    A lot of fans today forget or are not aware that sabers were meant to be space broad swords and to be held with two hands. It later evolved to what we have today. I do enjoy the original but I also enjoy this and honestly would have been happy with both. I do think Alec’s spin in the original just looks goofy and here it’s been “rectified” lol but overall I just love seeing how the fans interpret these scenes and try to make them their own.

      Starwars was also largely inspired by samurai sword styles back then.
      Although it's likely the biggest reason the original fight scene wasn't more intense was because the props used for the sabers effects back then were actually very fragile and expensive. They couldn't really bash them together without them breaking.

    • @GodOfWar221
      @GodOfWar221 4 роки тому +3

      I'd say more of a "Hand and a half" seeing as they are often seen being wielded with both one, and two hands. And maybe a hint of Katana thrown in there too. That being said, it's always cool to remember all the work that went into Star Wars. .

    There is logic to how the fight was originally, but it was mostly just that there were limitations, and the idea was new. This update helps A New Hope a lot imo, and helps to connect it to the prequels with the type of light-saber battle and of course those little memory clips. It even is a good connector from Rogue One, starting similar to that corridor scene but then ramping it up both in the type of opponent and in the scale of the confrontation.

  • @sultanofsauce9816

    I will agree that Anakin’s SABER fighting skills were lessened as a result of losing his limbs, but his absolute rage combined with his ability to enhance his movements with the force, even Kenobi feared Vader. He knew that the next time he faced him, after realizing he’s still alive? He would not survive.

    • @lukeharris1473
      @lukeharris1473 9 місяців тому

      Well his style changed for the better because of it actually. He relied heavily on his agility, endurance, as force abilities as he dueled as a Jedi, but as Vader, his dueling skills are actually better because he can’t rely on these things. As a pure duelist there are few characters in the whole of the series that could take Vader. He’s just so aggressive and his strikes are powerful as fuck.

  • @dndamn

    The biggest issues was that David Prowes lied about his stage combat experience which is why they brought in Bob Anderson for Empire and Jedi. Alec was actually capable of much more than we ever see in ANH.

    • @NeoCreo1

      The other big problem was that the prop department fucked up and didn’t have the reinforced combat lightsabers ready for the fight, so they had to make do with the older versions, which were fragile glass tubes that couldn’t be used with much force.

    Kyle - it's Qui-Gon Jinn's Funeral theme, not Padmé. The choral part is somewhat a reprise in her theme but the earlier eery instrumental & humming part is the one by Lucas King (composer with his own YT-channel with same name). A fitting choice considering Obi-Wan going the same route as the old Jedi master final struggle & his padawan witnessing his death, albeit Obi-Wan did it willingly.

    Love the reaction, but you are wrong about the intensity of the fight. Personally, I think showing that pure rage of Vader is absolutely perfect. I not saying you’re wrong for liking the original better at all, I respect that but this 100% illustrates the emotion behind this fight. Granted it’s debatable Obi-Wan should be able to move like that, whether the force was a big factor (aka how Yoda is able to like he does when he fights) or that he knew he would die. Either way I don’t think the original fight did Vader’s rage justice. Just my thoughts, love the content my man and keep it up!

    What I really like about this is it wasn't what most sword fights are in movies - 2 Bobby Boucher's yelling "Slap hands! Slap Hands!" Every swing was a deadly strike going for the kill, not just the clashing of sabers for effect.

    I prefer this scene to the original not because its flashier but because it has the proper sense of history between these two. Obi wan literally turned anakin into a torso, and then watched him burn alive. Vader was fighting in this like he really lived those moments, you could feel the violence behind his attacks, plus they added a very anakin feeling to some of his moves. This scene is canon to me for this reason. Just brought it all home and wrapped up obi wans character arc in a way that just wasnt possible in the 70’s.

      Yeah. But that was because Anakin was an incredibly powerfull Jedi. Even at 50% of his original power he was still way stronger than most other jedi, apart from the super masters like Yoda and Mace Windu of course. It was made pretty clear several times in books and stuff that Palpatine intentionally made his suit painfull and cumbersome to make sure that Vader would never be able to overthrow him.

      I can imagine the theater in 1977 because I was there. Nobody thought the original fight was somehow lacking. On the other hand, when we all got to see the prequels years later there were lots of confused and disappointed people. I'll take the original trilogy (and sequel trilogy) light saber duels over prequel style any fucking day. If you want to know what a light saber duel is supposed to look like (in a more modern style,) then Obi-Wan vs. Maul in "SW:Rebels" is perfect.

  • @shawnheidingsfelder8179

    I liked how they did the fight choreography, especially for Obi-Wan. He fought here like an old man fighting a younger, stronger, more adept fighter would, barely deflecting blows, but still showing flashes of the years of experience he has. I like to think that if Lucas had today's technology back then, this is the kind of fight he would have put in, not the flippy stuff that came in later movies. An old man's last stand against his protege.

