  • Tarantula may not be able to feel emotions, but they definitely show signs of stress - and pretty often! What many people don't know about tarantulas is that they are actually big, dorky babies who get nervous about pretty much anything and everything! They are the neurotic introverts of the spider world, prone to having anxiety attacks at a moment's notice.
    But since they can't talk to us or make sounds like a cat or dog, their signs are very unique and specific to them and if you don't know what you're looking for, you may miss some of these important warning signs that your tarantula is having a full blown panic attack. Of course, certain signs (like trying to bite you) will be incredibly obvious but some signs of tarantula stress are quite subtle, so I'm going to cover everything here.

    they say tarantula's can't feel emotions, but I kinda disagree with that, if you can feel "stress" "comfortable" and even "scared" then yes, you can feel emotions, we need more studies on this

      They say this all the time when animal brains look any different than the human or average mammalian. Humans are very egotistical animals and we can't comprehend that we aren't seperate from the animal kingdom. I can tell you I'd rather hang out with my spiny flower mantis than most people any day

    I learned pretty early to re-use the substrate to minimize stress. Let say you have to rehouse your tarantula to something bigger, use the same substrate or mix up new substrate with the old. Often they dont care if rehoused with compleatly new substrate, but during my 20 years in the hobby i have noticed that sometimes they get stressed. New substrate have diffrent smells than the substrate that the tarantula was kept on. By reusing the substrate they seem to get less stressed. It us something familiair, especially if they had been kept for some years on the same substrate. Plus it is cheaper than if you have to spend money on new substrate. Substrate never gets bad with age, on the contrary, it is getting better. I have some adult tarantulas that i kept on the same substrate since they where juveniles, if course mixed with new substrate cos they was rehoused to bigger enclosure. So that is one of my tip to minimuze stress. Always re-use the substrate
    Another tip is to never rehouse an adult female if she is astablished in her adult enclosure. There is no need to. Even if mushrooms is growing, they are less stressful than digging up the burrow and rehouse ut to a compleatly new "enviroment" Old substrate makes it feels more familiair, but best is to just let her live in the same enclosure until she pass of old age. I have not many tarantulas theese days but i have a E murinus that has been in the same enclosure for 4 years and i have had both funghus and some mold during those years. I have some springtails and isopods in with her, so thats another tip i guess?
    Keep up the good work. Love your channel!

    I check on my tarantulas every morning. Christmas weekend my Chaco golden knee went into the cork bark log, normally she's out and on the log or hiding in her burrow. She got in the log but she's got about a 7" leg span and I was worried that the log might be too small, so I went and bought a log with a bigger opening (She hasn't gone in the log since april). I then used a paint brush to coach her out of the log. I didnt use enough force to injure. When she got out, she gave me a threat pose for the first time. I closed the lid and when i checked half hour later, she was still in the pose. I left her alone and she crawled into the new hide at something over the next few hours. Monday she partially sealed off the opening to log but I can see in the log because it's against the side of the enclosure. Either Thursday or Friday morning, I shined the flashlight in to see how she was because she completely sealed off so the inside was completely dark. She turned around and went into a hiding pose. Every morning since then when I do that quick check, she's still in that pose. What can I do to help her. I only check for a few seconds to see if she's okay.

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  Рік тому +1

      She might be fine! As long as she has access to water, she may just need some alone time. Many spiders do not like to be out in the open and enjoy darkness.

    I rehoused my t to a smaller enclosure since the one she came in was way too big for her and didn’t have enough substrate to burrow. She bolted out the new enclosure and onto the side of the tank but luckily I caught her in a cup on time. It took a good 10 minutes to get her into her new home. I used the same hides from her last enclosure and added some moss and a few leaves and left the same drinking bowl. I’m hoping she gets adjusted quickly! So far she’s went into her old hide and started webbing (which I haven’t seen her do in a while and I forgot to mention she had molted about 3 days ago and got huge). I’m just constantly checking on signs for stress 😅 she’s usually never active and seems to be her normal self but idk. Any advice?

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  2 роки тому

    I have a new rose hair sling and it’s climbing all of the walls all the time. What’s the perfect substrate for them? I’m considering taking it out and drying the substrate completely out in the oven. I’m just worried if I do that it will be dehydrated in the future

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  6 місяців тому

      I've always used coconut fibre substrate (amzn.to/3RG0mM8) and my rose hair has liked it a lot. I agree with your idea to dry the substrate - if my substrate even has the LEAST amount of moisture, my rose hair is miserable and won't touch it. This species likes dry substrate so as long as you have a dish full of water in the enclosure you don't have to worry about the spider getting dehydrated.

