Outstanding video. Simply outstanding. I've not had a trapline since 1979 when I was a kid in Clearfield County. You make me realize how much I miss it. Very much appreciated, Adam.
Thanks John! I am going to try to film more trapping this year, work and life really got in the way the past few years but I did really well on K9 last year. Glad you enjoyed.
Awesome season boys. Im a new trapper and have learned loads from your videos. Wish i could come down and tag along for some first hand knowledge. This country was founded on the traditions you boys keep alive. Thats commendable. Keep at em.
Thanks Leatherwood Outdoors. I just bought my first #1.5 Duke and wasn't sure how exactly to set the trap. This video showed me to put the dog over the jaw which is what I was NOT doing. Thanks again. Looking forward to getting into trapping. Loved your trap prepping video as well. Thanks again!!
Jim Parker You do realize you just made a life threatening statement to another human being? When no one did anything to you? Do you realize what could happen to you over this? First let me say this, the fact that you have your reply button turned off speaks volumes. Second, if your dog was in my trap, I would call the authorities because your dog was not on a leash. If it was on a leash, I would have you arrested for trespassing. Third, what is the world are you talking about hunting for? This is a trapping video! You obviously know absolutely nothing about anything about stewardship and management of the land and wildlife. ALL This proves is that you hate, you show no love towards anyone and if you do, its all conditional!
+brandon bone ever hear of a leash law? most towns its illegal to have a dog off a leash and just running around. and if a dog is running around in the woods without you that's your problem for not watching your dog.
+Ryan Burgess shows how little you know about the responsibilities of a trapper. There are many regulations for trapping that when breached it makes the trappers responsible!! NOT the dogs or dog owners. Next time think about what you say before you say it...you may not look so dumb
Trapping is a dying skill. This is an EXCELLENT video and is a PERFECT example f the wise use of our natural resources. People who are against this are acting purely on emotion, and the ironic thing is, the ones against this will NEVER have the reverence, respect and love for these animals that this trapper does. VERY well done!
Really nice video I enjoyed very much. Usually I don't watch trapping videos but I watched this one and I think that this is a really good video. I actually really enjoyed the part at the end. I hope you will keep posting trapping videos and just more videos in general because I enjoy them all.
Great video! So glad you're being respectful of the other side. They often tend to not extend the same courtesy but arguing back and name calling doesn't make it better. Great philosophy! Keep up the good work. Wildlife managers like myself applaud and appreciate your work. Thank you for being an ethical trapper and for logically explaining why you choose to trap!
great video. some good quality fur there. I just wish some people had some respect and instead of trashing your videos, to just stay quite and close it. looking forward to upcoming vids!
hey, brother, great video. I tried to start trapping last year, but failed pretty badly. lol. I for sure learned on where to set some traps. Thanks for the time put in to make this video. - a friend in Tennessee
Cool video. Don't see a whole lot of trapping nowadays. Use to, that was the way people survived the cold winters; by trading furs for household needs. Always enjoy your videos. Only one thing I would comment on as in having an opinion. It doesn't matter what you do, somebody is going to shoot you down over it. Even if you were out in the ocean trying to save a whale tangled in a net. Yep, saw it happen. lol I have found emoticons to be the best way to handle crusaders without a clue. Take care guys and keep em coming!
Awesome video. You guys should make a video strictly based on the 30 minute forward portion. Just a thought. Y'alls videos reach a lot of people. I've always enjoyed watching them! Hope you keep them coming. Good luck this turkey season.
Nice video. I used to do some trapping in my teen years and kept with it until about 20. Mostly my friends were very much into it and I would go out on their runs with them. I enjoyed it very much. Loved those long hikes in the woods and made some extra cash too! I am surprised there is still money in it.
Ray Plays Guitar Thanks, being in the outdoors and becoming familiar with the habits of the animals is what the appeal is for me. The monetary gain is minimal.
