Medical racism occurs even when everything is fine and dandy. I am not shocked they are in full form during a pandemic.
Med school is rough as a black woman and can be depressing. I had a culture shock my first semester. I was shocked and disappointed that the lack of diversity was still “normal” when I commenced med school.

Dr. KinkyCurly my mom as a teacher has had to turn around a lot of young black kids who assume either they only had the option to do rap or basketball, there is no other option they can see, then Obama became president and helped a little more for kids to have something else that they could do for themselves, anyway it helps if more kids know you’re there in anyway you can represent #representationmatters

As a Cis, White, Gay man I am probably a demographic that you wouldn’t expect to be such and avid watcher of the For Harriet Channel. This channel expands my thought on problems in our society that with my privilege I never would have known or even thought was happening. This video in particular was so eye opening on so many topics. Thank you for the education and I hope your videos and messages are heard by millions. I understand that there is absolutely NO WAY for me to know what the black community has to go through on a daily basis and I try to educate myself on humanity in general and where as a society we need to change. Black privilege is also very real though in this country, in many ways. Let's try to remember that
I am half black and half Native American and its the SAME story in those communities. My family on the Navajo reservation has been harder hit than ANYONE I know. I’ve lost three grandparents within the past three weeks and I am more frustrated than I have even been about the systemic inequalities.
I'm so sorry sis, that is a tragedy that could have been preventable. I'm sorry that we have failed your community.

@@danishamcclendon I'm currently at university so I don't really know. From how I know it to be, people probably are not . It is common to have a multigenerational home and to visit family throughout the date at different houses. I know from cousins that I have spoken too that some family members are staying home, but it is impossible to know about everyone because the family is extended and there is not wifi or cell signal readily available everywhere, so it is sometimes hard to reach some family.

lol Sometimes I believe a lot of black people would feel more comfortable living in that kind of world. Esp. when it comes to healthcare - it's such a personal TRUST centered experience.
I wish we werent so traumatized by what was done to us in the past. It systematically destroyed our once strong, social bond.

This is the reason why I still push forward for a career in medicine despite all hardships. There needs to be more doctors who look like the patients they’re advocating for. Hard to imagine I’ll be a doctor on the front lines in July.

However, I actually have seen at least one video of a black male doctor who was commenting on the validity of how medicine is depicted in movies and, because he was handsome, people did comment on his looks from time to time. This is not intended to debunk your statement in any way, it’s just a good practice not to exercise sweeping generalizations if at all possible.
C. J you sound foolish. Her completing her youthfulness doesn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate her intelligence. There are plenty of comments appreciating her intelligence yet you choose to troll under the one comment pointing out how young she looks to have been a professor for a decade. Also I’ve seen folks comment the same under men who happen to look younger than what they are. It’s a very common compliment. You must be bored so take this crumb of attention and have a nice day.

This is such an important interview. I know so many older people too (like my 67 year old aunt) who are essential workers who can't afford to retire and have to put themselves in danger every day. Reopening the economy too soon is just gonna put those people in even more danger.

Covid 19 is horrible but it is opening peoples eyes to a lot going on right now. From black health inequality to racism against blacks in China. This needs to be an eye opener for specifically us so we can band together to demand reform and support our own in business. We need to be creating mutual funds for each other to start owning so we can break our way through and demand healthcare and better food.

The CDC final put numbers out nationwide. the percentage is = to the demographics of people. THE PRESS IS LYING AGAIN. which is why they switch out all the Chinese reporters and now show black people exclusively as Covid-19 victims and got black reporters behind the mic.
@@sydasipah4170 ALL these other ethnic groups have no empathy for Black Americans, and that includes all these other co-called "people of color" and other minorities. For over 400 years, Black people have appealed to white people's alleged "Christian values," morality, and sense of humanity. It's CLEAR they possess none of those qualities. What's even worse is when other ethnic groups get on board with whites, as if they have "honorary white status." When the pandemic hit the United States, Asians were reminded they DON'T have white or Asian privilege. Instead of all the other ethnic groups coming together in support of Black people, it's basically crickets. Black Americans have no allies, and are completely own their own.
@@cinnamonstar808 With regard to numbers, it’s obvious more whites are dying from COVID-19. However, the media's job is to transfer the narrative for the virus to Black Americans. The government wants an excuse to force "test vaccinations" on Black people. It's not far-fetched to consider the possibility that America is using a worldwide emergency to experiment and/or kill off Black Americans. It damn sure wouldn't be the first time - medical apartheid, Tuskegee Experiment, painful gynecology experiments on enslaved female Africans, the U.S. government spreading crack cocaine to Black neighborhoods, etc.

