    As someone who has read the Silmarillion several times, it is easy to get bogged down in the weight of the lore and miss connections with individual characters. You perfectly summarize their stories. And these videos are hilarious and creative. Well done, and keep them coming!

    I really love how you format these videos! And they are amazingly helpful for anything I would want to know about Tolkiens world. Also why did Gandalf send Pippin to light the beacon if he had the ring of 🔥?

      To answer your question:
      * in the books, this doesn't happen. Denethor is a bit different and totally involved in defending the city and orders the beacons to be lit.
      * in the movie, I assume just to give the hobbits more to do and keep the focus of the narrative on them
      BTW... I love LOVE the lighting if the beacons scene so much. Cinema at it's best!!!

    Gandalf is Maiar, so are Balrogs. He did not require a ring of power to fight one. Fëanor was an elf, an exceptionally gifted elf, but an elf nonetheless who fought numerous Balrog at the same time. An older, more powerful entity can take one.
    He wasn’t announcing he has one of the rings that Sauron so desperately sought to one of Sauron’s allies, he was saying “I am a servant to Eru, he who wields the secret fire of creation, playing games with me is not a good idea.”

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  Рік тому +10

      Well said. Great comment. I picture Gandalf's speech to the Balrog as:
      * I am a servant of the secret fire : to me this means a servant of Eru
      * wielder of the flame of anor : to me this a reference to the ring of fire. anor can mean sun or aman, but doesn't personally make any sense to me unless its talking about the ring?
      * not sure I would consider the Balrog one of Sauron's allies or not.
      What do you think?

      Just because Gandalf was a Maiar like the Balrogs does not mean he was their equal. In fact, Gandalf was actually nerfed when he was initially sent to Middle Earth.
      Further, we know that the Maiar who became Balrogs were specifically empowered by Melkor. According to Tolkien, there were only 3 to 7 Balrogs total. We know specific fate of only three. Gothmog, the first lord of the Balrogs, was killed by Ecthelion in the Fall of Gondolin, but Ecthelion was also killed. A second Balrog was killed by Glorfindel. Glorfindel also died in this feat. We don't know that Balrog's name. And Durin's Bane, which was killed by Gandalf, who also died in the attempt (I'm noticing a pattern here).
      The fate of the other Balrogs is unknown, though presumably they were killed in the War of Wrath. The only other named Balrog is Lungorthin who is mentioned in the The Lay of the Children of Húrin. He is also called the Lord of the Balrogs, but it is unclear his authority as it related to Gothmog.
      It's never mentioned that Feanor actually killed a Balrog.

    The Skyrim references brought a smile to my face. I know the times I did play Skyrim were foolish gluttonous times, but I hope the goosebumps that its trailer gives me can be embraced not only as consumptionism.
    (Gandalf as the Dovakhiin was spot on! Really made him a main character like Frodo/Aragorn! Really epic, though not as epic as the original trailer of course, few things are.)
    1:45 Yep, TheGrayHavens did honor to Círdan, he recognized that he (as the only elf in Middle-Earth) had a beard.
    And OMG Círdan was actually born at Cuiviénen, he is the oldest Elf in Middle-Earth! (Though he did not pronounce Cuiviénen correctly.)
    Also, a mistake that TheGrayHavens makes is referring to "Gods" often, while they were Valar, and the name "God", while applicable to Eru, was not used in the legendarium.
    Círdan was granted the greatest gift of foresight out of all the Elves in Middle-Earth, from 2nd Age on. He spoke against the forging of the Rings of Power, but after the damage is done, was gifted Narya by Celebrimbor anyway. Círdan foresaw that Olórin would be the best of the Istari, so when the Wizard arrived at the Havens, the Shipwright gave him Narya.
    "It's the ring of fire that allows him to stand up against the Balrog, pitting the fire that burns and consumes, against the fire that warms and illiminates. The fire that rages and instills fear, against the fire that encourages and gives hope."
    (Though it is still a guess, what really made Gandalf defeat Durin's Bane. Maybe Narya, but maybe the fact that the restraints the Valar put on him were lifted when he faced a foe who was another Maia, that was, moreover, not even supposed to still be there.)
    (Notice the use of music in this video. During the initial game-like sequence, it is the Skyrim OST, then, during a lore-dump, it was the GoT theme, then another game soundtrack during a game-related scene, but then, most importantly...
    When the video turned serious, the LotR music began, and it (being awesome) immediately turned the funny sequence into an epic one.)

