I really like mine. It's the only vest I use because it has the most space accessible while running (i.e., without having to take it off). The two side pockets below the flask pockets are prime real estate because they are very easy to access. The side zip pockets are tricky, but with practice, may be accessed on the run as well. I feel like the tiny "lapel" zip pocket keeps my car keys safe. The vest is very comfortable and feels good even if I only hook one or none of the elastic closure straps in the front. I find the huge central back pocket is nice for a bladder, or as you said big storage for more clothes, but I am unable to access it on the run. Back side pockets are where I store extra food. I can pat them to check my status, but I need to stop to access them. Yeah, its pricey, but in this case, it's the only one I use, I use it all the time, I can wash it, so ultimately it is a good value.
The shoulder mesh pockets you mentioned are to hold down the straws you can attach to your flasks to stop them bouncing around and smacking you in the face, you slide them in and out as you need them.. I have discovered this first hand 😂🙈
I just purchased this vest from REI last night. Will be putting some miles on it very soon and will report back on likes dislikes pros and cons. Thanks for the video it was well done!
the toggel were both broken on mine. i took it back to the shop and they had a bunch of the 2 hole toggles that the front straps use to replace them and they work perfect. Solomon sent the shop the parts.
awesome. i just recently picked mine up at REI store for $47.00 on sale. and its the perfect fit for my MTB ride "GOOD DIRT RIDE 2022". Held up really well and the pockets are in the right spot. No issues on my end so far. Great review and i discovered additional pockets i never knew, thanks for the review. appreciated. Happy riding and running.
I purchased the ebony colour and received it today - first thing I checked were the toggles on the back of the vest as I’ve seen on many reviews that they break easily, Salomon must have made a change to the design with the pinch toggles similar to those used on previous Salomon packs.
It’s so confusing now because they seem to resorted to the original style toggles. I have just purchased another one in clematis blue manufactured in October 2020! I guess time will tell on how durable the toggles are now. Nonetheless it’s a brilliant pack and looking forward to using it.
I had this for almost a year now, been using it for my weekly run. You were right about what this vest can carry, it is a lot. I was looking around for my small tripod everywhere not knowing it was in the side pocket the whole time! At one time I forgot to tighten the back strings, found out that the stretchy string was rubbing the loop hole until its almost cut the loop hole and the string. And you're right about the back ventilation, not so good in my area with an average 80% humidity every day. This vest is my first running vest and I'm really happy with it.
I would suggest taking a look at Evadict 15L. It has a little bit more volume while still staying around 300g which also comes with a 2L hydro bladder. It also has a backside with strechable material which gives a volume actually more than 15L
Great video, thanks! My clips broke on either side of the main pouch, happy to hear I'm not the only one that experienced that. The elastic strings on the side of the vest causes discomfort and I need to readjust them often. There seem to be a couple of extra loops that I can't figure out what they are meant for, would be great if Salomon put out a comprehensive video of all the features. I carry an additional zip lock pouch which I reuse for my empty gel packets, it prevents the trash pouch form getting sticky. I inflate my empty soft flasks which keep them firm and stop them from falling into the pockets, I find them easier to manage when inflated. Keep up the good work!
Good tip on inflating the soft flask. There's a couple loops in the back that were designed to use with the Salomon Trekking Pole Quiver. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this video I’ve got this vest and the Ultimate direction 5.0, I’ve got my first 100 mile this weekend and have been struggling with what one to wear but after watching this I’m now decided on the Salomon, love your videos, keep ‘ coming 👍🏻🇬🇧
I did test this one and the Adv Skin 5 Liter and I would recommend the 5L one. It takes the same amount but fits better even when you pack it with a few things.
I actually own both the 5 and 12 liter. I love the 5 liter but it doesnt comfortably hold the same bulk as the 12 liter for me. I use the 5 liter for shorter training runs or well supported races but I tend to grab the 12 liter for long unsupported runs. Thanks for watching!
@@LastGateFitness I think you could. I personally always at least have a singlet or something on. But the vest fits a lot like a T-Shirt and the materials are quite soft. Thanks for watching!
@@loserpro43210 the 5 is a little better because it doesn't have the additional zipper pouch on the outside. The 12 has 4 layers of material due to this.
I have the same softflasks.... gets in the pockets very easy when completely filled! If they are 1/2 filled blow air in them...they will go in the pockets very easily!!!
The bungee cord to hold the soft flask is to prevent it from falling off. This tends to happen as you flask gets empty, it is very easy to fall off. Speed flask is totally worth it, the large opening allows easy refill and adding electrolytes powder etc.
I love those little bungees. They keep the bottle from falling into the depths of the pocket. I do worry about the day they rip off though haha. thanks for watching!
