Quick fix Rust Repair on my Truck (Rocker and Cab Corners)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- In this episode, I take my rocker rust out, and cover it with grease and undercoating, replacing it with a quick cover that will never rust. This solution is perfect for what I need it for, for nonstructural rust.

Fascinating how home ownership means upkeep, no matter what the shape it takes.
I would suggest taking some white silicone and sealing the couple cracks on each side sothat water can't get all inside where you just cut out the rust. Looks like a good idea for rocker repair though
Great thinking, the silicone will also keep water from seeping through the cracks
The water will be trapped in between the walls
This is another reason I like you. Whether it's new fishing, fixing the canopy , outdoor- tailgate- rock cooking, improving the truck, reaching out to others for help or a good time. Or just tackling and doing it yourself. Great attitude for living, bud! Keep on truckin'.
Looks great man! For the age of the truck, that’s honestly the best you can do. It’s not practical to pay $6000 for a 2011. Once your UA-cam channel really takes off you’ll be able to afford something newer and better! Keep on truckin man! Love your channel! 🤙🏼
ClawBoss here before Mac hearts it ;)

Not everyone wants to buy new my guy lol
Id day it’s taken off
Tell you what man. I never subbed till now. I have watched you off and on. But after the Brake job and this you got my respect. May not be how I would have done it. But you put the freaking effort in. Much respect. Not that my opinion matters
A few cans of fluid film and the spray extension hose will seriously help slowdown vehicle rot, get every part the hose will reach into and do it while it's still warm outside so the stuff soaks into all the sheet metal seams. 50 or 60 bucks will buy you a few extra years before its rotted to bad if you do it right.
Good job Mav nice seeing the younger generation learning how to do this kind of stuff.
Run some seem sealer around those seems to help keep the water down from getting in between the plastic covers
I'm from new mexico, things dont rust here, watching things about rust is mind blowing, we have vehicles daily driven from the 80s without rust, I feel bad for you guys over there
you're lucky, brand new, shiny brake rotors rust in 2 weeks lol
I do rust repair (via the best method) however that will give a little more time, its still going to help entrap moisture against the already compromised inner rocker. This might hurt you in the long run bc you wont see rust again until its way too late.
True, but don't you think between the rust (as best he could) removal, and inhibitor (though I would have gone with a converter, paint, then inhibitor), and keeping it clean, he's not going to get a few years off of it? It's clearly not a truck he's going to have for 10 years.
i’m doing it with my truck and cutting it out and welding new inners and outers
Mom and Dad will appreciate that overspray :)
Right
😂😂😂
Covers face...doesn’t move car.
Better get out the clay bar
I work in the metal industry and they have something called “ fizz “ it’s a rust remover and primer. It will stop it from rusting
Is there another name for it or just fizz?
Naval Jelly is what i've seen it called. I usually just slather it with Marine grease if it can't be painted heavily with the fizz stuff.
You should go and fish eagle lake mn off the landing it’s juiced!! Try it and pop a frog across the Lilly pads!!! Bass for days!!!
Hey this is a car repair video and not a fishing video. Kindly limit your comments and questions to autobody repair. Thanks in advance
It actually is from water that is leaking in from the high mount brake light. If you look on your headliner you will see water spots around where the high mount brake light is. Pull it out and reseal it with some silicone. It is a common problem from 2004 up to 2014. I resealed it on both my trucks and have never had a problem since. My neighbour has the exact same truck as me and is is rusting out and mine is like new still.
give you a lot of credit Mav, I am much older but I couldn't have had the patience to do all that, I would have just had a shop do it. Salute for doing it yourself. It does look excellent for a one man job.
Thanks Man, thats appreciated very much. Cheers, Steve@@lifequest7453
I'm surprised how nice those turned out. Looks good. This is the only reason I opted for my first ever new truck 5 years ago when I went looking. Every truck I saw was rusted so I bought a 2015 f150 that has an aluminum body.
You know what kid, that was very well done. I like that you just "go for it". Good for you!
I bought my f150 from grand forks nd was an 03 so it was like 15 years old when I got it but had little to no rust due to I guess since noDak doesn't salt their roadways in winter like we do in mighty Minnesota and after only a couple Minnesota winters it got rusty as all heck lol but yea nice mechanical vid mav your the real deal broski
this channel is better than anything Peric has ever done.
I have a black ‘11 F-150 FX4 and have the same issue, not quite as bad. Appreciated seeing your experience. I’m far from a professional...so seeing experts on UA-cam was intimidating.
