    On September 9th, 24,000 inmates across the United States launched what they say is the largest prison strike in the nation's history. VICE News spoke to Bennu Hannibal, a lead organizer in the protest against poor living conditions and forced labor. Hannibal is currently in solitary confinement and although his prison has not gone on strike, he's used a smuggled phone to inspire prisoners across the country to take action.

    there's no point in putting criminals in prison if it doesn't help them become a better person and realise their wrong doings, prison is a money making industry. Yes these people have done bad things but they should be supplied with help not slave labour ffs

      first off they feed prisoners expired food...2nd the prisons are mold infested cages so if you think there will be some kind of rehabilitation your so wrong...the only thing prison does is turn someone into. a animal...they lose all senses...everyone that goes to prison isnt a murderer or rapist so to act like its good to put people in that kind of environment and think it's just -easy living- get real

      ***** yes i agree, however if you dont want people to come out of prison and reoffend the the best thing to do is treat them rightly. look at sweden they treat their inmates like gods and their reoffending rate is TINY.
      however for violent crimes they should be in hell.

      Laila Ray
      I never said anything about him. I am talking about all inmates. Is anyone in your family a victim of Johnny, the ferocious, vile pot smoker? What about the people who are falsely incarcerated? Or the ones in there for all the other petty, non-violent crimes?
      Just be glad that not using your brain isn't a crime, or you'd be getting the death penalty, Laila!

    • @corbinfathandme
      @corbinfathandme 8 років тому +3

      Assumptions by Laila, it would be hardly objective if he changed his mind due to a familial relationship. If someone kills or harms someone else, I think they should either get rehabilitated or discarded of. No matter who it is. If someone killed me mum, I would want them to be able to get help. Only a twisted person would murder for no good reason.

    First off, I don't condone the mistreatment of anyone, inmate or not.
    Secondly, prison is not a vacation resort. You basically belong to the government while time is being served. Don't do the crime if you cant do the time.
    Thirdly, prisons across the world are WAY worse. You're not fed, you don't get your laundry done, and you get little to no medical attention.
    And finally, you're continuing to break the law by smuggling a cell phone into prison! The irony....

    • @cacaman1391
      @cacaman1391 8 років тому +17

      Prisons should be for rehabilitation, not a industry.
      Even though it has been far proven that prisons don't work for that matter.
      You are treating people like animals for them to redeem themselves, now that's ironic.
      What ever someone has done, government shouldn't have the capacity to take away their dignity and just wash away their existence.

      If you incentivize a system that allows exploitation of cheap labor then "they" will be more likely to imprison people for minor crimes (usually related to nonviolent crimes) so they can exploit cheap labor. Guess who the system is more likely to imprison? Your people (blacks). I'm not black and I see the underlying motive. You are only seeing what's on the surface, bro.

    • @dewster4623

      ***** Most of these criminals are NOT rapists and murderers. Most crimes are related to marijuana or drugs. Self-inflicting "crimes" with no victim but the user. Please look up the facts.
      The reason many are in prison for something minor, like marijuana, is because of stupid laws like "3 strikes you're out", causing them to remain in prison longer than normal.

      what should the point of prison be? crime prevention? revenge? rehabilitation? we have the highest incarceration rate of any country. why is that and what is our goal, or what should it be?

    • @tripy75
      @tripy75 8 років тому +5

      No, I don't want them to have massage beds, but a prison should never be run by a private corporation trying to earn money.
      A prison is a place to re-integrate people in a society. You don't achieve that by exploiting their work. And come on, most of the people in jail are not there for murders, but for petty offense that would only result in a fine in almost any other part of the world.
      There is a will to put as many people in prisons as possible, and don't try to tell me it's about justice...

    This is an example of modern slavery. Prisons should rehabilitate, instead we have big corporations making money off them and we as a society pay the price for this.
    Our tax money is spend to support mass incarceration so those companies could make more money rather then investing this money in education to really fight the issue of crime rather its symptoms.