+Little Bear , I'm a Jesus Freak with compassion but it clearly says in the Bible the animals are put here for us to harvest.. I trap myself. You should look up some of the verses :)
Irish trapper I just realized I included Ireland in with the British Isles. Not sure about your opinion in that regard, so let me rephrase to the UK and Ireland.
im not a hunter or trapper but videos like theses make it look as something to try tooks awesome and ur right bout the people against trapping its there opinion and its ur opinion and they should respect it keep the videos coming
Does shooting thsm between the eyes affect skinning? I was skinning some muskrat at a trapping camp I went to, and we had broken skulls that left bone chunks in places even after we fleshed. Would it be better going I the heart?
Love to video. I understand why you do what you do, I'm 16 and me and my father had a nice trap line and where successful wish we could have got a nice coyote like you though! But anyways keep up the videos!
Thanks for the great video im taking the trappers Ed course right now and hope to use the money i get from skins to help pay for my firs car and i was wondering what the usuall price for skins are
I like what you did filming , but a suggestion maybe bring someone along so you can show what you do setting the traps and how/ why you set them where you did. Love what you say at the end of video and how true.
Toti Struck Thanks for the kind words. I wish I could bring someone with me every day but that's just not possible. I made it a point to go out with some of my friends to show what they do, it's hard to do all of this before working for 9 hours a day as it is.
+Pennsylvania Outdoors Excellent I am glad I could have been of help. Eventually i'd like to film species specific trapping videos that are a little more in depth.
You guys make some excellent and informative videos. This is one of your best, and you guys are all very accomplished outdoorsmen. I haven't done much trapping myself, but my son shows an interest in it so I am hoping that we can try it together and have some success. A few questions: how do you do your live releases-I have seen guys use a partial sheet of plywood with a notch at the bottom for separation from the animal. Also, how are fur prices holding up these days? I really appreciate the last few minutes of this video, well said. Did you guys do much coyote hunting this winter? Didn't get out much down here in Perry County, kind of tough to get guys to hunt when it's 5 below zero at night!
050larz Thank you. I use a catch pole to release animals, a Possum you can usually just pick up like you would a cat by it's neck scruff, but use caution. The plywood sheet does work but I really don't have the room for it in my trapping vehicle. Use caution when using the catch pole, I use a bandoleer style hold for raccoon's because they tend to struggle and I don't want to injure them. Fur prices are up and down, but I don't really pay attention. If you are trapping to make a profit I suggest overtime at work as a better option. I predator hunt for fox, but we did call a few coyotes in with no shot. They are elusive.
Two things I've gathered from reading these comments, people hate trappers and trapping because its a animal but yet they don't realize the animal populations don't regulate themselves. Just like humans animals will breed out of control
Are you a human apart of that 7.5 billion? Then you're apart of the own problem you face....unless you committed suicide, you are just as guilty....do you see how illogical that argument becomes? Also...yes, man has contributed to the decline of many of species before State Fish and Wildlife agencies intervened and came up with the best management practices for stable populations of these animals. Do some reading about the North American Wild Turkey (a great example).
Great video. This year was my first year trapping in Erie and Crawford counties in Pa. Due to the weather it was a tough year, better for ice fishing than trapping. Still had a blast, caught my first fox and 8 beaver in the week we had without to much ice. Keep the videos coming.
another great video guys. how much are the furs worth roughly? id like to see more dispatching maybe one or two in each vid just to see how you guys do it
Please dont make excuses to these tree huggers, they all eat meat or fish but they dont like to see where it came from, you carry on lads because the natural world is cruel. They think that thanksgiving turkey was made on a 3dprinter. Nice vids.
Hey guys thx for making these great vids u guys are some great guys do a good thing and I agree with you guys that this is not cruel you guys have had such a good impact on me and I have decided to start making new vids with in the next week or so
Where do u get you rail road plates from if u buy them what are the going rates for them. Great trapping keep up the good work I got 2 reds 1 rat 7 grinners.
RW Outdoors I am lucky in the fact that the business I work for had a condemned railroad so I was able to acquire them legally that way. You must possess a receipt for them as it is a Federal Offense to possess any railroad equipment without verification and transfer of sale. Kovalchick corporation in Indiana PA does have them, also, call around scrap yards more short line railroads are being condemned around the state.
