Nancy Sumner That’s awesome - would love the chance someday. They played in Ireland last year, but it was for one night at a small venue, so was sold out within minutes 😭
The whole idea of ELO was conceived by Jeff Lynne was to pick up where The Beatles left off. He thought they broke up too soon, there was much more they could have creatively written. But he imagined where the Beatles would have fit into the new decade that was the 70s. They came up with dazzling light shows with fluorescents, laser lighting, synthetic sounds, ect.
That's really interesting Simon. And he said it when reviewing this very song. ua-cam.com/video/vqaIH2U8vRI/v-deo.html Jerry Jaquinto's comment rings true.
@@bagelj Sorry you are wrong from the beginning there, ELO was Roy Wood's original concept, not Jeff Lynne's. Roy Wood was writing songs for The Move in 1967 and 1968 that his producer Tony Visconti had added a string section to giving them a classical /pop fusion sound. Roy liked the sound that Visconti was creating and he thought wouldn't it be great to have a band with it's own string section who could play the music instead of paying session musicians. Meanwhile Jeff Lynne was toiling away trying to have some success with his band, The Idle Race, Lynne's producers Chevin & Offord were adding a string section to some of The Idle Race songs. Jeff too liked the sound and when he met Roy Wood and Roy told him about his Electric Light Orchestra project, Jeff asked Roy if the could come onboard with Roy's new band. Roy agreed to let Jeff to get involved in The ELO project, there was only one problem, Roy was contracted to EMI's Regal Zonophone label and Jeff was contracted to United Artists Liberty label. So that both songwriters could be contracted to the same label, Jeff agreed to leave the unsuccessful Idle Race and join Roy in The Move providing Roy retired The Move and went ahead with his ELO project. Jeff Lynne joined The Move in February 1970, between mid 1970 and early 1972, Wood and Lynne were writing for both The Move and ELO. Due to problems caused by the bands management, Roy Wood quit ELO in June 1972 and formed Wizzard, Wood took ELO members Bill Hunt and Hugh McDowell with him to Wizzard, Bill played keyboards and Hugh played cello and Moog synthesiser. In late 1973 Hugh left Wizzard and returned to ELO.
It took 4 Beatles and George Martin to accomplish what Jeff Lynne has done musically all by himself. Of course, by popularity and commercially, The Beatles are no 1 but musically Jeff Lynne rules. I am a huge Beatles fan but Jeff Lynne is much better with Harmonies, Orchestration, as an incredible Producer, singer and songwriter. Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO!!! Please Tour in 2022!!!
Haha.. I'm a lifelong lover of Jeff Lynne and E.L.O. but have in the last 12 months discovered a phenomenal symphonic metal band called Nightwish with a remarkable lead singer called Floor Jansen so it's never too late for new discoveries 🙏😊👍❤️
In summer 1973 I was walking with my friends on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk when I saw the 'ELO' sign for a concert shortly in the Convention Center, so we went. I had heard them in our local underground radio station, so I knew that I liked them, but I couldn't remember what ELO stood for. We went to the concert inside and was blown away...we danced for two hours! They were awesome!!
I would say that from Eldorado (1974) Face the Music (1975) New World Record (1976) Out of the Blue (1977) and Discovery (1979) was ELO's golden time. OotB being the pinnacle of that procession. Man, I've loved this band since the early 70s and finally got to see them in Manchester, UK in 2018. I was not disappointed. Jeff is still the master and still massively underrated. It's good that ELO are now getting the credit they deserved.
Great reaction to my favorite ELO song and yeah man Jeff Lynne can still hit those high notes to this day. Check his bio out if you can Jamal he is easily one of the most talented people in the music biz. Only found out about music vid reactions not long ago and have seen many but and you are to me the most honest and entertaining in his reactions. Thanks and keep doing what you do.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".
I was in that movie, and got cut. I was so pissed when I went to see it. But after seeing it, the scene was soooooo unnecessary.

been listening to ELO forever, but had never heard this song until i watched the movie "Kingpin"....could not believe i had never heard it before, sooooooo good!!!
