I bought a '00 in 2006. 15 years and 200k later, it's still my daily/work truck. I still maintain that the first gen tundras are better than any Tacoma.
agreed, fellow 05 DC owner with almost 300k on the motor and truck with no problems. Routine and by the book maintenance has kept it perfectly healthy so far!
Over here with my 1999 Indiana built Tundra and coming up on 210,000 miles and the only problem I have is I love working on it but never need to. Just drove cross country a little under 3,000 miles and no issues what so ever even when at 8,000 feet of evaluation. These trucks are mind blowing reliable and it makes me happy seeing them on the road.
@@spencercentala8630 love to hear that. I love these 1st gen tundras aswell. Happy to hear shes still going strong. These trucks will be around for a while. I just want to stock up on them
I bought my 05 tundra from my grandpa. He’s had it since 2006 ish and he kept great care of it which I’m extremely thankful for. It has dual piped exhaust… chrome tipped 😉. The wheels are chrome. All white with a canopy which is a life saver. It only has 158k miles. Only thing that’s wrong with it atm is the thermostat for the radiator is no good but I’m getting it changed out for a new one in a week from now. But other than that it runs great. Fires up every single time. Only thing I wish is it had was a crew cab it’s a extended cab and when I’m going on fishing trips it can get pretty cramped in there
I just found your content today. You have made me fall in love with my 06 Tundra all over again. Unfortunately it has never been garaged and the paint has weathered prematurely, but only has 82k miles on it. I have never done anything to the engine other than change the oil. I do have a check engine come on occasionally but have never chased down the code. I am changing out the headlight on it today, hopefully I got the right ones. I am going to clean it up and update it a bit as opposed to looking for a newer Tacoma which is what I was thinking about doing. Thank you for stopping me in my tracks and helping me realize the Gem that I already have.
I've got an 04 Tundra I bought new and now has 210 k miles on. It has been by far the BEST vehicle I have ever owned. Second timing belt, water pump and thermostat change. I also repaced all the speakers because the OEM ones were shot. Also installed Kicker 150 watt powered ( hideaway 8 inch) under the drivers seat. It sounds amazeballs now...
Beautiful. Wish these weren’t so difficult to find in good condition. I am also not a fan of the fake wood interior panels, I think you did a good job with the wrap.
Just bought a 2004 tundra with 165k miles. Seems solid but so far no issues, but you never know right. Looking at videos to see what I need to look out for. thanks
had the same issue with brakes when I got mine, I put new calipers rotors pads shoes drums braided line all around full bleed. it's nice now, a lil over quarter pedal is all I need, firmed up nicely
im a proud owner of a 2005 4runner with the 4.7 V8 and it has 167k on it and i agree with everything you said relating to my own 4runner. these older trucks are bad ass. btw dont forget the timing belt change! that is the most important service on these 2005 thru 2009 4.7's!
I love my 1st Gen DC Tundra as well. Mine has 229k miles on it now and it has been a joy to own. I sold a 2nd gen Tacoma to get the ultimate midsized truck and I don't regret it.
Love my 06 DC! Second first gen in the family! My dad's is an 03 with just over 400k. Probably what inspired me the most to get one lol. Love the Tundra content please keep doing it
My Gen 1 has 315K and really no issues. Small exhaust manifold leak that will be addressed soon. Keep on driving it with no worries. Great truck you have especially with the miles and condition.
You can install the brakes and rotors from the Lexus SUV . I think it was from 08-14 . They are a larger rotor/caliper combo. You need at least 17" wheels for clearance. Stainless brake lines help a bit.. It also looks like you need to flush your power steering and brake fluid. Those are super easy. You can also convert the rear end to disc although if you buy the kit its pricey. If you can fabricate it costs a few hundred bucks for the materials and calipers/rotors. .I would post pics but I can't in the comments.
Put leds in the dome lights! Much brighter. I agree on the brakes, I have the 2005 Sequoia 208k miles, runs and drives like new. Can haul, tow and rides smooth. Just keep gas in it!
Your videos on this truck have helped me out a lot with my own double cab. FWIW, the GX460 brake mod will work on 17” wheels, however there’s a guy who sells the upgrade and part of what he does is modify the brackets, a part of it needs to be milled I believe. You also have the option of Powerstop brakes, and ive heard that a T100 brake booster swap helps to remove some of the dead pedal travel before your pedal actually begins to brake. Also if you have had any inkling to retrofit projectors into those headlights.... don’t. I just attempted last night on the same set, and they are a nightmare to separate. Again, your video gave me the confidence to attempt it, but the seal they use on these headlights is almost like panelbond, and the plastic housing started to give before the seal did. BX Built makes completed sets for around $500, and after destroying a housing that’s the route I’m taking.
I found your channel last year when I was researching 1st Gen Tundras. I was hoping to buy one but couldn't find one without a ton of rust whenever I was looking. I ended up getting an '08 F150 instead. I love my truck but still really like these old Tundras. Thanks for the update and keep making more Tundra videos!
I have the same truck...and a noise it's coming from the rear side...my friend it could be the rear Axel or maybe the differential.. what do you think it could be
Beautiful truck. Thanks for the update! What’re your thoughts on the more off-road upgrades? Such as locking diffs, exterior lighting, manual transfer case swap etc. keep the tundra content coming!
