Hi Shane, we have a Sony Bravia TV that has a lot of preinstalled apps but not the Apple TV app. After watching your very well explained Apple gadget’ and apps’ uses, I still don’t know if I need an Apple TV box or if there’s a way of installing the app on the smart Sony tv. Thanks, Gabriela
I know this is an old video so sorry for the question. I currently have a Roku tv, if I plug in a apple tv “box” will it take over for the tv. Will I need to set the Roku to said hdmi that the apple “box” is plugged into and work that way? I really don’t want to buy a new tv just for the Apple TV “box”. As alway great content
I have been using an appleTV HD for years and am looking at a new 4K TV. If I get one that includes the appleTV app do I need to get the appleTV 4K. Is there much of a difference between the box and app?
Is Apple TV+ similar to Netflix...pay one monthly fee gives access to a library of movies, or is it similar to Amazon where you get to watch Apple content but have to pay for non Apple TV content? Thanks.
Is the resolution on the apple app will be the same as the resolution that you your smart TV has? I have an LG 2020 model and I am not sure if you upgrade to the new 2021 Apple TV. Would like your feedback, thanks!
Been using apple products ever since I can remember talking Macintosh days, not sure what purpose the Apple TV device serves, seeing as most of those apps can be installed on smart tvs anyway. Genuinely asking but what would be the usage for Apple TV?
I am trying to watch the new movie called "Spirited" on the Apple TV app but there is no place to rent it. Any suggestions on how to rent this movie?TY
Great explanation about Apple services. I own iMac, iPad, and iPhones.. and Ring cameras. My frustration is that Apple and Ring don't get along without me using 3rd party.software. Any suggestions?
Do I need an Apple TV box in order to use the Homepod Mini as stereo speakers, or can I use them as stereo speakers with a regular TV that is Apple Airplay?
Thank you! I couldn’t figure that crap out. I have a subscription to Apply TV but it keeps taking me to Amazon Prime (which I already have a subscription to). It is one big mess.
Apple needs to invest in TV Channels as much as TV+. TV+ is just another Apple TV Channel showcasing the rest of them. I love using channels and wish Disney+, Discovery+ and Peacock were all integrated as channels too. Being able to download everything offline, getting Picture in Picture mode on tvOS, and just an overall better UI and menu system than separate apps all make Channels way better to use than any other video streaming app. They just need to get more channels on board.
I agree. I sometimes subscribe to apps like Starz, Epix, Showtime & Paramount+ through Amazon Prime Channels because I like the playback interface better on Prime Video, especially the X-Ray features. Some streaming service apps have horrible playback controls, but then I noticed that some shows like Star Trek: Strange New World's & Halo playbook in 4K HDR10+ & Dolby Vision on their native apps & only 1080p Full HD on Prime Video Channels. But on the Apple TV app they playback in the highest picture quality & I have a great playback interface. But on my Fire TV Stick 4K Max & Samsung Smart TV Apple makes it impossible to link the apps without an iOS device.🤷🏻♂️
Can you purchase and rent movies through the Apple TV app on your LG smart TV? Will my purchases from iTUnes show up there as well? Thanks for the informative video!
Would have been nice to visually see what he didn’t like about user experience between the actual TV and the TV app. I’m not sure about the real differences but I’m getting a TV this week with Apple TV app installed. I just don’t know enough about the apple TV advantages - would help to see that comparison in action.
ok. I am still confused. first question. if I have a 4k Roku streaming stick and I downloaded the Apple Tv app do I need a physical Apple Tv box to watch 4k Dolby vision content? if I understand you correctly people need Apple Tv physical box if they also want to be able to download other apps like HBO etc. with the app you only can rent or buy movies or subscribe to Apple Tv + and watch all the content, am I right or not? now the second question. in the Apple tv app when you want to rent or buy any movie or you are subscribed to Apple Tv + service under every movie info says that this movie or show you can watch in 4k Dolby vision or Dolby Atmos, the question is does Apple tv app support 4k Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, of course, I understand that you have to have 4k Tv and Dolby Atmos sound bar or home theater system
Yes and no. If you enable HDMI-CEC on your Apple TV and your TV, then your tv will turn on/off when you wake/sleep your Apple TV. So, your tv won't show up in homekit obviously if it doesn't support HomeKit, but it can come on and off with Apple TV through that CEC feature.
