I must have seen this 100 times, that part near the end when the chorus kicks in and Anakin screams "I hate you" still hits me like a force push to the chest. I will never get tired of watching this.
Anakin absolutely was the Chosen One. His love for his son brought him back to the light, enabling him to fulfill his destiny and defeat the Master of the Sith. Luke only became more powerful than his father because of all the injuries Anakin sustained on Mustafar. Anakin lost much of his force ability after Obi Wan maimed him. And before anyone comes at me, yes, Luke was extremely powerful. He manipulated a black hole. Anakin never did anything close to that.
I think in canon, in terms of raw potential, Anakin was a hair above Luke. Just a hair. But sufficient enough that due to Anakin's fall and needing the suit and never truly being taught by Sidious, Luke at his prime became measurably stronger than Vader was. Not to mention that there were vast differences in how Vader and Luke used the Force. A metaphor I've heard used was that Vader used the Force like a hammer to bust through defenses and crush his enemies. Luke used the Force like a surgical knife. Vastly more precise and tactical application of his somewhat weaker potential to give off the appearance of being stronger. At the end of the day, your midichlorian count/Force potential means jack shit. It's how well you are able to utilize your power to do what needs to be done that matters. Fun fact: during the filming of a new hope the lightsabers used were very sensitive and if they clashed too hard they would shatter all over the set.
That's because the hilts contained motors to make the blades spin. The original idea was to make the props shine brightly by coating them with reflective material. During post production Lucas decided he wanted the blades to be different colours, so he covered them up in the edit with animated lasers.