Oh the people who claim trappers have shit aim or lack of woodsmanship. I've tried trapping, it's an art and very hard to master. Traps need to be meticulously adjusted. The environment needs to be sent free and looks good. But also needs the trap to snap. Then the people with aim. In my state, you can only use shotgun. You with rifles are at a privilege to use them. I'd didn't like the factor of reloading so I got into archery and in line muzzleloaders. I shot compound for a few years and decided it was too easy and moved to recurve. So I can tell you, its not really about being a crack shot. And if that's you goal in hunting than you are far from the mark then. You should be enjoying the woods. My last point is that these are furbearers. Coyote and raccoon specifically are nuance animals which will always spring up in numbers so might as well have what i call the 24-7 hunter do the work for you. A lot of trapping I've seen is land management for better deer hunting.
I also like the questions that concern the broken legs. I mainly work with duke #2 traps for coyote, should probably get #3s. Anyway to answer a previous question about broken legs with dogs at least, they are usually self inflicted due to a struggle. In my state you can only use flat jaws, no sharpening, no serration. While setting one this winter, i had one snap on the first phalange of my index middle and ring and the metacarpal that the pinky extends out of. They have a nice tight grip like a over enforced hand shake but my hand and fingers were not bruised or broken in the slightest. I will say that I'm against red fox trapping in my area because you have a better chance of seeing a 170"+ deer than a red fox in my area. Damn coyotes killed them all or chased them off :( and they are so pretty of a creature.
Sonicguy95 Not jut deer, turkey, rabbit, and all kinds of small game suffer from coyote and raccoon depredation. This is even (especially?) true in urban areas.
I got question here this is entirety off topic of this video I just got a inline muzzloader for my birthday with my money it was used but in really good condition it didn't come with a mannul so I was wonder what part of the ramrod r u suppose the head of the ramrod or the bottom good video guys!!!
Well, it depends on whether you have anything on the ends of your ramrod or not. Some muzzleloaders dont come with anything on the ramrods. If there is a Jag on one end. Which is usually the end that sticks out towards the muzzle when the ramrod is not in use. That is the end that you use to clean and push your bullets down. If there are threads on each end, or no kind of jag at one end. Then you must buy a jag for cleaning and loading.
There's a lot of content in your video, but could use more detail. How do you dispatch the animal and why do you use that method? How do you skin and prep the furs? What is the deciding factor you use to keep a raccoon? As they are nuisance animals, why did you only keep ten? What is the typical price you get for a raccoon or muskrat fur? Compare that to the price in equipment and time... Or compare it to the cost of ruined crops to the farmer. Don't get me wrong, I like your video. These questions just came up after watching it. I appreciate what you said at the end. It's preaching to the choir for me, but for others it's an emotional argument that you can't win against.
Jaanmi94 Typically we just want to show catches, if we did all of that in one video it would be hours long. I dispatch the animals with a 22 short in a revolving pistol, muskrats are usually dead on arrival either by drowning or impact from a body gripper. Since much of this was self-filmed under a time constraint, I did not film dispatches. Raccoons are not selling well in the fur market these past few years, so I only kept the ones that were of highest quality. Being plentiful, no matter how many you catch you can trap the same areas year after year and you will never harm the numbers. Small raccoons have little to no value even when the fur market is up, and since they are the future breeding population they need a chance to mature, it's personal choice to let them go or harvest. The fur market is like the stock market, it can be up one minute and down the next, but I don't trap for a living so it doesn't really have a deciding factor. The cost/benefit analysis speaking economically about trapping is a null issue in my eyes. I am doing it to cull population, help out landowners and assist nature in it's task of balance. Being in nature hunting fishing and trapping is a priceless activity for me, but I don't have what I feel is an unnecessary investment in equipment which if taken care of will last a lifetime. Some might feel differently. I hope this answered some of your questions.
