I bought the GH5 when it came out and I've been using it as my main camera ever since. I never bought the Log upgrade and instead have been using HLG since they added it with a firmware update. A year ago I built a camera rig around it and with fast glass the lowlight performance isn't an issue. Still a great camera.
The Lumix S5 is basically the full frame version- its around £200 to £300 more but has INCREDIBLE low light performance, and a few more tricks up its sleeve
Yup I absolutely love my S5!! And if needed it can also record 5,9k BRAW with a Black Magic Video Assist :))
The S5 has fantastic image quality, better than the S5II. But IBIS, rolling shutter and even AF are eally not as good as the GH5.
@@aiseurnae5976 I have an S5 and a GH5 and the S5 definitely has better autofocus.
The GH5 is probably the most futureproof video-centric camera ever made.
Boy, with so much content being shot on large sensors these days, I actually felt a bit of nostalgia seeing footage come from a MFT camera. It's mind blowing that the gh5 is 7 years old now--I remember when it was released and everyone was hyped about the upgrade from the gh4!

FYI, when activating VLOG-L on something like a GH5 or G9 that's all you are really doing: *activating it*. It's already on the camera, there is no "installation" involved. The log profile was on it when it left the factory. Not sure why Lumix did this, and required the extra payment on top of the $1000+ you paid for the camera, boggles the mind tbh. Not to say it isn't very useful ofc, but even little Sony point-and-shoot RX cameras have the full suite of s-log profiles installed from the outset, not requiring you pay anything extra.
There was a hack on the GH4 I did when I bought it that would let you activate the VLOG-L without entering the code. Saved a 120€ doing it
Also the VLOG-L is just a 9bit codec since it doesn't use all the code values. Just double what the 8bit uses. I'd just stick to CineD or HLG
@@shueibdahir Is that the hack when you use the smartphone app that has vlog-l built in and you just save it to a custom profile and can use it afterwards even when not using the smartphone app?
@@shueibdahir I have the v-log-l on my G9, and I'd definitely recommend it over HLG and CineD. The latter are both great, but vlog-l offers superior latitude to work with.

If you buy the Emotive Color GHAlex LUT pack you can match this camera's image to an ARRI ALEXA 1:1 and then do the grade on top of it. You'll be mindblown, it beats almost every single hybrid or a small cinema camera i've used to this day.
I used it on a GH4 with the Atomos Assasin and my jaw dropped after seeing the image
PS. This camera actually records 9.7 stops because of the limitations of VLOG-L. It's actually a using double the code values of 8bit but still a lot less than 10bits.
The full VLOG beats it by a metric f- ton

Oh that's good to know! As for LUTs I use cinematch to switch v-log L into Arri log-c and use arris conversion as my starting point or I use some V-log specific Luts but tweak them for V-log L
Still rocking my GH5! GHAlex and 55Media's LUTs are my go-tos for shooting VLog. Still amazed by the image quality and using the camera just feels so natural thanks to how easy the menu system is to use and the custom buttons.

Got mine new a couple years ago for double the price 😭 It's been such a great camera/platform. The image quality is still amazing and I push the low light capabilities with prime lenses such as the Lumix 25mm 1.7 and the Sigma 16mm 1.4

Some great footage of The Gorge and the Falls. I will be back up there to The Farm in a few weeks to spend time with friends and share creative and classic cooking, and take photographs while hiking its many scenic trails. There are multiple opportunities for great photographic scenes on The Farm and in the Gorge.
I love that people try to upgrade as soon as they can. That leaves more cheap used gear in the market for the people that love their money too much.
You content is by fare one of the reason I can get excited about making content with out feeling like I can’t afford stuff as a videographer or photographer thanks
Before open gate was a 'talking point'. GH4 and GH5 had it!
My favorite wedding video of all time (Mango Street's filmed by White in Revery) was shot on a GH5 and it's an example of what I NEED was here all long. Anything more than what the GH5 offered is just a 'want' for me and I'm at peace with that.

