      I’d say jaguars are the ultimate cat since they can hunt on trees, land and water. They are stronger than leopards, have a stronger bite force, more muscle, more abilities and can climb just as well. And they also have no competition in their territory and can live in basically all regions

    • @POGRS
      @POGRS 5 місяців тому +1

      @@rexpowercolt8216 yeah but they face too much competition from stronger predators in their region to actually be an apex predator, whereas jaguars are the apex. So, jaguars would thrive in their regions much more than leopards, and they also have the same skillset as leopards, with extra abilities such as heightened sense of sight and stronger bite force, making them the strongest pound for pound cat. Thus, although leopards are one of the top tier cats, jaguars would be the most dominant cats simply because they are leopards with heightened abilities and less harsh environments

      As I understand it, leopards are tolerated because even though they kill livestock, they also kill feral dogs. Rabies spread by these dogs is a big problem in India, and tens of thousands of people, mostly children, die horrifically from it annually. More direct methods of controlling the dogs aren't possible for political and social reasons.

    The leopard's adaptability, variations of skill and creativity, is what really draws me to be most interested in them. As a kid I loved cheetahs because I wanted to be the fasted kid on the playground. But then I learned about their different difficulties they delt with and then I learned about all the creative ways that leopards came up with dealing with environmental issues and I was like, okay leopard's are my favorite cat! 👍🏻

    Amazing documentary, would just like to point out few things
    The average weights taken for Sri Lankan leopards were taken in 1930 from just 7 males which would not be enough. Also there is the fact that predator size correlates with prey size and it has been seen that all over the world leopard sizes increase as more protection is given to there prey who were prior hunted by humans thus forcing prey to become smaller and now returning to original larger sizes. Also as the largest leopards were hunted in the past there genes may be diluted but with more protection we are seeing the arrival of larger leopards who are returning to there true natural sizes. Proof for this is how the average weight in 1910 in Africa for a leopard was given at 50kg but now it's over 70kg, a significant increase in size. Sadly in Sri Lanka we only have that one study done a century ago which is too outdated.
    The only other 2 leopards recently measured were the black panther at 72kg and a leopard in Gal Oya at 80kg, it seems the average sizes have increased.
    Horton plains, they seem to exceed the ones in Yala in size as they have to hunt 280kg Horton plains Sambhar rather than 75kg deer in Yala and cold mountains need more tough, muscular bodies than lowland flat environments. Also leopard prey biomass which is already very high in yala at 7,000kg is dwarfed by Horton plains which has a denisty of 178 samaber for a km2 on the plains which alone amounts to 30,000kg+ not including other prey animals. This prey denisty is akin to what lions feed on in Masai Mara. Such high prey denisty seems to lead to bigger animals due to better feeding as in the case of Okavanga Delta lions and Kazaringa tigers, both apex predators of there domain growing considerably larger in these subpopulation than seen in other areas. We may truly have the larger leopards who can beat the Giant Perisan leopard and African ones, specifically the huge African Congolese leopards.
    Could you please do a documentary on highland leopards of Horton Plains

      @@tariqmohamed oh wow that's a very large leopard. Normally the problem with unofficial weight records is if there done by hunters they tend to highly exaggerate the animals size to boast there skill and daring in hunting such a monster animal. That is why the historical weights of 300kg + tigers in Siberia are hard to authenticated because most if not all were taken by hunters. But if done by DWC a scientific backed department then there is less reason to believe in exaggeration. If you have any links or documents on this specific leopard could you please share it, I would love to learn more about this individual incident 😁

    I wonder if the leopards once found in Southern Europe (as recently as Roman times) were of the Turkish subspecies or their own extinct subspecies. It's also strange that there aren't leopards on Sumatra, since Javan Leopards presumedly reached Java through Sumatra.

    • @matthewzito6130
      @matthewzito6130 2 роки тому +2

      PS) I suspect African Leopards prefer medium sized prey like Impala and Warthogs because they're small enough to haul up into a tree, while larger prey items are very often lost to Lions and Spotted Hyenas (which may also attack the Leopard).

      Perhaps sumatra is not their main route to come in java, well some theory says that there was once a big island called "sunda land" before the sea start raising and all those islands start splitting

    Indian Leopard population would officially show 15,000-16,000.
    But in real it's Atleast Double in numbers ~35,000.
    15,000 number comes from India's "Tiger Census" which is limited to just 53 tiger reserves/ total 553+ reserves (Total area of Tiger reserve is just 70,000 sq km or 2.21% of India). So during Tiger Census if they spot Leopard, they count it.
    But they don't count Leopard out of Tiger Reserves i.e., all the Sancturies & National parks of India.
    & Leopard also share jungle with Asiatic Lions, bears, wolves.

    Great video. But, u forgot to mention north chinese leopards. Even though they are genetically very close to amur leopards, their population number is close to 1500. They are found in northern part of tibet and central part of china. They even coexist with snow leopards. They probably weigh more than amur leopards due to the lack of competition from tiger.

    • @AegleCreations
      @AegleCreations  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the info. I was debating whether to include the North Chinese Leopard, but the number of subspecies were dwindled down to 8 as suggested in the video. As for the number of leopard subspecies, it's always a debatable point... but the North Chinese Leopard was included in previous classifications.