Also how do you find your trap locations? My uncle has some land but every time I venture out I hardly see any animals so I was wondering how to find the signs
Jacob Peters You have to target the areas between den areas and food sources. Furbearers will usually use the least path of resistance. A tractor path or intersection of a farm road splitting crops between a block of woods is an excellent spot for K9, it's all situation dependent. Raccoons will hunt and travel small woodland streams and also be in crops, so trapping culverts with permission are great places to funnel them. Mink and Muskrat you need to look for den holes and tracks. The best bet to is purchase some books pertaining to your area and read them, also look on forums such as trapperman.com
Nero Zero Thank you, I selectively harvest and I wish I could have filmed him leave because he literally was shot out of a cannon, it was pretty entertaining to watch. I got that big female coyote tanned, she really came out beautiful. I am glad that you are watching with an open mind, that is all that I really made this video for. Appreciate your comment.
***** A lot of people think it's horrible cruelity to animals because that's how the media portrays it. Even my mom thinks when you see a hide with no feet it means that the animal chewed it's feet off. I'm like no mom means the hunter cut the feet off when fleshing it -face palms- I know I was one of the crazies who hateddd hunting but then I fish so how am I any different? I just got into collecting hides didn't even think I'd own one now I have two fox's plus my 6ft coyote on it's way. Don't personally hunt but I'd love to go with a group to watch. I'm sorry you get so many ignorant haters in these videos I think you're a great hunter/trapper and I can tell you respect the animals you get.
Please pass your skills on to your children & Grandchildren! Trapping is a dying art. I Started long lining back in 1975 in Illinois. The new dog proof sets look like they preform well and save a lot of time. I have done many demonstrations using a #2 coil spring on a bare fingers to prove the trap causes no damage. The only trap I have had any damage from was a 330 Conibear that shot the trigger wire into my arm from neglect on my part in a water set. It is very sad that people don't understand maintaining the balance of nature even after we have destroyed their habitat with concrete. Mother Nature kills way more cruelly than people realize. I will be taking all my Grandchildren to Trappers Education and passing on my skills to them like I did to my children. Great Video! I see some improvements you could make in your pelt handling if your interested.
embarado smithing and woodcraft if i suspected rabies in my area i'd probably get vaccination, we haven't had rabies in my since 1886, so you know. Also, you're the one being ignorant, because you're taking things out of context.
Kuk Din mamma I'm sorry but it was you that missed the context in the first place when PETA began its Campaign quote for looks better on the animals that it does people it put hundreds and hundreds of trappers out of business because we couldn't make a living selling the four we were trapping when this happened in upstate New York the population of Raccoon exploded because there was no control of any kind on their population one year after all those trappers went out of business rabies broke out because the population had exploded to 10 times the carrying capacity went rappers are the only control on population this is what happens when they're put out of business so if you are with Peeta you're part of the problem not part of the solution as I stated people like pita 100 years ago or more demanded that trappers trap out all of the wild predators wolves coyotes Bobcat links Fisher Cats so on now they want us to stop crapping in tirely and when carrying capacity is exceeded animals starve thus making them weak and unable to fight off disease such as rabies parvo etc if you don't believe me contact your local wildlife division of deep and ask them don't be ignorant look into it
Kuk Din mamma when ya make statements like dying art for a f reason you are the mis informed and name the state that has not had a rabies out break since the 1880s i don't believe it
I can appreciate your point but I much prefer people hunting with a rifle or shotgun than trapping I don't know what happens to these animals paws or limbs, do they break or what just help me out here.
+Matt Evans They do not break sir, that would defeat the purpose of this entirely. They are restrained in a trap, when done correctly and checked often it is no different then leashing your dog.
+Tyrander165 Despite what lure makers will tell you, scent doesn't magically waft 10 miles into a raccoons nostrils. The white cup stands out in the dark and is eye appeal for them to investigate. The key here is setting a trap where Raccoons travel, again location is everything. Once they are closer then the scent takes in effect. I also use fryer and fish oil along trails to guide them to my traps. Rodents will clean your bait out nightly and this gives the drive-by trapper a visual reference if his set needs maintenance.
joey243win They are case skinned and fleshed, and according to how to be offered some are turned fur in or out. I use a board to pull the skin taught and hang to dry in heat and fan.
