I hated my pelo Afro growing up because I would hear my relatives say pelo bueno/good hair is loose curly/wavy hair. I wanted pin straight black hair or at least loose long curly hair like my grandmother & great-grandmother. I noticed that Caribbean grandmother's like to look at their newborn granddaugther's hair to see if they'll have good hair or bad hair. That makes me cringe so much.

I am African American and I have natural hair. The struggle is real especially within our community because you’re deemed not beautiful for not having straight long hair or for not having hair like other ethnicities. Took a long time to love my hair.
yeah, I watch Chris Rock's documentary and he exposed these issues to a global audience. Many black women are insecure of their curly/afro hair texture because long, straight hair has been perceived as the most beautiful type of hair.
I have 3c/4a hair but growing up it was always straightened. I never got a relaxer but when my hair was blowdryed and flatironed it layed as if I did get a relaxer. I just always remember feeling so pretty and I was always complimented on my hair by my peers. When my hair was curly I never wanted anyone to see it. I remember telling new beauticians "warning: my hair is a hot mess when you wet it". And when I finished getting it done I would run to social media and post about have "white girl hair". Now I realize how fortunate I was to be able to grow and love my hair without having some of the emotional and physical scars other little black girls had to deal with. I preach self acceptance and when my 80 year old grandmother makes remarks about my sisters "nappy hair" I explain to her that our hair is beautiful straightened and unstraightened. I still get my hair pressed but after a fiasco where my mother heat damaged my hair, I only get it pressed once a month. I have regrown my hair a restored it back to health with the help of my beautician so Now it is currently at bsl. I was recently caught in the rain so I'm going to be wearing my natural curls until it's time for my next appointment. Seeing myself with my curls after having my hair straight for so long made me feel so good. My new sense of self appreciation has made me see my natural hair in a whole new light. I encourage girls with any level of curly hair to be proud and rock what you have. I also believe that we as minority women have the right to choose what we do with our hair so if you want a weave or a relaxer do what makes you happy as long as no one is forcing you.
It's sad that so many people are ashamed of their natural hair. When i was a kid i used to have lots of beautiful curls and my hair was super long and big and it made me happy. But in middle school my classmates started to tease me because of it (they said it looked like a broccoli and i was like ???? okay?????) and i started hating it. I changed schools for high school and everyone liked my curls but i hated them. Then, the "quinceañera season" started and i straightened it almost every weekend for a year or two. It was completely ruined, but i was happy because i finally got rid of my curls. Two years ago i got tired of that and chopped it off myself to shoulder length, and last year i decided to go for a pixie cut. Now my hair is growing again, super curly, and i am loving it. It took a lot of damage for me to start loving what came out of my scalp, but i finally did it and i'm happy 💖
Curly hair is just too amazing.. Your curls are never the same, sometimes they're tighter, sometimes it's looser.. you can rock so many beautiful hairstyles! I am Dominican and I have curly hair. For so many years society made me feel as if I needed to straighten it in order to look "groomed"... Going to work with curly hair would be considered as if I wasn't presentable.
I came to realize that in my home country many don't want to accept who they are and care way too much about skin color and looks... they are racist against their own race.
It is an insult to be called black, and the lighter shade your skin is gives you more "status". Also, comparing to other countries, they make a huge deal about dressing up too excessively when going out, or wearing too much make up even to a casual occasion... this used to put so much unnecessary stress on me...
There was and is a lot of self loathing in this..Another one is as a woman of dark skin trying to have a lighter skinned child ..so that this child will face less discrimination in life...the concept of ..: Mejorar la raza...sad but still happening.
my son is latino mixed and has much different textured hair than me and my husband, we both have wavy thick hair but my sons is very coarse and tight curls (which my brother has also). We have made sure not to make him feel bad because his hair is different to ours. We had to learn products and different styling routines to help his hair but it was worth it so he doesn't grow up with the idea his hair is bad.