    I live in Alabama and have many friends who are correctional officers with the worst of the worst types. I wish they would focus more on veterans and the pay and benefits of the officers. Convicted murderers want to complain about their rights? You obviously don't care about the rights of the life you TOOK. Or the rights of those they trampled to be in there. I have no pity for them. I had less rights and access to facilities as a Marine than these prisoners do as murderers.

  • @gumcannon

    If you're saying these people deserve this punishment because they are murderers, rapists, etc. That is a reasonable opinion/argument.
    If you think these people don't deserve this punishment because they are in essence, still humans who despite their crimes should not be treated like slaves. That is also a reasonable opinion/argument.
    However, the real issue and point of contention here... Do you agree that it is ok for prisons to turn inmates into, essentially, free labor. Or do you subscribe to the idea that prisons are supposed to be about rehabilitation and eventual re-entry into society (eventually). >this clearly applies differently for prisoners with a life sentence, but it does not change the publicized intention of prisons<
    If you're not answering the second part, as well as the first, then you're missing a good portion of the point of this video.

    • @dindonpoo163
      @dindonpoo163 8 років тому +1

      Majority of the comment section is missing the point. A prisoner's wrongdoings shouldn't justify the prison's abuse of power. Yes- what the prisoner's actions are inexcusable, but not every one of them is in it b/c of murder or rape. It can be small like illegal drug trade.

    • @dodds677
      @dodds677 8 років тому

      gumcannon First of all if you committed a serious crime like that man in the video you shouldn't have rights. That man lost his rights when he committed the crime. Secondly there are different levels of prisons. The man in the video probably is at a maximum security prison. Most prisons are trying to get inmates out into the working force that are one time offenders because prisons are overpopulated and tax payers are paying for them to be in them. If you are in a prison like that man, you shouldn't have rights.

    • @gumcannon
      @gumcannon 8 років тому

      Crazy Chug No, like I get that. And to some extent agree that is a reasonable criticism. Ultimately, the point I'm raising is. Why do prisons exist? And if the answer, MIGHT in part be, is to enslave criminals (even ones who you deem deserve 0 rights.) for cheap labor.
      Essentially, if prisons are profitting so much from the mistakes of our population...That has large implications for not just the criminal system, but also how involved is the legal system in this. And potentially dozens of corporations as well.
      TL:DR prisons (and other companies who use prison's manufactured stuf like big name brand stores), profit off people comitting serious crimes

No one, be it a murderer or rapist, should be beaten or forced to become slaves for big corporations who don't even care of the rehabilitation of the inmates but who only care about money. This treatment is backward and had its place 200 years ago. Notice another thing, they were all black, not very surprising that a Southern prison is filled with black inmates. It's almost like people in the South like to pretend that it's the 'good old days' when all that black people did was slave for their white owners. Seriously it's 2016 not 1650.

    There is no excuse for inhumane living arrangements, even for a prisoner. Eventually the brutality is turned on the general public as well (it already has). We are a less civil nation than we were decades ago. It's unacceptable on the simple grounds that we are all human. Reform the system. End private prisons as well. A profit motive ensures abuse of the judicial system.

    I'm conflicted personally. Apart of me feels that as soon as you commit a violent crime towards another person that's not in self defense you forfeit your right to be treated like a human. You took that right away from the person you killed or attacked and that's real justice. Criminals should suffer for their crimes, not be given a comfortable life.
    The other half of me sees how broken our justice system is and I see that it's modern slavery. So many people are falsely convicted and misrepresented. There is no such thing as a truly fair trial. It's a complex issue and I know there isn't a clear solution. That's what's most frustrating.

      im pretty sure we dont throw people in jail for fun on our side of the border since prisons are not privatised and are tightly regulated just like banks
      in the US, on the other hand, inmates means money, some of them dont even legitimately belong in prison as their trials have been botched to fill the cells
      just look at the overwhelming majority of new inmates every year and compare their age with the inmates already in jail and you will come up with a very obvious and interesting conclusion

    We took a path down the wrong road in the USA a long, long time ago when it came to incarceration and the prison system. Prisons used to operate for rehabilitation. Now they operate for punishment. Most prisoners are not locked up for life. That means they have a release date and will be back in the population one day. You spend time in prison, are not given any means to better yourself as part of the human race and then are released and told, "Here you go, you're free. Try not to fuck up. By the way, it's near impossible to get a job or any sort of benefits. Good luck!". What do you think is going to happen?

