The story is so important to the culture. Animism/ancestor-veneration and gender equity is practiced most likely because of this story. The ancient Chamorros chiefs consisted of siblings diarchies of both brother and sister, and titles would be passed down through their mom, and not dad. When a man married a Maga'håga and had kids with her, he would leave so that the Maga'låhi brother would be the one to help take care of the kids and raise them alongside his sister. It was a matrilineal society for the Ancient Chamorros, and a sibling relationship was regarded as more important than a romantic one, something you can see in the story of Fo'na and Pontan