Good review, thanks. I've just bought one of these (haven't used it yet) and am doing a bit more research before I decide whether or not to keep it. (I'm also weighing up whether I want M or L - I'm on the cusp between the two according to Salomon's sizing guide. The large seems more comfortable when I try it on - haven't run in it yet - but I have to cinch it slightly tigher at the front than the 8cm gap recommended by Salomon). Re the breathability and the black colour absorbing sunlight - a great tip I saw elsewhere was to freeze a soft ice pack and put that in the water reservoir pouch, so it's nice and cold against your back. Worth a try!
I've read lots of people complaining about that clip part breaking, it seems like its almost always on the black versions of the vest. i'm guessing something went wrong when the produced that batch of black plastic. i have the blue one and have had zero issues. i also wish there was a bit of documentation explaining the features, there are clips inside the main pack compartment that i just cannot figure out the purpose of.
Interesting about the color being the issue. Hmmm! I think those little red clips inside are for an additional baffle or internal organizer that Salomon sells.
This video is 1.5 years old but still a great review! I use the ADV Skin 12 and love it! Owned it for at least 1 year, maybe 2 now, and haven't had a single issue. That said, I haven't tried to adjust the back straps that were known to break (Salomon did eventually "update" the pack and they no longer have that issue). I love the Skin 12 because I can use it comfortably when it's fully loaded and when it has nothing but a couple soft flask-waters up front. I also like all of the pocket options. I do wish it had dedicated pole straps rather than stretchy bunchy cords, but that's my only complaint.
I got this vest a couple of weeks ago. I think they made some improvements on it. Instead of the fixed pouch for the water bubble in the back you can now take that one out. I’ve only just now looked at the toggles because you were talking about them. They seem to be fine. Btw I bought this as a replacement for the Skin 8. One and half years into regular use I had broken the front zipper on my Skin 8. No problem with Salomon, I didn’t have to send the Skin 8 back whilst I received a voucher for the price of a new one. Still convinced like you about the qualities about Salomon vests I went for the bigger vest this time.
The cord stopper issue seems to only occurs to black colorway, to the point some retailer actually ask customer to choose other color, I have the ebony and yellow and I have no issue with the stopper at the back, it's a wonderful pack and I recommend it.
I've heard that it was only on the black version. My little zip tie hack is still working to this day! It's a great pack, I was just pretty frustrated at it's out-of-the-box quality given it's pretty high price point. Thanks for watching!
@Salomon here's what you need to fix on ALL your vests: - Cinch system on the back. You got it right on the Active Skin 8. Z cinch on outside - Velcro on all pockets. One piece on the middle of pocket so fingers can get in to open the pocket. I used industrial self adhesive sticky velcro and it's holding up in 80F heat. You might need something better. - Water bottle neck cinch cord - This is a problem on ALL vests. Add a toggle so the user can really cinch it down. - Quiver attachment on all vests. You don't need all this product differentiation. Some people want the quiver and some don't. Just allow them to make the choice. Make 3 or 4 really functional vests (5L, 8L, 12L - you have these options right). - add some form of lock loop for the back zipper so that it can't come undone. A simple small bungie loop on the vest and a zip handle with a girth hitched plastic handle is functional. The user can then pull the zip handle through the small bungie loop and it'll stop the zip from coming loose. Even a velcro strip would work just to stop the zip from riding down.
I got mine for 100€ on sale and it's the best Salomon vest I ever had so far. But I also totally agree when it comes to the flasks, the flask pockets should be just a little wider. I was really struggling to get them back in after refilling in my last 100k race.
Thanks for the detailed review. My opinion to the vest is that all the front pockets are great and they make the vest very usable. The disadvantages are: As you showed, the valve of the soft flask are a misconstruction. The next thing is, if the vest is fully packed its to small, even without a bladder it could be a little bigger and the front straps nearer together. My next races will show how much I am affected.
The sizing is tricky for sure. You need to make sure you pack it with what you'll be carrying before deciding on which is the right fit. I also found that the ADV Skin 12 runs larger than the ADV Skin 5 even though they're nearly identical.
I had the same problem with the vest. The little fiddly toggle broke ~6 months after I bought it. I also did a home-made fix with a spare toggle and a rubber washer, but have since replaced it with a s/lab ultra vest. No toggles or fiddly things to break. I waited a long time to replace it, but when the s/lab vests went on sale at backcountry I pulled the trigger on the 8L. More appropriate size for me anyway. I never filled the 12L, so now it's nice to not have the extra bulk. I was worried that one of the other toggles or zippers would break at an inconvenient time, so that vest was a no-go for me. Thanks for the great reviews and reports.
Glad to hear the ultra works for you. I tried the 5L and 8L ultra SLAB vests and I liked them but they were almost TOO lightweight for me. They didn't hold weight well and bounced a lot. I think if I learned to lean out my long distance kit it might be a good option, but the ADV Skin works much better for me. Thanks for watching!
I use Advance Skin 6 it has a huge capacity, my Mavic Mini, jacket, emergency, and some more stuff always with me during trail running routine. I really think you can go camping with the 12 litters version 😄. I definitely recommend the advanced skin series.
