The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

One of the greatest, a force of nature, a legend, the queen of rock'n'roll, simply the best... All this has been said about Tina, but I think we may have forgotten the adjective that best describes her: a survivor. She was reborn several times from her own ashes, both artistically and personally, to accompany us for more than five decades and be part of the sentimental memory of several generations. When a figure of that caliber leaves us, something also dies inside each of us... Fortunately, as always, all the incredible music remains, her unmistakable voice, her energetic dances, her long hair, her female empowerment, her legendary legs and all the icons that she was creating throughout her career, to preserve her memory and continue to feel that she is still there.

This gave me life. Just imagine, she was abandoned by her mother and ended up becoming a mega star, living legend. No one saw a female artist like her until her. She is definitely an American icon

Most protagonist are orphans or orphan adjacent. Like Jesus who has no Earth daddy, characters like Bambi, Dorothy Gale, Dumbo, Cinderella, Aladin, Ariel, Simba, etc, are figures with a void of some kind that go on a journey of self discovery and in the process they become the hero of themselves and those they touch.

This performance on Ed Sullivan was the first time my beautiful wife had seen Tina Turner perform. Michelle was a fan and Tina an inspiration to her to this day. We had the pleasure to see Tina in 2008 and later, the show about her life in London's West End.

I can remember as a little kid hearing the adults going on and on about Tina and flocking to see her everytime they toured through our town. We kids got to see snippets like this but it wasn't until the 1980s when I finally got to see a televised full show and fell head over heels. Then finally in 1990 caught her in live concert during her Foreign Affair tour. What an experience....and each live concert I saw just got better and better. Some of the most memorable experiences of my life and I feel lucky to have lived in those times.

Noticed that Ed Sullivan put his arm around Tina Turner and held her hand in 1969 when only a year before, in 1968, Petula Clark got into hot water for putting her arm around Harry Bellafonte? Ed Sullivan was part of the cataclysmic change in American society

She just touched his arm, and people thought the world ended.
I like to think that Ed Sullivan did it on purpose to make a point and that he was ahead of his time.

The Ikette with the long hair is Claudia Lennear. She was in the film 20 Feet from Stardom. Claudia dated Mick Jagger and David Bowie. She is often cited as inspiration for the Rolling Stones song "Brown Sugar" and Bowie's "Lady Grinning Soul."

Beyonce once tried to do a Tina performance on stage but she didn't have a patch on Miss Turner! Some artists you just DO NOT try to imitate. I think Ike, as abusive as he was, was a very talented musician. He could spot the SOUL/Rock n Roll quality in an artist. He brought the SOUL out of Tina that's for sure. Just a shame the drugs turned him into a maniac and a shame his legacy will always be remembered for his abusive treatment toward Tina :(

I would've LOVED to have seen Ike & Tina live, but, alas, I wasn't born until 1974. I think Ike simply doesn't get the credit for any of his talents. He was a lousy husband, but a bad ass musician! That movie really ruined his reputation beyond repair!