I’ll be doing the same thing! Thanks for the info!!
Just bought a 2005 f-150. It has some rust. Very raw and awesome video. Thank you for sharing.
You read my mind I’m in the exact same situation with my 2014 F-150 my corners are starting to rust they don’t have holes yet but I live in Wisconsin so it’s best I get it fixed now before it gets worse.
Great work , it'll last at least five yrs. Depends how strong the material is and what it costs. I'd say it looks very professional and don't let anyone tell you different.
5 years? maybe if it was fiberglass, but its plastic with zero seam sealer. just saying if he lives or visits wear its hot itll get brittle over time and itll start to rust when water gets trapped in the seams, and not to mention if he lives were they salt roads hes got a year or 2 tops and im leaning towards the year mark. Its a band-aid for a broken arm its just not gonna do much
Awesome video thanks! Very helpful got a 13 with same issue I was stressing until I watched this video!
That looks amazing. If you ever have problems with the adhesive tape, adding heat to the new tape will help it last longer
Maverick now that we're in the data winner with a foot of snow on the ground I'm probably about 400 miles south of you I got an F-150 couple years older than yours. I had no idea they had those plastic covers I was going to do all mine and steal in the spring got the exact same problem. so thank you
I’ve got a 97 F150 flairside with a hole I’ve dug rust out with my fingertips the size of a football. It’s a lariat w/ silver paint on the bottom of the cab and part of the bed where t it meets the cab. I was gonna do the ole foam bondo combo till I saw this. Don’t know if I can get what I’ll need from the same place but I may give it a go. I’ve got 1 year to do both sides as my nephew will be 16 then and I’m giving it to him for his birthday. The thing had 38 miles on it when I bought it new in 97. It had just come off the line a month before and those miles were from the line to the lot 7 or 8 times and putting it on and off the carrier then getting it to the dealer. Been the best truck I’ve ever had and now I want Jack to have something he can be happy to drive and be proud of like I was. Yep I like to rant a little bit now and then. Great vid. Now I’m motivated to get on with it. Like I said…I’ve got a year to do what you did in a day. The way I procrastinate I’ll be damn lucky to make it by his birthday. Lol
Damn bro, I would be so nervous to do that to my Honda Pilot if I had that problem. You are the MAN!!
Nice job on the restoration. I'm glad you used the rust inhibitor.
For a used truck to keep for a couple of years, this looks like a pretty decent cover up. I mean, cleaning out rust versus cutting it out is almost impossible. I would have put in a rust convertor paint in those voids, but otherwise, this is a decent little job considering the alternative.
I was thinking the same, it's possible the product he has is similar, different name.
thanks for a great video. I have a 2012 f150 so i am probably unaware of the rust problem but I will take a look tomorrow especially because I do some 4x4 beach driving and the roads here get plenty of salt in the winter. If I need to repair it you have shown the way. very good instructional video. thanks.
Looks great!! Unfortunate that was a common problem with the F150 during those years.
You get 10 out of 10 from me. Very excellent video. I have a 97 F150 with this issue. I was gonna go old school and cut out the piece from a 01 F150 but this looks like the way to go. Thanks for the video.
I replaced my rockers and cab corners in my 2005 F-150 Crew cab and man it wasn't fun. You can buy them fairly cheaply online, remove the old cab corners/rockers, then slap the new ones on with some metal adhesive and paint em' up. I probably put over 24 hours of work into it but It honestly looks so good you'd never notice they were replaced.
the fact that he is painting inside a garage w another car in it makes me anxious.
Glad I'm not the only one that thought that
I was thinking the same shit I’m like oh no dude stop 🛑
😂😂💯💯💯💯
His mom will love that on her car
Great job, Mav. I always appreciate your willingness to dive in and do something you have never done before. As you were running that grinder it reminded me of another channel I watch where the same thing happened to the lense! I guess that is a mistake you will only make once. Love the content. Thanks bro!
I've got a white 2013 with the 6.2L and FX4 - mines is a few years behind yours was in rust, in those areas. I need to take care of it. Good video.
I was surprised at how nice that came out. It took balls to start carving into the body to prep it for the panels. On an almost 10 year old truck it's a definite win. The test is, I've been watching your newest videos and never spotted the repair. Only after I've been binge watching your older stuff did I see this.
Love your channel and everything about it, you've shown me similar youtubers and have given a lot of important information. I'm an LA city boy and for the first time ever I'm considering selling my camaro to buy a truck with a camper and just travel / camp. Until then and even when that happens I'll be watching your vids!