100% agree with the dont-like list. I would add the fact that one side (really, one side doesn’t have cushioning) cuts into your shoulder when you run without shirt or with a singlet. It was burned, but not bleeding... yet.
That's interesting I don't have that issue. I've run a few races 50-100 miles in duration and really had no hot spots to complain about. However, I do put on Body Glide in any potential chafing areas before I start. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for a great video. As for the flasks you should try the Arch max Coneflask. They are super easy to get in after refill/use. I use them with the Salomon vests all the time.
You mentioned that there is side fit adjustment options on the pack.As far as i know all the loops are for different pole carrying options/positions.The only fit adjustment option is the front chords.Correct me if i'm wrong.Excellent pack and the manufacturing fault with the toggles are only on the black colour way😬
I live in Texas, and my big race for the year is in Georgia in May.... the HEAT on my back is the breaking point for me. Even in the winter the back gets warm, but in the summer, it is almost unbearable. Trying to manage my core temp in summer races is hard enough. So, I'm buying a Sense 8 Ultra for the non-winter months (which is most months in Texas). Thanks for the review!
Good call, the ADV skin 12 has too many layers in the back in my opinion. I've considered actually cutting them out but I can't bring myself to do it. It seems like it would be more functional just with one big stretchy pocket in the back.
Thanks so much for the review! Got this spontaneously today because it was at such a good price- half off! and I've been in the market for my first vest. So happy to hear that you've enjoyed it despite some small problems. Hope it will serve me well.
To make it easier to insert the flasks into the vest, i recommend to quickly inflate them with air. This works also, when the flasks are already filled up with water.
Vest looks good but very expensive. I use KALENJI MIXED ULTRA TRAIL RUNNING BAG 15 L - BLACK/BRONZE and its cost only 55€. And have More pockets.. I suggest You to make review..
Salomon recently released a new dark grey/black color called Ebony. It would be interesting to know if they also fixed the strap-part that was failing the regular black version!
The bungee sinch cord problem is usually found on the black colour way version. I fixed the problem for £1.50 by getting some new ones with spres from amazon. Great product and have used for training and racing up to 100 miles, but this fault should not happen on a high end pack
I heard it was only on the black model. Yeah I fixed mine too but man... These things are expensive! If it broke during a race I'd be pretty made. Thanks for watching!
A small tip I noticed: I found that blowing air into the soft flasks and inflating the bottle to make it more rigid really helps to insert the bottles back into the vest
For sure! That certainly helps. But ya gotta make sure to let the air out after or else it sloshes around and that annoys me like crazy! thanks for sharing.
@@ChaseTheSummit I may have missed it in your review, but do you use this vest on short runs? Would you also recommend it for short runs where not as much gear would be needed (6 - 12 miles) or is it overkill in your opinion?
I have the Active Skin 8 (2021 model) - black. The cinch bungie is vastly improved and is on the outside in a zig-zag fashion similar to the chest bungie. The benefit is you can put wet stuff in i so it's outside the pack and can hang there and drain/dry out. The soft flask bungies are crap. However if you make your own with toggles (very simple to do) and girth hitch to front loop on pockets you are golden. It does not have the back hip pocket like your ADV Skin 12 (you mentioned for gopro camera etc) but that's no biggie. The only real negative I have with mine is the inside pocket in the back pack part flap is too flappy and doesn't close properly. I used some industrial stick down velcro and it works a charm. Love the thing now. Put plenty of miles on it. Has a hydration flask pocket that I haven't used yet! Might use that for wind jacket as per your idea. The quiver can be added but it takes a bit of gerry rigging to get it to hook into the fabric (no loops) but is definitely doable.
I've heard they improved some of the bungees. That's great news! Mine is still held together with zip ties... but works great so I don't feel compelled to upgrade.
Great design, but the quality isn't so good. I still use it though. On mine, the bottle seam blew out on the first use. Sewed it back together and so far nothing else is broken.
Good coverage video. I had ordered this one and the Nathan Vaporkrar 2. Ended up keeping the Nathan. I did really like the chest bungee system more and the sexiness of the adv skin though. I did notice some major bounce if you crammed the Salomon full, have to know how to distribute weight.
Yeah its definitly a lightweight vest so it's something to be aware of. I've had pretty good luck with bounce. Much less than my UD vests. I also own the 5L version of the ADV SKIN and I love that vest. No issues on the smaller version! But yeah, I hate when things break on a brand new item! Thanks for watching!
That's a very honest review. I've had a similar experience with the running belt of Salomon. It was very comfortable, but the zip broke very quickly and what's worse, the shop where I bought it, made a lot of problems with acceptance of my complaint and repacing the product. This situation made me aware of "delicacy" of Salomon products. As you mentioned - so expensive products should be definitely more durable.
Piotr Piotr sorry to read. Just came from my local trail run store and bought the 2020 vest. They confirmed and showed me that they fixed the issue with the straps.
