- A family statement says Peart died Tuesday after battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, for more than three years. Lindsay Dunn with his enduring impact and influence on the music world.
This has been the worst death outside of my family I’ve ever felt in my life. I’m 33 and my dad definitely played Rush when I was in my crib
I feel the same way! Hardest death outside my family... he meant the world to me
I didn't know he was sick. I, like millions of other fans, was hoping Neil came out of retirement.
His retirement from playing certainly makes sense now.
Man, this sucks so bad.
Arghhh
R I P.
I'm 56 and loved Rush since I was 14, this is like losing someone close. So hard.
Dan Moreno yeah it is a band from my youth for sure. I feel ya buddy.
Same here. This one really hurt. Rush was my Beatles
This one hurts R.I.P. Neil Peart
Like no other. 1 of a kind. God broke the mold after Neil.
Indeed it does hurt, I shed a tear or six and don't usually
I love that man and his band.
You are right THIS HURTS .This is a big loss
This is terrible,what loss
He lost his daughter then lost his wife. He found love again and then was taken at to young an age.He was a master of his craft but he never sought fame. He just love playing the drums. RIP Neil Peart.
And helped with his art and books those who were lost in bed times in their lives. He saved so many people from hopelessness. I could start a new life because I healed with the music of RUSH his books and interviews. Thank you and keep your memory in our souls.
As we all know, the song Limelight, was based on that premise.
Too young.
MRMR when I was young I thought he had 3 arms. A great musician. If you listen to Rush and ZZ Top and the like through the drums they sound even better. Peart was the master
Devastated. Gutted. Heartbroken.
Cambro64 I hear ya brother. I wanna wake up tomorrow and this all be a bad dream.
@William Wells same
He is the reason I picked up a pair of stick's. He is/was my idol.
William Wells : Yeah, me too. Every time a friend sends me his condolences I start to cry.
Yes, me too. I will always remember him.... Heaven just received a wonderful soul, rest well Neil... we miss you so much.
This caught me by surprise and hurts badly. Sadly, Neil is no longer with us, but his music is. Rest in peace.
It caught everyone by surprise
The best there is, the best there was, the best there will ever be.
You can't say that, there was someone better and there will be someone better. And that's with no disrespect, since I'm a huge Peart fan, r.i.p
@@IvefoundthetruthonMay There has been no one better and I'm 57
@@TheCanuck1962 Ever heard of Gavin Harrison?
I think Aric Improta is helping to carry the torch. He’s not as well known now, but he may go down as one of the greatest rock drummers. His band Night Verses is really cool and displays his skills constantly. He also has the forty-minute drum solo “Blur - The Lights in the Videodrome.” I wish his more famous band FEVER 333 would let him shine outside of live settings. Still, he’s no slouch at live shows for either band.
Obviously, no one person can replace Neil. I’m just saying that others are helping to keep the craft alive. Neil’s influence will be felt for years to come.
I agree. But it's just an opinion.
"Learning that we're only immortal for a limited time."
--Neal Peart (Dreamline)
They don’t make bands like Rush anymore,..R.I.P. Neil “the professor” Peart.
Rush was one in a million. There will never be another Rush.
Lot sof satanist souyt there for sure.
RUSH is/was a unique band...I don't think any group ever tried to step into their shadow.
still slowly sinking in, very hard to accept. these guys got me through my difficult teens, like medicine for the soul. Neil was inspiring!
My legs wanted to give out on me when I got the news this afternoon. This one hurts indeed! Your marathon is over Professor, you can rest now 😪
Beautifully said man..
Man was he loved or what...made me proud to be Canadian
@Untrepid One I was in a hospital waiting room and just happened to open Facebook. The first thing I saw was this unexpected, devastating news. I had to put on a happy face when the receptionist got to me. Been in a trance ever since.
Don't forget his lyrics. Just as good as his drumming.
I would argue better
@William Wells Hopefully a light will be shined on that.
"Vital Signs" changed me. It means the world to me still.
JuJu Pancakes My favorite song from Moving Pictures!
In my very humble opinion even better. His lyrics were my surrogate parents when I was growing up.