I am new . How do I watch a movie that places itself into “UP NEXT”? I just want to watch a movie , Vicky Christina Barcelona . It WILLL NOT PLAY . So I find the “up Next “ thing? It’s not there so I put it back and it STILL WONT PLAY! Yes we can play other movies. I’m mad at this confusing thing
I can't seem to figure out how to view my Eve camera recordings on the Apple TV. I can look at the live feed but there doesn't seem to be a way to "get to the bottom of the screen" like on the iPhone or on my MAC.
I have a question can I use my Apple tv divise that is in my living room on my smart tv in my bedroom or do I have to have an apple tv on each tv in my house?

I have a few Phillips hue lights. The homekit support will depend on which hub you have. I don't think the first generation hue bridge supports homekit anymore. So compatibility will depend on which hub you have.
If I want to watch through a steaming service like Philo, do I just need the Apple TV app. Do I need to subscribe to Apple TV+ to use that service, or is Apple TV+ a separate steaming service? This is all new to me. I'm going to try it out on my newer iMac.
I bought the Eufy Cam 2 pro cameras today. Set it up on Homekit and can access via my iPad, iPhone, and iMac but, for the life of me I can't get the video to stream to the Apple TV. Hey Shane, great video. Just got the Samsung 4K 82" TV with the apple app already installed. What is better for best video quality? Hooking up the ethernet cable to the TV or Apple TV box (i don't have, yet...) Thanks.
@@itguru2037 i got the Apple TV box and hooked it up with the ethernet cable and it the clarity last night was nothing better than my Frontier Fios TV. I'm going to test out the ethernet to TV tonight to see if there is any better connection. I'm also testing out FuboTV and might get rid of Frontier TV if clarity is better and cheaper! thanks!
Thanks Tom! Regards to video quality alone, not sure it matters too much. What matters more is probably the source of the videos, or which apps you watch from. Here’s some info for watching g from the Apple TV app regarding video quality: support.apple.com/en-us/HT207949
No. You have to have either a physical Apple TV device, an iPod (which has to stay plugged in and available at all times if you want to access your devices remotely), or a HomePod/HomePod Mini and you have to designate which one you have as a HomeKit enabled device. There is a lot of information on how to do this on Apple's web site or you can watch Shane's video on "HomeKit: Getting Started" which is also a great resource.
Hey Shane, does apple TV work on a Xiaomi TV? I recently got a homepod but couldn't get it to connect to my Xiaomi TV. Wanted to get an apple TV so I can use my home pod as speaker for TV. What do you think? Thanks!
You shouldn't have to link anything in the Apple TV app. It should consolidate content from other apps that you are signed into on the tv. Although, as mentioned, it doesn't work that great on my LG smart tv either.
So I just sub to Peacock Tab and have a smart Samsung TV. I don’t have a Roku, FS or and Apple TV. But I do use iPhone and iPad! But my understanding is that Samsung does not support all models using Peacock. I can mirror the app and see it on the screen but when I hit plan, no video is cast only sound. I don’t know if you have any suggestions. I think I may have to invest into a roku, Or an Apple TV!
What content do I have access to with the Apple TV other than third-party streaming services I'm paying extra money for? Does Apple TV have its own free library of content like Netflix or Amazon Prime?
The Apple TV (the hardware box) is just a streaming device… similar to a Roku or Firestick. It does not include a library of content. Only apps that you can download, some with free content maybe, but it all depends on the apps and services you are subscribed to. Apple TV + (the subscription) is an content subscription, that includes all original content.
It doesn't run iTunes, but it runs Apple Music. But you can use "Home Sharing" to share media from a computer to your Apple TV. You can also access a NAS using certain apps like Plex, for example to access your media.