Didn't even know plastic ones existed. Definitely need to grab some. They look great!
Great job Mav, its a temp fix, you should look in to Por15. Hopefully you fixed sunroof drainage issue fixed.
Makes me appreciate my southern truck more
New sub here, got to the point where I'm fully invested in this channel and binge watching now lmao. Keep it up Mav!
Nice job. Your right the rust isn't gone, but from 10ft you don't look like one of those people. It was a beautiful shot with the sparks flying at the lens. Hopefully the marks on the lens will buff out. Back in the pre-internet... Hell this was the 70s, it was pre everything. The photographer that taught me camera basics said, "If you buy a lens get a UV filter for it." The filter will protect the front glass from dirt, scratches and it does remove a little of the blue haze in landscape shots. And they are under $10.
I have same issue with my 07 f150..same corners..color and all think im gonna give this a shot..thanks
“Vehcor” does a lot of body repair on his channel and sprays a body wax into cavities to help prevent rust.. you might want to look into it as a preventative against future rust
Now eventually a fellow UA-camr that does welding/body repair will get a hold of you and you can do a co-op video and cut that rocker and cab corner out and weld it in properly. But for the time being that's a nice temp repair, though I would recommend some seam sealer to keep the crud out.
I think I’ll be using panel adhesive rather than the tape and rivets, but this looks like a good way to go. Thank you for this video.
Nice job! My 2004 Chevy truck has the same rust spots! I will try to do this to it this summer! Thanks for the great video!👍😎
Haters are gonna hate most people couldn’t even do this let alone change there own oil or do breaks or tune up I think he did an awesome job great job man always enjoy your videos
It still looks really fresh on the sides and front
Thats the thing that sucks about living in places where it rains and snows a lot it will rust out any vehicle new or used that’s why I love living in California never had that problem
Very well-done sir.
A great fix actually.
I admire your willingness to hack on your truck, Mav
For real. That would be my biggest fear.
Good stuff mav, i wanna see the back cab seat removal and new setup too!!
I really appreciate all your video's Mav however this one is extremely helpful to me, I drive a 2008 ford expedition and my rocker panels are rusted I didn't know what to do because I wasn't gonna pay to have it repaired, but this will work perfectly I think I'll post my repair to my UA-cam channel...... thanks again brother
Bro u are like my favorite UA-camr love the catch and cooks bro keep up the amazing vids !
Awesome job, I was very impressed and it sure did come out nice, I wish I would have known that there were part's out there like that for my truck
Love watching you think buddy
Keep on trucking
Like a band-aid on a gunshot wound.
Say what you want but doc mcstuffins band aids always work on sucking chest wounds.
Lip stick on a pig.
It don’t do me no good at all.
Meh, it ain't like that clapped out F150 is going on Mecum or Barret Jackson. Good enough for a 10 year old bazillion mile truck.
I really think you should get a camper topper for the back of your truck. Just a smaller one but would make a world of a difference
Aah yes, had to make it pass inspection. Nice work thank you for helping
Great job young man. You should be pretty proud of yourself.
That company was started by a friend of mine. They look good Mav.
Could be from salt on the roads when it snows in the winter
Nice job! Man, I’ve gotten so spoiled, from upper Michigan originally but now live in Arizona. Where I’m at up in the mountains we get some winter but thankfully they don’t salt the roads here. Makes for a lot of 4x4 use in winter time by my 2000 ‘burb is still completely rust free
Not to worry, with your awesome videos, one lucky manufacturer will sponsor you! Great work
Omg can’t believe your painting while that car is still in the garage. Hopefully you didn’t get overspray on it.
I have 2010 F150. Same issue. This looks good !
Hey man love your channel. Just starting the video but I have the same truck (mines 2011) and wanted to point on a other area of concern they get. The rear doors can collect water. It gets in from the window and will fill up the bottom of the door there is a little rubber piece that is supposed to allow it to drain but they usually plug up. If it's rained recently, give your back doors a shake while open and if there is water you will hear it. I removed the little rubber deal from the bottom of the door so it rains easier. Also, if it has factory Sirius radio, it can leak around the antenna and it can discolor the roof liner (inside the cab) and drop inside. I got some sealant and sealed mine up. I noticed I am getting rust starting vehind my front wheels on the rockers, and I think my cab corners are just starting. Anyways best of luck with the repairs, thanks for this video, I am going to look into doing mine soon.