@William Wells " The Garden" from Clockwork Angles IS Neil's most profound lyrical composition and the music Geddy and Alex wrote to compliment those verses are EARTH moving stuff. I cannot keep from crying while watching and listening to their LIVE performance video, IT IS truly a manifesto of our inner-self.....
To watch Neil Peart drumming live was the definition of being blown away. His talent, musicianship, showmanship, creativity and longevity in the music business are second to none.
I can remember way back, showing a friend who hadnt heard Rush, a pic of Neils drums. He thought it was gimmicky...All for show...until he heard him play!
If drums were compared to vocabulary, Neil was the most well spoken person on the planet! Incredible talent!
RIP Neil.
Just thumbing through the news and came across this. Oh man what a shock! I just CANNOT believe it. Like so many others, I never even knew he was sick. Now he is not in anymore pain. Rest In Peace our dear friend. I cannot say anymore. I am just in a complete and total haze. This will take a while to ingest. Thanks again for the plethora of music you left us with! Randy. Troy, Mo
Jesus Im having a hard time with this one guys, I'm devastated.
Honestly, yea.
I'm surprised how deeply this hurts. His retirement was sad, but he's truly gone now. I hope Alex, Geddy, and Neil's family know they're not alone in their grief. We ALL feel the loss.
Same here😪
You are not alone. Every dude I've talked to confesses to shedding tears in the past couple of days. I bawled like a kid losing a puppy here yesterday morning. Neil's playing and lyrics impacted so many of us, so deeply.
I thought I was finally over it. Went all day long, til I get to UA-cam & try to watch an old interview, but had to stop it & equalize myself. Any of you fellas surprised by how his passing's affected you? No surprise I'm sad, but never thought I'd become so perforated for it. Last time I was this bad was the death of a pet I'd had 14 years. Most blood kin of mine likely pales in comparison, but the works of NP have been in my day to day life, while not so much on the other.
Isn’t it great to be touched by people like him. He’s a million miles away yet right beside you.
I love this guy like my own father. It’s been the toughest grieving process that I have been through. This tragic news pushed Rush to the top of my music mountain forever.
That's what my dad died from. Doctors told us almost everyone diagnosed with GBM has about 15 months at the most. RIP Neal...miss you dad.
God be with you!
I grow up on rush and I am not that old
I will miss him so much
this one hurts alot
R.I.P. Neil Peart
Katie Gus Listening to Rush puts you on a journey, and when you get to wherever it may be, you know you’re in the right place.
The Don is innocent “The point of a journey, is not to arrive. Anything can happen”... 🙂
SoCalSandman780 First Rush song I ever heard 👍, that’s what started my journey. So glad to have shared a part of it with one of the greatest drummers of all time.
The news of Neil's death hit me like a frickin' sledgehammer! I was completely devistated and saddened because it was so unexpected! R.I.P, Professor! You will always remain in the hearts and minds of all of us Rush fans! Be free and Godspeed!
I can scarcely believe the news. I felt like the wind was knocked out of me. Neil’s books gave me much help dealing with grief when I lost my dad a few ago. His drumming inspired me too as a young musician. The world is a significantly sadder place without his musical and literary mastery. Rest In Peace.
The best drummer ever to wield sticks .. He was the gold standard of drummers and All aspiring drummers knew of Master Neil
I loved Neil but Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer ever.
@@scottconnatser4626 this isn't a debate!! It's a tribute to a very outstanding humble drummer who inspired millions of drummers!!!!
@@ultrahighgain412 In terms of pure technique, Buddy was the best, although maybe guys like Jojo Mayer and Thomas Lang have caught up or even surpassed him in certain areas. You're putting words in the other guy's mouth when you turn it into a style debate.
@@scottconnatser4626 i've been playing since i was 5.. i'm now 53 Neil is in My top 5 favorites BUT UR correct Buddy was unreal for His time period! You can hear the influence that He had on a lot of famous rock drummers back in the 60's-80's
Neil was so humble that he would tell people that he hit things with sticks for a living. Truly a class act.
As long as I live, I will remember exactly when and where I was when I heard of Neil Peart's passing. RIP you touched millions of lives with your awesomeness!