      It’s great as a little standalone scene but if you inserted it into the full cut you’d notice it’s really kinda bloated.
      (Good) choreography tells a story without milking the moment. The purpose of the scene wasn’t to show off how cool these dudes are with their sweet moves.
      Vader sees someone he previously thought was dead for 19 years and just ... charges in?
      I prefer my characters to do things that make sense.
      Cool scene, really impressive tech. In no way is it superior to the original.

    • @Bad_Wolf_Media
      @Bad_Wolf_Media 5 років тому +3

      @@KyleKatarnChannel For better or worse is an argument that will rage for a long, long time, but this does tie in better with the Vader they gave us at the end of ROGUE ONE. For two scenes that take place so close together time-wise (end of R1 and this original scene), Vader is truly a different character.
      This is completely the fault of going for the "whiz-bang" factor in ROGUE ONE rather than servicing the story and continuity. The best scene action-wise in that film is the worst scene story-wise. But it's out there now, and I doubt Disney/LFL will be looking to scale it back in a R1:SE any time soon.

    • @EskChan19
      @EskChan19 4 роки тому +1

      @@Bad_Wolf_Media Honestly, i feel like A New Hope was the one who was the one error in continuity. Because Vader has always been portrayed like this in any medium other than the original trilogy. Wether it's Legends or Canon, he has always had this raw, super-powerfull fighting style in books, shows, games, he killed Jedi all over the galaxy and pretty much always won. It was A New Hope that really undersold him because they simply didn't have the technology to do better yet.

    • @Bad_Wolf_Media
      @Bad_Wolf_Media 4 роки тому

      @@EskChan19 The problem there is "A New Hope" was originally called "Star Wars," and everything - EVERYTHING! - that's come after it should have been built on that. It was first, it set the rules. It can't be "wrong" when there was nothing else to compare it to.
      Every book, every comic, every cartoon, every TV show, every other movie, they all owe their very existence to "A New Hope." So they can't be right and the source material be wrong. They should have made the follow-on material to match what came before.

    I know you're a purist when it comes to Star Wars, and I appreciate that. But, you have to admit what was awesome about this recreation was how it showed Vader's rage. The way he was striking and how aggressive he was always how I thought Vader would be confronting Obiwan for the first time since Mustafar. Also this would be Vader at a point where he's much more powerful in the Dark side, and canon tells us that he used his Dark side power to augment what he lost with his cybernetics

  • @radioflyer68911

    Whenever I watch EP IV I'll have to stop it and watch this, then proceed after the scene on the video. Aside from Princess Leia's "You came in that?" Line being omitted. This is great. It's not the same thing as George Lucas's Greedo shot first, or the other silly jawas falling off a dinosaur, Palpatine wailing as he falls, or bad Jabba the Hut rendering with Han stepping on the tail sort of additions. This is actually an improvement to a poorly executed lightsaber fight in the original. Which was made even worse by the skill displayed by the Jedi in the prequels. Yoda wasn't a spring chicken in the prequels either. Sure Alec Guinness and whoever donned the Vader suit(possibly) was stage trained Shakespearian, but the standard while certainly great for a stage when the audience has to watch through binoculars wouldn't hold up on film.

    It wasn't intent that made original Episode IV "vanilla", it was all sorts of actual limitations: the original lightsaber props were fragile, Alec Guinness was a frail old man, David Prowse could barely see and like Guinness, wasn't a trained stage fighter, Lucas couldn't afford a fight coreographer, so they kept it WAY simple, and they just didn't have the budget to pay for an extended fight, including the lightsaber visuals. It's fine to be loyal, but this isn't a case of "Han shot first", this reimagining is superior, physically and dramatically.
    The prequels are valid, and they showed how the Force enables manuevers beyond pure physicality, Yoda at 800 years old holding his own against Palpatine and Palpatine himself killing three Jedis in less than two seconds. Vader, by IV, has abandoned (for damn good reasons) his wild acrobatics, the corridors don't allow for Jedi leaps, but otherwise, it's two master wizards going balls to the walls...with Obi-wan realizing he'll "win" as long as Luke gets away.

    My issue is I know Obi-wan was old but I feel they didn't really do his fighting style justice he was the master of form 3 soresu which he combines with form 4 Ataru. He scared Dooku to the point that Dooku was scared to see what he was capable of as well as he was the only Jedi to be able to fight grevious because of his trust and tranquil use of the force by letting it literally possess him and he became just a shell for the force. He was also only like 57 so he wouldn't have been a frail old man especially by Jedi standards. They definitely did justice for Vadar thought none stop assault utilizing his robotics and force enhancements to aggressively attack his opponent 10/10 🤷🏻‍♂️ eh I am just Obi-wan fanboy lol

      What do you mean "especially for Jedi Standards"? There's no Jedi standards. Being a jedi doesn't make you live longer. The only supremely old jedi we knew was Yoda and that only because his race lives super long.

