Should all be under warranty. Mines going into the shop this week. A few guys got Marshall USA on the phone recently and they are finally admitting to being aware of the problem cause it's so wide spread. They brushed me off the first time I called at launch. Anyways hurray!!!
It looks like you assigned switch #4 (OD2) to a higher Master Volume level. Am I correct? Or do you strive for unity gain with all four modes and just work your MV toggle switch on the foot pedal as the source of your lead boost. Do you always use MV2 for your leads/boosts?
Hi, since the pedal isn't programmable, it's just a matter of setting your channel volumes to be where you want them. I only used the 1 channel for clean, then the OD1/OD2 for crunch and lead. That made it easier to equalize the volumes. But yes, generally, I "assign" master 2 to the #4 switch for lead solo, use #3 for rhythm crunch, and channel 1 for clean. I basically skip the #2 button, but some people use it as an extra crunch option. It is louder than the #1 when you do that though. So then you can assign Master 2 to Channel 1 which would help equal the volume. It's a balancing act for sure, but I'm used to it. I've played 3 and 4 channel amps for years now, and right before I start my set I stomp all of them in order, testing what the overall volumes sound like.
Sorry you ended up with a pedal you can't use. I looked up the specs on the 40c and it only lists two- button switches as accessories. If you bought it from a retailer you should be able to return it, if not maybe resell or trade it? One other thought is to hold onto it if you're planning to upgrade to the CR eventually. The dual masters and footswitchable channel modes are a huge difference imho.
have this amp and it comes with 2 positition footswitch wich does not allow what you are showing, in reality its a 4 channel amp, my brother told me about this and after your demo I will order one. amp has great sound, better than my 65 twin unless you want clean sound, but the marshall crunch is great. curious about the effex loop so show what you find out about that.
I got my amp in 2019 it came with a 2 button. So I ordered this 6 button switch today from sweetwater. I am disappointed that Sweetwater did not advise of this. Too bad I do not read manuals now I will have to see if it tells about the 6-way footswitch. I am building a new pedal board so this will be a real killer set up if the 6-way switch works. The switch tax and all $160.00 USD free ship. GREAT VIDEO THANKS ALSO: Which mode is your favorite Pentode or Triode?
Hopefully you didn't have to wait too long, the 6 button switch is awesome, though. Engl did the same thing, in fact I didn't get any switch at all with my Screamer 50, and to get full functionality you need one of their multi-hundred dollar switches.
All right so the million dollar question does this pedal switch have the same delay that the one that comes with the amp has when switching channels? On the original pedal switch that comes with it there is a 250 ms delay almost 1/ quarter of a second which makes it not useable live..
I did another video with my DSL100HR head specifically comparing the latency of the row switches. It was a little bit, but definitely not 250ms. The 2 button and 6 button were the same
One point I think this video is missing is: this pedal can't do what the stock 2 button switch does- it can't switch from channel to channel with the press of just one button like you can with the 2 button switch- this avoids tap dancing on songs like Kryptonite where you need to switch from clean to distortion and back again several times throughout the song- one button does it all for songs like this but with the 6 button switch (correct me if I'm wrong- I don't have the 6 button) to do the same thing you would have to go back and forth between the clean button and the distortion button. This pedal is cool but I would prefer the one button switching over the ability to switch between 4 channels with 4 different buttons. It would be great if the 6 button pedal could do both but it doesn't appear that it can.
Yes you are correct, there's not a practical way to make one button on this switch from the clean channel to the distortion channel and back again. But they're right next to each other. The 6 button switch makes it act more like a 3 or 4 channel amp, where each switch turns on and then selects the gain mode of each channel, unlocking all the gain modes. If you're main thing is to have just one switch to go back and forth, then the 2 button switch is your solution. My main thing is that I want the dual masters to be selectable by footswitch during a performance. So many players when I'm doing sound don't do anything to boost their volume for solos. I do, and since our band is self mixed from the stage, I think it is very important.