ok i gonna say it in spanish: aquí en dominicana siempre miran mal al hecho de que decidas dejar tu pelo rizo, de hecho yo solía tener él pelo rizado e iba con ellos suelto al colegio al igual que mi hermana y por nosotras ellos prohibieron esa "clase de peinado" y tuve que usar desrizado (una permanente) mientras que las chicas que tenían él pero lacio natural podían ir con su pelo suelto sin problema
lo mismo pasa en la escuela de mi hermana menor muchas chicas quieren tener su pelo natural y no las dejan por que dicen que "eso es una moda" lo que es estúpido por que es con el pelo que nacieron, moda es que lo cambien.

I feel like people just want what they don't have/see. Everyone in DR has "pelo malo" and hardly anyone has naturally straight hair so they're always getting it straightened. Growing up in a white neighborhood, you don't see many people with curly (not natural hair curly) hair and I always wanted that. I learned to appreciate any type of hair tho. I had a Dominican boyfriend who had "pelo bueno" but it was still curly, I liked it

I was shocked to find that their beautiful hair is considered "bad hair" by some. To me bad hair is hair that is overly bleached or chemically processed to the point where it's so damaged it's unkept but nothing to do with their natural hair

I remember people use to stare at a person with Afro hair back in my country and they would call that person the "spongy hair" and compare it to the sponges we clean plates with, they would literately laugh. Seeing this reminds me how upsetting it must of made that person feel :(
This right here is how I feel when my friends with pin straight hair describe my hair in ways like that and try to say that’s how it is though and it’s okay to talk about it like that. I’m like no when I was younger bullies would target my hair and use words and phrases like that in a demeaning way. It is not okay. I’m glad to know it doesn’t just happen here in the US.

I went natural 7 years ago and have never thought to go back. Our hair is gorgeous! My sister has always had this super long, very loose curls and my hair is thicker, but it's okay. Since I went natural, my hair is almost the same length as hers.

everyone wants what they don't have. afro people relaxing their hair, straight haired people getting perms and such, blondes going brunette and vice versa... there's always gonna be people who don't like what your hair looks like and that's ok. Just like there's always gonna be people who LOVE how your hair looks and thats ok too. If you want to defy percieved social norms with your hair, that's ok. Likewise, if you want to follow social norms and do you hair according to them, that is also just as valid.

In my family having curly/wavy hair is considered better than straight hair because curly hair is seen as a sign of having European blood and straight hair indicates signs of indigenous blood. Idk why but I just remember my dad saying that because I hated my wavy hair and would straighten it every day in high school.

I am from Cuba and started getting my hair straight at 12years old and stopped doing it at 18. My family used to tell me It will look beautiful straight. Even going to Cuban hairdresser they tried to put keratin on my hair to make it “ easy to handle”. It happened to me like 5 times with 5 different ladies in Cuba and in United States. It’s sad that some families teach you to don’t like your natural hair.

I’ve just heard her story on Duolingo podcast I’m so touched by her experience , I’m not latino but I have 4c textured hair and have been very self conscious of my hair during school , and had the same experiences! After high school I did the big chop and I loved it and it does take a long time to accept it for me but I love it now and I’ll rock and Afro and a wig!

Wow. As an American born black woman, with parents from Panamá I was fortunate to have a mother who instilled value in me for exactly who I am. Black beauty was embraced. I've been wearing my natural hair (without any chemicals nor straighteners) since around 1993. No hay "Pelo Malo." There is no such thing as "bad hair" as long as the hair is clean and well kept.
This is true. I have curly hair as well and I remember not liking my hair while I was in middle school and high school. I didn't know what to do with it. So, I would put so much gel and other days I would straighten it. Now I'm in college and I just put a little leave in conditioner and I love my hair! I even get compliments on my hair once in awhile.