I think the vest was far too advanced in design and performance for this dude/reviewer. If you don't use the hydration sack you should get a running hydration belt. This vest is great for running long distances when you are out for 25 KMS and up, that's when You WILL Need the hydration sack; whether you don't use it because it's your personal preference it's a different story. This vest is well designed and it works beautifully when you actually use it as it was designed and intended to perform.
@@loslokos01 I'm not sure I follow. I wore this vest for several 50+ mile runs, unsupported 30+ mile runs in the mountains, and a 100 mile race prior to filming this. Isn't this what it was designed for? 🤔
I bought a second hand one on eBay. I really don’t see where the huge/ gigantic adjectives come from but I’m still getting used to it. As a former paratrooper used to carrying major loads in a Bergan I guess we have different ideas of capacity
Oddly they just shipped me a new one... which had the same problem. Mine works fine now with the ziptie/toggle replacement but not everyone should have to deal with this! Thanks for watching!
Great review! You failed to mention the most important accessory - the whistle!! :) Do like the vest. Like others, wish Salomon provided a tutorial video given the many moving parts. Not sure how to properly route the bladder hose as others have shared. Also, still not sure how to use the football shaped piece at the top of the bladder entry. You referenced it but how does it work? Keep up the good work!
The football! The only way I’ve figured out how to use it is to shove the football part through my bladder and then cinch it back to keep the bladder from moving... yeah, it’s probably wrong but it works?
Love the videos, love your personality, love your insight, keep it all coming. Just started running, but decent hiker and biker. Videos are super informative, very light, funny, love it all. I know we are all different, but curious what size you wear on this vest? FYI, hope to meet you Saturday on the Fells. Would love to get a pic. Also, I heard all the records on the Fells were done going CCW, so why do you like the clockwise better? I'm not looking to set any records, in fact, just hoping to make the cutoff time to complete my 4th lap. I've gotten familiar with clockwise based on your advice, thank you, but the CCW seems a smidge easier (on the legs) but not on the navigation. Much trickier blazewise going CCW. Thanks Dave
@@ChaseTheSummit Hi Dave, thanks so much for reaching out, that's truly amazing that you would do so, especially, the morning after the event. Blows my mind. Thanks and Congrats on another impressive performance! I literally just google the results wondering if they were up, and immediately looked for your result, after mine. I, on the otherhand, managed 25.75 miles, yes, you read that correctly. I'm a novice hiker, and ok biker, and even more so beginning runner, (hiked Washington a few times, read a few Jurek, Goggins, and Karnazes books), so, like most people, I wobbled through my first 50K ultra with TARC on my birthday back in Sept, Great Brook State Park. Soooo.... I immediately signed up for 40 Miler on the the Fells and I ran (fast hiked-slow jogged) the course both ways quite a few times as prep over the last couple months (best lap 2 hr 18 min). After my first ever lap hiked there, I knew, 40 was out, but 32 maybe doable, but the Fells laps were like "Wooah, people run this trail? Its more like Manadnock." But I loved it. So I thought I knew the course pretty well and could shave 5-15 off my best on the first 1 lap in a race, and with the 2 pm cut off, I knew I needed an average of three 2:20 laps. Embarrassed to say, when I got a 2:30 on the first lap yesterday, going clockwise, I thought, screw it, let me try the counter clockwise. BIG MISTAKE. I got lost, did an extra 1.75, YES, I'm still examining strava to learn how I managed this on the 2nd lap, killing my chance of being able to go out for a 4th. Managed to tough it out for a 3rd lap, but got the DNF. Still a great and painful and awesome experience. Especially the 3rd lap without the time pressure and enduring all the elements. Thought I spotted you going counter clockwise twice but didn't want to stop you. I will next time, hopefully as I'm passing you (JK obviously). Anyway, thanks again for showing interest in your fans, and providing so much support via sharing your experiences and just for being a overall cool dude and father. Congrats on those 4 and if some of them are still young enough, come on by VinKari Safari in Woburn and ask for me. Thank you!
I own one and have about 1000 miles on it. All my other vests have been rendered useless (except for one "bladder pack" on long HOT runs). Adv Skin 12 is not perfect, but it for ME it is close. The cinch down straps as a whole need some sort of revision. I didn't experience the issues you did with the clips breaking, but I've had them come loose when weighed down with "adventure run" gear. The little trash bag, while an AWESOME idea, needs revision. Mine would just flop out all the time when accessing the pocket, which was annoying and I cut it off. The little pockets without a zipper up top I think are intended to stow the straws on the long straw bottles, but I think they'd be better suited WITH a zipper with the intent of storing small items like gels, pills or even Chapstick. Luckily my small list of complaints are easily remedied if you aren't afraid to modify a $150 pack. You shouldn't have to, I know, but a big company like Salomon can't please everyone without offering up a fully custom build like you can with the small cottage companies producing ultralight backpacking/fastpacking gear. Boom there is an idea if someone isn't already doing it. Made to order high end running vests!