@@milesfisher3185 Thank you for the confirmation Miles. Yes, the more important thing to me is the ability to switch between clean and gain at the push of a single button. I also do most of the lead vocals in our band, so in a song like Kryptonite it makes it easier to just have one button to switch between channels without having to look down at my feet while keeping my head straight to sing into the microphone. I like the idea of the 6 button switch- that would be very useful too- it's just too bad that both options aren't available on it. From what I understand, even a midi switch wouldn't solve this problem. As you point out, you can switch between master volumes with the 6 button switch, but you can do that with the 2 button too- just not as granularly between all 4 channels. That was also one of the reasons I wanted this amp- to be able to boost volume by just hitting one switch- unfortunately, with the 2 button switch, the volume boost is limited to switching between classic and ultra gain. If you like a lot of crunch- even with rhythm, like I do, it's not quite as satisfying as I would like. With the 6 button, as you say, you can switch between master volumes for lead boost on the same gain setting. If I want that with my current setup with this amp, I will have to resort to the volume pedal on my Digitech RP1000.
I should add that with my current setup, it is VERY difficult to boost the lead seamlessly (if not impossible) on Kryptonite and then switch to clean because my foot is dedicated to pressing the button between clean and gain- not being able to lower the volume on the volume pedal at the same time. After the first lead, I have to immediately switch to clean, meaning that the higher volume on the volume pedal has to be lowered first before switching or the clean rhythm will be too loud. Maybe the 6 button switch could solve that problem- albeit with tap dancing. Complicated! For now I will have to be able to be satisfied with an unboosted lead on that song.
Specific question -- if you have, say OD1, already assigned to MV2, how are you going to then use MV2 as a lead boost? That can go for any of the four modes. If you have any of them assigned to MV2 (red), you can't then step on the #5 switch and use it as lead boost -- the MV2 is already red -- because that's how you assigned it. The only choice you would then have is going to MV1 green, if you stepped on the MV switch. Green is the rhythm MV1, which defeats the purpose of having MV2 as a lead volume. Make sense? Very perplexed with this. Can you please enlighten me?
Just curious, is that same footswitch also available for the Marshall DSL 40C? I see that you're using the Marshall DSL 40 CR basically the same beast but a slightly newer updated model.
Got one of these amps but I can't seem to get the same volume when in clean on channel one to when I switch to crunch on channel one. The crunch always seems to up the volume. What I really want is for the volume to be the same between the two. I've tried setting volumes but doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Would love some advice. Thanks.
for the life of me i cant figure out why one of those buttons does not toggle the Reverb, the only reason id want another pedal is to toggle the amps digital spring reverb, i guess ill just have to use my Hall of fame reverb pedal in the loop and keep the stock two button switch that comes with the amp. i cant even get a MIDI controller to toggle the reverb so frustrating.
@@keithdarling8290 Actually it's very common to have a few pedals going in the effects loop and turning it on/off at the footswitch means you'll only be pressing one button right next to your gain which is why you'll probably be turning off the mod effects anyways(to turn on the gain for a lead tone/heavy rythem tone). Why would you want to turn the reverb on an off that's rediculous? You either dial in a tone with reverb or you don't. If you want another tone without reverb dial it in with one of the od channels with the reverb dialed out. It's a very suttle reverb anyways, more of a tone shaping reverb than an effect. Turning it on and off(which is one more thing you'll have to press mid song) isn't going to make enough audible differnce to most people anyways. You absolutly should be using your HOF if you need a reverb *effect* in your song/jam. There's a reason the reverb is no longer an on off footswitchable option, everyone using the old dsl's then finally Marshall realized how stupid an pointless it was to real giging musicians. It was taking up prime pedal real estate that is far better suited turning on/off the loop. Which has several other applications btw, if you still are confused I will happily list them out.
@@dannysmuzic1807 The R stands for Reverb I do believe or maybe Revision as this is the 3rd generation of the DSL series. Also sorry to hear that he passed away early this year as I watched this video a few years ago.
Thanks for the vid! Question: switching from OD1 to OD2, if you have a gain setting for OD1 and a different gain setting for OD2 does it remember the different gain settings when switching from OD1 to OD2?
