Bought my 5513 Submariner in Vietnam and it’s been on my wrist to this day. It’s part of me and will go to my grandson one of these days. I just hope he wears it like I did and passes it down to his son. It is the most iconic of all watches. You can’t put a price on it.

    Excellent video.
Yore the first UA-camr who (like me) loves a date on their watch, yet acknowledges that the cyclops only works when viewed straight on.
It’s still a great feature, but glare from lighting and the bubble itself make legibility of the date often difficult.

I bought one as an impulse buy just after I got divorced about 20 years ago and had about 3k to my name so I blew that on a Submariner. It's brilliant, I spent 8 years or so working in Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq and rarely took it off. It is currently getting (rather expensively) serviced so currently I don't know the time as it's my only watch. Looking forward to getting it back. PS Thanks to this really interesting video I learnt that it was introduced in 1953 - just like me.

I have been in the world of watches for a few years, and like most, I got fixated with different brands and different models over the years, but in the end I go full circle and the submariner shines through the noise. The downside is the AD experience, that can vary greatly depending on your location, and getting robbed.

I can confirm it is a perfect one watch collection. I bought my Submariner in 1994 and was my only watch until around 2012-13 when I started getting some other watches. It did everything from wearing with a suit at work to nights out on the lash in my youth to travels abroad.

I recently got a SD43 with the mark 1 dial which I love but have been tempted towards a sub as it’s more wearable but I stayed loyal and now wear the SD43 on a Rubber B which it more comfortable and under the radar…, if I want I can always put the bracelet back on if the occasion arises, that is now my 1 watch collection 👍🏻 Great video Andy keep up the good work mate 👌🏻

Nice one! Personally, I'd go DJ, OP or Explorer as a 1 watch GADA. Unless you dive, they do it all. I think the modern 6 digit Subs have got a bit unrefined in an effort to look toolish. Also, I just don't find them comfortable. Yes, they're better made than a 5 digit, but not as versatile or comfortable. A 5 digit did me 20 years 24/7 as a diver, marine biologist and then forester. 6 digit with a suit? I've got one and I wouldn't! Beyond Rolex, I think the Speedy is more day-to-day versatile unless you do watersports or marine work.

I have a 50th Anniversary Sea Dweller that I managed to get retail last year. Perfect for my 7.5” wrists. It wears that little bigger than a sub but on my wrists no one would notice the difference. I love it. Like the submariner It would be my only watch if only I didn’t feel vulnerable wearing it these days. So always careful to cover it when out in the UK. I will never sell it but its a shame that it doesn’t get the wrist time I want to give it. So will have to continue to use my original Omega Seamaster 300m (Pierce Brosnan version) and Seiko Proplex King Turtle Diver for most of the time.

Such a tough question b/c so much depends on the individual’s life and lifestyle. If you’re retired, daily wear is dress casual, and you’re frequently at the pool, then I can absolutely see a sub (although I prefer the sub vs the date sub) checking 90% of the boxes. If you’re in a suit&tie every day but still want the option of taking it to the pool, I think a DJ, VC 222, or Omega AT checks those same boxes better. Suit&tie every day and no need for water resistance? The rabbit hole gets deeper and deeper.

Its tritium dial has long past its usefulness but has left a parting gorgeous patina Oh, and still +2 per day on only one service back in 2000. I never take it off, only to correct the time every couple of weeks and then wash it under a warm tap with fairy liquid. I don't baby it at all, its not a bauble its a daily essential tool and dear companion to me. I can look back at countless pictures since 1991 and see this on my wrist. Its part of me . I would not swap it for anything and my teenage daughter will get it when I kick the bucket :).

Excellent video! I’ve worn tool type wristwatches my entire life until recently. However, my father passed recently and I inherited 3 very nice watches that have changed my approach considerably: a vintage 18k gold Tudor Oyster Yorke (1958), an 18k Concord (1984), and a gold Chopard pocket watch. I now wear the Tudor instead of one of my beater watches most days, but I worry I’m going to break it. After a lot of research and contemplating the pros and cons, I have decided to buy a Rolex Submariner, and next week will pick it up from my jeweler. I can’t think of any other watch that ticks all the boxes for me… a daily wear watch that is fit for any dress occasion, tight enough to survive my often waterlogged outdoor pursuits, robust enough to withstand the constant pounding of my woodworking and shooting hobbies, and estherically pleasing enough to keep me smiling every time I look at it. A watch I can wear to my coffin, where my heirs can remove it from my wrist at the last and carry it forward in time for the next generation to enjoy. So, yes, I believe it will be the only watch I ever need from now on.

I think you’ve highlighted the key reasons why I wouldn’t choose a Sub as a one watch collection. The price - it’s an expensive watch to buy and to be walking around with everyday and doing all daily tasks in, as you said this also means in certain places you’re painting a target on your back for opportunist muggers. My choice would be the Omega Seamaster, it’s a great watch, good price point, tough as nails, and isn’t target by thieving scum.

