  • HMMWV Hood Repair And Body Work: How to fix hood cracks
In this video we will be fixing the cracks in the hood of my Humvee. This is a very common problem with these Humvees and is very easy to fix with limited knowledge and tools, Anyone can do this job on their own with a little bit of patience.

Your turning into a good body man, I like the fast forward parts of the sanding, goes to show just how much effort goes into a quality job. Thanks!

a good body man will tell you to use "SMC fiberglass resin" and the hardener that usually comes with it. different then regular fiberglass resin. the hood is SMC fiberglass and thats why the correct way is to use SMC resin. EVERCOAT is the brand. prob want find it locally. i had to buy it on ebay. its about 45$ for a quart if i remember correctly. Sure Dakotas way works as well. i did use DAKOTAs method for cutting out and tapering the crack. i just filled the crack more with fiber mat and resin from the top side for a couple layers. ( small piece in the crack, bigger, then bigger then bigger, all over lappingm for about 3 layers. love Dakotas videos and hope this also helps someone out there

Good job Dakota. Back in my Subaru days I used to work with a lot of composites and really liked the fiberglass impregnated bondo. I think the poly stuff you used is similar.
Your flamingo friend wanted to help you while you were working on the hood LOL

Great video series. Have you ever done a video showing from the purchase side. So how you pick the Humvee then transport it and get it titled?

Look up fiberglass peanut butter, it’s pretty much resin and chop strand works amazing for filling and it’s ten times stronger then bondo and will last. Check out total boat their fiberglass etc is dirt cheap and the best out there when it comes to resins n fiberglass.

Hey Dakota I really enjoy watching all of the videos! you really go through everything on these HMMWV's, I also really like that crimping machine that you have for making the A/C lines, where do I get one of these? Also could I text you about some Doors? Thank you, Brett Collins

Poor choice of materials, but depending on your desired results and longevity, it'll do. Matt has no strength, I would have used a biaxial cloth, and 1 layer of thin matt if you were worried about print through but it was being finished with filler anyway. Epoxy as well, but at least cloth for strength. On a repair this small, depending on flex of the hood it might not matter, but I'd hope that anyone seeing this doesn't use the same technique on a larger area.

Rick Worthington I appreciate your help! I will also be adding the fiberglass hood reinforcement panels to the back of the hood in these exact spots. Next time I will also use the cloth for added strength. I would definitely use the cloth for larger areas in the future.

Great video! Why would you skip the mat reinforcement on the corner, the most likely place to take a hit again in the future. Seems like it could use more reinforcement not less?

    • @DakotaWoodHD

Bob Shupe Thanks buddy! That corner area is already very thick, even if I did add some fiberglass to that area, it would still crack again in the event of an impact.

I think it would have been a bit easier if you took the hood off, but that's me thinking about how I would have done it.

You also want to be wearing PPE for that military CARC paint, you don’t want to expose yourself to that.
