    I really like the Signals app and just created the flashing light shortcut you did. Since this video is a little older, do you know if there is now a way to get this shortcut to run based on a certain time of day? I can’t seem to figure it out but it may be because it is just not possible.

      Exactly. I called Apple about it but I think I need to check the developers forum. I tried once but the page was either frozen or I'm a moron, probably the later. The other thing is I like to sleep to Stream sounds but when I add the Apple TV to my room in Home, I get about 10 minutes of stream sound then it cuts off. So I now just Airplay my Apple TV 4K to the Homepods. I must be doing something wrong.

    Hi Shane, I have set a conversational shortcut with “choose from menu” via iPad according to your steps shown in the video, it works fine on HomePod mini, but Siri didn”t ask the prompt question I entered, Siri only provided the answers. How can I make Siri to ask my prompt question? Thx

  • @cartermw

    I’m about to add more HomePods especially after this video. I also need a few more light strips for flashing colored light via Signals.
    I’m ultra excited to start using conversational Shortcuts. Having my HomePods ask me which alarm I want to set will be killer.
    But all of these great HomePod suggestions will not work for me, because I’m very hard of hearing, as good unless I can adjust HomePods speaking volume separately from media volume. This ability is available on HomePod 14.4 but is buggy. I hope Apple fixes it soon and will make it where a HomePod user can use Audomations, where you can control boath Siri’s speaking and media volume sort of like the slider during your “whisper” section.
    Oh, I thought the part of your this week’s video where tv you were interrupted by “you on your phone, was awesome and I hope you do this a little in future UA-cam videos.

    I would love to see a video of how to make a Shortcut that can be run in the HomePod mini that does the following: Function as a Time for Bed, that gets the actual day when you are running it, and based on that reads you the entries for the next day on your calendar, and after that asks you if you want to set your alarm for classes, but coding an if that based on the day of the week, knows which alarm to turn on (for example I have classes since 8:30am on Mondays and Fridays, but Tuesdays-thursdays at 7am). I would love to see you do it! Great video by the way. I think making this creation of shortcuts or automations a series would be AWESOME!

    What about a volume switch kind of like the Sonos you can use the pico remote is that possible with a button or switch?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому

      Sure that should be possible. WIth the pico remote, you'd probably have to use homebridge or something like that to expose the button actions to HomeKit. But any homekit button should work. I think you'll have to "convert to shortcut" in order to control the HomePod, but it should work.

    • @ShaneCreates

      Thanks Theo. Well, I previously did that by using the "ask" or "speak" actions and then using the "dictate" to get the answer, so on an so forth. But at some point, with an update to the HomePods, that stopped working like it used. So there might be another way, but I haven't found one that works reliably on the HomePod lately.

    Great video and the Signals app suggestion, purchased. Is there a way to run a Signal in a HomeKit automation? I had a leak under my sink and I was lucky I was on my iPad when I got the Aqara notification that a leak was detected. It would be great if I can flash the lights also.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому

      Thanks @Vito D! No, unfortunate you can't run signals as a part of a home automation at the moment, since the signals app requires your personal device to run (like Siri Shortcuts from all apps). You can however natively create a flashing effect using "convert to shortcut." You just won't have some of the nice extra features you get with the signals app, like returning lights to the original color, etc.
      Check out the chapter: "Create a Home Automation/Convert to Shortcut" from this video that shows how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/GHnnNjoTBCo/v-deo.html

Thanks in advance for your help !

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Gerardo! Yea, I don't think there is anything you can do about that. It appears to be an update that Apple has implemented regarding nfc automations with secure HomeKit accessories such as a lock or garage door. Other types of automations with these secure accessories always required user authentication to execute, so it appears that they have implemented the same thing with nfc automations.