This is how I was introduced to E L O......love it! I had a Manhattan outfit in a small town.....they put this on.....and I kicked it in a bar with an inch of beer on the floor.
Think Jeff Lynne’s had the naturally curly hair thing going since early 70’s! Know you’ve reacted to & enjoyed Travelin Wilbury’s....Jeff was part of that super group as well. Also has worked with and/or produced the Beatles, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison & Bryan Adams. Very talented in every aspect of music!
I used to work at a very busy burrito shop, and we could play whatever music we wanted (within reason, obv). Whenever we were super busy and I noticed we were all getting stressed, I'd put on some ELO... and it would help every time! Hard to be anxious when you get into the groove.
Thank you so much for this video!!! ELO was one of my favorites back in the day, there was sooo many great bands. You're right when you express the fact of watching the performance live. This was WONDERFUL to watch and listen to.
I saw them in concert back in 1979(?). It's the best concert I've ever been to. The concert was in OKC Oklahoma, at the Civic Center. We didn't have time to get loaded. Best concert ever!!!!. Their light show was awesome too!
I'm one step away from 70. My dad was a DJ when I was little. I would always request buddy holly...I was 3. It's such a gas to share all these tunes with you and see you melt into the music. Music is like oxygen. You are just a lovely man and you take my mind off all that tries my spirit. Thank you Jamal! Stay healthy. Oh! My main claim to fame is I saw the Beatles in person twice!
I’ve been an ELO fan for 40 years. You did “Last Train to London”, but my favorite ELO song is a different train song...”Across the Border”. I’d love to see you do that one.
In the 60's Arthur Lee and his band "Love" used horns and strings in songs, not as prominent as ELO but well done, very underrated band ua-cam.com/video/RdPLlxoT_as/v-deo.html
John Lennon said that not only this was one of his favorite bands this was one of his favorite songs. She also said it reminded him of Marvin Gaye's I Heard it Through the Grapevine.
Jamel aka Jamal?...My band played this song in every club and theater we worked in from Maine all the way across Texas and, You know what, It always drew a rousing round of applause... I can't think of anywhere the crowd didn't like it! I envy you..getting to hear these songs and especially this band frsh and new. Their stuff is timeless. Long time Subscriber , first time commenter. Love your channel! Great content and you really listen to what your given. You’re one of my favorite reactors(that list is not long). ELO one of my fave groups. Even now, he’s still kept his fine vocals. I agree, great story teller . I don’t think there is anything he’s done that I don’t love.
Hey, man! I enjoy your videos a lot, dude. Thanks for doing these. In this video, you asked if you have to listen to a bunch of songs together to get a full story, and for ELO, off the top of my head I can think of two different albums that tell a full story. Those types of full albums telling one story are usually referred to as "Concept Albums." The first is Eldorado: A Symphony- that one is about a dude who is basically poor, homeless, and depressed, but he copes by living different fantasy lives in 'dream worlds.' The next one is Time- that one is about a dude who gets taken from the year 1981 by some time travelers into the year 2095. I hope that helps, man! I'm sure someone else has already suggested theses if you want a full album story.
One of their songs from about 1986 called Sorrow About To Fall almost perfectly describes what's going on right now in the U.S. It's almost like they had a time machine and traveled forward to our time, saw what was happening, then went back in time to warn everyone with a song. Really appreciate your honesty and integrity. Something That's sorely lacking these days. I'm turning 55 next month, so you can probably guess which music I grew up with. Watching the absolute joy on your face makes it almost like listening to these songs for the first time. Thank you for rekindling my love of good music. Hopefully this will inspire people to getting back to making music for the love of it. Not just for money.
Speaking of themes on their albums, ELO's album "Out of the Blue", is a 2 record set. Side three is called "Concerto for a Rainy Day", which starts with the song, "Standing in the Rain", and ends with "Mr. Blue Sky". I played this one to death when I was much younger. Now I think I need to buy it. :)
The love of my mother's life was a man named Nelson. They were never able to be married but she never got over him. This was one of her all time favorite songs. When I got older and paid attention to the lyrics, I realized why she loved it so much. She blew into his life on a southern wind and neither of them were ever the same. She's been gone 21 years and this song gets to me everytime I hear it.