Hello, I'm on vacation so I can't try it, but I suspect that it will not save gain settings like the Line 6 amps. I think all of the control knobs work in real time to whatever position it is turned.
Hi. Great video. So do you use the #4 (OD2) footswitch as a lead boost or do you toggle the MV switch for your boost? Also, I assume the MV2 is designed to be a lead channel; the MV1 as a rhythm channel. Is that how you see it, and do you always use them aa such?
I bet the midi can program all the channel modes, master volume and fx loop, just imagine it with a bigger footswitch system and your favorite pedals...oh man!
HI sorry for the delayed response, I didn't try a midi controller, but the manual details what it can do. It didn't have the same functionality as the 6 button switch, which is still the best option if you want to use all of the gain modes, master 1 and 2, etc.
Thanks for the short and sweet "How Too" video. I just got mine today from Sweetwater. I never thought about checking in the UK. Hell, mine from Sweetwater was $160!! I could've saved $40 and gotten it quicker if I had checked across the pond!! They should have made the Effect Loop Switch a Reverb On and Off Switch. More useful than the Effects......ya either turn on a Pedal in the Loop or off.....not very smart from Marshall!! Maybe somewhere there's a way to program that last Switch for the Reverb. If anyone knows, let us all know!! Thanks again.
You're welcome! Glad you got yours! Yeah the lack of a reverb switch is a sore spot with a lot of people...but I don't care for the built-in reverb anyhow and will use rack fx or stomp boxes as needed.
Yep, same here. The 1 extremely major thing that I have found with my CR is the amount of hiss..."White Noise" in the Effects Loop. I've never encountered that in any Amps Loop I've used in my 4+ decades of playing. I've had to add a Gate to my Loop to get rid of it. Sooooo, 1 Gate in my Pre Gain Effects and a second in the Loop. Oh well, a really inexpensive Joyo Gate does the trick perfectly. Yeah, they're cheap and made with a plastic case, it's designed exactly like the old MXR Gate...not the Smart Gate. Just a Threshold control, True Bypass and works perfectly. Wish the rest of my Pedals were as inexpensive!!....Those 2 cheap Gates work great to the couple thousand bucks on my board! Again, thanks and ROCK ON!! 🤘😖🤘
Hit your effects loop send and return with some contact cleaner. It shouldn't sound any different from the front of the amp. And check your pedals one at a time. My Dsl100hr was a little hissy at first but after rolling the tubes it's as quiet as can be even at significant volume.
@@keithdarling8290 Also most gates these days have built in loops so you only need one for your effects loop and front of amp. It's the "four cable method". Should save you some pedal board space.
Hi, I don't think so, because the 40 and 100 amps have two masters. Also I downloaded the manual for the 20 and it says to "connect the 2-button footwsitch" to the port.
I just bought the 6button foot switch on 4/15/22 . I played a gig w it yesterday and the foot switch would turn off and on during my gig . Has this ever happen to you . Sometimes it would take a few mins for it to power back on
@@milesfisher3185 that’s what I thought . However this is the second one a reordered . Thinking the fist one had a factory defect - I switched out all the cables aswell. What I did notice was that I play in a super loud grunge band and my Marshall dsl is pretty much at max volume . I almost feel like it’s the pedal shutting down to cool off . However I’ll switch over to the factory 2-button pedal the amp came with . And I can play my 3hour gig at max volume w no issues 🤷♂️ It’s odd that the 6-button pedal turns off on its own yet my 2pedal can stay on the entire time
Hi did you mean locked up? Once in a while it doesn't boot up correctly and I have to restart. I think the footswitch should be connected before powering on the amp. I haven't used it in a while though so I'm out of practice
Hey Miles, great job reviewing the amp and pedals. I was in exactly the same situation and your videos helped me make much better decisions... You keep mentioning you're playing AC/DC tribute shows, B.O.C, etc- similar to my gigs; except I throw in a twist with my band- I PLAY MY MANDOLIN THROUGH MY MARSHALL! (it's pretty sick- people trip out). I would, however, love to catch one of your shows somehow- are they recorded and on youtube also? What region of the country are you in? Peace, KM
Thank you! I only uploaded one or two AC DC covers, we should be back to playing by summer. However, I don't know how many places will be left here in Albuquerque NM to play. Where are you located? I need to see the mandolin through a Marshall thing 😃 did you post a video? 🎸 Rock on!
