Pink Floyd - Not Now John / The Fletcher Memorial Home

  • Taken from a 19-minute "video EP" filmed in 1983 for The Final Cut, essentially four music videos in a continuous sequence, directed by Willie Christie, who was Roger Waters' brother-in-law. Scottish actor Alex McAvoy, who played the teacher in the film version of The Wall, had a prominent role in the video EP. Waters appears (though all but his mouth is silhouetted) as a patient singing the lyrics to a psychologist on the grounds of the Fletcher Memorial Home.

    "The Final Cut: A Requiem for the Post-War Dream." Roger Waters' perfect way to criticize Reagan and Thatcher! Though this was Roger Waters' final Pink Floyd album, I have to admit that this is, next to his 1979 pop/rock opus, "The Wall," one of his best! It is also the most beautiful Pink Floyd album ever. This is also, without a doubt, THE most political pop/rock album of all time. Does anyone else think that?

    Superb. In many ways The Final Cut is my favourite Pink Floyd album - possibly album full stop. Having grown up under Thatcher's war-mongering this was a breath of fresh air. I'll always remember the faces at the disco at the CASA Club in Dagenham when my dad (who was DJing) put Not Now John on the decks. First time I've seen the video though. Thanks!!

    Thanks for posting. Two of my favorite songs from this album, including two of my favorite guitar solos as well...interesting times in Britain during this album's making and release. The Faulkland's war and of course major economic restructuring under Maggie Thatcher. Pink Floyd still impress me all these years later.

    The first time I watched this, I imagined that this all took place after Pinky grew up and the school teacher found a new career in psychiatry. The school teacher divorced his domineering wife and is a much happier man, but must now confront the young man who he helped develop into a monster in his own right.

      I thought this would be after In The Flesh in the album because of mentioning the show and competing with the Japanese, who were part of the Axis powers in WWII with Germany, home to Adolf Hitler, who Pink emulates in his rock show.

    Here's the thing on the Final Cut, it isn't a bad album, it just isn't truly Pink Floyd. No Rick Wright makes a huge difference. I'd call it a solid Roger Waters album w/ help from Nick Mason & David Gilmour, maybe Roger's best but it's not pure Floyd. It's on par w/ Momentary Lapse of Reason & Division Bell w/ a slight edge going to Division Bell in my opinion if we're talking about a Pink Floyd trio album of any kind & not the full band. Not Now John for sure is the best song on the album.

    Most of the video sequences are straightforward enough, but I really have no idea what's going on in "Not Now John"!
    Funny thing about that song: It never occurred to me for the *longest time* that Gilmour was singing most of the verses! It's perfectly obvious, but I just didn't hear it.

    I wish this "obscured version" of Not Now John and the extended version of Hero's Return would be included as bonus tracks on some future release of The Final Cut. I still have a vinyl 45 copy of these two songs but the quality is poor now. They included When the Tigers Broke Free so why not these two "lost" items? I think the full length version of Hero's Retun is much better. It took a few listenings for me to appreciate the album. After The Wall it was a bit subdued, but by no means a lesser album.

  • @str.77
    @str.77 10 років тому +1

    "Not Now John" is actually a decent song, though buried in a crappy Roger Waters solo album, but "Memorial Home" ... apparently the Pink from "In The Flesh (2) - Run Like Hell - Waiting For The Worms" made it to 1983...

    • @Nilan88
      @Nilan88 10 років тому +1

      Not a fan of "Memorial Home" -- but "The Gunner's Dream" was a decent song as well.
      If there'd been more time put into the album and re-tooling the concepts, it could probably have been an incredible piece of work.
