Love my adv skin 5, been using it for a year or so now - Tip: if your flask starts to get empty and hard to put back if you take it out, blow air into it and it makes it easier to slide it back into the vest

Interested in this specific pack and watched a bunch of reviews - your critique was the best! Keep the content coming. Training for my first marathon in 2023 and I'll be 76 when I run. Hopefully for a sub-six hour finish with the run/walk/run strategy. Thank you.

I pretty much agree with all of this, but I got the 12 because I also like to take it hiking and it holds more things. Also easier to get to things with the zipper. I was only going to get one. Running with the 12 is fine. Just pull all of the strings to make sure everything is flush against your body.

Exactly the video I was looking for. 20 mile range is what I'm aiming for in a bag, nailed it! Super impressed with your video/content quality, you should 100% have many more subs coming soon.

I personally went with the 12 because I honestly can't even tell the extra space is there if I have it cinched down and unfilled, but I use the pack for a lot of big days in the mountains that include scrambling and high altitudes and I need the extra space for food, water, and layers (and sometimes a helmet if I'm going to be in areas with a risk of rockfall). I've never regretted getting the larger size but there's days where I've maxed it out and would've been sad to only have the 5. But the great thing is that both of them are fantastic packs and everyone's use is slightly different.

There's no way I would sacrifice the versatility of the 12 for the marginal benefit of a tiny bit less of the claimed bounciness of the 5. I don't' find the 12 bounces at all, and all the extra space is super beneficial.

Great review, seriously the best explanation of why you would need an adv skin 5 vs 12. I was confused on what to do until I saw this. Do you think it has enough space to run commute to work? I would need to fit a pair of jeans and a polo shirt. A pair of sneakers would be nice too, but I imagine that it wouldn't fit.

I have both the 5 and the 12. The 12 right now, April 2023, is only $20 more than the 5. For $20, I'd get the 12 even if you don't NEED the 12 NOW. I started with the 5 and only got the 12 in anticipate of a 100M with some potential mandatory kit for bad weather. Thing is, I just use the 12 now, even for training runs. There's really no advantage IMO to the 5 over the 12 besides price, and like I say, for $20, just get the 12.
As for bottles, my 12 came with the same soft bottom bottles. If they're not completely full, an easy way to get them in the pack is to blow air in to make them solid. They slide in super easy, you bite again to suck out the air so it doesn't slosh.
Not sure what wider bottle you're talking about. As far as I can tell they're all 42mm and interchangeable. I did trim my long stems down a bit, and I use flip top "speed fill" on my bottles with water. I use the regular tops like you have for my bottle with water/fuel/electrolyte mix.

He is possibly talking about width of bottle opening. Over the years Salomon kept changing it due to racers complaining about difficulty of filling them up at water stations as well as difficulty cleaning them properly. I have an older version that comes with very narrow opening or he means those wide, slanted bottles that they made for woman’s versions.

I have the 5 but might get the 12 too. The 5 should be more than enough for a 50k. If you have crew at aid stations then you definitely won't need anything bigger for any event. If you don't have a crew then maybe the 12 helps you carry gear for overnight if you'll be running for 15-20hrs or more. Both are excellent

I'm not looking into distances over marathondistance so the active skin 4 is enough for me. lets be real and talk about what solomon does better than the rest, its the fit, my vest never jiggled. i dont know if its because im not from the audhd spectrum but rhythmic is so freaking annoying for me and solomon does a good job with their running/hydration vests delivering a product thats reducing bounce and noise to a minimum

I've never worn an XL in any other garment so I'm concerned that the sizing is off and I'll end up with a lot of bouncing if I go with the XL. I'm also concerned that the L will be too small and will chafe. Do they run large or small?

Good question. I think it’s older version of 8 vs newer of 5. I love my Salomon 12 but all manufactures do not change names of newer version which drives me nuts because you basically have no way to compare unless reviewer has multiple versions and long and detailed knowledge of versions changes over the years. There are always some subtle differences which may or may not be as crucial to some. Usually it is very important to racers because it effects the weight; distribution and convenience. Currently I am on REI website and I can already see the lack of this info. I also noticed that some have soft, summer fabric and some have crinkly, water resistant fabric of the main back compartment. Other times they come with newer version of bottles and that’s where price difference.