Wasn't the origional supposed to plug into the midi? I think marshall just quickly(Lol quickly was a year to them) threw something together. Not exactly a looker but if it works I'll still probably get one. I've had my DSL100HR since March 2018
I'm not sure about the midi thing, but I don't think so because according to the amp manual, Midi is limited to channel switching, fx loop, and master volume.
@@milesfisher3185 it was stated in a marshall video by the heavy British guy. They obviously had no intention of doing that foot switch Correctly from the beginning. They just threw something together now and lots of people on the forums are having trouble with their updated 6 button fs' s. But now that there is a model to go off we can start making our own.
@@milesfisher3185 Couldn't find it anywhere, even searching on web. And well, those amps are pretty expensive for brazilian standards... I remember paying R$3400 (saving money for almost 5 months, salary around R$1800/month) on my DSL40CR. But the footswitch, I think the only way to get my hands on those is importing one.
Not able to test this for sure, but I wouldn't try it based on lots of web searches to this effect. The DSL looks like it has two 1/4" footswitch jacks, which are probably series on/off (closed/open) switches. The DSL100cr uses only a single guitar cable for everything, probably based on resistance. It is highly likely that the resistance type switches are calibrated for only one model of amp each, hence the different model numbers of the pedals.
Hi, sorry, no more at this time. What would you like to see? I'm thinking of doing one with my Headrush plugged into the clean channel...it sounds really good like that.
It does but it's not bad and not more than other tube apps I've played. I actually demonstrate the delay in my video with the DSL100hr head. I play a steady rhythm and switch it on the fly so you can hear it
Thanks for the video. Is there a volume jump when you switch between the 4 gain channels? I know I can preset the volume levels using the master volume for red/red and green/green. But with this footswitch you can choose red/green and green/red. Just wondering if the volume can be pre-programmed.
It's not bad at all on the ultra channel but on the clean when you change gain modes it's a very noticeable jump. I use the dual masters to equal it out. Put the clean on the "solo" master level and it seems to balance out.
The consensus is that these footswitches run on resistance. If you connected two amps to one foot controller, it would change the value so it probably wouldn't work. That would be cool though. You might be able to slave two amps with midi, but you don't get the full functionality of the 6 button switch.
Well it's a Marshall "clean" so if you like a little grit it's fine. Definitely not Fender or Mesa. I think it shines on metal with the 2nd mode on the ultra gain channel. Also now I'm playing a lot with my Headrush through the clean channel. That gives me a really good clean, crunch, and all the FX I could want. Playing a show tomorrow with that setup.
that was funny , but i like epiphone except for one thing, you have to know how to set up a guitar cause they suck on that my nut is really screwed. but the gibson is way way more expensive . so learn baby learn!
Damnit! I had heard that one of those buttons was going to be Reverb On/Off... I have much less use for FX loop On/Off. Oh well, it’ll still be REALLY useful. I’ve had one back ordered from Sweetwater for about 6 months.
Pitbull.com got me one in a month. It will be out of stock. Select "notify me". You'll get an email with a link. GRAB IT FAST because it's 1st come 1st serve. But I got one in a month
@@radiohead102 you won't believe how much more useful your amp will be!!! Especially on stage... it is way too expensive, unless it does something that I don't know about (programmable?)... but being able to just step on buttons and switch every mode is AMAZING

With the original footswitch did you experience the slight delay when switching channels? And, if so, is that problem eliminated with the new footswitch?
I played a couple of shows with the 2-button footswitch. I didn't notice a significant delay with that or the 6- button switch but I have seen people blogging about it. I'll try them both on the DSL100HR which I just bought and post my findings.
