How I prune my Blackcurrant bushes

- Its time to prune Blackcurrants (and take cuttings if you want to increase your stock).
In general, you remove up to a third of the older wood which can be identified by its darker colour.
annual pruning helps maintain the vigour of the bush and fruit bearing capacity.

Nice upload, Woody. Beautiful blue sky.
I use to prune my currant bushes in february/march. The black currant cuttings smells like nothing else.
Have a productive week on your plot and keep warm my friend.
Thanks Benni, we've had a nice spell of good weather, but it is changing back to rain.
Have a great week ahead my friend 👍🤗
That’s come at a great time Woody. Just picked up 2 young blackcurrant bushes today! I’ve saved your video for when they need pruning 😊🌱
That's great to hear, thanks Kelly 👍
Wow this is totally a new experience for me as we live in Dubai and we don’t have any bushes but in summer holiday we go to London where we go to farm pick own cranberries and all berries, never thought they have to trim the bushes.
I think this is a right place for me to see different amazing things.
Waiting for more videos
Hey my new friend, thank you for your very kind comments.
Truly appreciated! 👍

Thank you

prune bushes thanks for sharing im here to return the blessing my friend
Thanks so much 😀
Blessings to you ❤️
Thanks Woody. Those Felco secateurs are awesome. I watched Cliff at Castle Hill Gardens demonstrate how to disassemble and clean them. Fortunately he also showed us how to put them back together again (he's a pro...). 😂🤣😃
There's a local shop that sells them here & THEY'RE ON MY CHRISTMAS LIST (I'm shouting just in case Santa's in the vicinity...).
Hi Marie, yes those Felco's are over twenty years old and were probably one of the best presents I ever had!
I've just had to replace the cutting blade in that time as the original got worn down with use :-)
you can't go wrong with Felco's.
have a great week ahead my friend :-)
Good information Woody. Thanks for the Fall garden chat.
Rob
Thanks Rob, you're welcome my friend :-)
These are good tutorials Woody. I have used a different one of yours before for this specific task and I can tell you now, it was handy to have. Cheers mate 🍺
Cheers Willie - all the best mate!
Very clear and useful information as always, Woody. Thanks, mate.
Cheers Mike 👍
Nice view to start the day what more could you ask, think I need to get all my bushes cut back a bit. Cheers
Cheers mate, it keeps them healthy and productive 👍🍺
Nice upload
Stay connected
thank you, I will :-)
Great video thanks Woody
Thanks Brett, that's great feedback mate 👍
We haven’t had a blue sky since August. It would be wonderful to see one again.
Oh my word, that's a long time without seeing a blue sky :-(
hope you get one soon friend!
I hope so too. It seemed to have started that way this morning. Just as quick as it came it went before I could see it. We also had a good snow day before yesterday. Perhaps I should do a video on Alaskan winters. God Bless
Cheers Woody excellent tutorial and great information, must do mine at the weekend.
🍁Happy Gardening........🍂Terry King 🍁
Thank you Terry, have a great weekend on the plot (weather permitting!)

@@cumbrianhomestead 👍😁
I can't wait for the day that my black currant is big enough to prune.
How old is it Tim?
@@cumbrianhomestead I guess it would be 3. Sand is not a good growing medium.
Very interesting! Here innthe Philippines, we only have the frozen or the dried ones and they cost a lot!
If only I could export them there LOL 😁
Thanks very much for your interest, have a great day 👍
@@cumbrianhomestead why not! Have a great day too!
Nice Video.. Subscribed your channel. Thanks
Thanks very much!
Lovely to have your support 👍
Hello my friend
Hello - how are you?
MMm that reminds me lol I need to get a new chipper too I killed the Bosch...
Yeah, it'll be worth it mate, all the prunings were put through the chipper and onto the compost pile.
Cheers mate 👍🍺
Good info Woody. I only have small 2 year old current bushes. When should I start pruning thanks.
Hi Greta, sounds like you won't need to do any pruning until end of next years season - of course there will be variables - just try and assess how much old wood is present versus one or two year old wood.
hope that helps my friend.
Woody
Thanks so much!
I was just doing some research on currants. Do you know they were banned in the US for the longest time? Apparently they considered it a threat to the logging industry. 🙄😆
Hi Guys, no I'd no idea about that at all - why would they consider it a threat (unless they suspected it carried some sort of disease that affects trees or something???)
fascinating stuff!
Nice video! Thanks for sharing. subscriber 930
Blue winter skies in the Lake District, what is not to like! Perhaps you could help me? You mentioned you use Falco Number 8s, I am very confused about the Falco range, and need a good pair of secateurs (for Christmas ;-) ). Can you tell me why you chose the #8s, and / or can you give me an idea of what the differences are between all of them? I noted your previous reply to one of my questions and I am waiting to 'pounce' on my donor apple for scion wood in Feb! (Making use of baby bel wax ;-) )
Hello Gordon, nice to hear from you.
The Felco's were a present so not really my 'choice', however a quick google search shows that number 7+8 models are the top of the Felco range and just have different handles - others are designed for left handed use or have a longer blade for two handed use, then there is an 'anvil' design felco pruner. IMO i'm entirely happy with my number 8 and have only had to replace the cutting blade in 20 years.
hope that helps :-)
kind regards
Woody
@@cumbrianhomestead My thanks for your reply, it is very helpful.
Areet.is it really important to prune bushes and will that work for redcurrents and gooseberry bushes too?
eh up mucka!
yeah, all soft fruit bushes benefit from pruning - however redcurrants are pruned differently (the same as gooseberries) I've a video going up at weekend that shows the difference between unpruned and pruned - but I have a longer one I did last year (see playlist) that show how t prune Gooseberries in detail.
Basically, on redcurrants and gooseberry, you are pruning back new side growths to 1-3 buds, these will form fruit spurs the next year or the year after (so they fruit on older wood as opposed to blackcurrant).
Hope that is helpful my friend :-)
@@cumbrianhomestead Aye it's a good job I asked otherwise I would of copied that video and wrecked them no doubt.😂👍