I still shoot on my GH5 w/ the Sigma 16mm 1.4. I do want to upgrade soon though! Probably gonna get the FX30 or XH2s.
I understand that, I used the 16mm and 56mm from sigma for this video and some shots on the new TT artisan 10mm f2
I bought the GH5 right when it came out, and I can't find a reason to upgrade. Going to full frame means much bigger zoom lenses...and a lot of cropping.for different frame rates which is super annoying. The stabilization also hasn't caught up. Was looking at a GX85 or G85 as a B-cam... I wish there was a smaller GH5 that was a good B-cam
I still use a gh5 and gh5s for weddings with no problem at all and the biggest reason is because of the lens size (35-100 vs 70-200). My GH5s lives either on my gimbal or monopod so the lack of IBIS has never been an issue. Also if you ask anyone to compare low light, they will always like the image from a properly lit space vs a camera with clean crazy high ISO. These are definitely great choices for kits so you can use your extra $$$ on some lights and/or audio gear.
That's always been why i love mft, the size of the bodies is great but the lens size is what really sells it for me

I just got a GH5 a few days ago and I am stunned by how much the camera can do in it´s price range. I managed to get a deal of a lifetime and got a GH5 with 12-35mm O.I.S lens and a few batteries for 550 bucks and the only downside I found to the camera is the autofocus and lowlight performance, but I am searching for external light solutions and I focus manually most of the time anyways... I am really happy with how much love this camera is getting even after so many years, really solidifies my choice.

Still have and use my GH5 I bought new. Instead of upgrading, I bought some sirui Anamorphic lenses and a Ninja V.
Not sure if you see this, but i really need some advice. I wanna make film and photography a career and I’ve had a Panasonic g85 for about 4 years as my first camera but it’s just not cutting it anymore. I wanna primarily do video projects, more like short films, but I do like doing photo shoots and just photography in general. I’m just having a hard time figuring out what camera to get as I’m on a tighter budget so I can’t really buy two cameras like what others have recommended. For example they use the g9ii as a B cam and something like a s5iix as their main. I only use micro 4/3 and have 4 lenses already so it just makes sense for me to still use micro 4/3 for now. Also a big thing for me is I want to be able to shoot in low-light and nighttime situations. From concerts, to night photography, low light scenes for short films. My g85 definitely can’t do that. What camera would you recommend for micro4/3? Would a g9ii be better or the gh6? Is there another camera you’d recommend for a full frame as well? I wouldn’t mind going full frame but it would last take me more time to acquire newer lenses since they appear to be more expensive. At that point I’d probably just want to sell all my micro 4/3 gear for full frame stuff. I just wanna make a purchase that is worth my money and will suit me the best.

I still use it, along with the GH6, S5, S5II etc.
The GH5 is still great and sometimes better than even the S5, S5II, GH6 and G9II.
It has better rolling shutter than both the S5 and S5II, it has better IBIS and AF than the S5, better fine details in 4K than the S5II/GH6/G9II, better AF in open gate than the GH6 (more pulsing and much slower), AFC is also much more accurate than the GH6 in 4k,c4k,5,7k with frame rate below 48fps (Panasonic never corrected this bug on the GH6).

Only OGs shot on the T2i 😂 The GH5 looks like the footage would hold up way better though.
Good video.... I agree what you are saying about the older cameras. If they do what you want, then great.... there is no reason to switch.
IMO the 'new improved' batch of cameras are not worth the extra $$. If they put in nightvision and infrared... then I would consider paying what they are asking.