I noticed it too!! I think everyone has it but only us OCD guys notice it. I wrote marshall about it and they didn't give a shit. Damn I'm glad I'm not alone lol. I'm using the DSL100HR. I've kinda gotten used to it since I've had the amp since it came out. On a thread I posted a guy said he tried a mesa boogie pedal instead with his dsl and the delay got better but who knows. If you didn't know already, it's there to cut out the pop and reverb bleedover. So it should be on everyone's amp but I've been playing almost 20 years and lots of pedals are instant, the dsl footswitch is not one of them.
Unfortunately no, it isn't. Unfortunately the same thing happens when switching between ANY channels (green, orange, red,..) with the 6-button footswitch. On top of this, my brand new 91016 died within the first 3 minutes of use.

I have a DSL40C and it didnt work with it. Now I'm stuck with this Footswitch.
@@milesfisher3185 Thanks for your opinion. Cheers mate. 🤘
Thank you for this !
You're welcome!
Great demo!
Thank you!
have this amp and it comes with 2 positition footswitch wich does not allow what you are showing, in reality its a 4 channel amp, my brother told me about this and after your demo I will order one. amp has great sound, better than my 65 twin unless you want clean sound, but the marshall crunch is great. curious about the effex loop so show what you find out about that.
Cell phone mics only register to about 72db. Most of the amp's character is in the 85+db range so that is why it does not sound good on cell phones.
GREAT VIDEO THANKS
ALSO: Which mode is your favorite Pentode or Triode?
Hopefully you didn't have to wait too long, the 6 button switch is awesome, though. Engl did the same thing, in fact I didn't get any switch at all with my Screamer 50, and to get full functionality you need one of their multi-hundred dollar switches.
Just ordered the amp and wanted to see what the floor. Board did and that’s sound cheers 🍻
I just got a used dsl40 and I'm thinking I need this and can ditch most my pedals lol
FYI: If you have a DSL 40C model this pedal will not work because it does not have MIDI capabilities.
Very good review !!!!
Thank you!
thanks for this video!!
You're welcome!
All right so the million dollar question does this pedal switch have the same delay that the one that comes with the amp has when switching channels?
On the original pedal switch that comes with it there is a 250 ms delay almost 1/ quarter of a second which makes it not useable live..
I found no noticeable difference between the two-button switch and the 6-button one.
Awesome, well done!
to get like delay or reverb whats the best to do justs add pedal?
Yes in my opinion
You have more control that way
Can ı use this for mg100fx?
Work for dsl40C?
I have one of these and always of this capability, could never find this switch. 4 flavors of marshall, who needs pedals?
Got one of these amps but I can't seem to get the same volume when in clean on channel one to when I switch to crunch on channel one. The crunch always seems to up the volume. What I really want is for the volume to be the same between the two. I've tried setting volumes but doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Would love some advice. Thanks.
Yes that does happen, one thing you can do is tell it to use Master Volume 2 on clean then you can compensate
Great! Does the Buttom 5 work as boost solo volume for all Channels?
Yes, it's a master boost (master 1 or 2 select) for whichever channel you're on when you push it.
@@milesfisher3185 Thanks. I was thinking of buying a EQ pedal for solo boost into the effect loop, but I think that the foot is better option.
@@milesfisher3185 Thanks!
for the life of me i cant figure out why one of those buttons does not toggle the Reverb, the only reason id want another pedal is to toggle the amps digital spring reverb, i guess ill just have to use my Hall of fame reverb pedal in the loop and keep the stock two button switch that comes with the amp. i cant even get a MIDI controller to toggle the reverb so frustrating.
Which has several other applications btw, if you still are confused I will happily list them out.
what kind of midi controller?
There's not a reverb control on this pedal?
Well not exactly, unless you put a reverb pedal in your FX loop...
I have the DSL 40C, no "R"? What does that mean? Will this pedal work for me?
I am sorry I am his wife and he passed away suddenly back in January. I hope someone can answer this for you.
@@milesfisher3185 OMG, I'm Soo sorry
What if you want to switch reverb?
Each channel has its own dedicated reverb level, but I'm sure it's going through the same unit and can't be switched between channels.
