    What are some things to look for in old analog mixers for this kind of thing? Any particular brands/eras that stand out?

      You know, this is a really good question that I don’t know the answer to. A friend from instgram recommended this CR1604 (not the vlz) to me and I know that it is relatively revered in the electronic community as being a solid warm mixer. But beyond that, I don’t know much. I can say though, that the mixer isn’t actually that important. To me what is important is that things happen in stages and that there is multiple pieces interacting with each other. You can get a lot of great “warm” tones from gain slightly overdriving things little by little at each spot. I think there are some boss mixers that people really like. I’ll pin this comment so hopefully some one can help you out more!

      I'm an (affordable) analog mixer aficionado you could say. You've got the old soundcrafts (spirit studios f.i.) which sound very warm. Then you've got the old Tascams which can overdrive and have a very musical EQ. Then you've got the old mackies (like in this vid) which sound more aggressive. You could also look out for the Boss BX which are crap, but used for their insane overdrive. Most times you can find them at lowish prices, but check if channels are working, crackling sounds on buttons/knobs can be solved with some deoxit.

    I used to have this mixer… and more importantly, I HAD the very first Mackie mixer, which was 16 channels… And it had four external sends per channel. And I used that feature a lot in my live performances - though very sadly… NO EQ. That said, I never ever EVER should’ve sold that. What a fantastic option to have on ANY mixer. 😌😝. Why don’t more mixers have at least 4 to 6 auxiliary sends? It’s criminal that they don’t. Game changing in my opinion … 🐜🐜🐜

    • @userfriendlysounds

      Absolutely. Super flexible and SO fun for no input mixing. Not to mention giving you the ability to run stereo out sends. But the EQ on this mixer is my favorite. The way it drives sounds SO GOOD

    That's another brilliant idea and sound. Do you think it can be done with Oto Boum instead of the Analog Heat? I've previously been doing that kind of distortions using my Panasonic RQ-L309 tape recorder as an Aux send. Then I was thinking it's that recorder which is kind of magical but now you've broken the spell. More Octatrack videos please 🙏

    the analog heat... i have an effects loop with BOSS half rack compressor, highpass/lowpass EQ, and a tube preamp that i assume kind of goes for the same concepts... what else does the heat have that could be added to my effect loop? the tube preamp has the gain, but maybe another drive? what does the heat even do?

    • @userfriendlysounds

      It’s different distortion circuits. So it’s the same I’d say but more different flavors. Plus envelope follower, lfo, 2 band eq, analog resonant filter, and midi controllable

    May I ask why use the headphone out from the Syntakt? -is it “hotter”/more fun? And can you use a stereo to 2x mono TS cable? I haven’t got a Heat, so I’m trying it with my sp404 overdrive effect. Using a smaller mixer to attenuate. The whole set up just SKREECHES. All I can hear in my head is UserFreindly barking at me, “you hecked that up!”

    Dumb question here! Is there any way to do this without a mixer? Could you use an interface with extra outputs to do this? Maybe run extra outputs into a distortion pedal and then back into open inputs on the interface and do the routing and limiting in the DAW? Could you achieve something similar with an MS-20? Thanks!

      @@userfriendlysounds going to watch this now, thank you for the feedback. I think I have what I need to make this work, I have a passive re-ampt box with an attenuator/level on it. I'd imagine that would work smashing into the RAT pedal or SD-1? I'll throw a limiter on my master so I don't destroy my monitors.

      @@userfriendlysoundsthanks for that "TaktBack" link - I searched comments for 'input to see if anyone had asked why you didn't use the Syntakt's input from a aux send. Would be great to hear that with the heat too? Maybe through a matrix mixer - bur that's prob asking too much LOL

    • @userfriendlysounds
      @userfriendlysounds  10 місяців тому

      @@neilbriscombe Im not sure, but probably because of how sensitive they are and how the slightest bit of dynamic can send the syntakt into a FB loop. Maybe something about the digital control vs the analog control of the 1604? Also, I lose track of what’s happening after just a loop or two so it could be that I was like okay that’s enough. Haha but using the aux ins on the syntakt is killer for this stuff because you have the vca to turn the feedback into a voice.
