    • @OLOH

      We're quite frustrated by the poor seamanship and lack of concern for safety we see in those situations. There's just a limit as to what we can do and yelling at someone on the radio seems to only make them defiant. We will call them out at times, however, and warn boats up ahead of what's coming.
      For some reason, some boaters see a boat our size and think their close range pass and wake won't affect us. We can often handle it reasonably well and if we speed up our stabilizers certainly help, but bigger boats are hardly immune from the wakes of the oblivious.

    Yes as I sit here working away this gives me something to strive for. The relaxed nature you show also shows the amount of skill and prep you do to make it safe. I have looked at so many boats and this is the size and style of boating I want to do in a few years.

    I have just started watching your videos and they bring back many fond memories of running my 40 ft Hatteras Sport Fish, Flash from Sandusky Ohio to Mobile Al. The daily celebratory cocktail at the end of each day was a tradition for Captain and Crew on our journey as well. Being cheap I ran hull speed most of the trip and kept my wake down to a minimum. The Flash is now gone and has been replaced with a 45 ft Hatteras I keep in Ensenada Mexico. Very little cruising but lots of fishing.
    Thanks for sharing.

      Hey Captain Mike - thanks for your note and we're so glad we could help you reminisce. Lake Erie to Mobile is an exciting and challenging trip and it must have been an epic adventure. Glad to know you're still on a Hatt, one of our favorite makes and prior to finding our current OLOH we were on the hunt for one ourselves. Cheers!

    I’ve enjoyed your videos so much. Many years ago I came up from Florida to cape cod with a then boyfriend. Thankfully he was a seasoned captain. We anchored in the entrance to the Albamarle Sound off the NC coast. The weather got bad so we decided to move north quickly. VERY BAD NIGHT ! we were sort of staying close to a boat like ours and we could see the entire bottom of his boat which we were also doing! It was a long and scary night! Mothers Day no less! How was your crossing of this area? Thanks for sharing!

    OLOH,
    I am just getting into following you and Jasper, (love dogs), I would like to know the information of your boat, such as year, model, length, draft, bridge clearance. I am working on my due diligence as to the great loop and am looking for the right boat for me.
    Randy

    • @OLOH
      @OLOH  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Randy! Lots of info on OLOH at myoloh.com/the-boat but as to your specific questions... OLOH is a 2004 60' Jefferson Marquessa Motor Yacht. We draw right around 5' and have an air draft of 24' with our antennas down (we lower them all the time for bridges). We also have a folding tower holding the mast light and radar and while we've never measured it, we figure lowering it it would reduce the air draft by another 3' or so *if* we were to remove our satellite domes. So it would be super-close for the Loop. If you've got more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

    When you were in the lock you refer to the diesel exhaust fumes? I thought main shut down was required while in the lock if possible or am I wrong. Hope you will set me straight so if in the future I find myself in similar situation I can conduct myself correctly. Thank you in advance!😊

    • @OLOH
      @OLOH  3 роки тому +1

      Great question. At the Great Bridge Lock which is shown in this video, mariners are not required to shut down their main engines and we have never noticed that anybody does. There is only around a two foot drop here and you are not deep within a chamber as you can be in other locks which would make exhaust untenable. When we cross Lake Okeechobee, the locks on that waterway require you to shut down your mains.
      We have generally found that lock tenders don't take it for granted that everyone in the lock is experienced and will let you know what the requirements are. Or you can certainly ask. Cheers!

    • @OLOH
      @OLOH  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Ed. As we mentioned, we absolutely recognize that not all sport fish owners/captains are like that. But we and other cruisers have long observed that a disproportionate number of SFs seem to care little about others on the water. We always appreciate conscientious boaters, whatever the vessel.

  • @goodbonezz1289

    Honest question..seeing as you’re a displacement hull and cruise at lower speeds..what is the gripe about being passed by faster cruising vessels? I don’t think you’re expecting a 22kt cruiser/sport fisher to just stay aft of you..so, what am I missing?
    I’m a boater as well and looking for some insight. Thanks.
    Like your videos btw.

    • @OLOH
      @OLOH  3 роки тому +9

      That is a great question. To be clear, we have no issue with being properly passed and it happens frequently. Our gripe is with unsafe, discourteous operation. In the case of what you hear us complaining about in this video, this boat was not at a distance where he could properly pass us at his speed. Given his proximity and speed it was not possible for us to avoid being rocked by his massive wake. And the smaller boats he passed behind and in front of us were seriously tossed around. Inconsiderate and unsafe.
      Common practice and courtesy in the more narrow areas of the Intracoastal Waterway is to use the VHF to make passing arrangements with vessels you wish to overtake (or know and use the proper "whistle"). Correctly done, this captain would have hailed us, his being the give way and ours being the stand on vessel with the right of way. Typically, we would have slowed our speed significantly so he could pass us without throwing an impactful wake. If done properly the whole arrangement can be accomplished relatively quickly and painlessly and certainly more safely than this captain's approach. Fortunately, the proper way is the practice of most boaters we encounter on the ICW but on most days there will be at least a couple who either don't get it or don't care. And this guy, like someone on the road who dangerously passes you only to get to the red light first, unsafely passed a bunch of boats only to get to the closed lock to have to sit and wait.
      OLOH throws a fairly sizable wake at ten knots and a much bigger one at eighteen knots. We pass boats in narrow waterways all the time, but only after following protocol. You are responsible for your wake. And people and boats and things on boats can get hurt when captains are irresponsible. We choose to do the right thing.
      Thanks for watching and for the question - we hope that provides a bit of insight.
