  • EASY. CHEAP. TASTES AMAZING. How to easily dehydrate meals for backpacking, camping and hiking - so you don’t have to spend $10 to $20 for pre-made meals that are not portioned just how you like it. Dehydrated food lets you bring real food into the backcountry without refrigeration, it’s lightweight and its affordable.
    MY DEHYDRATOR, CA Link a.co/d/1DlAwvt
    U.S. Link: a.co/d/788f8kV
My dog and I are based in British Columbia, Canada and spend the weekends solo adventuring, exploring mountains, camping and paddling.
    BACKCOUNTRY PAD THAI
    Serves 2
Dehydrate veg + tofu at 135F for 8-10 hours
Cooking on trail: boil for a minute, let sit for 10 min, add peanuts at the end
    4 oz Flat Rice Noodles
    1/2 Red Bell Pepper Dehydrated
    1/2 Cup Shredded Carrots Dehydrated
    1/2 Tsp dried garlic
    1/4 Tsp Ginger Powder
    2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
    Soy Sauce (2 To-Go Packets)
    2 Tbsp Peanut Butter Powder
1/4 Cup Chopped Roasted Unsalted Peanuts
1/2 cup firm or extra firm tofu dehydrated
    Tofu directions:
Freeze and thaw, season and cook, then dehydrate 135°F (57°C) for 4-8 hours
Freezing it opens up air spaces in the tofu through the expansion of frozen liquid inside
Dehydrating tofu, without freezing it first, results in tofu that resists rehydration. It will be rubbery and hard.
Once ready, you can snap it in half, rather than bend it like jerky.
    Cut into cubes
    OPTIONAL
    1 Tbsp Dried Cilantro
1/2 Tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
    1/2 cup Dehydrated chicken
    1/2 Cup Freeze-Dried Scrambled Eggs
    BACKCOUNTRY RICE/VEG/TOFU CURRY
    Serves 1
Dehydrate veg + tofu at 135F for 8-10 hours
Cooking on trail: add boiling water to bag, let sit for 10 min
    ½ cup dehydrated Rice
¼ cup Tofu dehydrated (cubed or noodle shaped)
    ¼ cup Green Onions Dehydrated
    ¼ cup Mushrooms Dehydrated
Soak in soy sauce before hydrating them
    ¼ cup Vegetables Dehydrated
    Corn, carrots, beans
    1 tsp seasoning
Nutritional yeast, Garlic powder, Onion powder, Italian seasoning, Turmeric, salt, pepper

Hesitant to say anything negative...I appreciate your channel and content...just raising the concern of putting boiling water in a plastic bag as this can leach chemicals into your food. In a pinch, sure, but may not be good to do regularly.

That’s valid. You’re speaking from a place of concern, not criticism. For what it’s worth you said this very nicely.

i have a tip for you for cutting the paper for the tray. fold it in half, then in half again, the point where it crosses itself is the center of the paper. fold it again, but this time into a triangle, keeping the center point as the corner of the triangle. Place the center point in the center of the tray and cut the edge of the triangle into a curve that is at the edge of your dehydrator tray. trim the center point into a small curve to leave the opening for the center. unfold and you should have close to a circle. the more you practice, the better you will get.
I am enjoying your videos. You are inspiring me to spend more time on myself on the weekends when I can.

Yes was going to advise the same. ua-cam.com/video/rY6duKdOZok/v-deo.html (dont know if i can link this, otherwise google "Jamie Oliver cutting bakingpaper" lol & find a 1 min YT-vid of a french guy cutting a 'cartouche'.)
I used to have a round dehydrater with a whole in the middle and this worked very well for me.

    - Steaming is a great way to prepare veggies for dehydration. Its quick and avoids the use of oil for pan frying.
    - You can use Minute Rice instead of cooking and drying your own.
    - Some health food stores carry dehydrated Black Beans, ready to add to your camping food. For example, camping burritos.

I know its crazy! Just a cheepo is great. It just needs to blow hot air and you are good ;) The more expensive ones mostly are easier to work with, so worth the pay if you are using them every week or so. They also dry more even, while with a cheaper one you might have to rotate the trays once. Sometimes they have more settings in temp and timer etc. But you dont need all that :) Ive had a cheepo for many years until it broke down and it worked very well for me

So entertaining and informative, highly relatable with the can't locate the cutlery. Fast food wooden utensils are easy to store in the glove box or backpack, will be there till needed weigh nothing and don't rattle. Seems reinstated obviousness, but despite having dehydrated food, the premix and tofu advice, was stuff I learned from your latest vlog! Always an amusing entertaining experience, thanks Madison the amazing!

I've been dehydrating camping meals for a while. I didn't have good luck with tofu, it was chewy and tough. I'll try freezing as you suggest. I "cook" the meals right in the freezer bag which I put inside a cozy made from foil bubble insulation. Boil water pour it in and let it "cook" for 10-15 min. Eat it right out of the bag. No clean up or washing. Zip the bag closed and take it home to be washed and resused.

    Next up.. BORSH! :)
On my last backpacking trip up in the Enchantments my tastiest dinner ended up being borsh. Due to time constraints I didn't do my usual homemade dehydrated meal thing so I snagged some vegan dinners from MEC, and the tastiest was the borsh.
Having had borsh in Ukraine I've become pretty picky about borsh ;)
The one I had was from Nomad Nutrition... my favorite (so far) commercial backpacking food, but I'd still prefer to make my own.

I've always wondered why more people don't do this. It seems they stop after dehydrating chili or spaghetti. Can do so much with shelf stable ingredients and a cheap dehydrator. And not a whole lot of recipes around.
