At one point of my musical journey, I would of been considered an Elitist. I just liked what I liked. But as I've gotten older I've realized there's alot of great music out there, and I want to find it! Thank You for bearing with me on the beginning stages of this channel. When one sees male reactors respond to the tales with a moment of silence & collecting themselves, one knows they got it... it helps one not be so afraid of some men...

This song, for me, hit's a little bit to close to home. I could have ended like Violet. I had the luck to find a group of friends in highschool, that opened the door to a different life. This song shows how careless the systems handles the most precious there is, our childeren. I understand your silence. Ren is gifted and he uses his gift sometimes in a brutal way. Unappologatically. It hits hard, but is always sincere. So another big hug, for doing this song. Bless your kind soul.

To the ladies who commented... I wish I could wave a magic wand and make everything turn into puppies and rainbows!
I grew up watching my father seriously mistreat my Mother! It was horrific, yet made me a better man! One who did the opposite!!!
Ren telling the tales I hope have opened up enough conversations to prevent, or stop, such treatment! And hopefully showing some people just how destructive their ways are... enough so to Make Them Stop! Seek Help! Etc...
      Stay strong ladies!
On a side note... don't think this sorta thing doesn't happen to men as well! May not be physical... yet almost just as demeaning! I have 22 years of marriage that proves that! Being full time military it's shocking now looking back how I was threatened constantly with being reported to my chain of command!
Again... not physical... mental! I'd argue it's not much different overall!
Anywho... go on Trolls... say your worst!

@@Jaykayorso Bardcore is a musical style that references back to traditional music of Medieval times. The Guardian wrote an article about it's resurgence in 2020. You can definitely hear this style on the beginnings of Hi Ren, Screech's Tale and Violet's tale. I heard Ren make a passing reference to it inn either a livestream or an interview. Sorry I can't remember which.

Generational trauma. He sums it up when he sings up that stairway “she never had a chance . . .” We honestly can do little but tinker at the edges of drug and alcohol addiction, certain mental illnesses, homelessness until we get EXTREMELY serious about molestation and family violence.

Ren is not just a mega-creative artist, he's also a powerful social commentator. He doesn't ask; 'Oh - why do these things keep happening?" He simply TELLS us. He lays out the pathways that lead innocents like Jenny, Screech and Violet into becoming victims and perpetrators. Ren does have a question and it is: "If we know why these things happen - and we DO - why aren't we doing more to STOP these tragedies??? He wants us to be fully engaged and fully 'present' - uncomfortable as it is. It's not good enough to simply murmur; "Oh what a shame..." and then click on and away to the next news item...

Ren's fans call this music style Bardcore (like the bard Jaskier in The Witcher but in modern times) and here's the origin story of the trilogy 🤩😁🤯
This wasn't originally a trilogy story. Ren read in the paper one day with a small article about a 14 yr old boy killing a young prostitute with a knife in an attempted robbery. Knife crime had been skyrocketing in London at this time. Later that same evening the boy had been shot and killed by the police . It disturbed him, so he set out to write a commentary not just on senseless violence, but on how desensitized we've become to it. The words he ends both Jenny and Screech's Tales with is "It's such a Shame" we say these words all to often and just move on, without a second thought. The the lead inspector at the scene said " So Young, It's such a shame".
Violets Tale was written over 2 years later adding yet another layer of commentary by Ren. He wanted us to consider not only generational violence but to make us look at all angles of society that we turn a blind eye to. Both characters are born out of violence on that cruel night and then both killed with brutal violence in the same night 14yrs later. Also, his lyrics have even more meaning when you read in between the lines. For example he doesn't say what Jenny was doing or why she wanted to escape from this place & life, or why Screech thought she was older saying at Patrick's door "I left this lady lying on the floor". Could it be the way she's dressed & her heavy makeup? Also why is a 14yr old girl out so late at night alone in a sketchy area wearing high heels & that "she's walked it a thousand times before" everything points to Jenny being an underage prostitute, showing us what Ren writes has reason & makes us think. There's no fat on the bone, every word is weighed & has meaning.
Also, how can both these siblings be so cursed? Jenny has the same traits as her mother Violet, quiet, voiceless, and timid. Where as Screech mirrors his father Stevie in every way, Loud, obnoxious, and easily prone & provoked into violence. They didn't know one another and had never met their biological parents. What made these kids so much like their parents? Was it simply Nature, inherited traits due to their genetic make-up OR Nurture, being brought up in the broken governmental system filled with, mistreated & in many cases, abused children? He organically takes us on this journey, leaving us to think shouldn't we be doing better job in this so called "advanced, wealthy, 1st world society.
I' loving your Ren reactions, they can't come out fast enough. Cheers 🥂