I got as my first serious camera a used gh5 at the end of 2022 and I am still squeezing juice out of it! Though at the end of last year I got a bmpcc 4k which I am loving as well, I will always use the gh5 for many things: I travel a lot, I record adventures and I want to start underwater freediving recording, for these things the gh5 is just too good

I bought one of these recently! I was using the BMPCC OG and I had a Lumix G7, both of which worked fine on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro in Davinci Resolve, but the GH5 is really choppy on there, which I was genuinely surprised about - if RAW files and pro res from the bmpcc and the mp4 files from the G7 worked I assumed the GH5 footage would have played fine, but I tried filming in every codec on there and all footage was choppy, even the 1080p mp4. So it looks like I need to now update my Mac, it’s my own fault, the camera is probably too new for it I’m guessing?

I thought this was gonna be one of those videos, though this was refreshing and something great to see. I am so not bothered about cameras any more because for the last 7 years or so the companies have delivered. be it a canon sony fuji panasonic and even nikon. Olympus has fallen. Though nothing stops peopke and you just need to go out and shoot. Great video. awesome skating i loved the big wheels!
Been using my GH5 since 2019. I’ve loved it and don’t plan to change any time soon (unless I decide to upgrade to the GH6 but I’m in no rush). As you mentioned the biggest downside is the autofocus and low light performance. As a vlogger, these aren’t ideal but you learn to work around these limitations.
I like that you talk about finding deals on the used market. When it was first released it was $2000 for the body. I JUST picked up another GH5 with a metabones speed booster and a couple of cheap lenses for $350. Too good to pass up. 🔥 Now I have a second angle/photo cam. 😌

It feels weird seeing a video on the 'retro' GH5 because I still have mine and feels like only yesterday that I bought it. It's proof that Panasonic knocked it out the park with this camera as it is still relevant today. I laugh when I see all the hate for the poor AF performance because right from the get-go I assigned AFL to the front custom button, a trick that few people talked about but one that I picked up from a GH5 user group early on. Focus locks instantly and can be used while recording to change focus. It's fast and I've never missed a shot. All those people who didn't buy the camera because of AF performance completely missed out. And shutter angle in a prosumer camera in 2017? Sony STILL doesn't include shutter angle in many of its much newer, video-orientated models!
I'd never use with a ninja 5, there isn't any point, u csnt get better codes, so I'd recommend a cheaper monitor or somthing unless u have some camers that can benefit from its recording capabilities like pro res etc

The GH5 was the best camera ever! There was nothing like it at the time, and it still holds up.
shucks, I'm still shooting on an old NEX 7 and just bought a "new" A7Sii... I think too many people get caught up in chasing specs instead of just using the gear they have and making the most of it.

Big MFT Lumix fan,curious what do you think about the IQ of the opengate mode 6K 420 10bit...personaly I prefer the Alli 422 400mbs 16/9 which is imho better
But for social media Open Gate it is great.
Because I am mostly shooting in low light I migrated with time towards Lumix FF...nowdays half of my park is MFT half FF Lumix.
Mostly shooting multicam event classical music orchestra concerts...
I still have 2 GH5's and they're my main workhorses. My S1 is great, too, but it weighs as much as a truck and doesn't give me the same joy. An S5ii would probably resolve that, but all things in time. Or not.
I feel that, I love my s5IIx but a gh5 with a 14mm pancake will always be what I grab if im traveling light!
The same(maybe even more) could be said about the original S5 and it's full frame.

I never had a GH5, but a G9, because I need a better photo body to compliment my GH4 at the time. Even today, I use the G9 as my B boy shooting vid, and use it almost exclusively on my DJI RS 3 gimbal because of how much lighter it is than it's equivalent on l-mount. I really, really like the G9, and would probably roll with the G9ii if I wasn't so starved for an S1ii replacement that'll probably never be announced at this rate. Oh, well. CP+ show starts soon, but since they already announced the 28-200mm lens, that might be all they have to show. Adversely, that lens was rumours one day and announced the next, basically, so maybe we won't get "leaks" weeks or months in advance.
TLDR, where's my damned S1ii, or whatever.

for $1500 I would choose the S5II, the Gh5 is great but I use it now as a B cam to my S5IIX not my primary camera
