappy team and Helsinki was full of partygoers and there was no abuse at all, etc. The first world championship was in 1995 and never fort get against Sweden and the segel market was also full of Finns singing the Swedish victory song the glider in..
Yes, Sweden is the biggest rival during championship's. Always. They are effecionatly called golden goose's or Hannu Hanhi(lucky character from Donald Duck world) They usually win Finland by most discussing ways possible.
There are 5-6 big nations in hockey. Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden and Russia. Czechia is hanging.there. World Championships is a different story, because NHL playoffs are still ongoing, and you often see B teams with the big nations, but A teams with lesser. Sometimes you see Sweden or Russia having almost all their stars, but Finland not so much, because the best finnish players play in the best NHL teams. You see Germany or Switzerland upsetting top nations in World Championships and going far, but if it was best on best, they wouldn't have much of a chance. Sweden and Russia are the biggest rivals for Finland, but Russia is not there anymore for obvious reasons.
I was on the edge of my seat watching this game, and afterwards the whole of Helsinki went into mass hysteria. People climbed traffic poles and plunged into the Havis Amanda fountain, or drove around honking their horns and waving flags. What a time to be alive it was.
I watched the final in a downstairs tv-room of the barracks at military. I swear when the game ended the whole brigade roared. I don't think any major shenanigans happened, everyone was vibing at their respective sleeping spaces fairly peacefully.
Sweden is the worst enemy in hockey. Finland was the underdog for a long time, without a single world championship. Every year we did well, but Sweden always won the championship. Until in 1995 we were in the final against Sweden. Sweden was so sure of their victory that even before the game they prepared golden helmets and a Swedish victory song for their team. And Finland won 4-1. 😅 Finland's first world championship. The whole of Finland messed up and we stole those helmets and the victory song from them. 😅 We remember this fondly even today.
For sure the Sweden is the biggest rival for us and a great competitor. In my youth we also were the "little brother" but tides are changing! Russia is also a rival but different kind, that has a lot to do with politics and our history with them. That's not so good hearted rivalry as it's with the Swedes. Although Russia has amazing players and for me, my favorite players of all time Kovalchuk and Ovechkin are Russians.
To the question about who is the biggest rival in hockey for us, they are both Sweden and Russia. Difference between the two is, losing to Sweden is bitter, and winning Russia is sweet. I don't know if it translates well, but there is a difference. Until we joined Nato, Sweden was always the "big brother" leading the way. Now we are the big brother. Russia has always been the bigger threat so beating Russia is always more sweet. So winning your brother is ok, losing is bad. Winning your bully feels better, losing is just a regular Tuesday.
Finland used to be everybody else's second favourite but since Finland has become very good and successful at the sport I think nowadays Latvia is the plucky little underdog which everybody else supports. It used to be Finland but becoming good brings you enemies.
No, one cant trip the other player over with his stick, you have to play the puck. It is equivalent of footballer kicking the other on their legs and not the ball :)
No matter what kind of sport or Eurovision, its alway Sweden. ❤ It's funny because we kind of think Sweden as our big brother thatvwe look up to. But when competing we dont care if we lose if we atleast win Sweden.😂
Definietly biggest rival from nordic countries is Sweden, we friends until hockey season starts :D it's always good times as long as Sweden loses to us atleast once during the championship.
I'm pretty sure "Never Forget" regarding Finnish hockey was when we blew our 5-1 lead against Sweden in the finals back in 2003 and lost 5-6... Just seeing your video title hurt a bit, lol
I asked 6 people what "Never Forget" means to them and they all said '95.... Which is when we won our first championship, I just assumed that people won't forget the championships anyway.... Which is why I think 2003 is something we should never forget.
@@juhkust oh you're right it was the quarters... My bad (I guess I just shot myself into the foot about not forgetting...(In my defense I was 12 at the time))
Mörkö is Mörkö because he is 204cm tall or so. Pretty tall for icehockey player even there are biggers. U get too clumsy when u get height too much in sport of Ice-hockey.
Mörkö is like bogeyman (translated bc he is about 2 meters, dynno more of thge history of the name) but in this situation it's like mumin troll. He was criticized though out tournament and he really played like shit but unlike heroes arise sometimes.