I think it's also worth discussing where the majority of black people live (The South) which is already an economically and socially disadvantaged area. While the case numbers aren't as high here as in the epicenters, the death rate across groups is shockingly high. As someone with statistics training its frustrating to see this not emphasized as a major confound.

I'm currently a student in a BSW program, where myself and a few of my peers are working on a mock proposal about the barriers of accessing services within A.A communities and we touch on some of these very important topics( quality of care, healthcare disparities and cultural competency) just to name a few. I work in equity (especially for academic hiring) at a major Canadian university’s faculty of medicine and girlllll I can absolutely 100000% vouch for what this Doctor is saying. I can say that (some) of the senior leaders are genuinely invested in EDI programs but the pipeline is weak and the majority of hires remain white men. It’s bandaid measures..
Thank you for posting this! I was in graduate school for public health and social work and was completely shocked by the lack of general cultural competence in the curriculum and anti-blackness expressed by the students and faculty.
In the UK black and minority ethnic groups are going from covid in disproportionately high numbers. Officials haven't given reasons yet.

I love this!!!! This is what my work is ALL about as a Prevention Coordinator. All of it is for nothing if we (public health professionals) are not backed by policies and structure needed to support a healthy black community. I was so mad that government officials had the nerve to be shocked at disproportionate #s of black and low income communities suffering from COVID. The research been out here!!!! They award block grants using that data!!!! It's not new. It's not shocking! And it most definitely sucks. Yes we can be healthier but not without a proper support system (ie. Social Determinants of Health). We need better paying jobs, grocery stores, health-care, and education. That is fact not opinion.
Also.. most hospitals make money via fee for service. Therefore there is no money to be made in prevention. Ie....they need sick people....

I'm a white woman working in retail. I had the pleasure of sitting in on a conference call a few days ago where our white male district manager told our *entirely* female and *mostly* black staff, in short, that our company will not be supporting us financially if we contract the virus while we're working directly with the public, making them money. To summarize, it's *our* fault if we get sick because they gave us a single box of disposable masks per store and we should be cleaning often enough to prevent getting sick. In March, there was a temporary policy allowing for 2 weeks of paid sick leave if we tested positive. Now that tests are more readily available and the country is reopening, they're pretending that policy never existed and emphasizing all the ways they can lay the blame on us. It's incredible. Truly sociopathic behavior.

Great to see these conversations continuing.....I recently posted a conversation with some healthcare workers on the impact Covid has had on uninsured/undocumented black and latinx communities for those interested in hearing from poltically minded healthcare workers.....
That's the problem - ALL that's being done is "conversation" with no concrete or effective changes to correct endemic issues in Black communities. Where are the SOLUTIONS? All other groups get stimulus packages, nice clinics, and great hospitals built right in their own neighborhoods. The government intentionally ignores Black areas, and has no intent on correcting structural and systemic racial health disparities among Black Americans. In the words of Kanye West (BEFORE he met the Kardashians) "America does not care about Black people." The U.S. government will NEVER fix the problem, and even the doctor giving the interview notes that the second anyone says something about the problem...then suddenly "it's a problem."
I’m not American. I and two generations who preceded me, had access to free universal healthcare. The health of each generation can impact the next. I just don’t understand why Americans are so resistant to universal health care. I may have to wait a little longer for some procedures, but should I need immediate surgery, I automatically get bumped to the front of the line.

@ Bobby Ainsworth I’m Canadian. Everyone who’s a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant has free health care for any doctor. You may pay for things like upgraded hospital rooms and elective cosmetic surgery. In fact, most Canadians are completely ignorant of the cost of doctors visits, surgery, or emergency room visits.
If a woman has worked 600 hrs prior to her delivery or adoption, she also gets one year of maternity leave PAID (2/3 of her salary) which can be stretched out over 18 months or split between herself and her partner. And her job MUST be secure for when she returns to work. Self employed women may not get maternity leave.
During COVID many people now qualify for $2,000/month for four months. Students will get $1,200/month for four months.
Its evident that u are not American cause if u did, u would know that ur statement is ignorant. Most Americans want universal healthcare.......
The problem is that america is not REALLY a democracy in reality
@@ertfgghhhh americans, white in particulary b/c they're the majority, do not want universal healthcare. if we did, we'd have it. all you have to do is tell people the government will take over health care (and take away your choices) and their taxes will go up. that'll be the end of that. people can vote in senators and congress people who can make it happen, but they don't.
There are systems and people in power in the US that are invested keeping the for profit healthcare industry in place. A large part of how they do that is by marketing against universal healthcare that convinces those who do have health insurance that by instituting universal healthcare, our care will be worse. That’s why many Americans aren’t in favor.

