Barbara Hutton was staying at The Waldorf-Astoria back in the day. She took a liking and a shine to an operator's telephone voice and asked her what she'd like as a gift. The operator replied in a very glib voice: "Oh, a sable coat". The next day, a sable coat arrived and was delivered to the telephone room.
They also sued her for non-payment of her bill! She died with only $3,500 in the bank. Her estimated worth at one time of $42 million would be $750 million in today’s money. Sadly, she never found true love or happiness and her over-spending, including being quite generous; led to her being nearly bankrupt.
amazing performance by Farrah, she captured the fragile and lost sadness in her eyes and the hopelessness of having all the material wealth known to man but never finding happiness...
It’s so sad when children get left money they have no idea how to manage. They end up with nothing so soon. The loss of her mother at an early age And the horrid relationships she had with men including her father show us that the age of denying mental illness and mental health needs wreaked havoc on many many lives.
And to think she died with only $3,500 in the bank! I think most of her jewelry was stolen from her over the years. The biography of her life was so sad!
Does it matter? She was a philanthropist, but she was adored, blood diamonds, from the suffering of many African men! But who cares? Look how beautiful they are, right?
@@totukimou You could use that definition to describe the jewels of countless rich, famous women, such as Elizabeth Taylor to the late Queen Elizabeth II of England! Not really. These older-cut diamonds from less advanced countries were poorly executed by European modern standards and they did not sparkle or impress because the design of the cut was not the right one. They also often contained flaws. They are very frequently recut, even today.
I loved Woolworths. Got my first lipstick there when I was 15 years old. Remember picking it out. Also my pleated neck scarf for tap dancing school. What a happy girl I was and am still. Thank you Woolworths.
I did think how sad she lost all the money. Then I think well she couldn't take the money with her when she died so as long as she had fun really all that mattered.
Though more dangerous now, it was still dangerous then. Most people with jewelry like that wear it to private parties and events. Just like people have bodyguards, jewelry has its own “jewelry guards.” It is extremely expensive to maintain security for jewelry of this caliber.
@@Freaysclaw56 Yes. My husband recently asked me to stop wearing my diamond wedding rings, my gold watch and a large sapphire/diamond ring in public. He's afraid of violence, not the theft itself. Hi there
She was a prisoner of her own wealth she displayed like a Christmas tree. Her insecurities were enormous!!!

To love another & be loved by that person should be the aim.
Why? She enjoyed all the luxuries most people never see in their lifetime. She could use her wealth to give love to many unfortunate.

When most women wear top tier jewelry I notice the jewels. When Elizabeth Taylor wears jewels she outshines them with her beauty. 😂

Such a lonely person deprived of her share of true love. Her jewelry collection was impeccable. Stunning in everyway and especially when worn by her.
Which husband gave her that neckless, all her husbands, except Cary Grant, were pennyless!
In these times you'd have to be insane to wear any jewels of that value out in public for fear of being robbed or killed.