      @kazikmajster5650, your the first person to directly mention the Trailer for Skyrim🏆🏆🏆. Honestly, it might be the best trailer for anything I have ever seen.... EPIC! I still remember seeing that trailer 15 years ago and being totally BLOWN AWAY! (poor Starfield 🥲)
      -- yeah I definitely get some flak for referring to the Valar as "gods". Here is my thinking: about 65% of my audience has never read the Sims... so they don't really know the world at all. I can't just use words like Eru or Valinor or Valar. It's sometimes a balancing act to respectfully represent Tolkien knowledge to both the main books/movie only folks, and also the Tolkien literary fans. But you make a fair point. Any suggestions how you would describe them to a casual fan?
      (btw, while the Hobbit movies are not perfect, that Misty Mountains song is FIRE 🔥)
      Really glad you liked the vid! Thanks for the kind words and the awesome comment! I hope you have a great Monday! \(〇◡o)/

    Nice! Could be a nice follow up if you explained Sarumans attempts to forge a ring/if it worked/whats the deal with ring forging etc. Quote: "For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!"

      @thegreyhavens167 happy to give you an idea for you to make another great video! 👍 think It was most certainly not on par with great rings. I think there are two possibilities. 1- even though he was an expert ring lore (and a crafter), he lacked critical knowledge of ring making Sauron/Smiths of Eregion had; and with his (lacking) knowledge of the ring-making process (and with his envy to possess the one ring) he only managed to forge a lower rank ring which is basically a trinket . 2- it was a gift from Sauron.
      In the book of the Fellowship of the Ring, it is stated that Saruman had a certain ring around his finger. Saruman said "For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker..." Saruman was also researching a certain Ring-lore which is also stated in the Fellowship of the Ring book: "Saruman, failing to get possession of the One Ring, would ... have found in Mordor the missing links in his own researches into Ring-lore, and before long he would have made a Great Ring of his own with which to challenge the self-styled Ruler of Middle-Earth". Why he didn't/couldn't is anyone's guess. Envy and impatience might have gotten the better of him.

      @thegreyhavens167 lastly, I personally thought, even though ring was of inferior quality compared to the one / and the three; his ring might have aided him creating a whole race, the uruk-hai

      @forgemeister Рік тому +3

      @praetorian3902 true 😄 Gandalf being the total boss he is, responded perfectly imo. Here is the whole quote:
      "For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!'
      I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered.
      I liked white better,' I said.
      White!' he sneered. 'It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken.'
      In which case it is no longer white,' said I. 'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.'

    While you may be right, I have other thoughts. The location and wielder of the Three Rings of the Elves is kept secret. No one is supposed to know where those rings are. Specifically, no one except four people knew that Gandalf had Narya: Cirdan, Elrond, Galadriel and (obviously) Galdalf himself. If they were meant to be kept secret, why would Gandalf reveal to one of his biggest enemies that he had one of the Elven Rings? It does not appear that Gandalf wanted to actually fight the Balrog ("Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass."). So, why tell the Balrog that he had the ring?
    Admittedly, who knows what the Balrog was doing. After all, he was essentially MIA until the Dwarves found him. So, for about 5000 years, the Balrog was just sitting beneath Khazad-dum for reasons unknown. Bear in mind that Khazad-dum was founded before the First Age, so the Balrog somehow escaped the War of Wrath and then snuck into Khazad-dum to hide out well underneath the city. The Balrog may not have understood the significance of the various rings. That being said, though, it would be difficult to believe that the Balrog had no idea what was going on.

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  Рік тому +2

      I mean, your not wrong! 😅. I think that's a totally reasonable way to read it. Well said.
      I also think it's weird he revealed it. But the word "welder" is so specific..... And Anor, the Sun? Just can't see how it could mean anything else. Though that being said, I doubt the Balrog had any idea what he meant. Maybe G was just trying to be intimidating?