My mom and grandma always loved my curls. They always did my hair and treated me with the upmost delicacy and always taught me how to care for it bc it was so curly and thick. When I'd straighten it they'd always tell me they missed my beautiful curls. and growing up everyone thought my hair was fake bc of the ringlet curls I had in pigtails or buns and ponytails

Oh do I understand this. I remember in HS I was nominated against a girl with straight silky hair for prettiest hair. Guess who won .... The one whos hair looked like everyoneone elses. It has taken a LOT of healing and self loving to embrace me. I refuse to straighten my HAIR because I knew that somehow that meant denying who I am. Thank the LORD God sent me a husband who adores my looks and treats me as a rare piece of GOLD because when we were growing up I looked like NO BODY. Now I have kids FULL OF CURLY AFRO hair who get stopped everywhere we go to be told HOW GORGEOUS THEY ARE. THANK God times have changed. Thank you for this awesome VIDEO.

I don't have super curly hair, but I do have a lot of volume and wave to it, growing up I was the only kid in my family in my with my type hair, so my mom didn't know how to take care of it because she had straight hair, and growing up I straightened it so much thinking that was the only hairstyle that would make me look pretty, and my mom told me once that if I was going out then I should straighten my hair, but I've come a long way from that and have learned to love my hair for what it is, and I'm trying to take care of it, thanks for this video, I hope it can help someone out there

Watching this video really makes me think about the fact that I always felt like my hair was wrong b/c I'd been getting straightened since age 5. For the longest time I detested my hair texture, but in the last several years I've grown to like having it natural and just embracing my curls. If anyone ever tells someone they have "pelo malo", it's more an insult than it is a help to them. If people want to embrace their hair, let them.

My mom would always tell me "you look like a witch" or "por qué tú no te peinas el pelo, se te be feo" so i would straighten my hair so i could feel pretty but for almost 2 years now I've been learning to love my curly hair... now I love my hair so much ❤️
I am an African American sister from NYC. Worked in the Heights for a decade. Whitewashing is as prevelant in the Latino ciommunity as it is in ours. When everything pretty is opposite of what you are, you internalize tht YOU are not pretty. While thi is total BS, we have to learn to love and appreciate our melanin, our curls/kinks, and our volumptious figures. God made NO MISTAKE>
my mom refused to cut my hair even to the point where it was dry and damaged I eventually had to go behind her back and have my dad take me to get it cut and I felt so free it was to my ears and a huge fro it gave me a personality in high school and to this day I keep it the same way

when i was little I hated my curly hair omg. when i got a bit older it’s as if the Afro just got bigger and bigger and harder to brush, harder to tie into a bun. my buns were hEAVY. they hurt so much with all the hair. I even cut a big chunk of my hair and tried hiding it under my hid so my parents don’t see when I was 7. but my mom hit me with the sandal and told me that my hair is beautiful loll. i used to be so sad when people said my hair looked “messy” and too big. but i’m trying to embrace that now. :)

There’s nothing wrong with fizzy hair. Most people with curly hair have hair that grows out frizzy. It’s another European beauty standard to desire having curls without frizz.

I'm Southeast Asian with poker straight hair 😂😝. I guess maintenance and it being the "standard" for "good hair" gave me an easier time in life, but ever since I was a kid I've always been enthralled with hair that was more textured. I absolutely loved the hair on Julissa and Maya and the lion-haired girl 😁. I've always wanted hair like that on myself. Though in recent years, learning about how much time, money, and care goes into maintenance has made me go "Nuuuuuuuuuhpe! 😭". Though it is solely for that reason. Major, MAJOR props to all of y'all who have "pelo malo" and an extra, extra KUDOS to the ones who go the super miles it takes to have it looking and feeling its best XD. It's ridiculous and sad how some things are so forced and some things reviled huh 😒😞.
I love my curly hair, but sometimes I straighten it. Friends and family always ask why and say it is pretty curly and there isn't a need to straighten it. My response is... having my hair natural or straight is just like if I were to braid it or put it in a ponytail. It is just a style but I am not insecure about my natural hair at all. I think all hair is awesome and IDK why such a simple thing like hair has to be shunned upon