    Looks like my Lp sling is stressed it climbs around the enclosure and it tries to escape (it's leg reaches out of the vent hole like it was saying "lemme outta here!").
    But this started after I put some wet moss inside the enclosure. I panicked and I tried to rehouse it to a bigger enclosure and wow it turned way more aggressive when I poked it with a brush to make it move it just ran off full speed out of the enclosure and thank God I prepared a catching cup so eventually I managed to move it to that bigger enclosure and still climbing around until it calms down.
    And I'm scared to even open the lid again it stressed me enough to even think about rehousing for the future. What should I do? I'm new to all of this. This is my first time facing problem like this. I need some tips and help please anyone?

He is a pink toe tarantula so I needed to spray his enclosure with water. When I spayed in there he got super spazzy and fell on to the ground of his enclosure. He is refusing food as well. And any time he moves he moves a normal pace but his legs are super fast and also spazzing. I re homed him 2 months ago and he hasn’t created a web yet. The Arachnerd Aw I’m sorry this is happening! One thing I can think of that might explain him not eating besides premolt could be the changing seasons if you’re on the east coast. Spidey always gets slow and has a less stable appetite once fall comes. As for the spazzing legs perhaps he has an injury that impacted his ability to move when he fell? I know dyskinetic syndrome has some of these symptoms too but I really hope that’s not the case!

      Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that :( That sounds so stressful for you and the spider. If he blocked himself off, that's really normal behavior for after a molt or wanting to be left alone. How long has it been since his molt? Some tarantulas need up to 2 weeks before accepting food after molting. He will likely be ok, just keep trying every week or two. My tarantulas regularly stop eating for 6+ months at a time and they are fine. My g. rosea once went a year and a half without food and had a perfectly healthy molt and regained her appetite. It was STRESSFUL but I learned that that's just what they do lol. Just make sure he has water even if he's not eating :)

As of last week (just when I decided to rehouse it), I've only seen it out of the hide once or twice. That sounds like normal and annoying tarantula behavior lol. Very normal for tarantulas to be skittish and antisocial. My tarantulas love being in their private space. Sometimes this can be because they are getting used to a new home or are in premolt and want to be protected/privacy. But some tarantulas just like to be in their hides. My baby tarantula spends most of its time underground and my adult G. rosea loves to be in enclosed, dark spaces. It's usually very normal and it's likely that your tarantula is coming out at night when it's quiet and dark.

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  2 роки тому +2

      That's a great question! I think it depends on the age of your tarantula. If you have a baby, they might be hungry 2-3 times per week. For most adults a feeding once every 1-2 weeks is good. It's also normal for your tarantula to eat less during colder months because they slow down and "hibernate" a little

    Hi Patricia! Please, can I ask for your help? Kind of a scary situation I think. I wanted to ask, can tarantulas die from stress? One of my tarantulas recently molted (a few hours ago) and I opened up the enclosure to refill her water dish. She then threw up a threat pose. After, even though I knew that P. Metallicas are photo sensitive, I tried taking a few pictures w flash on because my friends were egging me to show her beautiful colors and my little sister also kept looking at her with a flashlight on since she was fascinated by spiders. I stupidly allowed her because I really like it when people take interest in my beloved Ts. Then I tried placing a cover by her hide so she doesn't get hit by the light much anymore but again she threw up a threat pose. And right now I'm just really scared that she might end up leaving me permanently because of my actions... Is that possible?

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  17 днів тому

      Yes! I am glad that your tarantula molted fine (sounds like she is actually a bit sassy now after her molt). I think she will be fine as long as you give her some alone time. Tarantulas can be defensive after a molt for several days because their bodies are still soft and vulnerable. So she may just be trying to signal that she wants her space to rest and get her strength. Just make sure she has some water and leave her alone for a few days. If her molt was fine I don't think she is having any abnormal behavior. Hope this helps!

    Is shaking slightly while walking a sign of stress?

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! I haven't really heard of Ts shaking while walking besides in cases of Dyskinetic syndrome or when there is an issue with mobility. That might impact the way they move. If your tarantula has a very plump abdomen it might look like it's shaking as they move.

      @@TarantulaHeaven oh thank god she does have a plump abdomen I’ve seen videos of did and it looks heart breaking, so I was just seeing if tarantula wobble while they walk was normal

      They're probably getting ready to molt! It's totally normal behavior. Another idea is they might just want some alone time :)

    The part with:" I can't see you, so you can't see me", is a bit cute. 🥰 But I know, always be real good to the animals, that trust us with our care. We are the stewards of this world, and generally, we are doing a piss-poor job. Sorry about the language. 😰😡🤦‍♂️

      They might be defending themselves, or just leaning against their tank walls (like my spider was doing in this pic).