Great video and your truck looks awesome, exactly what I want! I have a GX460 and considering an 05-06 Tundra for a truck. You’re correct the GX460 brakes are a common upgrade on other Toyota’s like older 4Runners, GX470, and the Tundra.
If this truck had better braking, I would be ultra in love with it. I know of options but let me do my research. Either way, ill make a video on the outcome 😎
I put 2015 lexus gx460 calipers and rotors on my 2004 DC. It is the most bang for the buck brake upgrade. The best money spent of anything I have done to my truck. Its a straight bolt on other than having to machine down the mounting ears 3.5mm. Also did the steel braided lines. The whole upgrade cost roughly 600$.
No problem! Just be patient - I waited for months and was about to book a 1 way ticket to buy one 2 states away....then mine popped up 30 minutes from home!
#1) What are the make and style # of the wheels you installed? #2) I have an ‘07 Sequoia (same frame and front half as your Tundra crew cab) and, while I did NOT increase the diameter of the rotors from stock to fit under my 17” wheels, I did install Baer drilled and slotted Decella Sport Rotors (front = 31267-020 / rear = 31294-020) with a set of EBC Orange Stuff (Heavy Duty / Towing) brake pads on all four corners. Braking confidence while towing is greatly improved over the factory rotors and pads. I do know that there was a TRD Big Brake Kit for just the front only for these first gen Tundras and Sequoias. The stock front calipers are four piston and (I think) the TRD calipers are six piston.
Excellent job with your videos and I love that truck. I have a 2003 Toyota sequoia that I adore and I have made some of the modifications that you have to your tundra. Great job

You never said what year this is. Ok, so it’s a 2005? Did you know this is the first year of the dreaded secondary air injection pumps? I’m looking for a low mileage 2004 Limited Double Cab 4X4 fully loaded.
What do you think about installing a winch tucked away behind the front bumper? I’ve seen pictures in forums of it being done but I’m not really sure how people did it or where else you could mount a winch to this truck.
Hey @Garage Topics!!! Since your TUNDRA is a first gen, 16 going on 17 years now as of 2021, do you think you will ever have a hard time finding any parts if you get serviced at the local Toyota Dealership, for example if you needed to replace an important engine part, interior part, or system (i.e. air conditioning needing repair, or replacement radiator?) I havre a buddy of mine that has the first generation Toyota Tacoma from 1995, and he cant find any replacement cupholders, LED odometer lights, (his RPM side of his nightlights have been long burnt out, and the Toyota dealership stated that they cannot find anymore parts.) I am SOOO in love with this generation and body style of the FIRST GEN, but am scared that if I do buy one in the future, the OBSOLENCE will take place much sooner, than later! D: Please advise!
All cars have this issue when they get old, but there are tons of first gen tundras still around or in junkyards/ebay so spare parts are easy to come by
Nice video. I’m going to look at a 2006 tundra quad cab with 221,000 miles has a cap on the bed from pictures truck looks great. He’s ask 7,800 which is cheap with the price of used cars. Is the tundra worth the money. Thanks
@@Garagetopics thanks for quick reply. I’m going to look at truck this Sunday morning. Only bad thing we got snow last night now I have to lay on wet ground to check underneath truck for rust. Oh also truck just passed state inspection last month and he just put on 4 new Michelin tires.
Spoke to my local mechanic just to make sure he can do it but since I don’t know when the last time a timing belt was put on the first order of business is to replace timing belt and water pump. Well worth the money. I researched and price should be just about 1,00.00 . Does that sound correct. What else should I have my mechanic do. Also I know oil change. Thanks
Tuf to find with low miles and not abused in ct. Unless you're paying top dollar. May get brand new tundra crewcab hybrid 2022 if toyota gives thumbs up on production. Probably will cost me $ 55,000 or more

I havre a buddy of mine that has the first generation Toyota Tacoma from 1995, and he cant find any replacement cupholders, LED odometer lights, (his RPM side of his nightlights have been long burnt out, and the Toyota dealership stated that they cannot find anymore parts.)
I am SOOO in love with this generation and body style of the FIRST GEN, but am scared that if I do buy one in the future, the OBSOLENCE will take place much sooner, than later! D:
Please advise!
Thanks
If that truck is not super rusty, that is a 100% buy
Thanks
Timing belt for parts and labor should be less than 1000 bucks (I hope). I had it done in 2019 for 700. Ball joints, replace with oem ball joints only
@@Garagetopics remember with Covid everything has gone up. My guy is pretty reasonable he takes care of me. Thanks
Tuf to find with low miles and not abused in ct. Unless you're paying top dollar. May get brand new tundra crewcab hybrid 2022 if toyota gives thumbs up on production. Probably will cost me $ 55,000 or more
Which headlight housing did you use?
What MPG do you the setup on your tundra ?
My 00 ac is just getting broken in at 91, 000+ miles.
I’m getting a 06 tundra in may what is the first thing I should do
Make sure the timing belt and lower ball joints have been replaced. If not, replace ball joint with owm replacement
Is the consensus that the timing belt should be done every 100,000 miles?
Yes! Technically I think its 90k miles
So the 4.7 has a timing belt but the 4.6 has a chain.