    Shane, very super cool video. I loved the way you did the advertisement in your video. That was very creative. It actually had me watching the entire advertisement without groaning and rolling my eyes. Your production quality is top notch and you have come a long way since first putting videos out on UA-cam. A lot of other UA-camrs could definitely improve by watching your videos and incorporating some of your production values into their videos. A lot of them have good things to say but their videos are so hard to watch. Yours on the other hand are a pleasure to watch and I look forward to each Sunday to see what you will come up with next. Hey, maybe you need to start another channel on production quality of videos and how to make your content better and more presentable. That should help probably over 80% of the UA-camrs out there.
    One thing I found was that you can set the volume level for SIRI in SIRI shortcuts to a specific level. For instance in my Morning Routine Shortcut, the first thing I do is set the Volume level to 60%. Then I have SIRI give me all of the pertinent information that I need, like weather forecast, my first appointment on my work calendar, the time it will take me to get to the client's residence, and so forth; then I set the volume level back up to 100%. That way when my Wake Up Alarm is turned off and the short cut is run, SIRI talking to me isn't so jarring and I don't disturb others in the house who may be sleeping in later than me.
    I did get several new ideas from your video. Please keep them coming as they are greatly appreciated.
    Quick question: How did you fix the misspelling in your video that you showed where you removed the letter "b" and replaced it with a space? Whenever I make a spelling mistake, I try to touch the screen with my fingertip to put the cursor where I want it without much success. I usually end of getting it close and then using the backspace key to erase everything though the mistake and then retyping in the information. This is extremely frustrating and time consuming. You made it look so easy.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words Frederick! It is much appreciated!
      Great tip in setting the volume of the HomePod in your shortcut. Glad the video gave you some more ideas. That's the goal! 😃
      To answer your question... (buckle up, this is a lifesaver and may blow your mind) when typing, press and hold on the space bar. Then you can drag your cursor around the screen and find the right spot much easier. I use it ALL the time!

  • @fluxcapacitor

    02:38 Isn't this setting the volume control for the _songs_ played on the HomePod? The sheet is event entitled "Media" top of the page. It seems to me that the volume of _Siri's voice_ is *independent* of it. For example, one can vocally ask Siri to lower the sound volume of the music playing, while asking separately Siri to speak louder. So I wonder if the setting that is shown here is what you really want to achieve.

      Great question! I should have mentioned that. Shortcuts are tied to specific users so I believe you need to have “recognize my voice” turned on so you can run personal requests from the HomePod.
      Luckily, you can easily share a shortcut to a family member or roommate if you wanted to. Once it is on their device they should be able to run the shortcut also.

  • @AhmadNazirAfiq

    Flashing lights trick is pretty neat, I’m setting up manually using If statement so that it goes back to previous state and put it in automation. The bad thing about Signal is that you have to manually trigger it.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому +1

      Well you can use it in any “personal” automation. But yea, for home automations you would not be able to.
      When you say that you are doing it manually, are you able to get the light’s exact state (brightness and color) and return it to that after flashing the lights?

    • @AhmadNazirAfiq
      @AhmadNazirAfiq 3 роки тому

      @@ShaneCreates My bad, I should rephrase that. I set my lightstrip to orange at night and blue to denote the temperature is comfy. One of my automation is to flash my lightstrip to blue five times once my air-conditioner turns off.
      By adding an IF “Formatted Date” is between “7” and “19” (the number refers to time in hours), set the lightstrip in another IF statement in it as well.
      Eg; If my bedlight is on between 7am and 7pm, set the lightstrip to off once the comfy automation ends, otherwise (outside of those hours), the lightstrip turns orange (which denotes night time) as long as bedlight is off.
      Tried my best to explain it here, a screenshot would’ve been easier haha

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому +1

      @@AhmadNazirAfiq That makes sense, thanks for the explanation! I've done similar things based on time or other factors with the IF statement. I've been able to "get" the state of a light, and I could then turn a light back on or off to whatever color I choose, but still haven't found a way to return the same exact state as it was before like Signals can do (other than on or off). That would be great if there was a way to do that.