To me, on a contrary, the Sub is the perfect watch to wear on everyday basis. It goes with casual clothing as well as with more dressy. But, off course I live in Switzerland and mugging is very rare over here. I’ve been wearing Rolex watches since my first one in 1996 and never experience anything bad about it. Personally I find the Seamaster very esthetic on billboards and photos, however I don’t like it as much on my wrist. I don’t really know why? I do have a fairly wide wrist that could easily host such a watch. To me the magic doesn’t operate with this watch for some strange reason. I own a nice collection with a few Rolexes, an AP Royal Oak, à Blancpain Flyback big date, à Panerai Luminor Marina, Zénith El Primero, etc… but no Omegas. Unlike a lot of people I’m not so attracted by the Speedmaster and was in search to add an Omega to my collection and couldn’t find any. Perhaps the Aquaterra with the green dial?

You are absolutely correct. It's is a perfect one and done ...but it does depend on your wrist size.
I have a 20cm/8-inch wrist, so although I do have a Submariner, my go to watch is the Polar Explorer II - as it is more appropriate for my wrist at 42mm and with a broader bracelet.
I also have the 43mm Sea Dweller, which looks like a big Submariner, so would be perfect - if it wasn't so thick and heavy.
So, unless your have a girl wrist, or a big wrist like me, the Submariner is pretty perfect.

Nice and honest video. I have a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Quartz as my only watch for now. Everything else is out of budget. Well, technically the Tag was also out of budget since I am still paying for it :) I have always loved high-end watches and the Tag Aquaracer line in particular. I used to have a Longines Oposition but I gifted that to my son when he went to his first prom dance in high school. I bought that many, many years ago and it has remained in perfect shape, battery change after battery change. But I do want to get an automatic but oh boy after going down the UA-cam rabbit hole of watches I built my wish list. But I fear my lifetime won't be enough to complete. Although, if I had to choose, I would choose the Omega Seamaster 300 in blue/steel as my only watch. As you said, for me that is my ultimate goal, my watch to plan for to own "one day". I could stop collecting at that point but I still have a wish list. Not too long, though. The first in my list is the Omega, although likely I will get a low-cost Orient first. So the Orient on the list is the Mako 3 in red. The next one is a replacement for a Longines in my collection, and that would be the Longines Conquest "panda". Then, I do have to admit I have a thing for Tag design, as much as some purists don't like it. So I need an automatic Tag. That would be the orange dial/black bezel Aquaracer. Stunning watch. One thing about Tag the designs are so beautiful. I kept starting at mine for days after I bought it :) Last but not least on the list is a Rolex. I see it mostly as "if you are into collecting high-end watches, you need to have a Rolex". To me it's not the most desirable watch, that position goes to the Omega. If I ever am able to buy a Rolex, AFTER I have bought everything else on my list, I would get the latest version of the no-date Submariner. I don't like the cyclops at all and although the orange Tag does have a cyclops as well, it's very small and not bulky like the Submariner. Plus the orange is just so cool. Anyways, cheers!

Great review, No Date for me all day! love the continuity of the glass without a date complication! the new Explorer has a better Anti-Reflective coating, but I agree with you on the Submariner reflecting light & losing some clarity. The No Date 40mm pre 41mm demise just seems to have the perfect proportions for me.

I love my 124060 Submariner, the one without the date. It does get wrist time but as you mention I tend to think about where I'm going a little more before wearing it. And that's the reason I couldn't have a one watch collection consisting of the Sub. It's a terrific watch and that bezel action is sublime. On those occasions where I'm unsure about wearing the Sub I have alternatives like the Tudor BB58 that is almost as dressy for a dive watch. Personally for a non diver one watch collection I'd be looking at the Omega Constellation Globemaster from 2016 with the pie pan blue dial on the strap. It's water resistant to 100M when new, slim, accurate METAS standard although not as good as the stated Rolex Superlative Chronometer standard. It flies under the radar of most people including many watch nerds. I still love the classic Submariner though.

I bought my Submariner many moons ago. Just walked into the shop, paid £1100 and walked out with a brand spanking new watch. I then gave it to my son for his 21st.
I now have an Omega AT quartz. Tag Carrera and a Seiko GS quartz. My replacement for the Submariner is a Davosa Ternos Ceramic. I work with my son everybody thinks we both have a Rolex Submariner. The Davosa is nice watch and when adjusted properly keep really good time. I know what you mean about wearing it out though. A rep who comes to us has a Submariner GMT, he paid £10,000 for it. A mate of his got he's nicked abroad
and he doesn't wear his out any more. The watch was insured, he got a new one and then sold it. It's sad when you can't wear something you want to for fear of getting robbed.