      @@EskChan19 Randy19 Jedi standards as in a Jedi who is 57 years or even 60 would not be on the same standards of strength and abilities by someone who is not a Jedi or a force user they would be above them.
      As for the Yoda what are you talking about?
      I said nothing about Yoda this entire video has nothing to do with Yoda do yourself a favor and read my comment in full before jumping the gun.
      To help your perspective of things Obi-wan was 57 years old roughly in his rematch with Vadar and his master Qui-gon was just over 60 when they fought maul as you can see Jedi are not so easily weak because they have aged.

    I know I am 2 years late but whatever
    I agree with you that this is not suppouse to be a flashy fights with blackflips but I disagree with your reasons. The Robots cant do shit is really dump. In this movie they need to show the power of Vader and how strong is he (because make no mistake he is Rouge one or the end of Fallen Order). The real reason (It think) that that fight is perfect is that its the start its the start of all the big ass amazing lightsaber fights we all love. We dont need to remake we just need to pay respect (by pushing F :D) for the fight wich was the source for the BEST ACTION SEQUENCES IN CINEMA HOSTORY.

    You have to admit Kyle, there was always one little point that was somewhat annoying about the original fight and that was that little pirouette that Kenobi did at some point, it servec absolutely no purpose. At least in this version it looked like he got twisted around by Vader. Much more convincing to me.

    I'm sorry its no way you liked that original battle. The only reason the first fight wasn't flashy was because of the technology and the story wasn't about the fight it was about obi becoming a force ghost and helping luke. Had nothing about them being old. Did you see yoga fighting at 800 years ago

    I wasn't a fan of the original fight. There's not enough raw emotion in it. From Anakin especially, this fight has a lot of emotions (particularly hatred, of course) tied up in it. The original fight heavily failed to convey that, mainly as an artifact of that time period. With the way movies were made back then, it wasn't really possible to convey strong emotions very well. But with modern technology, it's possible to finally give scenes the power to convey the underlying emotions, and their sheer strength. This fan work really shows that well. The choreography, the music, the throwback to the lines from episode three, the effects... All of it builds an intense mood, and really conveys the strength of the emotions the characters feel, and how powerful the backstory between them is regarding this particular scene. It does what the original scene absolutely failed to do. Again, it couldn't really be helped, as at the time it was made, the technology just wasn't good enough. So, for the time, it was likely very acceptable. Now, however, we can raise the bar, and do scenes like this the justice they deserve.

    The original light saber fights were character moments that were meant to express the emotion of the characters and thematic tone. The prequel generation's obsession with highly choreographed light-stick dance fighting just completely misses the point.

    My opinion the way they did it was sooo much better then the original the original was just poking some Dialogue no real emotion this added great fighting more visual pleasure more aggressiveness from Vader and also still showing how even tho old how amazing obi wan Is as a Swordsman and all in all just so much emotion like you felt every angry swing Vader Swang and obi-Wan’s pain of fighting his brother again and the I hate you part with obis u were my brother I loved you was the icing on the cake it just Tied everything in very nicely if they ever remake the original they honestly can keep everything else the same but use this for there fight just graphic it alittle better even tho this is insane already

    Sorry but The fact of the matter is the original scene was really bad...everyone says "oh its all about the emotion between the two" I understand that i really do but the prequels weren't even out so i guess i wonder how you felt before the prequels came to be and watched the Vader and obi wan scene cause to be REAL the way they awkwardly swung their sabers was NOT emotional im sorry 😂 George even stated they couldn't make hard contact cause the saber prop was fragile. I bet if they were in the prequel era making A New Hope, the scene would have been more like this reimagined scene.

      I felt the same way about the scene before the prequels came out.
      There was no frame of reference to compare it to, we were happy to get what we had.

      Also when I watched this I never expected that classic scene to be EVEN MORE emotional. It really gets you now. ANd not only because of the flashbacks. Because you really catch yourself rooting for the beloved old man, hoping he'll make it somehow, all while finding yourself in AWE at the Black Knight in his full glory or infamy... when the coup de grace comes it really gets you.

    I just made this comment earlier what they did was fantastic bravo a great achievement. But not necessary. in 1978 Star wars won the academy award for best visual effects because their effects were never seen before it was original.they used the technology of then and did the best they could. When you add special edits you take away the achievement of the men and women from back then. you make it meaningless. Big-time corporations are going to pay to be added to other classic movies. Casablanca will be in the shopping center between the Starbucks and Walmart