    I am thinking of moving from Echo's to Homepods in my home since I've also been converting to Homekit. With the Echos, you can create speaker groups, for example; Upstairs, Downstairs, Everywhere, etc. Is this possible with Homepods using zones? Hey Shane, I'm trying to setup a shortcut/automation to do a simple thing, for my homepod to speak a text announcement when I come home. For some reason, I cannot find the usual way of doing this (selecting TEXT and then SPEAK TEXT), the option just isn't there, could I be doing something wrong?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому

      No, you aren't doing anything wrong. It's because you are trying to set up a "home" automation, and when doing that, we don't have all the usual actions available to us as when creating a "personal" automation. Home automations must run on the homekit hubs (as opposed to our personal iOS devices) therefore we are much more limited to what we can do.

    Not sure what I’m doing wrong, but when the signal finished, my lights don’t go back to their previous state. They just turn off. And I don’t have the checked in the “finished” section of the Signal
    So looks like it works when run from a shortcut, but when testing the signal in the app it doesn’t go back to previous state

      No, it is only accessible within personal shortcuts or automations since it requires the app running on your iPhone, as opposed to "convert to shortcut" or home automations that run on your homekit hubs.

      @@ShaneCreates That's right -- this takes advantage of the 'Personal Requests' feature of the HomePod, and runs the shortcut directly on the phone of whoever made the request. Signals does allow 'Family Sharing' with the Signals Plus purchase (not sure how obvious Apple makes this), so you won't need to purchase the app more than once

    Hi Shane. There is a huge discussion on Danish homekit social media. Is it possible to activate a scene by only turning on the Apple tv. Ex. If you turn it on with your remote then it starts a scene or something. I have tried for days now but i cant find a way. I know its possible on homekit enabled tv’s, but other ways around i cant find. Do you have a solution or maybe someone? Thanks. By the way i need a discord pass.

    • @ShaneCreates

      The only way I can think of is to use a smart plug that monitors energy and plug the ATV into that. Then make an automation when the plug starts to draw more power, set the scene. I’m assuming that would work. Maybe there is another way using homebridge but I haven’t explored that.

    When I say "Hey Siri, dinner time" it always reply "I'm not sure I understand". The same happens for all the other shortcuts. Also, very often Siri loses the internet connection and is unable to add notes/reminders and what not.

    I am having a really difficult time generally getting things to happen on the device that I want them to using shortcuts and automation. As a couple of examples, I setup a personal automation that says when I start a running workout, start playing a particular playlist. Well when I started the run on my watch, the music started playing on my phone, rather than my watch. When I turned my phone off, I ran it again and the music didn't start at all.
    Another, I set up a shortcut called "Laundry" where I simply just want Siri to set a timer for 68 minutes. When I say "Laundry" to siri on my HomePod, she starts a timer on my phone. This isn't helpful as if I am out and my wife is doing laundry, she will not hear the timer.
    How can I get a better feel for how to correctly make things happen WHERE I want them to happen? Are these shortcomings of the ecosystem or am I screwing things up?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому

      This is more about understanding how the shortcuts run. Standard shortcuts actually are running from your iPhone, even if you trigger them somewhere else like a HomePod.
      So if you run a shortcut from the HomePod, for example, that is considered a personal request and can only be done by the individual with the phone close by. Home automations and the "convert to shortcut" feature, run on the homekit hubs (like a HomePod) but are more limited in their functionality. So anyways, that is why if you set a timer through a shortcut, it will set it on your phone rather than the HomePod. For this application, you'd be best to just tell the HomePod "Hey Siri, set a Laundry timer for 68 minutes." Hope this helps.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  3 роки тому +1

      iPhone apps cannot be used when setting up home automations unfortunately. And Signals is still an app that must run on the personal device. Hopefully this changes one day.
      You can still flash your lights by setting up a home automation, you just have to script it out natively using convert to shortcut. And you won't get some of the added features you would get by using the Signals app, like returning the light to the exact color and state as before. I discuss this method in the "Home Automation" chapter of this video: ua-cam.com/video/GHnnNjoTBCo/v-deo.html
