- M/Y OLOH departs Hampstead, North Carolina, bound for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with an overnight stop in Southport. Part 5 of our Southbound journey from New York includes transiting the notoriously problematic Lockwoods Folly, a stay at the wonderful Southport Marina, a sad crew goodbye and venturing through the infamous Rock Pile en route to a stormy night in North Myrtle beach at Barefoot Marina.

One of my favorite memories on a boat was when my uncle drove my brother and I up to the lake and we ended up not being able to go out because it was storming. However, we came prepared with a bunch of James bond movies. So we just watched movies all day and snooped around the boat. I just thought everything was so cool because I'd never been on a boat with cabins and heads before. 😅

Loved seeing the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge and Marina. Fond memories of growing up at that marina. Of course it has changed immensely since we were there.

That's awesome. We started on a 21' Sea Ray. Then a 26 Sundancer. Then a 37. And it keeps on going. Although we're very happy where we've landed (for now) 😎

Great job of producing and knowing what to video. It never gets boring, seeing OLOH travel. I especially love seeing you travel the ICW. Although, it does get a little depressing seeing all the boats abandoned along the shore line. I am guessing hurricanes and/or nor' easters? BTW, Pops is looking good, healthy and what a great toast. The abandoned boats are always a tough sight, but many that we see have been there for a long time at this point - still many from Hurricane Matthew in the Carolinas - and it surprises us when we pass by a boat a year or two after seeing it for the first time and it's still there. Bad Ass! Wow many hours in production and it shows. So smooth and fluent every shot to the next. Great touching story/toast from the Cap’s dad. Totally enjoyed every second. PLUS The content is on point, dig the docking and all the day to day shots. May think about a mounted time Lapps for some docking footage? But all in all the video was great! XO T-n-T
Thanks Tom! So glad you enjoyed it. We did show a bit of the fixed-mounted dockage time-lapse, as you saw... but there just wasn't much to see at these particular quick in-and-out marinas. Always curious if the non-boaters enjoy watching prolonged docking footage (certainly not as much as boaters!).

Great series. My wife and I are watching Part after Part and enjoying every mile along the route as well as your marina visits. Might we ask [1] how many days, weeks, or months in advance do you call marinas to reserve a slip on the ICW? [2] on average once under way what speed do you travel at and what gallons per hour are you using? Many Thanks! Safe Travels!

Reservations on the ICW during the migration can be tricky, particularly lately with more boats out there and things booking up more than in the past. While it is difficult for us to make reservations too far out as we need to be fluid for weather and like to be relaxed about our planning, there are a few that we may make weeks in advance knowing certain marinas that may book up. Then we attempt to adjust those as needed along the way. While some cruisers keep it loose and go for same day reservations, that is a rarity for us and space is more limited in may places at our LOA. We always shove-off knowing we are confirmed for where we are tying up later that day. For most of our one-night stops, we try to make those reservations at least a few days out. If we're out and decide we'd like to keep going before arriving at our intended destination, we'll call ahead to where we'd like to stay and if they can take us, great. If not, we land at our original spot. We are diligent about canceling or adjusting reservations as soon as we know we won't be showing up somewhere and wish everyone else would be too. It makes a huge difference for cruisers and marinas. Unfortunately, some marinas have taken on unfortunate refund policies because of the amount of no-shows (and, sadly, some marinas are just greedy).
Our preferred cruising speed is ten knots where we burn an average of ten to twelve gallons per hour.

Thank you! Your answers from personal experience are extremely helpful. We have been living a land-based, travel trailer existence with similar concerns regarding reservations at campgrounds as we tour the country when not at home. We are now looking to the ocean as our next adventure, and the ICW, Hudson River, and Erie Canal system look like a terrific first stage in our transition. We look forward to our continued viewing of your ongoing adventures on OLOH. They have opened our eyes and our imaginations as to what we can expect on the water. Safe Travels!

How far can you go on a tank of fuel and how many gallons does she hold ? Just your normal cruise speed I know it sucks fuel when hammered down
OLOH holds 700 gallons of diesel. At our preferred cruise speed of ten knots we can travel up to around 630 nautical miles while maintaining a ten percent reserve, but we never really stretch it that far and tend to keep the tanks regularly topped off.
