We've done 2 kitchens with Ikea cabinets and wouldn't use anything else. The quality for the price is unbeatable. Your island result is a fantastic testament to how great they are.
Wow! How clever. I definitely have to “tuck away” this wonderful kitchen island diy for future use. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to an updated kitchen remodel tour.
Thanks so much for watching! The remodel is coming along and we’ll be giving an update soon! 😁
I love that you chose to repurpose the table top for your island. Gorgeous. Great idea with the ship lap as well.
Thanks so much. We try to repurpose things whenever we can. Great for the budget and one of a kind! 🌻
Wow! That piece is amazing! I was so surprised at how much can be stored in there. Great job!
Thanks so much for watching Audrey. We really love all the storage!
Oh it’s fabulous! This is EXACTLY what is live for our house. Excellent idea! 😀
Thanks so much for stopping by today! 😁
I did my whole kitchen in Ikea cabinets just like those. They are great. They aren't custom cabinets but I have had no issues with them. I love what you did with these to make an island. Great idea. And I love the wood on top!
Thank you so much. My wife and I just bought a house in Virginia Beach and are short on cash. This video is amazing. We will be trying to do something like this soon because our kitchen is so small!
I like how that Kitchen Island came out. Good work.
Absolutely fabulous drawers!

You’re very welcome! Glad you stopped by! 🌸🌸🌸
Great job!
Thanks!
Omg thank you sooo much will be making an ikea trip soon now I can tell this is what I wanted to to but now I know where to start thanks for sharing
I’m so glad the video helped. It can be overwhelming in IKEA for sure!
This is so awesome! You’ve done a great job. How did you attach the wood top? I see on your blog that you screwed the cabinet to the floor, is this step necessary? I don’t want to screw it to my floor
We used small “L” brackets underneath the top to connect to the cabinets to hold it in place. Yes, we screwed it to the floor. Hope this helps!
I really appreciate your input. We are in the middle of this project, and I forgot about trim. Would you please, kindly tell me how you did trim? Especially, in the front by the drawers. Thanks!
I would love to help where I can. We used 1x4 pre-primed trim, which we painted white. I hope that helps. We also have pictures on the blog, if you haven’t checked it out. freerangecottage.com/?s=IKEA+island
You’ll have to let us know how your island project goes. 😁
Thanks for watching!
awesome tutorials. Hello from Amsterdam.
So glad you visited today!
I really want to IKEA hack a kitchen island, so here I am watching videos. I started out totally overwhelmed...what the heck is shiplap! :-)
Hi Karena! Oh I don’t want you to be overwhelmed. But I understand because I’ve been there!
Shiplap is the wood that we put on the sides of the island. You can buy the individual boards at Home Depot. Hope that helps! 😁
@@FreeRangeCottage thank you so much! You were the first video I watched a propos of making an island. I'm on my way, wish me luck! :-)
So exciting Karena! Let me know how it goes. 🤗
Thanks for tip on hidden drawer just changed my order.
You’ll love that hidden drawer Kathy!
Amazing and Insprigin! Thanks
Thank you!
Thanks so much I'm planning my visit very shortly. I loved your cabinets. Do you recall the cabinet name etc. There's just so many to choose from.i love your countertop. O vs I don't want to completely copy your Fab work. But secretly I do....lol....I love that hidey draw.
Copy away! We’re loving it so much and I think you will too!
The base cabinets are Sektion. The drawers are Maximera and drawer fronts are Grimslov. Hope that helps!
Looks great! What are the dimensions of the countertop?
Great ideas. We are redoing our kitchen and need an island.
Good luck with your remodel! Thanks for stopping by today. 😁
Great job on the island. Looks so chic !! I have a few questions... What are the dimensions of the top wooden slab? Also, did you paint over the shiplap from Lowes or just used it as is by cutting it to size? How did you put on the top wooden slab over the cabinet- did you use a plywood in between the cabinet and the slab?