I noticed after watching this many times that Ren likes to use Scales to depict the passage of time. In Hi Ren he uses Descending Scales to demote the time between when he was "told by my therapist that I'm ill" to "I've spent half my life ill". In Violet's Tale he uses Ascending Scales to demote going back from Violet in the Hospital to her life as a child. The fact that after watching this well over 25 times I'm still finding nuances I never noticed before is one reason why he is a Performing Arts Genius!

You aren’t wrong… did you notice he “fast forwards” stories too? In Violet’s song after the bad’un Stevie beats her REN “fast forwards” with a downward progression back to the point in the story where he started, with Violet in the hospital dying…. REN’s music is very like an onion, layers upon layers. People notice that he chose the hallways and such for their resonance. I suspect he also chose the specific streets he walked, and how fast he walked because he was aware of how the graffiti on the walls acted almost like pictures echoing his story. Or that the moment Violet dies in her tale he steps into a green ghostly light. How about how in Screech’s tale which both starts with Jenny’s last breath and ends with Screech’s last breath he repeats “our story” and both time gasps “our” like it is the last breath of our protagonists? Is some of this coincidence? Maybe it’s happy coincidence? Or maybe the level of genius is insane. I vote the latter, the meticulous nature, the intentional repetition of themes and Easter eggs, all the nuance from gesture, tone, voice use, physical stance that feed into the story… like you I have watched and rewatched REN’s videos more then any other artist ever and after months of watching I STILL find new things to marvel over.

Ren says he taught himself guitar by watching and slowing down Jimi Hendrix videos. He grew up on 90's hip-hop, reggae, Rage Against the machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Django Reinhardt. His father is a classical (traditional British instruments) musician. It's crazy how in his various songs he can throw in elements of all of these influences and master them.

This song triplet is an amazingly powerful story, but it's Ren so I've come to expect that from him. My favorite part about Ren though is he is staying humble and bringing others up... Even the rapper King Dotta who challenged Ren to a diss battle... Ren did his diss per the traditions but then halfway through gave Dotta a complement and told his fans to give the guy a listen. I have been listening to Dotta's new music and commenting what I do and don't like. I even made a suggestion this morning on a song series he could work on to improve his skills.

I grew up in similar circumstances as Violet and the horrors of domestic violence, abuse, child sexual abuse, destroyed our family and nearly destroyed me. I love that Ren is willing to cover these very important issues that so many live and die from. I think I heard somewhere that this is based on a true story in England. I was born into abuse and we were left in the home because CPS felt that the abuse was not life threatening. 2 of my brothers killed themselves in their 30's and I was headed the same way. I love Ren for not shying away from these serious and important issues our societies face year after year.

We not only disrespect the others with such agression, we disrespect ourselves. We are all one and by hurting the other, you also hurt yourself unwillingly. Every bullet that you shoot will bouns back to you and every fist that you punch with will eventually punch you back. So it is not only about the future coinsiquensess, it is about every single second of existing. You can live with love or with fear and agression.

Mmm.. angry, saddened, heartbroken.. It is so hard to break the cycle of violence and abuse. I'm sure if you go back further, Stevie was abused, or neglected, or a victim of violence. Not always, sometimes there are simply bad people, selfish, simply rotten. But usually there's a reason. There are dark things in my own past, but i shall not discuss that on an open forum, as i don't want to hurt others. It hurts you, it shapes you, it can follow you and imprint on you. It takes a lot of work to come to terms with it, but you can come out of it into the light. As someone else said, hits too close to home, I hope everyone is ok, or will be after seeing that. They blame the girl, blame the boy, and don't look at their responsibility as a member of society. Ren disrupts willful ignorance and forces us to look. 14 year olds. One probably a hooker and the other a murderer.

But he makes any music sound good. Haven't been so impressed really ever. I think it's the performance package that makes it. Like there's not just the music, there's the writing of lyrics and music, the multiple instrument mastery, the live performances, the story telling and visual portrayal, the messages helping others, the way he's being people together and building a great caring community. It's all just mind-blowing, really!

