There was an element of luck involved in this still awesome win. Peter Brock had the greatest win ever when he won by 6 laps, And set a new track record on the very last lap.
There's no disputing a performance like that. Blow out on lap 1 of an iconic all-day race. Perkins, Ingall and team had to start over, which they did. Then they proceeded to slowly and methodically reel them all in. By driving flat out. All day. In my uneducated opinion, as I'm not familiar with every Bathurst 1000, It's the best performance ever at Mt Panorama. From the performance of Perkins and Ingall behind the wheel, to the awesome pit stops performed by the crew, to the engineering behind a car which held out to criminal abuse over 1000km. They drove that engine to 7500rpm all day, and it survived.
A testament to a great man who has changed the face of V8 supercars for the better. I remember watching also when I was 16 and It changed my carrer direction. The best thing was he built his own cars, with his own engines and drove hard enough to beat the best!
As he said in this video, he even built the brake calipers, and brake pads (with help from a Japanese brake producer for the pads). Larry is unarguably the best driver/team owner to ever race. He built his own car completely from scratch, with every part produced in his backyard shed. He built 49 chassis, for himself, and produced for many privateer teams. He raced in Formula One for 5 different teams, most notably Brabham. Not to mention he won Bathurst 6 times, and Sandown 3 times, and his team has one of the best finishing records in World motorsport. That's why we all love Larry
Thanks for posting this. I remember watching the race live that day and nearly screaming myself horse cheering Larry on.Awesome drive well deserved victory.
I was hoping for a Glenn Seton and Parsons win that day, but as we all know, motor sport can be a cruel game...but on the same hand, nobody can overlook the tenacity, driving, and engineering skills of Larry, and his operation at Perkins Engineering...years later he still remains the best operator this game of racing has ever seen..bar none.
I'm a 44 year old Australian 🦘🇦🇺❤️ Was raised with a blue oval stamped on my head however, out of all the Bathurst efforts.... This still sits #1 for me on effort on the day. 🇦🇺❤️🦘
It must have been a huge day man. I'd never heard of Larry until he was PB's Co-driver. Your post made me google him, and he was 45 when he smashed that Bathurst race from start to finish. I'm no historian, but I've watched Bathurst races from the late 70's until recently. It's the best drive I've ever heard of on the mountain.
I have always supported Fords, but i have MUCH RESPECT for Larry Perkins both as an engineer and a driver LP builds GOOD race cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last to 1st amazing, 93 he won, check out ''Larry Perkins sideways, 94'' it is awesome!!
@@darrylkelly7958 No, he didn't. He was the only one to run a Holden V8 in 95. The Holden was considered inferior at that time and when he applied for the homologation the scrutineers didn't see a problem with it. It was discussed in the Bathurst: Celebrating 75 Years of Racing at Mount Panorama book
Larry Perkins is a legend, a genius engineer. I remember he built a Holden V8 for the race rather than use the Chevy supplied engines the rest of the Holdens used and he blitzed the qualifying, but I can't remember what eventually happened. I think he was no longer allowed to use it, hahaha. What a guy!
I bet Larry would have been an easy bloke to “snatch it” if you worked for him .... if he didn’t give you the “Tijuana” first. Great engineer but! Have a look at the map of Victoria in your Melways, go real left, towards South Australia .... there is nothing out there but dust ... on the Murrayville Highway, the Melways says “Cowangie - home of Larry Perkins”. In not even a town of two crows there’s a big sign with VR or VS in Castrol warpaint, “Cowangie - Home of Larry Perkins - Bathurst Winner”.
sometimes you need things to go your way and a little bit of luck....perkins and ingall drove fantastic...seton came close but i still think the shell team wouldve won it if they hadnt of been taken out
dabooda49 correct the race is 161 laps. but larry perkins and russell ingall were a lap down, effectively making the race for them 162 laps. they had to pass everyone to get back on the lead lap. it does throw people off hearing that
@@ryanbutterworth2675 if they were a lap down it was because they had done one LESS lap than everyone else at that time. Lapping them only brought them back on to the same lap. So 161 laps for LP & RI. They did not win by 1 lap
No he used a 5L Holden engine that he homogulated a block with more metal in certain locations and improved the heads. Did it all in the Holden factory so it was technically legal. He also was using the slide air valve instead of butterfly inlet valves. His engine had more power than everyone else, that's why he had a higher speed on Conrad straight. Nothing to do with a 6L. In fact larry was one of the last using the Aussie 5L while the others were using 5L Chevy engines, before they changed the rules to make him use the Chevy engine. The reality of this win was due to larry making a break calliper that was wider enough to hold a pad that would last all of Bathurst, he got a company to make pads that were about 10mm thicker. Changing pads use to take about 3 minutes so Larry effectively got back his lap by not changing pads. The amount of times you made this comment in multiple places suggest you are a disgruntled Ford or seaton fan.
@@michaelgiglio1571 No he never did. You are making up nonsense. Here is an extract from a website, note that his engines were inspected. I use to watch V8 superstars and Larry never said this. The best example of this is Larry Perkins Bathurst winning 304 back in the '90s. Everyone whinged about how Larry's engine was heaps faster up the hill and he must have been cheating. When the powers that be pulled his engine down all they found were intake port fillers, designed to reduce the intake port volume in order to increase air speed and therefore torque. This is why his car was faster up the hill, but the same as everyone elses coming down.
The sweetest victory ever in the history of Bathurst. It'll never be repeated. Larrikin Larry Perkins is an absolute Legend. 💪💪💪

Didnt holden pay Tony cockrin to handycap the fords from the 90,s so softies in the holdens could win. LOOSERS,
Bullshit, he was suposed to use a 5ltr, not 6ltr chev

how good is this footage love it
LP, what a great bloke, great engineer and driver
Great race, a favourite. A little sorry for Seton, he was a damn good driver. But you're in a Ford, so tough.
You almost didn't sound like a bogan, and then you did

What An Incredible Race That Year
This was my first time at Bathurst. A great race as usual.
Good looking car , good looking lines (driving that is) and good looking blokes!
developed his own brake calipers? truly underrated
A great sporting moment
You know you are doing something right when they change the rules after you win, well done Lazza
Legendary legend.
Great clip of the last REAL Holden V8 race car to win at the Bathurst 1000....
The Greatest Win @ Bathurst Ever 😅 Awesome Larry Perkins 👏

It was a tribute to the last 308 too
A TRUE GENTLEMAN of the sport unlike some that are going round now
