Handel had great confidence in his own divinely inspired genius to write in English, which largely comes from Anglo-Saxon. Of course, the Saxons started in Saxony, before overtaking Roman-Celtic Britain in the 5th Century A.D.

@@andrewjackson7758 he wrote the libretto in English. In the case of The Messiah a selection of verses from the KJV Bible. A genius in his own right but Handel raises it to yet another level.

What a shame that the first singer rushed the recit. Her soprano colleague was thrilling in delivering always tasteful trills, unlike the mezzo who, just once, merely nodded barely the length of a second in that direction - how generous of you, lady, I hope the 'effort' wasn't too much for you.The voices were otherwise truly delightful but oh, oh, oh the decorative mismatch. It's an immense pity that what I remember most about this pairing is the above‐mentioned inattention to detail; inexcusable; I wonder that in rehearsal the conductor didn't raise the matter and insist that the 'culprit' be much more Handelian...

Mr Sarcastic Expert, if you looked at the score, you would notice that there are four trills writen down for the soprano, but just one for the alto. The singers diligently adhered to the notation.

Not only did she rush it, but she got her accompaniment in on it! How did she get them to rush too?? I've never been able to get my pianist to rush through with me, I just sound wrong and have to fix myself. Shame on the whole outfit. Shame on the conductor for not seeing her obvious scandal. It's his job to keep the tempo! How could he let her boss him around???
Or maybe it's written like that

But the style of the era allows for the singer to decorate at will.
