Looks like a Snap On ratcheting screw driver, that was an expensive investment for me but o have it now for over 35 years. Quality tool! Been doing all of my own lock replacements for 40+ years, got my certification and Bond in the states over 40 years ago. Moved to the EU and still do all of my own work on my rentals and home.
Thank you so much! This is the clearest and most helpful video on YT! Update: Just fitted new gearbox and barrel to my outside door and all perfect! Thank you SO much. Less than £50 and job done. Couldn't have done it with out you!
I only charge £80 plus the gearbox. About £120 total. Next time take the whole lock out and rest on the floor to change the gearbox. Always tighten the cylinder fixing screw last. It needs to be loose when fitting the handles. Also a good idea to strip the hook boxes and re lube them, if they are manky and dirty they will put unwanted stress on the gearbox and cause it to fail. Lifting the handle with your palm is bad, the component that the spindle goes through is only cast material, they often break from heavy handed use
Three years ago I changed one, but I removed the long metal strip completely, and it was not easy to get it back in exactly the right position. This time, I will use your trick of not removing the strip completely. Thank you so much for your clear and helpful video.
I had to sign on and comment and say THANK YOU SO MUCH, I repaired myself yesterday and followed your every step, lock is now functioning perfectly. Was worried for a few days as my door had no lock and I put a big bar on the handle to prevent someone breaking in.
That was brilliant! My lock has started to play up today and I was worried that it would a fortune to call out the D/G company. I will have a go myself, couldn't get better instructions than this video. Thanks for posting.
Cracking video. I easily removed all the locking mechanisms. Found that the door lock gear had broken inside. replacement sourced and fitted. Working perfectly. Thank you.
Wished I'd watched this video sooner. I'm on my 3rd new barrell in 3 months - been advised today at a local hardware store that it's most likely the gearbox that's stopping me from locking my door and not an issue with the barrell. However I'm now an expert in changing the barrell and removing the handle ! Will try removing the gearbox tomorrow and trying to find a replacement for it. Thanks again for posting. Update...successfully replaced the gearbox (local hardware store was very helpful and knowledgeable). Fairly straightforward to do this. Door now fully operational again !
Brilliant….answered all my questions and saved me waiting for my local glazing firm to come out at huge cost. I was wondering which screws to take out to access the gearbox.
Thanks for a great instructing video. Easy job that looked much worse before I found this video - so thanks again. My gearbox stopped working Sunday, and neither toolstation or Screwfix or Wickes had the part but one small family business on amazon had it for £17 next day delivery and the option I chose was next day before 1 pm + £2 other businesses was from £24 and not delivered before Tuesday. The part fitted perfectly just needed silicone for parsing the lock through (15 years of weather). Be careful when choosing the (right) model. There is another youtube with that theme.
Thank you so much for showing and explaining the door mechanism 👍 I've changed door handles and cylinder locks before but may have a problem with the internal mechanism which, thanks to you I can do myself saving a load of money which as a new pensioner will benefit me once again tremendous thanks 😊
Thanks appreciate all you tubers posting video’s like this saves us all paying a fortune for a locksmith or company selling us another door. Going forward for the sake of the environment and saving a lot of money we should all make an effort to fix things not just through products that fixable to landfill 👍👍👍
You're a Genius. My latch wont retract when operating the handle. I would have gone hell for leather undoing every knut bolt screw etc etc and end up in a metal mess 😂 The video was perfectly done. Clear concise and you made it easy to understand. You've got a great temperament to how you presented the video. Certainly gifted. BIG THANK YOU. 😊 👍
A great help. I too tried replacing the barrel but there’s nothing really in that to go wrong. I’m gonna get the old lock out and give it a go. Thanks, Buddy. 👍
Thank you for a straightforward and easy to understand video which explained things simply and clearly. I followed your example and successfully changed the gearbox in my door and it works perfectly! Thanks again.
Hi SJP. Great video and well presented. I always have a go at fixing stuff myself. There are plenty of videos on social media to look at, and learn how to do it. It also saves you money not having to pay a tradesman. Sorry guys. What you save by not paying them will allow you to buy yourself a set of tools. If I haven't got the appropriate tool for a job, I'll go out and buy one. You'll get a lot of joy from Doing It Yourself. And if you do get stuck with anything, you can always call in the tradesmen as a last resort. Thanks and take care.