All of the details are in this blog post:
freerangecottage.com/?s=IKEA+island
Thanks for watching!
I love this,!!
Thanks so much! 🌻
This looks awesome!! I have older wood i want to use but am hesitant using in kitchen. Did you do anything to the top of the counter to make it food grade?
Hi Barbara. We didn’t do anything to the wood since it was already a table top in it’s “former life.” If you have wood that you want to use, just make sure that it isn’t treated wood of any kind. We used Tung oil on our butcher block counters. Hemp oil would also be food safe. Hope that helps! 😁
Free Range Cottage Ok. Thank you for the reply. And great work!!!
The shiplap sides that you put on, were they Already painted white from Lowes or was it plain wood and you had to paint it?
We used the unpainted from Lowe’s. However they make an already painted one that you can get at Home Depot. It all depends on what you like as the unpainted shiplap is beveled where the wood goes together. Thanks for watching!
omg, i love your hair!! my hair used to be that thick--before i had my daughter...i dont feel it is that thick anymore and i never know what to do with it, so normally pull it back into a messy bun......of course wish i looked that good too. i feel like i look like a toad with long hair when my hair is down.....just imagine that..
Hi Andrea. Thank you so much for the compliment on my hair. That video was at the beginning of growing out my natural color and I thought it looked crazy! I wish I looked good in a messy bun, but maybe those days are over. 😂🤣 Thanks for watching today! 🌸🌸🌸
Total cost pls or separately
I dont have a Ikea, but this is nice!!
Thanks so much Hazel. We have to drive three and a half hours to get to ur closest IKEA. Wish it was closer!
Do you have this on a base? And what are the length of the base cabinets you used? Thanks
Thanks for watching. All of the details are in my blog post and here is the link: freerangecottage.com/ikea-diy-kitchen-island-with-thrifted-counter-top/
😁
Holy cow.. you have so much cutlery!
😀
Great video. Can you explain in a little more detail the trim you used? what kind of material and how did you affix? Thank you
We used our tablesaw and cut the trim from extra pieces of wood (pine) to cover the ends of the shiplap and attached it with brad nails. You can check out my last video of the island.
ua-cam.com/video/LPuQwrjhdX0/v-deo.html
Hope that helps!
Do you the measurements etc height.length width. And how tall your seats are. Thanks so much looks amazing
Thanks so much for watching. The measurements are 34” deep x 60” long x 35” tall. The stools are from World Market. We keep them at about 24” high. But they adjust to be higher also.
@@FreeRangeCottage Hi, how are you? Luv your island and thinking of making one. I see the dimensions you have. What was the size of the cabinet? I'm on IKEA and seeing one for $60 that's 24x24x30" is that the one you have, thanks? ❤❤
Great job! Ikea is not so far from me might have to go check out their kitchen cabinets etc...
Oh I might be in trouble if IKEA was close to me! We have to drive three and a half hours to the nearest one. 😭
Love this! Did you purchase the 24x24x30 cabinets or the 30x24x30 cabinets? I guess I'm asking mostly for how deep you got them?
The cabinets are 24 inches deep. We added the top and shiplap with a 10 inch overhang for the barstools. Thanks for watching! 😁
It seems to me that the measurements are a little too short for a kitchen island. Did you add legs on this island?
@HUNCreative I think its the 30x24x30" cabinet 😀😀
you so nice ! well done! love from holland!
Thank you!
Hola! Un consulta con el agua del piso no tenes problemas?
Hi Juan. We don’t have a sink or any water connected to the island. So no problemas! 😁
Cute.
Thank you! 😊
Hi, can you specifically tell me what the name of the product you used for the back and sides that you bought from Lowe's? Is it T1-11 siding? THat is all I am coming up with. I appreciate you video and the idea for supporting a island countertop with seating.