That's a great idea. It would be awesome if there was a website where you could customize and add/remove features! I know there's something like this for backpacks (Hyperlight) but nothing for running vests. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the great video, can you recommend a good 3-hour long run - smaller than the Salomon adv skin 12? also have the issues mentioned been addressed ?
Great review. Have you had any luck attaching poles and if so how easily have you been able to do it on the move. Sucks there's a fault with that grip.
I don't personally use poles but I think it would be quite easy to attach Z-Type poles to the back of the pack. It seems from other commenters that Salomon has resolved the little grip issue.
@@ChaseTheSummit let's hope I get one of the newer versions. I've always had Solomon and although I check out other brands they do seem to have mainly got it right! Thanks again for doing the review and thanks for your response 👍
Given that you ran a 100 miler in a 12, I assume (and hope, as I've just ordered one) that an 8 would be fine for a 50k with mandatory gear? First ultra so this may be a newbie question.
I suppose it depends on the ultra. Summer or winter? Layers take up a lot of space. If there's aid stations every 3-5 miles the 5L will be perfectly adequate for carrying hydration and nutrition. Heck, even a handheld might do the job. If it's an ultra with less aid stations or really long loops the 12 might be a better bet if you're on the slower side of the pack. If you're a faster runner again, the 5 is perfect. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit That's a great help thanks! Its actually the Adv Hydra 8. Which I believe is a 2019 model (didnt realise it wasnt then Skin). So 8 litres with several aid stations in May should be fine in that case fingers crossed. And no, I am definitely not at the front of the pack 😂
I basically just cinched a zip tie down behind where the toggle attached to the pack and added enough resistance so that it doesn't back off. It's janky but has actually been working for over a year and has gone through the watching machine so 🤷♂️
The Skin Pro 10 seems new which is why you probably haven't seen reviews. There was an older model with the same name but this newer one seems to borrow a lot from the ADV SKIN series. I personally haven't tried it but it appears to look more like a "pack" and less "vesty" with the dedicated pole holder and no bungies on the rear compartment. Pretty similar overall design to the ADV skin set. Looks like a nice bag! If you try it let me know what you think.

I have the exact same problems and likes with this vest. The toggle broke too and I didn't even use the backspace. But it's super comfortable! And it looks good - the race photos matter! :D
Sorry for the geeky question; what watch band is that; I’m trying to find exactly that color and hoping it’s Garmin. Thanks for the link if you’re able! Appreciate all of your videos!! So helpful.
It's not actually a dedicated phone pocket, it's just a pocket. So it's not waterproof or anything. I typically toss my phone in a ziplock bag, and then put it in the pocket. Hope that helps! Thanks for watcing!
Good review but....are you sure you choose the right size ? In front it seems a little bit small..so is for that maybe you don't have an easy access to all pockets?
Sizing could be a little off its kind of hard to tell. The vest is so stretchy that when I run I tend to tighten the straps way down to prevent bouncing. In this video I'm wearing it super loose just cause... I'm not running. I suppose I should try some other sizes but those back pockets are super hard to reach regardless of the fit. That said... I'm not all that flexible haha! Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
@@ChaseTheSummit interesting. Thank you. Salomon doesn't offer a insulated option for their flasks, that's why I was going to put a Nathan in the Salomon
Sizing is kind of weird because if you overstuff the vest it will feel much tighter. Ideally it would be nice to try them on in store but that's typically not possible. I'd go by their chest measurements as a start and buy from a place that has a good refund policy. Also, when you try the vest on make sure you pack it like you typically would! Hope that helps!
Thank you! I was ready to buy this one but now I won’t. Not just because of your little accident, but also because I had a similar issue with my salomon S lab 8l vest, particularly with the little elastic which holds the speed flask. It broke. So, no more new Salomon vests for me in 2020. P.S. Your tattoo says: «μου λείπεις»?
It's a bummer cause I really like their products! Hopefully they fix these issues. Yes, my tattoo is greek! Hopefully μου λείπεις is what I think it means. I don't speak the language haha.
Is there any link or useful video to teach how to adjust those cords in the front? I agree they are super hard to adjust and I had no idea how to do it
It's really just a personal preference thing. Fiddle with it at home with a loaded pack before you take it into the wild and get it dialed in. Hope that helps!
Probably. I don't know what you're carrying. I have both the 5 and 12 and end up just wearing the 12 for everything (even short runs) because it's not much heavier. The 8 looks great though, I'm sure it will be enough!
@@ChaseTheSummit Perfect thankyou! I wasn't sure if there was a proper way to do it. Or you just improvise whatever works. Salomon doesn't seem to have a guide for this pack unfortunately.
