Hines was a true basso and did not sound like a baritone with an extraordinary lower register. Incidentally, the "Calf of Gold" was written for bass solo and male choir, whereas this footage featured a mixed choir.
Hines sang this song, brutally high for a bass, quite well. But the stage director was an idiot, demanding that Hines jump into and off a table. Hines was willing to put up with anything, so he went along with the highly dangerous staging, an example of the totaled-theater nonsense that has by now virtually discredited the whole opera industry. And the Met wonders why it has had only 72% attendance for the last few years, a frightfully horrible statistic for a house where 95% attendance is considered mediocre and 80% disastrous.
Check out the Pide Piper performance from about 1958 by Van Johnson where all the music is from Peer Gynt. They copied this look. Actually, Jerry Hines had his own dark red Mephisto costume, which I saw him wear twice. Very Victorian. He was a great actor and singer and person, RIP
I'm not sure about the airdate(sometime in the 1950s, I guess); either NBC or ABC aired the program. (Both networks aired the "Firestone" show between the late 40s and the early 60s.)
Jerome Hines was an active Christian, so I wonder how he felt playing the Devil. I bet his attitude was "its only an opera and as for the fee I'll give 10% for charity and the church."
Tiene una voz impresionante, sin embargo el vestuario esta del asco, debe aparentar ser diablo y más bien parece el flautista de Hamelin. Y por otro lado también su interpretación esta medio amanerada la verdad. De todas maneras su voz impresiona.
Hines looks more like a muscular Robin Hood than the Devil.
addio bel passato !
Hines era un bravissimo attore e dal vivo aveva una voce meravigliosa del basso vero.
Hines = vero basso !
un Grande !
One of the truly great basses of the last century
Fantastic huge resonant bass......GREAT!
The Franco Corelli of basses.

I never heard Nicolai Ghiaurov sing the "Toreador Song", but it'd be very interesting to listen to.

This is the kind of operatic aria that Jackie Evancho should not even attempt to sing!
What year is this?
Looks like Ricky Ricardo to me... :) Just kidding, it is a fine video... :)
Jerome Hines was an active Christian, so I wonder how he felt playing the Devil. I bet his attitude was "its only an opera and as for the fee I'll give 10% for charity and the church."
What language is it, though?
French
This is not a production but a hasty thrown togeher mess for The Voice of Firestone.

Terrible diction, magnificent voice! They don't make them like that anymore...
I thought his French was good. I saw him do the whole part live, in 1989, many years after this clip was made, and he was excellent in every way.
In this clip, agreed, his diction is sub-par. Strange.