BILLIONS
They really need to teach kids how to pronounce Peart in school.
Ear...with a P and a T
I was thinking the same...his name is not Purt. I was watching the Rock and Roll HOF induction and I cringed listening to Taylor Hawkings mispronounce Neils name while he was sitting right there in the audience.
@@billbarton63 Taylor Hawkings was a friend of Neil's. I think he heard his name mispronounced so many times (as we all have) maybe it just slipped out that way.
Chie Chie Rodrigueeze
padistedor I understand he knew him which made it more cringe-worthy that he kept saying it over and over.
Sad news. Neils had some heartbreak in his life. As fans we felt a bit of his pain too. Sad that he has left this world. I truly hope he is reunited with his wife and daughter.
The man had so much intellect, wisdom and humor.
Obviously, he will be greatly missed.
Rip to one of , maybe the greatest.
Safe journeys...
so sad !!! I'm from México and we love Rush !!! thanks Mr. Neil we love you so much !!!
This band was all "our" band, personally & figuratively. They meant so much to the individual. They offered something for all of the music world. Diversity, never heard them put down other talent, if anything I believe they extended a hand to help others expand. I will truly miss you PROFESSOR. GOD bless the body of music, and remaining friends, members etc.
36 years of my life absolutely devoted to this band. Cannot believe this has come to pass. I thought/hoped I had many years before I had to say goodbye to any of them. This man has helped me in many ways. He taught me a lot of ten dollar words. His integrity has helped me to hold my own to a higher standard. He has shown me that perfect is doable. I fight tears for an enigmatic man who I’ve never actually met. May God bless his wife Carrie and his young daughter Olivia who he was gifted a second chance at life with. RIP to a hero of many. Your life will be sorely missed.
He was truly an inspiration to a lot of people. One of the reasons i started playing drums. Glad i got to see him live. We are gonna miss you Mr. Peart. Rest in peace.
There will never be another like Neil. R.I.P. and thank you for decades of amazing music!
I was in a Thai restaurant when I heard the news, I couldn't stop crying. Speechless and nothing more to say.
ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS EVER!!! R.I.P Can not wait for the shows in Heaven❤
The loss of Neil hurts like few other musicians in my life. He will always be the Greatest of all Time. God Bless Neil's family and the Rush family.
There will never be another one like him. Truly one of a kind. He's always been and will always be my favorite drummer of all time. Rush's music helped me get through my teenage years all throughout the early to mid 1980's.
i totally agree with you on that seen Rush 15 time's first concert was Farewell to kings I'm now 56 year's old remember bumping in to Geddy Lee downtown Vancouver the morning after the moving pictures tour i made him laugh i followed behind him and said are you Geddy Lee even though i knew it was him and he replied yes I am and I said wow what a Rush and I got a laugh and smile and a short 5 min conversation with him and he said well i got to get going meeting Neil and Alex in Edmonton tonight memories I'll never forget
same!, I'm 53 and they were there for me during those awkward years.
It is weird as I have been reflecting on my past and realized how much Neil helped me through so much of those painful teenage years......This is just way too soon.
The only quote I put in my Senior Year book was Hemispheres..."....with our hearts and minds United in a single perfect sphere"😥
@@by-torandthesnowdog1647 Wow I'm jealous mwaah 😍
I cried and am still crying now. RUSH has been a part of my life since the late 70s and Neil was ALWAYS, from day 1, the GREATEST DRUMMER ON EARTH. RIP my friend and THANK YOU.
R.I.P Neil, you were definitely one of the best drummers of all time.
This is a absolute huge loss 😢!!! Rest in peace brother
This makes me hate the music in 2020 even more. Rock needs to be central to our culture again
I would hate today's music even more, but that's not physically possible ;-)
The music industry has been a wasteland for 20 years with exception of those Rush albums in this time.
Edward Bliss Fortunately we are left with these songs. So all is good. Listen on brother.
Rest In Peace Neil. You will always be remembered, never forgotten. Your music lives on
It's been three days since we've heard of Niel Pearts' passing, and I still can't hold the tears back...
