  • What an exciting day at the farm - I have a huge new piece of equipment being dropped off. Yup, it's a bulldozer. Specifically, it is a 1956 Caterpillar D6 9U bulldozer with the Forestry Package and its 60-ton rear winch.
As I've been mentioning in some of my videos, I really need to clear some of this land. I've been exploring small-scale tools for certain areas of the land (the chainsaw, weed whacker, the riding mower, etc.) - but when you stand in the middle of the chaos that has grown up and overtaken the property, you realize really quickly that some heavy equipment is needed.
I consulted with some local tractor shops, and they all said the same thing. The combination of acres of 6-foot tall intertwined pricker bushes, downed trees, stumps, saplings, and so much more would be a recipe for disaster for a small tractor, a mid-sized tractor and even some large tractors... even with a front loader and a brush hog. Those would be fine for the maintenance of the property once it has been cleared, but almost all were in agreement that to deal with the diverse complications of the property, as it sits today, some larger earth-moving equipment would be necessary.
After a lot of research and exploration, a simple conclusion kept popping up - if you're not buying a brand-new machines (which I definitely don't have the funds for) the mid 1950's Cat bulldozers are a favorite of excavating professionals. They are straightforward to maintain and repair, all the parts are still available through Caterpillar, the engines are bulletproof (that is, the pony motor and the large diesel engine), and most everything on the machine is mechanical, with only the blade lift mechanism being hydraulic. That provides less room for problems, blown hoses, pump failures and more. SO, that is the type of machine I targeted and I began my hunt on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Fortunately I found one in really nice shape a few hours away from me. Aside from the complications of getting it here and learning a little how to use the machine, it was a very smooth and enjoyable purchasing process.
Once you start moving dirt, you can really see the results FAST! Stay tuned for more of an update when I have some time next weekend to make a serious dent in what needs to be cleared.
    Thanks for watching.