    The elf that gave Gandalf the ring of fire, did he give it to him because he saw the future or because he was a good judge of character and believed that Gandalf is 100% incorruptible (to evil thus will never join it in the future) ? Or some other reason perhaps ?

    • @thegreyhavens167

    Why isn't the Ring of Fire visible, as is the One Ring, to everyone around him? Is the Ring of Fire itself invisible? Does Gandalf keep it hidden?

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  9 місяців тому +4

      Thanks for the great question! For some reason, the three rings of the elves are invisible. Only other ring bearers can see them. And they are considered top secret, no one is allowed to talk about who has them. No one can see Gandalf, Elrond, or Galadriel's rings - except themselves and Frodo (who has the one ring). So if Sauron ever got his ring back, he would instantly know those 3 had the other rings and be able to control their minds and thoughts. So Elrond, Gandalf, and Galadriel were risking a lot to send Frodo into Mordor... risking their very identity and free will. (great comment btw)

      For me, it was very satisfying to see Gandalf bested, for once. It made the enemy seem powerful (Tolkien always seems to under-power his antagonist characters) and therefore the stakes higher. Otherwise, Gandalf seems to be able to defeat anyone/everyone, except for one loss to Sauron (and even was made to win that one on a rematch).

Meanwhile the Witch King was driven off by Aragorn and flooded away by Arwen in Fellowship and killed by a girl and a hobbit in Return of the King. There is NO WAY that the Witch King should have bested Gandalf the White. This was something added in the movie for no reason other than to show that the good guys were in trouble or something. @thegreyhavens167 you still need a video to call this out :)

      @@midknightfalconfan You're making my point for me. By having the main antagonist (since Sauron himself is not active in the battle) so absurdly easily defeated as to be "driven off by Aragorn and flooded away by Arwen in Fellowship and killed by a girl and a hobbit in Return of the King," the side of the enemy looks way too weak. Those were all poor choices. Having the Witch King defeat Gandalf was an excellent choice and a welcome scene, as it reasserted the idea that there was at least some menace and power in the opposing side.

      But if your not in a video mood, here goes:
      * In the movie: I agree with you. They SHOULD use the Army of the Dead to fight Mordor!
      * In the book: the Dead are WAY different. They probably cant fight at all and are not too dangerous. They are instead just SUPER SCAREY 👻. They scare the pirates away from the ships, and Aragorn uses them to get the Armies of Gondor to Minas Tirith to save the day.
      * In both movie and book: there is a "rumor" that Sauron is a Necromancer. Hard to say if it's true or not. If it is though, might not want to take a ghost army towards him!

      Best i can figure, rings increase power, unlock new powers, increase mental fortitude in a unique way, and have some kind of deep connection with the spiritual world.

    Question? when Frodo, bilbo and gollum have the one ring, would they be able to control all the rings of power?

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  Місяць тому

      Great question. Here is what we can say with good certainly:
      1) The Ring will make you "want" to control and dominate all life - so you will definitely try to control the other ring bearers (Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf).
      2) The Ring allows you to be in direct touch with the other ring bearers thoughts and minds.
      3) The Ring allows Sauron to immediately control the minds of the other ring bearers.
      Here is the big question though (and I don't know that there is a definitive answer) --- does the Ring give you the power to do #2 and #3 above?? Or does it just give you the power to #2 and Sauron is using his own power to do the dominating?? What do you think?
      My personal guess is that the Ring gives you power to contact AND dominate the other three. Again, it's only my guess. I also have a theory that Bilbo was using this ability for decades, though did not know it. How come Gandalf never realized that Bilbo's ring was the One Ring? He knew all about it for 60 years... it was kinda obvious, really. So how did Gandalf now know???? My person theory is that Bilbo (who was excellent at hiding) unknowingly used the Ring to control Gandalf's mind to hide it's identity from him - to convince him not to look deeper into it. (Bilbo HATED Gandalf asking about his Ring) It wasn't until Bilbo gave it up and stopped using it, that Gandalf was free from it's influence, and started investigating it.
      There you go - that may be a crazy theory and there is no direct evidence of it. What do you think?