Finland's biggest Swedish printed newspaper had also an article that claimed this being the worst National Team ever. After the tournament the journalist who wrote that actually ate his words: ua-cam.com/video/rofsZLkpam8/v-deo.htmlsi=0veeozhiOx0UKBH-
These "World Championships" are not like any other sports. Best players are never available since the by far best league has playoffs ongoing at the same time, and overall top players don't care about these annual games. Top teams play with their B- or C-level teams, maybe one or two top notch players might show up. Like Football World Cup has German team built from 2. Bundesliga, England team from Championship teams and so on.
this match was designed for Russian millionaire players. the entire finnish team does not earn as much as Ovetski. all you can say about this is , Finland, Sisu and sauna. Canada, Sweden and Russia are falling with these doctrines. I noticed well when you came to the game. In Finland, this is a bigger than life thing.😂
Finns live through hockey. when Finland plays, 3.5 million people watch. We always cry and celebrate with the national team. When Finland plays, the flags are raised in the stands. Finland loves hockey🎉
Yes and No. It was the first yes. But Suomi had been second wery many times. So it felt like finland could never win. But it was still not unexpected that finland would reach the finale. The 2019 was more unexpected becouse team Finland was not expected to even reach tha playoffs. More people expected finland to have to go through the qualifying to not be dropped to B championship
The commentator, Antero Mertaranta, is a legend in his own right. Probably every Finn knows his voice because he has been in the commentary box for each of Finland's championships. He just continues delivering!
This guy never reads your comments!
Bitter sweet rivalry, Sweden & Finland. Goes both ways, meaning it is as meaningful for both of us.
Factss
There is no rivalry. Fuck Putin & Kastehelmi. Russia is going down, hard
sweden always :D
And they are so good.
Other 'big opponents' would be Canada (they are practically born with a puck in their teeth!), Russia and the US. :)
And when either of them gets dropped from the championship they support one another, i mean iv always rooted for sweden when we get owned too early :D

The first world championship was in 1995 and never fort get against Sweden and the
segel market was also full of Finns singing the Swedish victory song the glider in..
Finland and Sweden, maby the biggest rivals in hockey!
That one who scored a lot of decisive goals (Marko Anttila) is actually my father's little cousin
3:53 Rip Johnny🕊️
Yes, Sweden is the biggest rival during championship's. Always. They are effecionatly called golden goose's or Hannu Hanhi(lucky character from Donald Duck world)
They usually win Finland by most discussing ways possible.
Nothing Is Over - Suomi MM 2011 is also really good
Sweden lit Finns. They are good but so are we.
They have some catching up to do. Have only won 4 world championship golds and 1 Olympic gold
Can you do this whit the 2022 olympic win?
8:45 that was a goal
Finland was under Sweden rule for over 550 yrs. BigBrother problem lives.😄
Sweden is by far the biggest rival, but canada is really annoying too, because they're so good.
🇫🇮🇫🇮😢🇫🇮🇫🇮
Yeah definetly legends😂
Yes rember swe and russia match
Sweden is the bigges rival of us
well sweden, russia, canada and usa are the only rivals for finland... and thaths big comparing to the population of every toher country than sweden
The biggest rival for finland is sweden
I'm pretty sure "Never Forget" regarding Finnish hockey was when we blew our 5-1 lead against Sweden in the finals back in 2003 and lost 5-6... Just seeing your video title hurt a bit, lol
I asked 6 people what "Never Forget" means to them and they all said '95.... Which is when we won our first championship, I just assumed that people won't forget the championships anyway.... Which is why I think 2003 is something we should never forget.
That wasn't the finals, was it? Quarters or semis, not sure which.
@@juhkust oh you're right it was the quarters... My bad (I guess I just shot myself into the foot about not forgetting...(In my defense I was 12 at the time))
Next: the aftermath
1995 never forget.
Mörkö is Mörkö because he is 204cm tall or so. Pretty tall for icehockey player even there are biggers. U get too clumsy when u get height too much in sport of Ice-hockey.
Did you watch 2011 world Championship? Finland win sweden 6-1 😊
Mörkö is like bogeyman (translated bc he is about 2 meters, dynno more of thge history of the name) but in this situation it's like mumin troll. He was criticized though out tournament and he really played like shit but unlike heroes arise sometimes.
Sweden its the big rival
Finland's biggest Swedish printed newspaper had also an article that claimed this being the worst National Team ever. After the tournament the journalist who wrote that actually ate his words:
ua-cam.com/video/rofsZLkpam8/v-deo.htmlsi=0veeozhiOx0UKBH-
Original nevöfoget was -95
These "World Championships" are not like any other sports.
Movie 95
Mörkö. ❤
Groke is Boogeyman
Sweden
Finns live through hockey. when Finland plays, 3.5 million people watch. We always cry and celebrate with the national team. When Finland plays, the flags are raised in the stands. Finland loves hockey🎉
Hockey means nothing.

Wtf "never forget 2019"? It's the '95 one that mattered. Though people who know what that was aren't the ones keeping noise on the internet.
