The Uglier Side Of George Foreman Grills

  • The "Walmartization" of George Foreman grills has had its consequences... :-\
...and yeah I think the music needs to be turned up a bit. :-) I think I forgot to shut off the volume normalizer on my sound system in post... :-)
Ultimately though, friction, the laws of Physics, and the eventual need for workarounds as nonstick coating wears down gets kind of annoying with George Foreman Grills... :-\
Also worth noting - Spectrum Brands has improved things since I recorded this video, so it remains a product of its time. :-)

Since this video's heyday, Spectrum Brands has fixed their supply chain hiccups and improved the nonstick coating on the surface of the plates. 🙂 I actually now have an extra pair of plates when the ones I'm using now wear out. I just don't cook as much on the grills as I used to. But hey, enjoy this snarky ol' video from 2019. 😊

I had my last electric grill for 5 years and no sticking. Been using my George foreman for a month and it’s immaculate. My secret is after cooking, close the lid and leave it on, when it gets to full heat, wipe it with a soapy wet cloth, then rinse and wipe with just wet cloth. We had it on bbqs in the past while camping and just learned the best way to get them clean is to do it straight away while hot. Once it’s cooled off you ain’t getting it off with any grill. Hope this helps

Put in a wet paper towel while it's still warm, let it steam itself clean. Newer plates have better coating, like copper or ceramic.

if your teflon surfaces have been worn out just wrap the plates in aluminium foil, each wrapping will last you 3-4 uses before stuff starts sticking to it too well

I just use a light coat of spray on extra virgin olive oil on the plates first. You've got oil and grease in your food, but at first point of contact, you now have a oil as a barrier. Oh and NEVER let it cool down before cleaning. Wipe excess crap off the plates while its still hot/warm. A damp dish rag or cloth works well.

@@vabvaab Parchment paper will ignite. Trust me. I thought I was so darn smart. Almost burned down my kitchen. The reason is the paper is usually covered with batter or dough, the main idea being to keep a non-stick surface between a baking pan, loaf pan, sheet pan, etc. The edges will only turn a little brown, sometimes if you use more than your baking pan needs. So you are supposed to have layers of metal or glass between your food and the heat source. On these grills, you are putting the paper directly on the heat, and guys-it's STILL paper!!! It will torch up in a moment, scary to see, and honestly, I burned my fingers trying to fling it off the heating surface and into the sink. Smoke, fumes, ashes-it was a nightmare!

those "copper" and ceramic coatings are more durable than classic black teflon, but more moody. once they need actual cleaning, they end up "dry", which can be remedied by heating them up and brushing/wiping on a thin coat of oil.
PS: actual cheese does fine, but processed/american cheese is death to a dry nonstick coating.

The plates require an experience operator to extend the life of the appliance. However, my "beef" with the new version of the "Panera hinged GFG" is that the upper grill plate drains fat onto my countertop when I open lid after cooking burgers etc. The upper plate on original GFG was designed to drip onto the back channel of the lower plate. Now! What a mess!

I just bought the Evolve. The plates are ok, what is troubling me is the heat/time toggle isn't very accurate. You have to find the sweet spot to toggle in between the two because it's flat to the surface, not raised to switch back and forth. I like the different plates though. The red model came with two grill plates, a bake dish, and muffin tin. I will probably buy the additional waffle plates, they're about $20.-- each (set) of 2. It's amazon, so returnable up to 3 months. We'll see.

Different part no's for different retailers is nothing new. It's all to have differences that foil all those "PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE'S" you read. My favorite at one time were vacuum cleaners back in the 90's. Didn't matter if it was Hoover or Eureka. Red plastic housing at K-Mart. Green plastic housing at WalMart. Blue plastic at Circuit City. Etc... Different SKU no's just to foil price matching. Otherwise identical. Eventually that stopped because why should the manufacturers complicate their distribution processes just for the benefit of the retailers?
FYI - I have an even older George Foreman that I've never had to replace the removable plates on. I have had to buy several replacement drip trays but they are black plastic dammit! I lay them in top of the trash to drain while I eat and I keep forgetting they're in there. Buying three replacements (@ $10 a pop) has been enough of a reminder. LOLOLOL

I'm the first one to leave my dishes in the sink... but if you just pour a little water on the grill bottom and spray it on the top then carefully wipe it clean with a wad of paper towel the coating should remain fine for years... if you need more help try dawn and a nylon scrubbie when cold then rinse with it plugged in .. be careful of your fingers! also don't use non stick spray as this breaks down the coating... good luck!

I enjoyed your video and you bring up a lot of good points. I would like to point out the breakdown of the on-stick coating. When an items starts becoming sticky, it is because fat from the food is not being completely removed from the item. To avoid the next phase, which is the peeling of the coating, every few washes, use a nylon scrubby and ammonia to remove the sticky residue. If the fat is left on, and you leave your appliance to cool and sit with food build up, that will also shorten its life span. You know you have your appliance back to non-stick when you can rub your finger over the cooking area and feel and continuous smooth surface. If you still feel sticky sections, heat the surface up and then go at it with Dawn. If it goes as far as peeling, pitch it.

I’m not saying that you sound specifically like Barney. What I was saying is you sound like the actor, that who played the voice of Barney. In other words, as your voice gets higher, you sound like Bob West, that when he talks in his regular voice. Not only have I heard Mr. West talk in his Barney voice, but I’ve also heard him talk in his normal voice. I wasn’t trying to offend you at all. I actually like you and was trying to complement you on how well you speak and furthermore, I agree with what you’re saying about George Foreman grills. Anything made in China, I would not buy, particularly if it is sold in Walmart. The only grill I would buy from Hamilton Beach believe it or not, is there electric indoor searing grill , that which, by the way does not cook things on both sides at the same time. Besides, George Forman did not design that grill contrary to popular belief. Someone by the first name of Michael, that whose last name I cannot pronounce, designed that grill, probably after the design of the McDonald’s clam shell grill Designed by either the McDonald brothers dick and Mack short for Dick or Richard and Maurice McDonald, or could’ve been the person that who bought them out Ray Kroc, the person that who sold them the multi mixers, and who eventually bought them out. Only the McDonald’s clam shell grill did not have , a slanted sloping design. And, it did not have a grease drip tray for all the grease to go into. It cooked in its own grease. So slight difference from the George Foreman grill. The Hamilton Beach, electric indoor, searing grill, that which is what I’m gonna go with now, is all stainless steel and also has a drip tray and both the grill plate and drip tray are easily taken apart for dishwasher washing. So my comment was not to hurt your feelings, it’s because I like how are you sounded like Bob West, that who is a very popular and famous actor in my book. I know it sucks getting old. I feel like I’m getting old prematurely, because of a neurological disorder, I was born with, that which, by the way is causing a lot of devastating health issues, that we did not know about until now.