The album 'Time' by ELO is easily my favourite, and if you ask me you should listen to the whole album, you can always do them one at a time, starting with the 'Prologue' and the 2nd track 'Twilight', they're on one track here. ua-cam.com/video/3U52sP25ynE/v-deo.html The album definitely tells a story, as do most of their stuff lol.
If Jeff Lynne is underrated, I wonder who is not after these facts…Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others.
When Jeff Lynne worked with Bob Dylan in the Traveling Wilburys, or perhaps earlier when he produced one of Dylan's albums, Bob asked him the meaning of the line "It's a real suffering", but he misquoted it as "It's a real submarine". Jeff got such a laugh out of it, he has been known to often sing it "submarine" in concert since then...
If you ever went to an ELO concert, you would be shocked as Jeff Lynne quite a detail guy; perfectionist if you will. The sound of the entire band is so pristine at every show you would honestly think they did a month long soundcheck! He has a talented staff on board to keep them sounding incredible.
I've seen ELO in concert, the strings are
Phenomenal, the harmony, the tight playing... Nothing like it. They sound
amazing!
Womanonthinice Lucky you! He’s obviously taken care of his voice over the years - he still sounds great!
Saw them 3 times within a year's time. He STILL sounds amazing, the band is awesome!!
Nancy Sumner That’s awesome - would love the chance someday. They played in Ireland last year, but it was for one night at a small venue, so was sold out within minutes 😭
Have seen them live as well. One of the best concerts I've been too! Absolutely phenomenal!
I was able to see them live. It was a great concert.
Can't Get It Out of My Head... there's another ELO gem for you
And One Summer Dream......

This song was a favourite of John Lennons'. He called ELO 'Sons of Beatles'

I love ELO, I have been a big fan since I was a young child in the 70s, Jeff Lynn is a musical genius 😎
My Daughter is a 2 in a row Indiana GOLDEN GLOVES BOXER. On a couple of entrances she used this music as her walkout music.
love this one!! ELO is so wonderful :D
Another great old E.L.O song.
~Thanks for bringing us along on this one, Jamal.
The quality is always there in studio or live, they are just superb.
I saw them in concert in Germany, when I was in the Army 1974. Songs with real lyrics, which is sorely missed.

The album definitely tells a story, as do most of their stuff lol.
i can't up vote this enough!
Also my favorite ELO album. Listen to the whole thing for sure, but Twilight and Yours Truly, 2095 are real gems.
@RichardWild I have "Time" and "Face the Music" albums on vinyl.
Absolutely love that album. Once I hear one song on Pandora I have to play the who album
Jeff Lynne=All Time Underrated List
ELO - Confusion!! ❤️
Another great song by ELO
Best thing on UA-cam my man!
You definitely need to hear ELO's "Yours Truly, 2095". It's about a guy who was dating a robot.
Favorite line "kiss her interface."
we've all been there right lads?
Jeff Lynne is a genius! Singer musician songwriter producer. Amazing! 😎🎼🎶🎵♥️🇨🇦
This is the one I was tryin' to remember the other day to suggest, so glad to see it.
One of Jeff Lynne's best song. He was also one of The Travelling Wilburys. Working class guy from Birmingham with gigantic talent.
If you ever went to an ELO concert, you would be shocked as Jeff Lynne quite a detail guy; perfectionist if you will. The sound of the entire band is so pristine at every show you would honestly think they did a month long soundcheck! He has a talented staff on board to keep them sounding incredible.
Jeff Lynne & ELO are a gift from the divine 😊
Yes 👍
Love it when you pull these old ELO gems out!!! Keep digging!!! 50 more to go!!! Live version of Roll Over Beethoven!!!!
I will never get enough of Jeff's voice!
Saw them in concert in 1978. They definitely set a high standard moving forward.
This is one of my absolute favorites! Been rocking this song for 25 years!