Look I don't love people doing this because I think it's personally gross and mean but I totally understand where your coming from your doing something you enjoy doing and you guys are following something you like to do and I think that's awesome so keep up the good work!
really great vid. learned so much with rats and yotes. I liked your talk at the end but as many times as I put my hand into a leg hold etc. the PITA posers cry we are so inhumane (while they choke on their beef tenderloin.) They give their $10 a month and think they're changing the world. We help farmers, ranchers and other species and no one (save the State biologists) even know. cheers to you and more vids. JJ
it depends on the footage that they got. They are still trapping for beaver right now. Going to be a couple weeks till they are done. Usually we have all the footage up by now but they are going to see what other kind of footage they can get. Like I said, its all on how much good footage they get.
***** You can put them in buttermilk over night (makes them tender) and then take them apart. Now brown the legs and back in a good pan and cook it all for 20-30min in the sauce...its a bit like rabbit but darker meat. Enjoy!
Outstanding video. Simply outstanding. I've not had a trapline since 1979 when I was a kid in Clearfield County. You make me realize how much I miss it. Very much appreciated, Adam.

wire or board stretchers?
Great video. Love how he addressed how the traps don't hurt the animals. Just wondering if Shane and hunter will have some videos of trapping too?
you did a really super good job and explaining traps and did a great job with video and audio thank you for making this

Irish trapper Are you trapping in Ireland or the States?
I trap in ireland. Just for conservation. The gunclub gets 1000 points for a fox 2000 points for mink.
Irish trapper I just realized I included Ireland in with the British Isles. Not sure about your opinion in that regard, so let me rephrase to the UK and Ireland.
Excellent video! Good commentary at the end as well.
Great video guys. That's a good stack of fur you got there great work. Really like the longer videos, take care.

Kinda of a throw back to the days before civilization. With the huge loss of habitat, what purpose do trappers serve? Grins?
+Eustacius just because there is a loss of habitat doesn't mean there isn't an abundance of animals in habitat that cant support the excess.
Still got a fur market man.
Beautiful!
Nice catches! Great video!
love the video bud, got some nice catches, keep on trapping I know I will.. Salutes and respect from Canada
watched again , great video
Great video! Good job!
Please dont make excuses to these tree huggers, they all eat meat or fish but they dont like to see where it came from, you carry on lads because the natural world is cruel. They think that thanksgiving turkey was made on a 3dprinter. Nice vids.
Awesome videos keep them coming!!!!
Great video as always!!
Hey guys thx for making these great vids u guys are some great guys do a good thing and I agree with you guys that this is not cruel you guys have had such a good impact on me and I have decided to start making new vids with in the next week or so
Great vid. You're a class act!
2bonosc Thank you very much.
hi thanks for the video good one buddy
Looking to get into trapping, myself. Good video!
Great video! Can you film your skinning technique?
Thanks! Here is one we made for raccoon. ua-cam.com/video/hXQgPCM8bxQ/v-deo.html
Great video loved it, keep them coming!!
No Debate here. Trap on and continue to trap responsibly as you do. Good on Ya!
Awesome video man keep making great videos!
Great video, thanks for making that.
Sonicguy95 Thank you for the kind words.
This is even (especially?) true in urban areas.
please send a link to that foothold trap that you are using with raccoons

great video. cant wait for trapping season in pa to come.
The All Around Outdoorsmen You and me both! Thanks.
Nice video and thanks for sharing.
You guys rock!thank you for the video its very educational with the explanation of it at the end
Great video buddy and we'll said. Cheers
Rabbit Hunter Thank you.
just wondering if you guys are making any trapping videos for the 2015-16 season?
+alex F Yes, I filmed all my trapping and Predator Hunting as well.
what kind of cameras do yall use an editing software great vids
Great video by the way
Keep up the great work guys! Really would love to see more trad bow hunts and trapping. Great work!!!