@@TheSlamDancer I had the Active. It's a great bit of kit BUT you only have front pockets , no side pockets like the 12 or 5 and no access to a kangaroo pocket behind your head. It also feels cheap compared to the 5 or 12. Personally, if you dont want the 12 I would get the 5. Plus you get the new wider bottles with the 12 or 5. The 8nhas the tiny opening ones
Question, as you know quite a bit about Salomon vests, i can pickup a 2020 version for $125 BUT they also sell a ADV Hydro 4 on amazon for $100... now I can find NOTHING on a Hydro 4?! Do you know anything of it? and can you recommend one over the other? Awesome videos BTW..big fan =]
Huh! thats a weird one. Looks exactly like a clone of the ADV Skin 5 set but maybe a tad smaller. Salomon is notorious for releasing new products quietly without posting them on their website first. That might be the case? Either way looks like a nice vest and very similar to the ADV Skin 5. Sorry I can't help more! Thanks for watching!
Hi Dave, can you tell me how is it to run with half full back compartment, please? I don't know whether I should buy 5 or 12 liters model. In 80% of times 5 liters one would be enough but on longer race I would need about 12 liters. I appreciate your thoughts! Cheers.
I have both the 5 and 12 and find myself reaching for the 12 more often. It rides great even with a 1/2 full rear compartment thanks to the cinch cords. Hope that helps!
@@ChaseTheSummit i see thanks.. but when water run low can you still lean and take sips? Sure ..straws definitely help..just look a bit funny.. I am searching online whether there are flat but harder more structured bottles .. thanks again
@@ChaseTheSummit I just started comparing all the sites. I just never knew L was shorthand for little with some companies. I will check that one out. Thanks.

Ooooh! Good tip, I just found them rather useless. Thanks for watching.
Good to hear!
Nice! Hope it works out for you!
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks my friend 👍🏻
I did test this one and the Adv Skin 5 Liter and I would recommend the 5L one. It takes the same amount but fits better even when you pack it with a few things.
I actually own both the 5 and 12 liter. I love the 5 liter but it doesnt comfortably hold the same bulk as the 12 liter for me. I use the 5 liter for shorter training runs or well supported races but I tend to grab the 12 liter for long unsupported runs. Thanks for watching!
Can you run shirtless with either and be comfortable?
@@LastGateFitness I think you could. I personally always at least have a singlet or something on. But the vest fits a lot like a T-Shirt and the materials are quite soft. Thanks for watching!
@@ChaseTheSummit Is the breathability of the Adv Skin 5 and 12 the same since they both have the same 3(?) layers on your back?
@@loserpro43210 the 5 is a little better because it doesn't have the additional zipper pouch on the outside. The 12 has 4 layers of material due to this.
I have the same softflasks.... gets in the pockets very easy when completely filled! If they are 1/2 filled blow air in them...they will go in the pockets very easily!!!
Hah, yeah I use that trick occasionally. Thanks for watching!
This video was very helpful and was an actually honest review. Your personality made this video enjoyable to watch. Thank you!
Thanks!
Ice packs sound nice... but heavy!
Just freeze a partially full camel bladder and use that maybe ? Instant cold water when you need a drink!! All the time keeping your back cold!
Those are spare chest clips/hooks.
I'm still wearing this vest. It's a good one! Thanks for watching an oldie Chad 😂
Interesting to hear that they've updated it without changing the name. I'll have to check it out!
@Salomon here's what you need to fix on ALL your vests:
- Cinch system on the back. You got it right on the Active Skin 8. Z cinch on outside
- Velcro on all pockets.
Good insight. It would be great to see some changes made!
Thanks for the in-depth review. I just ordered one based on your review and another reviewer. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching!
It blows my mind that all Salomon flasks don’t come with the on/off caps as a standard. Stops any accidental spillage & game changer!
Yeah for sure! I’m a big fan of my camelback bottles for that reason.
I wonder what people are doing - I have never had any spillage.
I got mine for 100€ on sale and it's the best Salomon vest I ever had so far. But I also totally agree when it comes to the flasks, the flask pockets should be just a little wider. I was really struggling to get them back in after refilling in my last 100k race.
Good price!
Thanks for the review. Only problem ive had is trying the hard bottom flasks which rubbed on my ribs. The soft bottoms work fine.
The vest actually has extra padding in that area for that very reason but yes you can still feel it! Thanks for sharing!
I have it. Probably ran 300-400 miles in it. I think I learn something new every time. It works pretty good.
I use Advance Skin 6 it has a huge capacity, my Mavic Mini, jacket, emergency, and some more stuff always with me during trail running routine. I really think you can go camping with the 12 litters version 😄. I definitely recommend the advanced skin series.
Thanks for sharing! The 12 can fit a lot!
You mentioned that there is side fit adjustment options on the pack.As far as i know all the loops are for different pole carrying options/positions.The only fit adjustment option is the front chords.Correct me if i'm wrong.Excellent pack and the manufacturing fault with the toggles are only on the black colour way😬
I suppose they serve two purposes haha. If you cinch them down they definitely tighten up the lower torso area. Thanks for the feedback!
Half off! Nice! Enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
where did you get it at half price?
@@gattylink Sorry, it was at a local departement store in Spain.
To make it easier to insert the flasks into the vest, i recommend to quickly inflate them with air. This works also, when the flasks are already filled up with water.
