@@laurenwilliams2138 Hey Lauren, we built ours with pressure treated 2 x 4' x 24" s in the corners set into the ground,. rough pine boards make the 4' x 4' base. Skinny strips of pine nailed together into an "L" for the vertical uprights. Horizontal strips tie the uprights together with corner braces. Our tops are semi-curved pine arches. We made a template and cut the four pieces to match with a jigsaw. They're joined together into a short 4 x 4 block. We cut 3/4" dados into each side of the block and camfered the corners on a table saw. We nailed little filler blocks into the dados to "trap" the semi-curve arches as a mortise. We put a square cap block on top of the 4 x 4 and finished it off with a pressure treated finial we ordered from Home Depot. We stained the wood with a mix of roofing tar and paint thinner. You could build out of cedar if you'd rather, or all pressure treated. If you plan on painting, it's best not to use pressure treated lumber.

Also called the ‘genius loci’ Latin for spirit of the place. Some places already have it as a result of good design, or sometimes it’s strong in temples or ancient sites. But if you have a blank slate, you can create it out of thin air by channeling your art. I’ve just discovered Siloe, he has an absolute talent for it 🤩

You said “thank you so much for watching this video”. I say “thank you so much for making this video”. I have the regular lawn with planting around the perimeter, but the cottage I live in is 350 years old. I don’t like my garden in its current form but have not known really how to change it. My garden means so much to me (I have been gardening for 50 years) and this is the first time I have wanted to follow somebody else’s ideas. My very grateful thanks to you from an old thatched cottage in England.

I was so transported into my own “dreamland” by this video. My brothers are artists, and everything they touch , even a chair with coffee, and books, is soul touching. Like them, you are both an artist, and a craftsman, “par excellance”. I don’t hope to garner enough talent, or vision to match your gardens, but the fact that they seem to just erupt out of God-given small spaces and corners is inspiring….Man loving, and cooperating with Creation is the most wonderful part of life!❤️

This idea of a suburban homestead is right up my alley and everything that I hope to have one day. Thank you so much for your channel and for the attention to detail that you put in your videos. I have shared this video with at least five people who would also take interest in some thing like this. I feel inspired and like my dreams can one day become a reality. As an artist myself, I think it’s really important as well that you talked about the elements of design. So many people don’t realize how important that is to have a beautiful space. One of the best gardening videos I've seen. I can see why everybody loves this. The choice of "slides" to demonstrate elements of garden design was better than anything I've seen on any major production garden show and it didn't always focus on gardens but places and styles. This was definitely the best way to relay these concepts. The "final" cottage garden was a little too casual for my taste but of course this is just a matter one's own personal style.

@@suburbanhomestead and I love the longer docs as well- they are like little film jewels! Please do a house tour - if comfortable with the idea- I see so much beauty in your new house! Would love to see the before and after. My husband is a modernist while I love all things vintage, regency, Belle Epoch and ethnic. And I like to mix modern in with it all. A kind of hint of steam punk too. Please check out Benedetta Bonichi’s art. I think you’ll love her half myth/ Half animal art. Anthropomorphic chic is what I call it and it looks great with antiques! I framed a print of her work above my spinet piano- just magical. Since you’re and artist I’m sure you have gorgeous originals throughout your home.
      Many blessings!

I have a productive permaculture garden that helps to feed me and my family of 6. I am a new gardener and over the years I spent a lot of money from plants from the nursery and deer will eat it or they don’t make it. It’s so sad because I just bought my new house and I am on the budget. Yes, taking it slow and understanding your land is key. I only deal mostly with groundhogs, so I can only imagine how destructive heavy deer pressure can be. I hope some of the ideas can help you get to a better garden. You might have to install a fence or only use plants that are poisonous to deer, which is difficult.

Some gardeners like artists have the ability to see the big picture and an end result in their minds eye. I love to see something that others might think looks like it's ready for the junk pile and in my mind I create a whole new look for it. I do a lot of mental creating when I shop at garden centers or go to auctions and view "barn finds" that wording on an auction bill gets my creative juices going.