Very very very nice!!!!
yes I'm in uk,i have used andertons they have been grate, also riedys music are excellent,
Hi. Great video. So do you use the #4 (OD2) footswitch as a lead boost or do you toggle the MV switch for your boost? Also, I assume the MV2 is designed to be a lead channel; the MV1 as a rhythm channel. Is that how you see it, and do you always use them aa such?
I just got the atv150 will this pedal work for it ... just thought maybe you would know
I bet the midi can program all the channel modes, master volume and fx loop, just imagine it with a bigger footswitch system and your favorite pedals...oh man!
That would be cool...but the manual says MIDI switching is limited to channels, fx loop, and master 1/2 only :(
I have a single channel amp but decided to watch this demonstration anyway just in case.
have u tried a Midi controller?
Does this work with the dsl20hr
Hi, I don't think so, because the 40 and 100 amps have two masters. Also I downloaded the manual for the 20 and it says to "connect the 2-button footwsitch" to the port.
I just bought the 6button foot switch on 4/15/22 . I played a gig w it yesterday and the foot switch would turn off and on during my gig . Has this ever happen to you . Sometimes it would take a few mins for it to power back on
Youch sounds like a factory defect. Or a bad cable, because if it gets unplugged it can take some time to reboot. I never had this problem with mine.
And I can play my 3hour gig at max volume w no issues 🤷♂️
It’s odd that the 6-button pedal turns off on its own yet my 2pedal can stay on the entire time
Has your 6 button ever played up? Mine does when I turn the amp on.
Hi did you mean locked up? Once in a while it doesn't boot up correctly and I have to restart. I think the footswitch should be connected before powering on the amp. I haven't used it in a while though so I'm out of practice
Thanks for the Video. It's very helpful. 👊😎
Oh Dude.. I wish those things were sold in Brazil.
I'm sure you can buy one on line!
Does this work with the original JCM 2000 DSL 100? anybody . . .?
Not able to test this for sure, but I wouldn't try it based on lots of web searches to this effect. The DSL looks like it has two 1/4" footswitch jacks, which are probably series on/off (closed/open) switches. The DSL100cr uses only a single guitar cable for everything, probably based on resistance. It is highly likely that the resistance type switches are calibrated for only one model of amp each, hence the different model numbers of the pedals.
Do you have anymore vids of the dsl40?
Hi, sorry, no more at this time. What would you like to see? I'm thinking of doing one with my Headrush plugged into the clean channel...it sounds really good like that.
@@milesfisher3185 I was hoping you had a demo. It sounded pretty good in this vid.
gotta have this footswitch to make this amp right
Can it be programmed?
With the DSLCR amps the modes are fixed. There's no program or "learn" feature, I think that was on the JVMs
Thank you!
Does your amp have a slight switching delay when going from clean to dirty?
It does but it's not bad and not more than other tube apps I've played. I actually demonstrate the delay in my video with the DSL100hr head. I play a steady rhythm and switch it on the fly so you can hear it
@@milesfisher3185 okay I’ll check it out, thanks! Not a big deal I just have to plan ahead but something I noticed on mine.
Put the clean on the "solo" master level and it seems to balance out.
can you control 2 identical amps using 1 footswitch?
The consensus is that these footswitches run on resistance. If you connected two amps to one foot controller, it would change the value so it probably wouldn't work. That would be cool though. You might be able to slave two amps with midi, but you don't get the full functionality of the 6 button switch.
Hey. It´s fabulous. It works on DSLH-R. Do you know if this works on DSLH? The previous DSL gen.
Hello, I don't have a DSL-H to try with it, sorry.
Thanks man. Good job with the tutorial. I will try to write to Anderton's to ask. Thanks again.
Does this Amp good for high gain for extreme metal and have a good clean?
Well it's a Marshall "clean" so if you like a little grit it's fine. Definitely not Fender or Mesa. I think it shines on metal with the 2nd mode on the ultra gain channel. Also now I'm playing a lot with my Headrush through the clean channel. That gives me a really good clean, crunch, and all the FX I could want. Playing a show tomorrow with that setup.
@@milesfisher3185 good luck with the show, thanks man 👍

how much? thanks