Thanks for sharing!
Bought this vest today from my local store. Definitely appreciate your videos
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it!
Vest looks good but very expensive. I use KALENJI MIXED ULTRA TRAIL RUNNING BAG 15 L - BLACK/BRONZE and its cost only 55€. And have More pockets.. I suggest You to make review..
I'll have to check it out! Thanks for watching!
Good review. Just bought my second Salomon Lab, this one as you reviewed for my first 100 miler. Thanks for the heads up. wj
Nice! Hope it works for you.
Great video!! By the way, the little broken toggle isn’t an issue anymore. It seems like Solomon has reengineered this on current packs.
That's good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Salomon recently released a new dark grey/black color called Ebony. It would be interesting to know if they also fixed the strap-part that was failing the regular black version!
That's good to hear. I hope there are no issues this time around!
I have that one - the Ebony. The cinch seems robust and is easily accessible from the side pocket. So far so good.
Terrific review! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I agree. Love the design, but I wish it was a bit more durable. Thanks for watching!
I have ran almost 2000 miles alternating between 2 of these packs. Zero issues, color faded a bit...that's all.
Nice! Did your bungee thing break?
Very thorough review thanks ..
Glad it was helpful!
Great review, really clear and helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Just blow air in the flasks when you put them back in. You can just suck the air out again. Then its easy to get them in/out. Works for me
You certainly get used to it but it can be annoying at times lol.
Fantastic review. Thanks for making this.
7:02 thank you for advertising this feature - quit littering your gel wrappers, people!
I bought a second hand one on eBay. I really don’t see where the huge/ gigantic adjectives come from but I’m still getting used to it. As a former paratrooper used to carrying major loads in a Bergan I guess we have different ideas of capacity
As a running vest it’s “huge” as a typical backpack it’s pretty small. Different tools for different jobs.
It's only the black colorway. I have heard of some mention that Salomon has some kit if you call it in to fix the back compression strap.
Oddly they just shipped me a new one... which had the same problem. Mine works fine now with the ziptie/toggle replacement but not everyone should have to deal with this! Thanks for watching!
Like the Solomon vest but hate the front closures. Been grabbing the raid light vest most often now - closure on thE Raidlight 6 and 12 make sense
Yeah they're hard to get used to. By now they don't bother me as much and I like how stretchy it is. Thanks for watching.
Chase the Summit I really enjoy your channel/videos and great info. 😀👍🏃♂️🏃♂️
Tremendously helpful review
Glad it was helpful!
You mention the adjustment straps on the side. They are actually part of the system to attach your running poles to the pack.
good to know! 😂
Interestingly, they eliminated that toggle that broke on the new version.
Oh weird, what did they put in its place?
Thanks Dave
Congrats on the 100! Trying to follow in your footsteps.
Hey Douglas! How did your race go?!
Thank you!
Excellent video and review!! Thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great review. How about doing a review on instinct running vest.
Thanks! I'll look into it!
Very good review, I would have loved to see how you attach and especially detach it from your chest as this is something I still struggle with
It took some practice but I'm pretty quick with it now. Thanks for watching!
what size do u have ? I'm 170cm height (male), what size that fit for me ?
I actually plan on getting one to go backpacking with so yeah.
Nice! Enjoy!
What size is this vest? And what is your night weight and chest measurement
Great review 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for the great video, can you recommend a good 3-hour long run - smaller than the Salomon adv skin 12? also have the issues mentioned been addressed ?
I've heard the issues have been fixed. The adv skin 5 set might be a better fit for shorter runs. Thanks for watching!
I have the Active Skin 5 and it would be a good fit for 3hr stints. See my comment above.
So, what would you buy instead?
Great review! I was able to snag this vest for $7.00 yes that’s right $7.00 at a store called Bargain Bin.
Whoa! That's a crazy deal.
Could you share a video of how you did your fix for the broken toggles.....I just can't figure it out myself.
I basically just cinched a zip tie down behind where the toggle attached to the pack and added enough resistance so that it doesn't back off. It's janky but has actually been working for over a year and has gone through the watching machine so 🤷♂️
HI mate quick one hwats your thoughts on the skin pro 10 vs this what one would you recommend and why? I cannot find any comparrison reviews
Weird right? Mine broke with almost no pressure applied. Thanks for watching! Get those race photos!
Sorry for the geeky question; what watch band is that; I’m trying to find exactly that color and hoping it’s Garmin. Thanks for the link if you’re able! Appreciate all of your videos!! So helpful.
Geeky questions are the best! The watch band I'm using is from a company called Ancool you can find it here: geni.us/wiZn
Is the phone storage pocket weather resistant or is it just stretch mesh materials
It's not actually a dedicated phone pocket, it's just a pocket. So it's not waterproof or anything. I typically toss my phone in a ziplock bag, and then put it in the pocket. Hope that helps! Thanks for watcing!
thanks your sharing
Good review but....are you sure you choose the right size ? In front it seems a little bit small..so is for that maybe you don't have an easy access to all pockets?