A very sad day for me and the millions of people he inspired to play drums and think about the deeper meanings of life. May your soul travel well Neil Peart. 🙂❤️🙏

I feel as if I have lost a brother. The man that inspired my 40+ year behind a drum kit. At 57 I had to retire for the same reason as Neil. The joints took a beating over the years. I will forever be grateful for the music you shared with us. I will never forget our chance meeting while out riding my motorcycle. Knowing you were such a privacy loving guy. I quietly said "rock on and ride safe" You smiled and said " You also, thank you" My heart is hurting. knowing you are gone. RIP
Yes, I shed a tear.........Thank You Neil, you have forever blessed us with your talents and personality..
Not only was he an AMAZING drummer. But he was also an equally AMAZING lyricist.
The world lost a legend this week.... Thank you Neil for bring so much joy to us. Thank you for all the joy you brought me... I will miss you...
The world of music will never be the same! May Neal Peart live on forever in heaven & in the music that Rush gave us! May the greatest drummer in the world rest in peace! Rock on, Neal!🤘🇺🇸
So devastated I don't even care if his name is mispronounced anymore...
I think its disrespectful
@@randyhooks1214 I agree and it usually pisses me off I'm just a zombie right now
@@TheLovelyRushka yeah
Kind of numb. Most times musicians leaving us doesn't affect me but Rush is different. Geddy Lee is the reason I started playing bass. And each member was a master at their instrument. All are on the top three ever. And I dont limit it to rock. For drums I include Buddy Rich and guitar I add Roy Clark and Andrea Segovia.
Susan Sexton yes I get annoyed that people (especially reporters!) that fail to pronounce his name properly. The man deserves the respect, God knows he’s earned it. As Geddy once said in an interview, “it’s pronounced like ‘ear’ except with a P at the front and a T at the end.” The man was known all over the world, I would think that getting his name right wouldn’t be too difficult. RIP Neil. 😭😢
Yeah, you would think a 'professional' from City News Toronto (Rush hometown) would show a tiny bit of respect and ask one of his thousands of fans how to correctly pronounce his name when reading his obituary. Alas
I'm 56 years old and have listening to Neil most all of my life. He has accomplished so much. He has single handedly been such an influential part of my life. I'm also a drummer I have held him in such reverence that I wouldn't even try to play his music. Mainly because I'm not worthy. May God be holding you tight Neil. Rock on Neil.😃😭
As someone else said, this is the worst hurt outside of losing close family. 😢
World drumming legend, world class among the best: Neil Peart. RIP.
R I P Neil . Greatest Rock Drummer as far as I'm concerned, Glad to have seen Rush many times in Upstate New York . Over many years..
Who remembers the last time a member of a band garnered so much love and praise from their death? Me neither. Tribute to how great a musician and person he was. RIP Neil.
For me there have been a few , Levon Helm, Freddie Mercury, Glenn Frey, David Bowie although I don't associate him with a band but his passing seems like it was yesterday.
I forgot to mention the real tragedy of the Brothers Gibb, only one of the four brothers is alive . Different music for sure but they were unique in their own way and very talented, three deaths from a family all at different times, two were sudden , one was another cancer victim. The one remaining did what they always did, he's still making music.
Truly heartbreaking 💔..Peart was DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS EVER! R.I.P. Neil..KEEP ROCKIN ON IN HEAVEN!
Rest In Peace Neil, you were one of a kind!
I am so grateful to have been able to see Rush in concert five times over the years. Best drummer I’ve ever seen
Good human as well
My favorite drummer in my favorite band. Neil really inspired so many with his creativity. My condolences to his friends and family.
Neil Peart will continue to live on through his music.🥁🎵
This one actually really got me in the feels. That man had one incredible mind and talent.
A gentleman, scholar, legendary musician. And represented Canada so well. Gutted.
So sad, but blessed to have been influenced by this legendary drummer and lived in the same age that he ruled the drum world!
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Im just devastated .....I dont think my brain totally processed this information yet ...
But im out of words right now im numb.

