    I love that the instructions are in writing and there isn't someone talking through the whole video. Sometimes that can be annoying. Loved watching this. Clear instructions and upbeat music. Styles of videos make a huge difference.

    This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seems to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

    I think I’m gonna have wheels with breaks put on mine, and make the overhang longer to utilize it as a eating table, and even a desk. I LOVE this.

      @@TheRehabLife what is your total cost of island?

  • @tiannawoodson3074

    I built this exact island using this video and it came out perfect. The height is like a 1/4 inch below standard counter top height (for anyone who thinks it might be too short). I love the stained wood on the backside and top. It fits perfectly in my kitchen and is a lifesaver when it comes to storage. It's holding up well, water is no biggie, but we still use cutting boards on top of it (obviously). The Kallax shelf is sturdier than you think. We built the shelf alone, turned it on its side, and then I jumped (actually jumped) my 160 pound butt on it and wiggled around and it didn't budge. The decorative wood only made it sturdier. We opted to skip the trimming at the bottom and instead stained the 2x4 with the same stain we used for the top, still looks great. I agree the nails should have gone in the underside but with that length screws that wouldn't be possible. Also if your top pieces aren't perfectly straight (like ours) the two pieces on top may not be flush side by side and might collect debris (ours hasn't yet). Overall, very happy with this project. And equivalently sized island would have cost over $300 easily.

    I have plans to purchase this same IKEA unit. I'll place it near a large (floor to ceiling) window and fill it with plants and pretty colored glass (vases, sculptures, decorative prisms, etc.) I think it will look really nice with the sun shining through the glass and foliage.

    Thanks for that. I am moving into a new rental with a relatively sparce kitchen and intend turning a very similar unit into a floating island with castors for maneuverability. I wont be using the baseboard so that I can get to the brakes on the castors.I didn't think I wanted to clad the one (back) side but after seeing your end result I most certainly will be. Takes a rather basic piece of inexpensive furniture to a whole new level.

    This is a great piece. I'm building it at the moment. Its about a $150 build depending on what kind of wood you use. My only suggestion is use a 2" table top... looks better. I also went with a 6' table top to have 6 inches hang over on each end which helps with sitting on a stool.

    looks great. i put four together to make a big ol' kitchen island it is so helpful for storage and prep. it is not counter height...this is true. but that's okay. still works well. also great for putting out large spreads of food. i agree w comment about not having exposed screws on top esp if you plan to use this for food prep (crumbs can get in der)

    Thank you! I am looking to add a small storage area with a counter top in my kitchen. After perusing many store ads and online stores and not finding anything to fit the small space behind our backdoor, I just about gave up on my idea for this much needed extra storage and work space in our kitchen. I even spoke to the Lowes Design team about ordering a custom cabinet and counter top. After an estimate of $800.00 for a 36" W X 36" H X 10" D, I thought my dream of my little kitchen cubby, was over. But, after seeing this video.... I believe I can do this myself, for a lot less money! So, a really big "THANK YOU!" to you! I will send you a before and after pictures too!

    It would seem like food, drips from drinks would seep in to the seam of the too boards to us on your island top. So we would prefer one great big board or as tone countertop, granite or quartz. The area idea was cool though and we might do something along those lines in the sunroom where we need an island and a bar for seating. Thanks for the ideas! Clean and good job!

I'm also going to put the wheels on too so I can move it into another room during a party or dinner. Great DIY project using the Ikea Kallax. I have viewed many...Kallax videos for vinyl record storage since they are a perfect fit. Wondering if your project could serve as an audio component storage, and top for turntables/record players, amp and preamp.....approx 130lb on top, shelves filled w records. Think backer, top and side extra boards ADD extra support, still not sure of inner fiberboard shelves strong enuff overall?

      The Kallax units are pretty stable overall but adding some boards or 2x4s on the ends to carry some of the weight couldn't hurt! That's cool that they fit vinyls, wasn't aware of that!

      The Rehab Life Ikea Kallax and obsolte Expedit, which is a beefier model, are widely used with vinyl record collectors, enthusiasts and audiophiles. Some folks cut swimming float foam noodles to fit each cubby hole, so records come to edge evenly. I like your idea of wood bracing for any heavier audio components, especially backer board. Love to see you guys do audio components or vinyl storage projects!

      you could use glue (like tec7 for example) and just some screws from underneath to hold in place. But nevertheless great hack!

      Hey - actually thinking of completing this project and thought similar to you. The wood being used as the table top in this case probably isn't deep enough to be screwed into from the bottom? I'm thinking of using a deeper table top....

    • @Skalamusa
      @Skalamusa 8 років тому

      +Eng Keen Khor yes, its strong enough. That's a project that would not be handled from the top, it's just that, a simple top. Even glue with brad nails would have hold it just fine. If the bottom was screwed, why not the top?

    The two top pieces should have been cut and glued together before applying. That crack in between the two pieces is just begging for dirt and food particles to get stuck in there.

      @RylanStorm 5 років тому

      It's not going to make a huge difference. He's using soft wood and plenty of exposed screws so it's already unfit for preparing food on.

    Nice idea, only one question, Instead of screwing the top from above leaving holes and screw heads visible, why didn't you screw the top from below leaving an even clean top surface?

      As a beginner's level woodworking page we thought it would be easier for the majority of viewers to screw in from the top.

    Good idea but I ditch the allan key and use a ratchet and hex bit. You will be there hours on end just finger tight with the ratchet not too tight neather

    Great idea - although the finish would look a little better if the screws to attach the top would be fastened from underneath and not on the face - but that's a personal preference.

    Muy peligroso ponerse los clavos en la boca. A un familiar le tuvieron que hacer una traqueotomía por tragarse una púa que aguantaba en la boca. El trabajo que has realizado, perfecto.

    Ty for an easy beginner project that doesn't require a $10k woodshop. I love Ana-White but, her projects require too much skill and tools for a $$ poor novice.
    Question: Can you make the top wider to create a bar ledge to put stools under for eating? Or will this topple over?

  • @helenpatrick3279

    I bought (2) 2x2 Ikea shelf units. I wanted to have a 48"x48" work table on wheels. The problem with that is that you have to build it in the room and then it is nearly impossible to move it out of the room. Then on the internet, possibly Pinterest, that there was one that was made of 2 long shelf units that split down the middle like scissors (for lack of a better explanation) and go against your walls. It is really a great idea. Unfortunately, I had already had the wood cut at HD. And it will be longer than my shelf units. The internet unit was attached at one end so they swung together. But why do that. Make 2 separate units. And when you need to push them together. You can have a latch to keep them from sliding apart. OKAY, so here is my problem. Do I need frame supports at the ends - the shelf units will be centered? I am using Melamine ply for the top and 3/4 ply for the bottom. I need help! If I have 4" wheels on each corner, do I need a wheel under the center? I have so many questions and no one to ask. This unit above is great. I just wish that I had gotten that size shelves.