Mav love the 360 of your life, making of the repair of your truck a good video. Like the research into it and Respect your work in accomplishing the goal. Thanks for posting.
You have a hell of a lot more patience then I do for jobs like that!
It amazes me to see vehicles this age rust. In Arkansas a truck can be 40 years old with no rust at all
Nice job make sure you spray your truck frame with fluid film this fall before winter it helps keep the salt from eating your truck
alot of the Fords leak around the high mount brake light high on the back of the cab. Pop it off and reseal.
Preach young sir
get some rock sliders that bolt onto your frame man. super solid and dont have to worry about them connecting to the rocker panels. plus it provides you with another jack point as the sliders are an all steel construction.
This is going to be a good video
what year is that car? in my country you have to weld that kind of damage, that could be bad if the rust spreads like it usually does over time. And its safer to have metal instead of plastic incase of hit by another car
Thought you were gonna just slap those plastic covers on but it looks like you did your due diligence in rust prevention. Nice work Mav👍
I have the same truck as you and I had the same issue. I managed to find a friend who welds and he put in 22 gauge sheet metal an used bondo To cover and and paint it. Managed to get it all done for 350CAD including materials.
Good job Mav. that was worth watching. did not know they had them. Keep up the great vids. they always are.
I had a similar problem with my 04 Avalanche. I went with the spray foam solution and sanded it to match the contour, then I took some painters tape and did a line around my truck about four inches above rocker pannels, then I rolled bedliner on it. I did the same to the front of the hood and grille, to tie it all in together. I got tons of comments on how good the truck looked so I guess it passed inspection. Keep the lines straight the entire length of the truck, and it looks like it belongs there. I also did the underside of the frame once I got the rust off.
That is a temporary "fix". In the long run the foam will hold in moisture and make it worse than if you left it alone
@@jaretaustin14 Yeah, No longer my problem, sold it for more than I paid for it.
Dude according to my Sherlock Holmes power of Deduction, you and Hannah obviously broke up. I watched your videos individually so was pleasantly surprised you two are a couple. Really cute ones too. Oh well. Anyway, you have more interesting vids lately. I think you're the first one I watched sleep camping on a boat. U have unique ideas. Keep it up.
love the content man I plan to build out a sprinter van into a hidden rv for city environments
eye protection a MUST specially working with wire wheel.
Awesome fix.......only thing I would of changed I would of covered up the steel....with something the silicone idea is dope too
Nice man think I'ma do this to Mine this summer seems a bit of work but not dropping 3k-5k for a body shop when my 2010 has 220k miles
Keep up the good work mav
Lookss great Mav ! When I get a new truck I order the factory molded plastic running boards...no rust eve3r.
Wow that’s a shame the manufacturers don’t do a better job preventing this. I’ve seen Newer Fords, Chevys and Doges all rust out in a few years. Meanwhile cars seem to last much longer without rusting. My 06 Tundra was still clean when I sold it last summer but I kept it out of the salt as much as possible in WI and washed it frequently in winter.
Others mentioned you may want to caulk the upper edges to keep water from getting in but the adhesive should do that. Just make sure water can still drain out.
Thanks for showing me a product I have never seen before.
Please give us an update on how everything is holding up after a year.
MN winters are brutal!
Nice work MAV good video catch you next time till then stay safe God bless and keep posting an awesome videos
Mav I'm not sure if yall have the problem . If they salt yalls roads in the west cause of the ice on the roads , the salt causes the rust , I have family up north that have the same problems . And living on the salt water coast of South Carolina we have the same . Thanks for sharing how to fix it . Your fan from SC
I love those year F150's. But I live up in Canada so we have rust issues too. I ended up waiting and saving up some more money and got a 2018 aluminum body F150. I had a 2003 F150 and the cab corners and rockers rotted just like yours. So I'm really hoping the aluminum bodies hold up well.
Nice aesthetic fix. Drive it til the wheels fall off 🤙
ChrisFix would be proud.
Nice Raptor rims....nice they fit f150 good.
As a native Californian I had no idea rust could build up that fast
Oh yeah. It’s unreal, especially in areas that get snow and use road salt. They really need to start using alternatives, salt isn’t just hard on vehicles it’s bad for soil and vegetation too
First video i have seen. Looking to fix some rust on my GMC. . Good job dude!
I’d probably put a clear sealer above the plastic cab corner so water doesn’t deep into it.
Now that's an interesting hack job
awesome! i have a close friend with the same problem. thanks for this!