    I watched a video of a prison in Brazil and it had a Brazilian being raped by a 3ft metal pole, no guards insight and men around him were laughing, this went on until someone thought it would be funny to push this metal pole as hard as they could up his anus, is clearly punctured his inside organs because when they pulled the pole out he simply squirted blood out his anus, he then lied of the floor, naked holding his stomach until he eventfully died.
    If anyone thinks the US prison system are fucked up look at Brazilian Prisons, I've seen so many fucked up videos of men being tortured, no guards, every man for yourself. It humbles me to look at other countries and the problems they face, people that live in first world countries are bubbled and protected from the reality of what majority of people go through, not within there country but outside it.

    If these work details are truly voluntary, then this cannot be considered slavery and such labor strikes would be pointless. However, if prisons actually see these strikes as a threat, then that is very different matter and needs to be looked at in much more depth.

    I think I support a certain amount of forced labor for legitimate prisoners (not imprisoned drug users etc), but only so they can pay for their accommodation, security, and food (but not for some silly revenge). I don't see how it's fair to make the society pay for it. Outside of prison, people have to work to pay for food and rent, so why shouldn't it be the same inside the prison?
    Besides, this would eliminate the financial argument for death penalty. If the prisoner is no longer a burden to the society, that's one less reason to kill them. (and imo that was the only half-legitimate argument for it - which was still outweighed by the risk of innocence).
    Having said that, daily 12 hour shifts is obviously too much, and is clearly used to make a profit. So this is exploitative and not okay. I'm willing to consider counter arguments, but I feel like a centrist position on this issue makes sense.

    If you send someone to prison then their food, shelter, exercise equipment, haircuts, water, power and medical expenses are all being covered by the tax payer. I think the least criminals could do is put in some cheap labor to offset those cost. Maybe if prisoners were more willing to work then housing them wouldn't be such an issue and other issues with their living conditions could be resolved using the money saved/generated from the prisoner's labor. But instead prisoners are protesting against the easiest and simplest way for them to get better living conditions, the same way everyone else has to use if they want better living conditions, hard work.

  • @ThoughtSpin

    You might not care about the prisoners, but this also affects law abiding people. If the private companies can get underpaid forced labour from the prisons, the companies have no incentive to hire regular employees at ordinary wages, thus the forced labour system undercuts wages for unskilled labour and law abiding citizens.

  • @JAY_SS88

    The Constitution actually allows for slavery in prisons. Forced labor is not illegal in USA prisons. It's disgusting , abusive and inhuman to treat people this way , but the USA laws and Constitution support this , and many people who've never been incarcerated have no idea what it's actually like.

I know how it works. ive seen it planned and implemented. from not the outside looking. from inside. and dont be fooled your agenda. your problem and is far different from his he wants power and anarchy. many people have their issue with the prison system and I agree with most of them and with you. yet no one be fooled. his life is gone. and he wants to be a squeaky wheel and agitate violence I know the prison politics they are a world of their own he aint no good .nor is his intentions. although deceiving he pretends they are. he is right though. it is slavery. prison employment should be strictly voluntary and all proceeds should benefit the prisoner and pay any restitution or fines at a balanced rate to the victims. Otherwise, we could imprison endlessly and make the prisoners pay for their own imprisonment. The profit motive would make the underlying crime irrelevant; every poor person could go to jail for jaywalking and become a slave to the State, put on endless parole and probation and cycled in and out of factory confinement based on the needs of the factory.
