Moose antlers are incredible looking. There is something inherently creepy, about a moose slowly walking towards you. Their racks just slowly tilting from side to side. The moose looking right at you getting closer & closer.
It is indeed creepy and intimidating and scary when they show you their evil eye look. But they're usually (ahem...mostly) directing that attitude toward another bull. Fun moments for sure! Thanks for commenting.
Thank you for this video. I learned so much watching these altercations. It's crazy watching them walk waving their antlers back and forth showing off. They remind me of sumo wrestlers.
A lot of martial arts styles and concepts where inspired by observing animals, Roy Jones jr the legendary boxer says he learned a lot from watching the male roosters battle on his farm as a kid
Good observations. For sure they don't want to use any more energy than they must. And they use the uphill advantage a lot too. Thanks for watching/commenting.
It’s funny seeing the cow in the back ground thinking “ ok who’s going to win me over “. The bulls have such intensity in their eyes , scary . Great videoing !! 👍👍😊
Thanks Sue, filming fights is so difficult. We never know when they're going to happen, and safety is key. Sometimes we just can't get there and be safe. But yes, the bulls' eyes? VERY intimidating!
@Toby Lam At the same time, they can totally shut out anything going on around them while fighting, they will plow into vehicles, buildings, people on bikes (if they're unfortunate enough to be there)...but they are sure alert for bears and wolves, so true.
It's always enjoyable to watch these videos. We all just hope with vaded breath that these strong animals don't hurt themselves. Sometimes you can encounter moose in the thick brush, or on an open field fighting. When a bull starts to have a temper, he awaits the competition: another bull to come into the area looking for the same reason to win a potential battle. When two bulls start getting agitated with each other, then they get engaged into a battle that can last for hours, and that battle becomes more forceful. There must be some cows in the area that they are seeking. This is pretty much the evolution of these animals year after year as they fight for dominance. Sometimes cows turn to each other, and fight with their hooves, to get priority to mate with the victor. This can be a rare ordeal. Any considerable cow moose that can be very feisty, would take in the obvious retreat to be considered a winning bull's "first priority" cow. When the mating scene takes place, the bull may allow other cows to proceed into his area as well. Thanks again for all these wonderful videos!!
Thanks Dan! What we've observed is that the bulls fight when the cows are around. No doubt they will get into it without a cow, those are usually lesser dominant bulls, kids who don't know what to do with all that pent up hormonally charged energy. The older bulls tend to conserve their energy for fighting when it counts; over mating rights to the cows. What we find so interesting is that the cows themselves, not quite ready for the bulls, will fight each other over the bull's rut pits, actually shoving him out of the way before he's done making it to his liking. The boss cow will no doubt be first to claim the bull once she's in estrus a couple days later. Fascinating stuff, all of it. The bulls welcome as many cows as will come to his pit/area. They can mate up to 25 cows in the short rut season (!!!). Cows generally mate with one bull but have been known to play the available field...as it were. Thanks for being here with us, it's great fun!
You're so right. They hang around as buddies together until the gloves, or...velvet in this case, comes off. Then they will spar. After that when the girls come to town? It's not practice any more! It's Sally, bar the door! Thanks for watching!
Nah, we're safe where we are. We always have trees nearby for cover. But we are careful and are constantly reading their body language. Thanks for watching.
They fight for the same reason any male of any species does; for the right to mate with the females who are ready. (Basically like guys fighting over a girl.) It's all about hereditary strength/genetic survival.
1:10 Moose 1: you really want to do this? Moose 2: HECK YEAH I DO! LETS GO ME AND YOU! Moose 1: okay….but I gotta warn you…I’m stronger than you 1:22 Moose 2: WHAT DID YOU SAY TO ME?!?! Are you sure this is a moose fight and not a photo op? Their attitudes is like... come on... let's get this done and over with, so they can get their pictures!
Ha! I know, right? At first it starts out with a sparring match, not a fight, just practice. Then when it does go into the fights you'll see that they take their time before committing to do battle. Injuries are common and nobody wants to be shut out of the mating game due to an injury. Then we get on to the photo shoots. (After makeup and hair fluff them back up, after their breaks... All according to Screen Actor's Guild union, of course.) (:>) Thanks for watching/commenting.
Depends, it's either me (Libby) or Rick. We are Team MooseMan. We work together from different angles. From a distance with long lens reach. With a tree or several nearby just in case. Thanks for watching.
Just curious what exactly are they trying to do? I'm not sure if they're trying to impale each other or rip off the other's antlers, or are they just trying to tire each other out. I doubt they're trying to impale each other or they're just incredibly bad at it.
The first segment is a couple of bull sparring, that's just practice for a fight. But later there are a couple of fights. They don't last very long as a rule. And the point of the fighting is for one bull to back off/run away. They rarely fight to the point of serious injury. It's all about winning the girls, after all. Antlers don't come off easily during a fight, they'll break tines, we've seen that often, and only one bull we know of lost his entire antler (the bull here called Mismatch, you can find a few videos with him in it here). Mostly they just make a point "I'm bigger and stronger, now beat it!" type thing. Thanks for asking.
If you're talking about that slow motion head wag thing? that's to intimidate, as well as give time to assess the other bull's strength and his weapons. It's weird how at the last second one will just peel off to avoid the fight.
Not at all. And I used to think that's a cruel trick of nature until I realize what their habitat is. A tail wouldn't last long. Still, it's weird, isn't it?
Yes, but when they fight, they seem to zone in on their opponent. We shoot telephotos and crop in during production too so we are not as close as it looks, not at all