My submariner is now 27 years old. It’s the stainless and 18k model with date. Every so often I take to my local watchmaker for a thorough cleaning. I have worn it continuously 24/7 for 27 years. All parts are original except of course for appropriate gaskets. I never have it polished and only give it a light rub with a polishing cloth. It has aged a bit but then has stayed about the same for many years. It has never been immersed in water yet I wear to garden and wash my hands. The immensely strong bracelet has never stretched and the patina of the stainless and 18K is still striking as ever. The time keeping is so impressive as to be mythical for a mechanical watch of this modest price. I set it four months ago and it has lost 30 seconds. Less than a third of a second a day. For a 27 year old 24/7 watch. I did get my moneys worth. I think $375 for the most recent service was well worth it.

I have worn my GMT Master II every day for the past 11 years and I am giving it a bit of a rest - taking out for vacations and special occasions (my wife and I will likely send our watches in for a full service - not needed) but to make them look new again. The GMT is an unbelievable watch, I am on the “list” for a Sub and will get one or two sooner or later. Right now I am enjoying some lesser watches just for fun and variety - Seiko, Citizen, Phoibos, even a couple of San Martin and Steeldives but nothing is a Rolex - I also enjoy my Seamaster… in a few years I will have these beater variety watches but the core and the heart of my collection will always be my beloved GMT Master II and the Sub I eventually get. The Sub is an awesome watch, it’s the most copied, covered and durable watch that retains or gains value, it’s perfect for a 1 watch collection, it’s the Icon.

This is exactly why I'm so excited about the Tudor BB54 right now. It gives me that vintage feel (I like smaller watches even though I don't have small wrists), it's sturdy and durable (I assume!) and actually reasonably affordable compared to the sub (especially on the secondary market)...I know it's a bit of a boring choice, but my favourite flavour of ice cream is vanilla, and I like "boring"...you can also call it "classic"

I started off my 1 watch collection with a Tag Aquaracer about 15 years ago - Since then - I've accumulated 2 Tudors (GMT & Reverse Panda) and 2 Rolex (explorer 2 and a DJ41) in the search for my 1 watch 😂 - Today I collected my Tudor GMT from Beaverbrooks in Chester after the date issue was repaired under warranty - whilst walking from the car I passed Mappin & Webb and had a look in the window - There was a couple of S&G Datejust models and to my disbelief a Submariner Date - on closer inspection I was shocked to notice they all had the correct time and were actually working genuine pieces - this took me inside where I asked if I could be cheeky and try the Sub on. Turns out the guy who served me was the same guy who sold me my DJ41 at the Liverpool branch of Goldsmith's - the Goldsmith's in Liverpool is closed for refurb so he was telling me that they are working out of the Chester branch of Mappin & Webb all being part of the WOS Group - Anyways - after a good chat about watches and falling in love with the Sub - I'm now on the list for one - Will it be the one ? I really think it could be 😂

For many it is the Submariner, for others it is a Seiko diver or the Blancpain FF, for my dad it's the black Planet Ocean, for my mum it's the mid size sword hand style SMP, for me it is the blue SMP 300. As long as the diver is not that huge and doesn't come with too flashy colors you might be able to combine it with any style you like.

Following the "watch community" for some time now and must say that this is the most controversial watch ever. From my perspective, the biggest issue with this watch is not the mark-ups, wait lists, price, etc. but the "burden" of marking yourself as a target, either in the face of criminals, or in the face of judgmental people. If you put those things aside and try to look at this from a brand/product perspective, this is by far the best watch you can have. First, it comes from a brand that has clear and defined product catalog, structured service centers, good warranty setup, etc. Secondly, one could hardly contest the way this watch looks and feels. Thirdly, the movement inside is great, and you may be sure that this product will last for a long time.
If cars were an analogy, same goes for BMW, a great product, from a great brand, but also the favorite car of somewhat sketchy people :). Thank you for your content.

We have a swimming pool. So what is my 1 watch for my 20cm wrist? A second gen 43mm gray dial Aqua Terra. On shark skin part of the year and on an Uncle beads of rice the rest of the year. Bought second hand 3 years ago for $3500 on EBay. Can wear it truly anywhere. New Orleans French Quarter after dark. Memphis. The Bronx on the subway. Subtle in the extreme. But whenever I sit down with a group of medical students I get “Oh wow! It’s an Omega! “. Am headed to Germany in a few weeks. What will I wear? The Aqua Terra. What will I take along? No matter what I'm doing, or where I'm going. I'm not precious about the watch, I'm a farmer and wear doing every single task on the farm, it's been places you can't even imagine. People often forget these were military watches. They're tough as nails. One watch means you have to let go of your fears about something happening to the watch. It's liberating. Of course, if it's a large financial investment for you, it's likely you won't be able to fully embrace truly owning just one watch.

Yes, back then, you could walk in to an AD and get it below retail on any day. Its a tank, and a great watch. But, if you are buying it now, at above retail there are way better options. Look at the Glashutte Original Seaq. Much better watch for the money. My point is its a great watch but not worth over 10k.