Thanks! It does!!
I love it!! How did you attached the top with the cabinets?
We used L brackets. All of the details are found in my blog post: freerangecottage.com/ikea-diy-kitchen-island-with-thrifted-counter-top/
Thanks for watching! 😁
@@FreeRangeCottage oh ok thank you!
I adore this kitchen island of yours! It's beautiful. What are the dimensions?
Thank you so much. It’s 34 inches deep by 5 feet long by 35 inches tall. Hope that helps!
How did you secure it to the floor?
We used “L” brackets which were screwed to the tile floor and to the frame. You can go to freerangecottage.com/ikea-diy-kitchen-island-with-thrifted-counter-top/ and see the frame (base) on the floor.
Hey, can you tell what the height of the island is?
Sure. It's 35 inches high.
I will so do this
Thanks for watching! 😁
Can you tell me what is the name of the cabinet, because i cannot open the link because i am from germany 😊
Sure. They’re the Sektion base cabinets. The drawer fronts are the Maximera (I believe). They’re the shaker style fronts.
Hope that helps! 😁
Nothing wrong with IKEA cabinets. It’s all about how you care for your things. I once worked in a commercial space for a very large company for over 20 plus years and they had IKEA cabinets in their cafeteria and I would have never known they were IKEA cabinets if I didn’t happen to see the label one day on the inside of one of the cabinets as I was doing some maintenance work. If they hold up to that type of abuse then they’re good enough for your home.
I agree. Ours are holding up great and we heavily use them everyday! 🏡
How did u attach the wood top? Glue? Screws?
We actually used screws with L brackets. You can check out our updated video on this island for more details.

Thanks! 🌿🌿🌿
how much were the cabinets
How did you spend for both cabinets?

Thanks for watching! 😁
Loved this. How much did it cost
Thanks so much. I’m going to do a cost breakdown in an upcoming video. 😁
Is that tile new?? where it is from (store)
It's a porcelain tile that we bought locally 10 plus years ago. I don't have a source I can give you. Thanks for watching!
What is the name of the drawer? I can't find it
The info about the island is in my blog post:
freerangecottage.com/ikea-diy-kitchen-island-with-thrifted-counter-top/
The drawer is Maximera

Great video. Best diy kitchen that looks ez enough for a newbie like me to do. A couple of questions...
1. How did you attach the shiplap panels to your base and the ikea cabinets? Nail guns, glue, or nails?
2. How did you attach the countertop? L bracket screes from the out side to the shiplap? Or the ikea cabinets?
Yes used a nail gun. Attached the countertop to the cabinets with “L” brackets. Thanks for watching! 😁
Im amazed how those ikea cabinets actually took all the nails + is withstanding the weight of the countertop. How heavy was the board?
Not sure on the weight.
Can you share which cabinets you used from Ikea please?
Sure. We used the Sektion cabinets. For all of the details you can go here freerangecottage.com/ikea-diy-kitchen-island-with-thrifted-counter-top/. Thanks for watching! 😁
Thank you so much for responding and sharing your project! I will be following along.

It amazing but I need the plans on how you did the hidden drawer
Hi Tina. All of the drawers are from IKEA. You just have to put them together.
Thanks for watching! 🌸🌸🌸
Hi, can you link the ikea items here?
The links are found in my blog post here: freerangecottage.com/ikea-diy-kitchen-island-with-thrifted-counter-top/
Hope that helps!
How much did that cost?
The cost was only the two cabinets and shiplap for the sides.I believe it was under 800 but I’m not positive! The top we had already.
What base cabinet did u use
We used two 30 inch Sektion base cabinets. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@FreeRangeCottage Does Ikea have taller cabinets?
Hey Jamie. I missed your comment earlier! I'm not sure if they have taller cabinets. A taller kick plate (base) could raise them higher. A kitchen specialist at IKEA would be able to help you get just what you want. We found them to be very helpful!
Can you please share which cabinets you used? The name
We used the Sektion base cabinets. Maximera drawers with Grimslov drawer fronts. Hope that helps!
@@FreeRangeCottage Thank you so much, gonna do this as well.
That's great! You'll have to let me know how it turns out!
I would like to know how much that cost?
How much , it’s the most important part
Interesting, from all the 124 comments the “costs question” this is the only one who doesn’t received an answer 🧐.
Can you tell me exactly which cabinets these are? I NEEEEEED these and I can't seem to find the ones or similar to what you have. I looked in your blog, but it just brings me to the IKEA page, not the cabinets :( Please and thank you. I can not wait to make this!

Without sounding too nosey, lol, could you give a "ballpark figure" for a cost? {the Ikea part} just curious because I'm disabled and live on a pretty tight budget so I wouldn't want to get my hopes up if it was gonna be totally out of my reach! 😘 Tia... XO from Texas 🤠
I believe it was around $300. to $350. Here is the link to the IKEA cabinet section. www.ikea.com/us/en/search/products/?q=cabinets
There are less expensive options available also. Hope this helps and thanks for watching! 😁