    • @thegreyhavens167
      @thegreyhavens167  Рік тому +1

      Great question. None of this is explicitly spelled out in the books, because the author (Frodo, in this case) does not understand what he is seeing and being told about. But here is my personal opinion on it:
      * Nope, no other mention of anyone outside of Saruman using what I would call "chemical explosives"
      * Others (Sauron, Gandalf) use fire magic, but nothing that would seem like gunpowder. That's a Saruman special.
      In my opinion, Saruman is the god of physics and deep learning. He represents scientific knowledge without moral boundaries. For example he "cross breeds" orcs and men to make the Uruk-Hai, which sounds way more scientific than how others magically create orcs. He makes factories with wheels and gears powered by furnaces, which heavily imply steam engines to me. He industrializes the region around Isengard without regard for the land or pollution, and in the end... all of nature rises against him as the very trees wage war against him.

      Great question... and honestly, I don't have a good answer 😔 Sry about that, but I think it's a mystery (or some would say a plot hole 🤨)
      * The three elven Rings are invisible when worn. (Frodo sees them in the book, but only because he has the One Ring)
      * But Saruman, however, figured out that G had one of the three Rings a couple decades before.... and he was 🤬🤬🤬!!
      * This is one of the main reasons why Saruman went bad in the first place - we was angry and jealous that G had the ring that he wanted.
      * Additionally, it was super powerful and Saruman could have totally used it.
      So... when Saruman captured G why didn't he take it off of him? It makes no sense? (same thing... why did he let G keep his staff and sword I wonder) I personally see it as a tiny plot hole, though others would read it differently. To my knowledge, there is no good explanation. \(〇_o)/

      His spidey senses start going crazy and he gets a bad premonition that if they go into the mines something terrible will happen to Gandalf. He basically tells Gandalf if they go in there he is going to die. G doesn't seem to take it too seriously (at least that's how I read it).

    Why did Gandalf lose to Saruman?

      @julianpumarejo8719, SUPER GREAT QUESTION!!! How does Sman easily capture G and put him atop the tower. I mean in the movie they have a fight scene that feels a bit to "matrix-y" for me. But in the book, seems like G can't even really put up a fight and just surrenders. But how? I mean Tolkien later says in letters that G was more powerful from the start.... and let's not forget that G had a magic ring that made him even MORE powerful. So what's the story? How does a more powerful Gandalf get wrecked by Saruman?
      Well no one know for sure because Gandalf didn't say too much about it, but here are some of my personal theories (all could be wrong 🤣):
      * Urak-hai maybe? Book Gandalf isn't quite the sword fighter as movie Gandalf in my opinion. Maybe they just rushed in and took him?
      * Sman had created a magic ring for himself too. Maybe the ring made him more powerful?
      * The wizards took a pledge not to use their full power. Maybe Sman is breaking the oath and using more of his power somehow, but G is still playing by the rules?
      Even more though: in my mind there is a lot that's wrong with the story. For example, when G gets back to Rivendell he still has his famous sword and his cool staff. So Saruman just let him keep the staff? While in prison up there? And keep his sword also? While a prisoner? And Saruman didn't take his magic ring? What? Whole thing makes no sense. 🤔🤔
      In my personal opinion there is only one answer (at least in universe answer).... Gandalf is not telling us the "true" story. There are things with the wizards that we would not understand or he just doesn't feel comfortable saying, and we are not getting the whole story. We are getting such a high level retelling, that we are missing some significant details. Whatever happened, it was not as simple as Sman put me in jail and I escaped.
      There you go. That's my opinion. What do YOU think is the reason?

      He laid down his life, for a higher purpose, and took it up again. Died and rose again. Hmmmm. For the greater good 🤣 but didn't want to boast.

    ERU: Playing fire with fire will get you burn, didn't I teach you that?
    GANDALF: Aw, c'mon. I've just rested. Why'd bring me back to Middle-Earth?
    ERU: Let me throw you back then.
    GANDALF: Shit. Why throw me at the Amazon site?
    ERU: Dang! Missed throw dirty Hobbit-wannabees
