  • Hey Free Range Friends! We made our first video Ikea Hack DIY Island a little over a year ago. It also happens to be our most popular video, with well over 100,000 views and many comments and questions. Wow! Thank you!
We decided to do an updated video to try and answer some of our most frequently asked questions.
Many have said that they're making the DIY kitchen island for their own houses. We're so excited about this, and would love to hear how it worked out for you!
Below you'll find links to the products we used, as well as some helpful (but optional) tools.
Thanks so much for watching and for all of your comments.
We hope you give us a like and consider subscribing for more DIY, and Home Decor on a budget!
    Tips:
~Completed measurements of the DIY kitchen island are:
    36 inches deep x 61.5 inches wide x 35 inches tall.
Of course, the size of the island can be customized to fit your space, depending on the size cabinets you choose.
We opted not to buy the legs and Ikea trim available for the cabinets. Instead we built a base which made it easier to add the shiplap near the ground.
Installing drawer pulls: We purchased the Euro-handle-it knob/drawer pull tool. It's one of the only tools that I found will help you line up and install handles that are wider than 5". This tool makes it soo easy.
Trim: We added trim that we cut to size to cover the end of the shiplap to give it the finished look. The length that you cut your pieces of shiplap on the sides will depend on the width of your trim. The choice is up to you.
~We made our own trim by ripping down wood that we had on hand.
~We included a 1.5 inch overhang in the front of the counter, over the drawers. Not sure if this is standard, but it has worked well for us!
~Just a reminder. IKEA cabinets come in a flat pack and have to be assembled.
~Take advantage of the kitchen specialist at the IKEA showroom. We found them to be knowledgeable and helpful.

We are in process of a kitchen remodel. Contractor has us scheduled for August 2023. Like you, we have 80's, low budget cabinetry in our kitchen, ugly oak veneer, which we had planned to paint white, and spruce up with new pulls and hinges.
We have a hideous blue countertop that came with the house, with a cheap double basin SS sink and cheap faucet.
We have the new flooring, new overhead lights, switches, etc. Farmhouse apron sink (single bowl), and we are now in process of finding new butcher block countertops. We REALLY wanted an island, but didn't have the budget for $3000-$5000. We looked and looked for the right fit, because we did want storage space, and the prefab islands didn't offer much by way of style and convenience. Then I stumbled upon your video and HOLY MACKEREL there it was! Everything we wanted. We watched your video and ordered everything we needed (minus the top) that same day because we knew it was the absolute perfect fit for our kitchen. So, thank you so very much for the work you did to bring this wonderful idea to our home.

If you had no over hang, what size butcher block would fit these draws nicely.

wow love it! just curious, you wrote that the width of the finalized island is 61.5", and yet the 2 ikea cabinets side to side should come out to 48"..? (2 x 24"?)I realize that you added the wood finishing around it , but still I don't really see where the extra 13.5" are on the video..I am I missing something..? many thanks!