Sizing could be a little off its kind of hard to tell. The vest is so stretchy that when I run I tend to tighten the straps way down to prevent bouncing. In this video I'm wearing it super loose just cause... I'm not running. I suppose I should try some other sizes but those back pockets are super hard to reach regardless of the fit. That said... I'm not all that flexible haha! Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the review! Have you figured out what the two cord hooks are for in the main back pocket?
I think they're used to attach a pole carrying quiver? Not entirely sure. Thanks for watching!
they are spare clips for the front of the vest.
Great Video!! I was wondering if the Nathan insulated hydration bottle will fit in the Salomon Vest? Thank you
The bottle holders on the Salomon vest are REAL tight. I think anything bigger than a standard soft flask might be tough to fit in there
@@ChaseTheSummit interesting. Thank you. Salomon doesn't offer a insulated option for their flasks, that's why I was going to put a Nathan in the Salomon
I appreciate THIS REVIEW! 😁
Thanks for watching!
Great review!
Do you know if the Salomon sizing is accurate? It could probably be either a size small or medium and confused which one to get..
@@ChaseTheSummit it's just beautiful
Is there any link or useful video to teach how to adjust those cords in the front? I agree they are super hard to adjust and I had no idea how to do it
It's really just a personal preference thing. Fiddle with it at home with a loaded pack before you take it into the wild and get it dialed in. Hope that helps!
How much fluid do the water bottles hold? Thanks.
750ml each
In doubt about getting the Active Skin 8 vs the Advanced Skin 12. Dont do 100milers, more for runs of 30-50 km… would the Active 8 be plenty?
Probably. I don't know what you're carrying. I have both the 5 and 12 and end up just wearing the 12 for everything (even short runs) because it's not much heavier. The 8 looks great though, I'm sure it will be enough!
30-50 Km is my upper limit. I am using an Active Skin 8 and it is plenty for me.
Blow into and inflate the bottles before putting them back in. Makes it much easier
But they're already full of water 🤔
Have you experienced any of the 'pocket stitching coming lose' issues I have heard about?
Not so far and it’s gotten a lot of use and thrown in the clothes washing machine several times.
Great video man. I just bought one. I cannot figure out the correct way to route the hose from the bladder. How do u do it?
Yeah its a little tricky. You have to get creative about the attachment on the shoulder straps!
@@ChaseTheSummit Perfect thankyou!
I wasn't sure if there was a proper way to do it. Or you just improvise whatever works.
Salomon doesn't seem to have a guide for this pack unfortunately.
Great review!
Anyone know the difference between this vest and the Active? I have trouble finding any detailed comparisons…
Thanks.
The Active appears to be a waist belt? Which model were you referring to?
The ACTIVE SKIN 8 is a vest that looks quite like the one you reviewed - but I can’t find what specs that differ between the two…
@@TheSlamDancer I had the Active.
Thanks!🙏
@@ChaseTheSummit your response took about 1 second. Incredible! I will start with 12 one and I'll see if 5 one is still needed. Have a good one.
Thanks! The amazon link goes to an outdated model?
Hmm thats strange. Thanks! I'll fix that.
This should work! Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video! Will the 2L soft reservoir fit in the back?
Yes it will, but it rides a little weird in these. Still gets the job done though!
@@ChaseTheSummit Thanks for that!
How do you drink water , do you have to take them out every time you drink?
You can sort of lean down and take a sip but taking them out is easier. Salomon also sells flasks with long straws that make it easier.
@@ChaseTheSummit i see thanks.. but when water run low can you still lean and take sips? Sure ..straws definitely help..just look a bit funny.. I am searching online whether there are flat but harder more structured bottles .. thanks again
Super late to this conversation. I am looking for a vest for bigger guys. I’m 6’4” with a 48” chest. Everything seems suuuuuper tiny.
The ADV Skin vests come in multiple sizes. Have you checked their sizing chart?
@@ChaseTheSummit I just started comparing all the sites. I just never knew L was shorthand for little with some companies.
I will check that one out. Thanks.
I would love for you to try an Osprey Duro product, and compare it to this. Have you ever tried an Osprey product?
Or maybe even a larger comparison video with more brands included. Maybe Nathan, other ones from these comments, etc. :)
How do you adjust the attachment points?
They sort of pop out and pop back in... It's kind of a pain!
@@ChaseTheSummit yes. I finally got it. Took me 1.5 hours😃
CAN SOMOENE SHARE IF THE SALOMON WATER BOTTLES OR BLADDER LIKE THE ONES SHOWED ON THIS VIDEO TASTE LIKE PLASTIC? I ORDERED A CHINESE BRAND FOR MY FIRST VEST AND THE BLADDER TASTE LIKE PLASTIC CANT EVEN USE IT REALLY. IVE EVEN WASHED WITH BAKING SODA SEVERAL TIMES.
The first couple of uses can be a little weird but it goes away after a while.
