"Merry" The klabautermann is a water spirit or fairy that comes from actual Germanic mythology. They dwell on ships and are helpful spirits, often depicted as dressed in a yellow raincoat. In real mythology, they appear on well deserving ships but are completely unseen. There is only one bad omen related to them, they're only ever visible to the crew of a doomed ship. Oda really knows his stuff.

He doesn't even realises how hard that episode hit the fans' hearts back in the days when they followed one piece with only one episode per week for so long
Dude that shit hit so damn hard. I was watching it on TV with many missed episode but that didn't matter. Hearing the Merry say it wanted to go on more with them broke me then and it still breaks me today. There are a couple of scenes that do this to me and the fact multiple of those are from One Piece and mmost of them from anime/manga is pretty crazy.
Others are from berserk and 2 from Fmab ("it's a bad day for rain" and Hohenheims death)
Oda was like "look how I'll make these mortals cry over a goddamn ship"
animated ship. if you think about it, you would assume people will be more emotionaly invested with real life actors and props in movies and series, but Oda managed to make all of us cry like little bitches over animated(or drawn) characters and objects.

@@AbhishekSingh-jx2zn for me as well. there are a lot of great mangaka that i enjoyed and still enjoy reading their works, but non of them, even the greatest amongst them, are not on Oda's level. the man lives and breathes the OP story for almost every waking moment of his day, for the past 24 years, and this mentality is showing in his work.
@@MrGalRoz yeah in case of drawing i like murata (mangaka of one punch man) his drawings are so dammn clear but he only draws the manga the story of one punch man is written by another person but murata's drawing is best

And now that I think about it, maybe Oda did that on purpose

But then came the Summit War Arc, when the whole fandom got used to the "oda doesnt let anyone die" formula, BAM! Ace actually died

No one could ever watch these three episodes without crying... Ussop being the first to notice Merry’s voice shows how much he is affectionate to Merry.
What’s also amazing about this arc is that Robbin finally became Luffy’s crew for real. Have you noticed that now Robbin is now calling everyone by their names? Before this Enies Lobby story, Robbin never called them by names, but instead by their roles: like “captain”, “swordsman”, “long nose”.
Chimney and Gonbe doesn't get enough credit I'm telling you. A kid and a damn pet just casually went in and out of a World Government facility unharmed. They even survived a freaking Buster Call and they had fun throughout the whole journey. They should get bounties for real. Hahaha

He has written the crew so extraordinarily well. The strawhats as the main characters have this life and joy to them that u cant explain. Every single strawhat is a weird and out of this world personality but the little quirks about them feel so real. They act like how friends act like in the real world. The Strawhats and Luffy especially imo are some of the best protagonists written in a show

one of my favourite things about merry's spirit is that even it appearing at enies lobby actually makes sense practically when you think about it because of the storm carrying it there, it even makes it clear that it's a storm that covers between water 7 and enies lobby. you could argue it even just came down to fate that the ship happened to appear there, seeing as the straw hats seem to have a lot of say over fate already

Oh man.. The moment when Merry says ''I am Sorry''' Still gets me, That whole part is so fucking emotional, I can't handle it. Merry's Funeral is still one of the most emotional moments in One Piece for me. easily take one of the Top 3 spots. EASILY TOP 3!

Robin's farewell "gift" to Spandam is one of the most satisfying moments in this arc.
*ALL* of the Straw Hats - including Robin - heard Merry at Enies Lobby. The rest were just trusting they had a plan.
Usopp and Luffy had the closest connection, they _knew_ her when they heard. The others weren't quite as willing to accept it was truly Merry right away, but they eventually did.
This will go a lot more smoothly if you just accept you're going to cry.
The worst part of the whole thing is I can never get to this without just breaking down. Never. Doesn't matter if I'm watching the episode or watching a reaction or reading a freaking comment, I can't get through with dry eyes.

I think people who don't like One Piece are either intimidated by the length to tackle it, or they take it on expecting it to be like any other action shounen series instead of an adventure with a lot of emotional feels. There are also people who admit they avoided it because they didn't like the art style.

There is a precedence for Merry showing up. In Japanese legend, if an object is loved and cared for deeply, it gains a soul and a mind, and after a time, can even come to life.

The Merry showing up actually isn't completely out of the blue! They forshadowed it during episode 260 somewhere around the 7-7.5 minute mark when Usopp is talking to robin on the Sea Train. It shows the merry riding side by side with the sea train while engulfed in blue flames, the same way it burns when Merry eventually sinks after Enies Lobby.
Blue flames in one piece are typically restorative like a phoenix, so it could have even doubled as symbolic of its rebirth for its last trip chasing them to Enies Lobby. You asked for an explanation! Hopefully you see this if someone hasn't already mentioned it. :P

The way Oda and the producers of the anime have handled the farewell scene was magnificent.
They personified Merry and gave her a pure and childlike voice. It's like seeing off a family member in their last moments.
Though Merry knows that she is going to die, she still wanted to help the crew and was nothing but grateful.
Imagine a family member doing that instead of a boat. That of course makes you emotional.

Don't worry. The nobody dying thing is a valid criticism. But it's a shonen. When I was younger, I was always happy to find out a certain character survived, no matter how contrived.

I think one thing I'll always appreciate about One Piece is how well the emotional scenes are done. Like from the character expressions to the voice acting. It really draws me in and it's quite an experience. Even rewatching scenes like this one can sometimes still get to me.

And with the Merry emotional burial, we finish the Enies Lobby arc. It's a fan favorite for a reason, and the rescue at the end represents it perfectly.
I know that by this point you already started Thriller Bark, and I do sincerely hope you enjoy it. As much as I like it in the manga, the anime doesn't do it many favors until the very end. Stick through it and you'll be rewarded, but I think you'll like the between too. And finally, enjoy the tail end of Paradise. You're quickly enclosing on the end of the first half of series. There's many more adventures to come until then though.
This is one of those things no matter how many times you see, read or hear you have seed some tears.
imagine the emotional investment of people who had been watching One Piece 1 episode a week as it was coming out, and this episode was after 6 years from the start. you changed 6 grades in school, you might have even finished college during that time...
If you didn't cry during Merry's funeral, you can't call yourself a one piece fan.

in a certain episode of that arc, the frankly explains that the Merry can be inhabited by an entity called Klabautermann. it is not as if the ship were alive but it has a supernatural influence. This explains the fact that he appeared in that place at that moment, in theory.
this is when for me One Piece went from another good story to an Epic, we just didnt knew it was building up that far, and the cealing is still no where in sight
Just so you know there are only two confirmed deaths in one piece that isn't a flashback (technically) in luffys home town, Shanks crewmate Lucky Roo (fat guy eating meat) shot one of the bandits and the bandits leader was eaten alive by the sea monster that took shanks arm.
One Piece is the only anime which has made me cry the most.
I remember it was around this point I was the same as Ruff thinking "nobody has died so far." I miss those days lol.