It's messed up, but I enjoy watching people who really take in the Tales. Some people don't understand the end, some people are just floored by the live one-take performance (x3) or the guitar playing or the camera work or their surprise at how sucked in to the story they got. Not as many people really take in the tragedy. And in Shakespearean fashion, Ren creates 3 individual tragedies (the 14-year-old girl dressed to look older while walking the streets in high heeled shoes who gets killed); the 14-year-old misfit boy who takes things too far, kills someone, can't find help from his friend or his girl, and winds up dead by the police; the young woman with a traumatic past and present who gets killed), and then hits us with the overarching tragedy of this family (mom dies, father hopefully locked up, the twins separated and likely into the system where the girl is seemingly an underage prostitute and the boy a criminal). The twins are born and die on the same day, and never even knew each other. Without knowing it, Jenny acts like her mother - frozen and silent, while Screech acts like his father - a murderer. Only Ren could express and thereby make the audience feel the horror of intergenerational violence in 13 minutes without coming off preavch-y. Mad talented.
You should know Ren has many sides in various genres, including a lighter side. My current favorite, "Humble," has an inspiring message if you get beyond the bouncy beat with a ska vibe. His busking videos aren't serious either are usually collaborations of mash-ups or medleys rather than straightforward covers. H8s former band, The Big Push, has posted several great takes from a day where Ren is wearing red suspenders. You might like "War Pigs" which is rather a compilation of Black Sabbath with a touch of Rage Against the Machine, though my favorite is "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop."
If you want more storytelling of a completely different topic, try "Money Game" parts 1&2 (part 3 is coming out next month). If/When you watch part 2 make sure you watch the official lyric video.
Hope you dive dow6n the Ren rabbit hole!

You could read this tale of generational trauma in a newspaper and not get emotionally involved but the magic of music and Rens lyricism brings out all the emotion of all 3 characters. The amazing thing is you can't truly know Jenny's tale without knowing the other two tales . Its a brilliant mind that can weave a story so detailed and convoluted without sacrificing any of the emotion . We are lucky to have such a Bard in our time .

It's a heart wrenching story, but no-one really knows what another person is going through. A country singer by the name of Charlie Rich had this song out during the 1970s called, ' No-one knows what goes on behind closed doors ' it's really sad , but someone at some given time is going through this crap. It's sad, but a reality .

rens songs are going under your skin.
are you familiar with the name susanne sundfør?
she made a feature song for a documentary called "self portrait", about the life and work of norwegian fotographer lene marie fossen, who took deeply touching portraits by using a simple hand camera and no artificial light. and as touching as her fotos is the song "when the lord" by susanne. lene suffered from anorexia since her early age of ten years old, when she decided to stop time. sadly she passed away short before the documentary was screened.
this is a song you will never forget. plus susannes artistry made both her and lene immortal.
susanne is the best norwegian artist, an excellent singer, songwriter and composer. all of her work is extraordinary, deep and beautiful. it's hard to tell a favourit song, but for sure "when the lord", "when" (album version) and "the brothel" live at cigalle is amongst them.

I absolutely respect and find resonance in your reaction to these tales. These are murder ballads, akin to those of old as keenly as Frankie & Johnny and other 19th and 20th century folksongs. If anything these three by Ren ring even truer to the more ancient ilk; such ballads as Binnorie O’, The Cruel Brother, Babylon, or the 1800 North Carolina murder ballad, Omie Wise.
Looking at the 20th century I might point to Levi Stubb’s Tears, but even that is mild and overtly sympathetic by comparison. Ren instead invests himself in each character, even challenging us with the murderer before the gallows (or suicide by cop) of Screech.
Ren was on the inside of a mental health system that churned through characters like Jenny, Screech and Violet. The tales are close and real for him, and him making them so nearly real for us is an insistence on not letting these tales die with their actors. They are ageless and speak directly to our humanity and/or our utter lack thereof.
We need to hear the vicious and obscene versions of Little Red Riding Hood - because they are the truer tale - not the fairy tales of romance or Disney revisionists. And for those who endure such suffering, hearing on’s own tale refocuses it. Hearing the always tragic ending can spur us to seek an exit. There is no romance in real murder ballads. Just ready brutality and of course sociopathy and psychopathy.