Thanks a lot for that. Just locked my back door and there was a snap and it's very stiff to operate. Still locks but I'll need to replace it before it completely packs up. Much obliged to you for your guide.
A nicely presented explanation of lock strip down and replacement - thanks. May I make just one point, once you have removed the screws from the inside securing the door handle face plates, I’d recommend initially leaving the square connecting shaft in position until you have actually removed the external face plate, this will hold the face place plate and prevent it from falling off, potentially getting damaged and avoid unsightly dinks etc. Cheers
Truly appreciate, specially none DIY person your video made perfect sense. Very clear step by step instructions. Just a suggestion there is a hanging mobile pouch comes, might be ideal so u don't need to hold.
Great video! showed exactly what to unscrew on the metal strip to access and change the gear box, I was going to unscrew everything, this is much clearer.
Thankyou your video showed me how to remove my lock and lubricate all moving parts as I couldn't move it up and down. So far so good after lubricating. Thankyou very much
Thank you so much at least I know what’s wrong 👍🏻🤗✨I didn’t have all the tackle needed or the nu gear box . So I got an expert in he did charge £120 as you said but to be honest it’s cheaper than a new door or any of my botched attempts 😁thanks again I enjoyed your video 🤗
Legend, The three screws that go into the front of the gearbox that are different sizes if not put back in the right position door will not lock. After making a few adjustments mine is working fine now thank you very much.
Thanks mate, just needed to know how the mechanism works. Our door is locked and won't open because think the barrel is shot as it just turns round and around. Think it's going to need breaking off to replace. Not sure about doing that so getting a guy in.
sorted what type it is a single one square but i fitted ia all and cannot get the thin square latch to move I can see it acviated by the key euro cyclinder lock but this part not turning to move the thin square latch
Hi mate Great video On my lock the sliding rods on each side of the lock seem to be one piece going through the lock making it unable to be replaced the lock separately are some locks like this ? Thanks again
I replaced my own lock very similar to yours before seeing your video. Definitely a good thing that you took the time to make and post this video as many won't realise how easy this can be. Fair play to you I say.
Thank you , successfully changed central gear , very easy ,service charge 85 pounds . To break open door already paid 85 pounds cash .mine was lockmaster 35 mm single spindle .lots of them available in Amazon.
excellent. i am 78yrs old lady living in Pyrenees near Spanish border. difficult to find a locksmith to come out into Vallee dAspe. and i not enuff money anyway. My problem is door handle becoming more and more unnusable for well over a month. Then it got slammed shut one day and now unable to open it. I can turn handle up and it does its job. but the only key of loads i was given when i rented it will enter the lock but won't turn either way never used it anyway and don't know if it is the right one.
My problem: I believe the latch spring in the gearbox has dislodged or broken. I managed to get the barrel out but the strip seems to be stuck just below the upper door latch. Tried to lever it out but didn't want to use too much force so had to give up. Managed to put the barrel etc back in place so its no worse than when I started. Any ideas as to why the strip should stick at that point?
It's good to see the whole process, also to see you using hand tools not power. Many people use too much force & wreck the threads or screw heads. I'm just dealing with a wrecked center lock gearbox. The insides are often very weak & easily broken.
Looks like a Snap On ratcheting screw driver, that was an expensive investment for me but o have it now for over 35 years. Quality tool!

Thank you so much, AGAIN! Just did another door - found your video [which I'd saved] and job done. Simply couldn't have done either without you!
Thank you so much for posting I’ve saved £170.
So grateful to you for your clear step by step instructions 😀
You are a fantastic instructor/teacher … so clear , great pace and totally realistic . We’re on it tomorrow ! Thanks x
EXCELLENTLY done! Clear, precise instructions. Thank you very much for making this very helpful video.
Man, you saved me a £185 for a locksmith charges, thank you very much 👍🏼🙏👍🏼

I'm not great at DIY, but I watched this video and was able to replace my UPVC door's gearbox myself. Thanks!
I don't often comment on videos but watching this first made the job go much smoother. Thanks.

Excellent! not too much preamble at the start, got down to the issue quickly. well done.
Brilliantly explained sir. You've saved me a small fortune.
Thanks for sharing, yes difficult to record and do the work at the same time. It was highly educational to me.

Super helpful. I’m gonna take the gearbox out of my door and try to confirm what model it is so I can order a replacement. Thanks bro 😎