I don't trust anyone that doesn't look like me ..especially with regard to my kids. The power of racism flows through Institutions. I hate to see our people struggling because so much of it is self inflicted. Stop forging everyone, stop caring about other people's kids more than your own. Get savvy with the numbers. Black people have the strongest bodies they attack you with crappy foods loaded with sugar. The Haitians beat the French, British and Spaniards who fell sick. Henrietta Lacks magical DNA. Organ harvesters target black people. Why were black people chosen as slaves in the new world? Because no one else could work cotton, sugar or tobacco and survive. I do not trust the oligarchs of media and other institutions. This country is founded in exploitation not the relentless pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment. I love the ideal of this country but our actions as a nation do not support our ideologies.

The studies on how doctors tend to think black folks have higher pain thresholds or lie about their conditions make it smart to seek out physicians of a similar background. It's pathetic that anyone has to make that sort of consideration but when it comes to life and death, it's smart to take every advantage you can get.

I worked a summer in an Armed Forces Hospital. The staff was overworked then and that was 30 years ago. Tired people let biases bubble to the surface

Murchison personally I think you want to find the best doctor possible for yourself and your kids sometimes they can look like you, but I think that’s also racism to assume that someone who looks like you will take care of you best, there are some people of the same race who can exploit or feed into the same racism of the dominant culture, it really is hard to know for sure who will be great until you start working with them and then understanding the complexities of the healthcare system, if you have a doctor that respects you and hears your concerns and breaks things down so you can understand and know what’s going on and doesn’t just throw prescriptions in your face that turn out to be ineffective then that’s great

Did you hear our own black doctor said the system tries to suppress or push them out of the system when they try to care for the ‘people that look like her(black) and give them optimal care’?? They cannot make significant progress in caring for their own people with autonomy. I am a registered nurse and I allude with her position. She pretty much will fire you if you stick up for your own people or try to speak up for the ‘heaLthcare injustice’ that they face? It’s not more black healthcare workers we need, we need healthcare facilities owned by our people who understand and care about our specific healthcare needs.Our black celebrities and affluents need to invest in healthcare of our people and not just clothing, brands, entertainment companies etc.

My partner is afraid to go to work as well as well as many of his co workers. It’s so sad. He’s in the hospital around covid all day everyday and still they lack proper ppe. Imo it’ll do more harm than good to open up the economy right now. We’ll go back to square 1 and the death toll will rise back up quickly.
Meanwhile...states are reopening non-essential businesses, and racists are on the capitol steps protesting for their "freedom" to runaround and infect the rest of America.

First of all, Dr. Blackstock seems really amazing and I like her insight. Her experiences reflect a lot mine and my friends as well. There are lots of barriers for people of color, in nursing as well especially for black and brown folks. At my accelerated nurse practitioner program at an ivy league school, it seemed pretty clear we were a "count" for diversity, but there weren't any programs or offices to support minority students currently, even though they had a program in the 70's that ended because the administration (mostly white women) didn't consider it an issue anymore. Financially, half of the scholarships would go towards low income folks, and the other half toward men, which ended up predominantly being white men b/c there's not men in nursing. So as minority POC students, we were constantly asking administration to create the space and resources for students who have had barriers to higher education, but it wasn't until the school as a whole grabbed national headlines for multiple racist incidents did they they finally start even getting more faculty of color. We finally established an office for student of color and LGBTQ students, but it was literally a part time job on top of our crazy curriculum. I heard from incoming students they're happy a space exists now, but I would never go back.

Shoutout to all my fellow front line workers ❤️. We are making less money than those sitting at home and it’s upsetting frankly. I really hope we get hazard pay soon so we can all make an equal amount. I do happen to be a white health care worker but a lot of the people I work with are Black, Hispanic and Asian. I’m not a CNA but the CNAs in particular are some of the hardest workers and are so susceptible. They are doing the ‘grunt work’ for like $17 dollars an hour. (NYC here).

I just finished up my degree in biological anthropology and we covered this in my class on human growth and development. I study early life stress and the impact it has on later life, such as metabolic disorders and immunocompetence, and the unfortunate fact is that so many of the poor health outcomes we see today in black communities are at least partially due to racism having an impact on early life stress, through low birth weights, poor nutrition access, etc. discrimination is why black populations have higher infant mortality, lower birth weights, and higher rates of metabolic disorders and hypertension. these health disparities don't have to be real, but they're socially maintained by an oppressive system. thank you for the very informative video- i'm new to your channel, but am subscribed now for your great insight!

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but I literally just searched my UA-cam history for all of the videos that you've watched because I wanted to go back and write down the various books and authors you've mentioned in your videos.
My history came back with a bunch of Pop culture stuff that I've watched from you, which is fine but I thought it was weird because I definitely watched more videos than that. Hardly of your interviews was even on there.