I've been crying off and on all afternoon and evening. I just feel annihilated. 😔🌌🌠
Same... Rush has been my favorite band since I was a teenager... Neil was my hero and the reason I love drums and music overall...
Me too, for a week or better now.....
Me as well... this is one of the hardest loses.
God bless Neil and family. Loving RUSH for over 41 years. 3 musical geniuses. So sorry for your loss Alex and Geddy. My heart is so so sad.
The end of music. Can't find words and I don't think I ever will. Thank you Canada
This one feels like losing a friend. Aside from his incredible drumming, his thoughtful, humanistic lyrics helped shape my outlook on life. Rest easy, Ghost Rider. "The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect."
1st Rush concert Grace Under Pressure.... miss him terribly and find myself weeping over his passing. This one hurts so much... he was a true champion for those who feel left out. The kid in Subdivision was me in high school... and Rush is the reason why I wanted to play music. Rest in Peace Neil... you are loved, always.

In denial right now. His drumming and his lyrics were so powerful. He will be missed by many R.I.P. Neil Peart the Professor on the Drum Kit.
I first saw Rush on their 1979 Hemispheres Tour (UK) and every tour they did here thereafter. Best live band you'll ever see and those guys worked their tails off every show and never took their audience for granted or as a given. I never met them of course but this really hurts. RIP Professor x
I have loved Rush since I was a kid, and all 3 members of the band were just heroes in our eyes... Gutted and upset beyond words.
Suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon x A fan from England ..
I had to pause the video at 20 seconds because I can't take it. Huge part of my life.
*Neil was a huge inspiration for me as a drummer when I was just starting out.. My dream was to be able to play Limelight and Red Barchetta... I eventually accomplished this goal and we actually played them live, but I was nothing close to Neil, I was merely copying his musical genius.. He IS the Greatest Drummer Ever! R.I.P. *
I truly believed Rush would've started making new music again. We love you Neil! Rest in peace,Professor! This has hit me so hard😪😪

I never get emotional over the death of celebrities. Those other celebrities weren't Neil Peart. I share in the pain you all are feeling. RIP Neil.
Uuuuuugh. I feel sick. He was my absolute idol growing up. I started playing drums because I wanted to be like him. I honestly don't know anyone ever that could write songs with so much poetry, intelligence and uniqueness. He is and always be a part of me. I wonder how much time I have listened to rush and contemplated such amazing lyrics. RIP Neil. I have shed tears for you tonight.

Neil Peart still is the king of drums. No one else will ever be like Neil. Rest in peace Neil.
R.I.P. Neil. Your passing made me so sad but I am so, SO grateful that you, Geddy, and Alex made my life so enjoyable. I was in high school and an outcast when subdivisions came out. I`ve been listening to Rush all day. They have been so much a part of my life. Neil's passing is terrible news. Stay healthy Alex and Geddy.
So sad to hear this! I first heard of RUSH when my elder brother played one of their albums. I think I was about 8-10 years old. Since then I've bought all their albums and have seen them a couple of times live on stage in The Netherlands. Read his books, and lyrics, learned English and got interested in literature, art and cultures. My condolances to his familie, Geddy, Alex and their families, all their friends and fans worldwide. I was driving home from work yesterday evening, and the DJ on one of the local rock stations said "One of Rock's greatest drummers has left us... here's Neil Peart and Rush with 'The Spirit of Radio'." It took a second or two for that to sink in. I pulled into a nearby parking lot and did a search on Neil Peart's name, and discovered the details which had only been released to the public about 90 minutes earlier. I was heartbroken. Simply stated, Neil Peart has been my favorite drummer, and at the top of my list of musical heroes for as long as I can remember. He wasn't the reason I fell in love with the drums when I was a kid, but he inspired me to do my best to be a better drummer. This is a very sad time for so many of us who have been inspired by what he, Geddy, and Alex shared with us in our lives. It's good to read the comments of so many people who are sharing their feelings, and how they were also inspired. Deepest sympathies to Neil's family, bandmates, and everyone else who had the opportunity to know and love him.
RIP, Professor...
Easily categorized as one of the best drummers ever to Grace music and somehow he's actually a better person than he was a musician. A true legend