In another videos i seen a weasel in a foothold and it was still alive how did you dispatch it?
I'm so glad to see you let that little guy go
Nero Zero Thank you, I selectively harvest and I wish I could have filmed him leave because he literally was shot out of a cannon, it was pretty entertaining to watch.
+RODEHAWGKENNEL It's probably a dying "art" for a reason.
Also, dont try to force your hobbies upon your grandchildren.
+Kuk Din mamma when rabies runs rampant in your area you will only have your self to blame don't be so ignorant
embarado smithing and woodcraft if i suspected rabies in my area i'd probably get vaccination, we haven't had rabies in my since 1886, so you know. Also, you're the one being ignorant, because you're taking things out of context.
Kuk Din mamma I'm sorry but it was you that missed the context in the first place when PETA began its Campaign quote for looks better on the animals that it does people it put hundreds and hundreds of trappers out of business because we couldn't make a living selling the four we were trapping when this happened in upstate New York the population of Raccoon exploded because there was no control of any kind on their population one year after all those trappers went out of business rabies broke out because the population had exploded to 10 times the carrying capacity went rappers are the only control on population this is what happens when they're put out of business so if you are with Peeta you're part of the problem not part of the solution as I stated people like pita 100 years ago or more demanded that trappers trap out all of the wild predators wolves coyotes Bobcat links Fisher Cats so on now they want us to stop crapping in tirely and when carrying capacity is exceeded animals starve thus making them weak and unable to fight off disease such as rabies parvo etc if you don't believe me contact your local wildlife division of deep and ask them don't be ignorant look into it
Kuk Din mamma
when ya make statements like dying art for a f reason you are the mis informed and name the state that has not had a rabies out break since the 1880s i don't believe it
What part of PA are you in I live about 20 minutes away from Philadelphia and we don't have muskrats ?
North East Rabbitry Western PA. I am sure there are Muskrats somewhere around you.
you were great I found your video to be very educational. I was able to take away a lot of good tactics away from it.
+Trevor Harriger Excellent, always like to read that.
I have a question for you guy's what can I do against ticks and lice in the fur
I love you videos I learn a lot from it
Wash it after you skin it or put inside garbage bag and spray some raid after skinning. Flesh after dry.
Covering up the scent lure with the cup seems counter productive. I would put it up a couple of feet on a stick so the scent would carry.
How do you skin your catch, they look like they have been pressed, do you sleeve them ?
joey243win They are case skinned and fleshed, and according to how to be offered some are turned fur in or out. I use a board to pull the skin taught and hang to dry in heat and fan.
That's cool thank you for sharing this. I've been wondering how it was done n after watching your video I'm going to get into it
what part of pa are you guys in ik shane had a redbank soccer shirt in the turtle trapping video
great video! keep up the great work!
This is fun way to make extra money but it is work any way you look at it. Looks like a good year.
What do you do to let them loose if you do not decide to harvest them?
+Brady Bingham I use a catch pole and release them. You will see in this years video that practice with the catch pole on film.
Were do you get the traps i have a rakon at my moms and a skonk
JJ
will you post a video of you, hunter, shane, and tothe's trapping season?
it depends on the footage that they got. They are still trapping for beaver right now. Going to be a couple weeks till they are done. Usually we have all the footage up by now but they are going to see what other kind of footage they can get. Like I said, its all on how much good footage they get.
Alright, you guys are awesome
Are kill traps illegal in PA? I want to get into trapping but I don't want to harm anyone's hound or bird dog.
nice video and nice catches
Muskrat is actually pretty good eatin...so if you get 'em alive they don't need to go to waste... regards from Germany! Love LWO
Willi M. So I have heard, I have a few cleaned and frozen to try for cooking.
***** You can put them in buttermilk over night (makes them tender) and then take them apart. Now brown the legs and back in a good pan and cook it all for 20-30min in the sauce...its a bit like rabbit but darker meat. Enjoy!