I have about three or four nest cameras it I need to figure out how to integrate with my new HomeKit set up I just received The HomePod mini and the 10.2 inch iPad
10 seconds in, and I’m already liking the video. Although this is a one off question, so I’m not planning on subscribing, but you should know that as a newcomer, the presentation was awesome.
Love Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and lots more on the AppleTV+ streaming service. However I am torn between the AppleTV app and the UA-camTV app as I switch back and forth between the two.
I’m an xfinity customer too and I like watching live sports, like watching shows on tv like on fox or cbs. In the xfinity cable guide , I can see everything that’s on and coming on. On appletv, can I watch any of my shows / live sports, etc. through that interface? If so, does having that cable box even matter? I’m in this weird situation where I want to use the appletv only (have not used it yet - needs to be set up) but I feel like I need the cable box too
Hey Tanner. There are a number of ways to get access to live tv on the Apple TV. Regarding xfinity, it will really just depend if they have an Apple TV app (not sure if they do). I currently use Spectrum, and even used them for years back when I had a cable box. For a long time Spectrum didn't have an Apple TV app, but now they do. So I can now sign into the Spectrum app on the Apple TV and access all the live content in a similar interface as the cable box, with no need for a cable box anymore. There are a number of providers for live tv that will work on the Apple TV. I tried out a number of them: Hulu live, DirectTV Stream, UA-cam TV, Sling, etc. Interface and pricing may vary, but options are there.
Defending Jacob amazing!!! i have one question if i have 2 homepods mini in my room just to buy an TV with airplay and homekit they works like stereo? or i need the apple tv the fisical?
You can set up two HomePod mini's to be a stereo pair. Then you can STREAM audio from a device that has AirPlay2 capability to the speakers. If your TV supports Airplay2, then you can stream the audio from the TV to the HomePod Mini's. However, this will only give you 2-channel stereo sound. If you want to use surround sound, then you have to get an A/V receiver with at least 5.1 capabilities or higher (11.2 and up) and multiple speakers. As far as I know, you cannot use HomePod Mini's as surround sound speakers. The can only be used as a stereo pair. You can however put several HomePod Mini's throughout your house to have Whole House audio. When using multiple audio channels in a Home Theater setup, the first number (5, 7, 9, 11, et cetera, is the number of speakers like center channel, right and left front channel, back surrounds, side surrounds, and height speakers. The second number (.1, .2), is the number of subwoofers that you have. Most systems that people have in their homes only have 1 subwoofer.
Good question. To answer, yes you would need an Apple TV box to output audio to homepods. TVs with Airplay support allow for Airplay audio input, but not Airplay audio as output. Hope that makes sense.
Hey, Shane. Have you seen the new Nanoleaf essentials? The bulbs are fairly cheap compared to the Phillips Hue bulbs. It seems as though the HomeKit and app support is still in its beginning stages but would you consider checking them out with regard to HomeKit? Are they worth it or should we stick with Hue bulbs?
Hey Michael. Yes, I am familiar with them. I used one in a brief Thread demo on my recent HomePod Mini Review video. I do plan to make more content around thread and these Nanoleaf essentials in the future.
Not sure. If you have an Apple TV+ subscription, you should automatically be able to access that content from the Apple TV app (as long as you are signed in to the correct account).
Thank you, I’ve been going crazy trying to figure out how to mirror my iPhone to the Apple TV app on my tv which I’m sure I used to be able to do and think there was a sneaky update that changed it to Apple TV plus.
I don’t have the AppleTV yet but when I do will it’s Basic functions like play and pause show up in HomeKit as a tile so I can “ Control a device” when TV plays: turn off overhead light, turn mood Light blue or TV pauses: turn on overhead light 100%.
No, unfortuantly you can't trigger automations with the Apple TV. But you can integrate certain Apple TV actions into siri shortcuts, like wake, sleep, open apps, etc.
