Thank You Sir. There is a serious lack of information and skillsets being passed down from generation to generation. Yourself along with a few others have taken the time to share your knowledge. You have to know that it has not fallen on deaf ears. My family stumbled across your videos and now, a few weeks later, 17 homes in our area are growing, with GREAT SUCCESS, their own food that is far more nutritious, satisfying, and delicious than ANYTHING they could by in a store. That along with bringing the family together, outdoors, putting in a little good old fashion dirt work is doing wonders beyond description. Thanks again to both yourself, your family, and your hands. Blessings to you, them, and you crops. Cheers!

All great info. Another source to mix in is leaves, most cities have curb collecting service for the residents leaves and they pile it up like that and offer it back usually free after it has aged. That is what we have amended our clay soil with through the years, and it will grow anything now, we add leaves to the garden every year and plow them in, they decompose over the winter. They are great to mulch the rows with as well (once they have aged awhile).

Thank you Leon! You have cleared up so many questions I had. Looking forward to you next video. FYI I contacted a local goat farm about the feed barrels. They told me no we don't have any. When I asked If they knew anyone in the area that might have them I was told they usually just keep them and let them rot. So sad... This is in North Carolina. People don't realize we do have local cattle farms, you just have to look.
Question can I substitute Azomite for Sustane?

Wonder if you could critique my plans.
I have constructed large raised beds-using Pallets. I also have purchased 33 gallon plastic barrels from Car Washes; from their soap distributer's. Removing one bung plug; affixing PVC refill-spout.. and then perforated holes, down the side; which will be towards the bottom; as I lay it in side ways inside the box. Then; I have a mini PVC; for overflow; (OR... wouldn't the rill spout act as an over flow if I use the upper bung hole-running it directly out the side; with a 45 end.?) at the top portion of the barrel, extended to the edge of the box, with packed Potting Soil.

Thank you Leon. Love your informative videos. You are awesome! I've watched a lot of your older vids but don't recall if you have any on natural bug deterrent. My grandparents use to use things like tobacco juice, mouthwash, flour,Cayenne, baby shampoo etc. But I don't remember exactly what and how much. Or which during which part of the season. Do you use any natural deterrents for outdoor plants

I do have a few questions, in the beginning you said, maybe find a tree company and get them to drop of the ground up trees and branches, and then when mixing with pet moss don't put hardwood in it, I might answer my own confusion but I want yo make sure, it's ok to use hardwood when making compost but not when mixing your bucket material, 2nd when you make the bucket and have the watering pipe, how does it water you newly planted plants, they're 7 to 8 inches from anywhere near the lower part of the bucket or should you water until it gets some roots down in the soil, thank you for your vids and God bless

Leon thoughts on combing these two ideas. Compost and self wick? I'm going to try it:)
    Reduce food waste
    Reduce water use
    No need for fertilizer
    Grow healthy food
Plants will be watered and fed daily, just like you teach us! :)

Got it. Great practical insights. Question? It seems that the soil would rest on some sides of the covered pipe and thus in water below the 3” or 5” drip hole. This would make anaerobic bacteria active plus stinky water. Is that a problems?

Leon, hopefully you will see this. I only have access to compost at $65/cu yard! Clearly crazy. I have vernal pools in my woods, plus some areas where I have put leaves and grass in the past in a large burning pit. I am thinking of using this soil in the vernal pools and the burning pits in place of compost until I can make my own this year. This would, of course, be added to other amendments like peat moss, chicken manure, etc. Would this work well? Hope to hear from you because I'm building two new raised beds and I need to mix my soil to get them filled.

If you use the milk jugs in the bottom of your tubs without the weed cloth do you still use the PVC pipe to water from the bottom?
Could you use aged pine shavings mixed with with chicken manure in the bottom of the wicking tubs or should it be mixed with the soil?

Ok. I have a question for you or anyone to answer. I don't understand the purpose of creating the air space either with the bottles or pipe. The roots cannot enter the bottles or the pipe so it is not an air pruning situation. Since the soil goes down around the pipe or bottles, it stays saturated because of the water level. Is it to have less saturation because less soil is in contact with the water? I really appreciate your information and effort to help all of us.

I have a green belt behind my house, the leaves and tree limbs have been decomposing for 20 years. I was curious if the soil would be good to grow plants in, I dug some of the soil up it is really black and fine. Do I need to mix something in the dirt to help it wick, or could I just use it the way it is?
