This was in Texas on behalf of The Ed Sullivan Show. They were doing a benefit for the Vietnam Veterans who got injured. In later years A Story about a Vietnam Veteran would be the inspiration for Daniel by Elton John.
The was actually the first version of the song to be recorded and get airplay. It was several years after this that Aretha and songwriter Marvin Gaye released their versions of this song, one that can brilliantly take any arrangement and always be a musical masterpiece.
My cousin lives in Atlanta and works in a business that has Gladys Knight as a customer, he is young and didn't know who she was when she first visited, he said she is truly one of the sweetest and friendliness people he has ever met, he has never seen her having a bad day.
My son almost ran her over at the Whole Foods in Alpharetta. Typically oblivious teenage boy not looking where he was going. Just barging out the door. I about died of embarrassment. She was actually really gracious, just accepted my apology and said she had sons too….
There's just something about her energy that is so attractive and so contagious. I'm a 60 something white man and I've been in love with Gladys Knight for 40 years.
@@anthonytaylor7928 I hardly ever hear her mentoined as much as Aretha, Diana, Patti etc when people casually talk about famous soul divas, otherwise I wouldn't have made the comment.
@@richalderson6069 Well, Aretha was in her own league. Diana had the whole Motown machine behind her. Patti has that Diva sort of ego thing. Gladys and the Pips moved around record labels, and she's just a really sweet person, not the Diva type. But she was, and still is, highly acclaimed -- along with Dionne Warwick, who is similarly modest, and also has an amazing one-of-a-kind voice. You must be on the young side, we mature folk adore Gladys!
Been a fan since 1968 when I first heard this group... I wish this kind of music was still being produced instead of the awful crap I hear now. Gladys Knight and the Pips are forever the best. God Bless.
64 years young, and I well remember hearing Gladys on AM radio!! God bless Gladys for this OUTSTANDING performance!! YOU GO!!!! GIRL!!!!! 😁😁😁😁💅💅💅💅💅💅👍👍👍
One of the all-time best groups ever. Gladys Knight is an American treasure and sweetheart. She can light up any room with her soulful voice and amazing smile.
I was only 13 years old when released & remember Gladys & this song so well. They played it on the radio non-stop. What a hit she and the Pips had. I still have that LP. It stirs delightful memories in me.
....YOU KNOW....I've had ENOUGH of this....E-NOUGH!!! ...WHEN are we gonna give 'The Empress' the R-E-S-P-E-C-T she TRULY deserves, while she's STILL with US!??? ...ALL I ever hear is, 'Diva, Diva, Whitney, Mariah, Aretha, etc...' (not taking anything from them, tho...) ...BUT... ...GLADYS discovered The Jackson Five (&, of course,The King Of Pop), gave us Memphis Soul, was the TEMPLATE of Northern Soul, The ORIGINAL Queen of 'ghetto chick' Soul, started proto-Disco, gave us those CLASSIC tracks from a BLACK-themed flick ("Claudine"), can ACT, and, sung the ULTIMATE 'Other Woman' anthem ('If I Were Your Woman')....a TRUE Pioneer!! ....Bless Miss Gladys, PLEASE.... I'm THRU...
Gladys Knight is such a force of nature, that's it's easy to overlook what great singers The Pips were as well. I love that she gives them a chance to shine here.
Gladys knight, one of the pantheon of r&b. Stunningly beautiful and a voice that can cause tremors in the ground. By the way, did anyone notice jay Z playing percussion?
Did you see the Concert that they did in 1969 with Stevie Wonder, David Ruffin and The Staple Singers amongst others. It was like the Black Version of Woodstock. Questlove of The Fugees got an Oscar Nomination for Best Documentary. I remember hearing about The Show when I was a kid.
From the Sullivan broadcast at the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in CO. Majority of patients were soldiers who served in Vietnam. The Four Tops, Carpenters and Freda Payne were also on the bill.
I bet the guys and the staff got a kick out of seeing and hearing them. And I hope all the performers didn't need to think about appearing on this episode.
Even in the tiny space between hospital beds with only a mic stand, the Pips dancing is tight, and Gladys sings like she's at the Apollo. Brilliant professionals.
This performance was recorded on film (not on video tape) at Walter Reed and the film clip became a presentation on the show as billed and dated. Therefore, 480 p.
I just learned why some of the clips are in 480p. Most of the master tapes were destroyed in a fire at UME in 2008. This was reported in the news last year. Apparently UME tried to cover it up for a long time. All that is left are low resolution copies. You will never see these clips in HD. They are gone forever.
I’m not even gonna bother trying to find words right now for how cool this is. I will, however, point out particular lyrics of one of the verses: “Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear”
Note to Ed: save the hospital show for later. Tape the act on your stage where we could hear a decent version. I know this advice is 50 years too late, but you're welcome anyway.
Marvin's version is way more memorable. Gladys can sing. But this is too fast, too "noisy" - too many voices, no ability to focus. Marvin is singing directly to the listener in a very haunting way that makes it stand out vs. this version that sounds like a ripoff of Arefa's "Respect".
I really love this song
Great stuff. The 4 Tops were on this same show too.
This aired on public TV in 1970? So like 100M people saw this? I mean, this band blows away basically everyone playing in the 2010s-2020s.

@@laminage I think this performance took place at either Fort Bliss or what is now known as Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
Staggering! I don’t care it’s distorted, it’s Gladys in her peak prime!
Believe those were Vietnam War wounded personnel she was entertaining.
What a beautiful woman. Go Gladys.
Yes-my mom used to say that!
The most polished, professional and perhaps talented group in history........Gladys Knight & The Pips!
She was big in the 60s and 70s
They were great, that’s for sure; and Gladys had the gift.

If berry would have put the same money behind Gladys and Martha he could’ve had “3 diana Ross’s”
What a powerhouse! Why isn't this lady mentioned more?

Gladys Knight’s voice!!!!!! I just wish The Pips each had individual microphones so we could hear their voices clearer.
The segment was produced "on location" at a military hospital in 1970. The production had to be kept simple.
Thanks for uploading these classic videos that never get old

Electrifying pinnacle television programming
One-third of the holy trinity GODDESES of soul Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle and GLADYS KNIGHT
Expected a typical 60s TV lip synch. This is actually live/loose as hell/sloppy. Gladys is the pinnacle. An authority.
Pure class. Thank you for this. Regards from Lima.

LOL! GO GLADYS!!!
Since when has the Ed Sullivan show been shot in a hospital! So impressive that they just stood in the isle between the beds and performed.

The way she sings “take a good look at these tears in my eyes” totally killed me man 😊
This must have been on a stage.
They had trombones, and we never saw the drummer .
That amazing voice of hers and that fancy Pips footwork
The best thing about this is in Spotify , next it should be on record