I haven't had TV+ for long but so far my favourite series has been Mythic Quest - I haven't gotten around to Ted Lasso or The Morning show yet - So perhaps I'm speaking to soon judging by other people comments haha
So back to your Sonos for great audio quality or will you go all google or amazon echo ? Maybe she’ll out thousands of dollars for bang and Olufson as opposed to Apple’s $299 price tag ?
Are you able to for talking sake, an LG HomeKit enabled tv could you set the HomePod’s as the audio source with airplay like you can with the Apple TV box?
No. TVs, even with airplay support, are not able to push audio as output. So when you see that "airplay" support on smart TVs, it is only able to accept airplay as input. Hope that makes sense. You will need an Apple TV (box) to push audio to HomePods.
So you have to buy the box and pay for subscriptions?
This is literally the video I wanted to see

Only apps that you can download, some with free content maybe, but it all depends on the apps and services you are subscribed to. Apple TV + (the subscription) is an content subscription, that includes all original content.
I can use this on a roku tv or a regular tv?
The Apple TV app? You can use it on any device that it comes installed on (yes on Roku and certain smart TVs)
i’m going probably buy 2 today at a Pawnshop they have 2 for $120 each the new 4k 32gb new in box
Does apple tv run itunes, and will it access a network attached storage device and play audio playlists.
To integrate nest into homekit, you may want to look at the Starling Hub or Hoobs.
@@ShaneCreates thanks man
10 seconds in, and I’m already liking the video. Although this is a one off question, so I’m not planning on subscribing, but you should know that as a newcomer, the presentation was awesome.
Well, thank you for the feedback!
Love Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and lots more on the AppleTV+ streaming service. However I am torn between the AppleTV app and the UA-camTV app as I switch back and forth between the two.
Ted Lasso, definitely. Thanks for the HomeKit 101 Series.
@@ShaneCreates I appreciate the reply! I feel like I can make the appletv work and get used to it.
How come i dont see my apple tv + subscription on the apple tv?
I wanted to see you work thru the live tv channels
For all mankind is the most underrated show on Apple TV+
I though Apple TV was an actual tv...I was thinking which tv size should I get 😆
I don’t have the AppleTV yet but when I do will it’s Basic functions like play and pause show up in HomeKit as a tile so I can “ Control a device” when TV plays: turn off overhead light, turn mood Light blue or TV pauses: turn on overhead light 100%.
No, unfortuantly you can't trigger automations with the Apple TV. But you can integrate certain Apple TV actions into siri shortcuts, like wake, sleep, open apps, etc.
@@ShaneCreates I’m definitely going to rewatch your Control your ATV with HomePod video again. I believe you put a link to the shortcut/automations.
I still don’t understand.. so I need the box? Because I have a free subscription from Verizon..does this mean I need the box?
If you have an Apple TV+ subscription, all you need is the Apple TV app.
@@ShaneCreates I just have the subscription
This video is gold
You explained this so well!!! Thank you so much!!
I use Apple TV and Apple TV channels and I love it been using it for 3 years now
I’m all in on Ted Lasso. Tehran was good also.
I haven't had TV+ for long but so far my favourite series has been Mythic Quest - I haven't gotten around to Ted Lasso or The Morning show yet - So perhaps I'm speaking to soon judging by other people comments haha
Mythic Quest is another favorite. Great show!
Great, informative video, thank you! (I wonder how many times you had to say, "Apple" though. 🤣😂)
Hey I’m wondering can you watch local channels you know like live channels like cable has live football and li e sports and news
So back to your Sonos for great audio quality or will you go all google or amazon echo ? Maybe she’ll out thousands of dollars for bang and Olufson as opposed to Apple’s $299 price tag ?
Cleared that up for me thanks
Are you able to for talking sake, an LG HomeKit enabled tv could you set the HomePod’s as the audio source with airplay like you can with the Apple TV box?
No. TVs, even with airplay support, are not able to push audio as output. So when you see that "airplay" support on smart TVs, it is only able to accept airplay as input. Hope that makes sense. You will need an Apple TV (box) to push audio to HomePods.
@@ShaneCreates yeah makes sense, good man, Keep up the good work!
