Joe was easily the best side character in earlier seasons. He was not only the funniest of Peter's friends (especially with his yelling) but I always saw him as an interest character dive into how disable people have to go through life. Despite this disability he was still able to be a person, he was short tempered and well respected as a cop, even his relationship with Bonnie wasn't so hate filled. Now he's just an excuse to make the same joke "He's crippled get it? His wife hates him because he's crippled" like wasn't part of the point of Joe to showcase he could still do things despite this setback?
I felt like pre-flanderisation joe was genuinely great disability rep. He was an example of how you could incorporate a disabled character into a comedy show without being cynical/punching down, and give wheelchair users a break from only being in melodramatic dramas with characters who resent their lives now that they’re wheelchair bound. Modern family guy managed to make an amalgamation of the two worst things: shitty ‘dark’ comedy and the dreary melodrama of ‘I can never enjoy life again but I’ll eventually be used as inspiration porn for the able bodied protagonist’.
Comedy is about subverting expectations. Which often translates into being offensive, yes, but offensive does not equal subversive. "Hey look Joe is a cripple, look at him be a sad sack of shit in his wheelchair" isn't subversive, it's only offensive. "Hey look Joe is a cripple but he's about to take out the trash, how will he manage that? Maybe he'll have to put the garbage in his lap or a wagon or something? Nope, he wears hand shoes and carries the garbage on his ass." That subverts expectations. It may not be their best joke about Joe being crippled but it's at least a joke.
I listened to the DVD commentary for "The Man with Two Brians" and heard a comment that pretty much solidified how the writers don't give a crap about flanderising the characters. When Joe swims out to save Peter and Brian from drowning, one of the crew members mentions how Joe went from a guy who overcame his disability to a pathetic waste of a human being. I'm with Trey & Matt on this one; the people who work on FG are lazy.

I feel like if they wanted to they could use his miserable self esteem while doing heroic acts could be an interesting character study and a welcome addition to his depth as a character. Unfortunately they just do the "haha wheelchair" jokes too much to capitalize on that possibility.
@@landofnoone7048Awful take. Modern fg sucks but they can occasionally pull out some really funny stuff. Didn’t find this particular joke too funny personally
It's truly sad on what they did to Joe in recent years. He used to be well respected cop, hot tempered, and even funny. But now he's a joke basically the Aquaman of the group.
Yea, the jokes about his handicap were funny in the first place because he was presented as someone who was capable but sometimes had to work with his limitations and when he was unable to do something it'd actually catch you off guard, now it's just sad wheelchair man, really a major disservice to disabled people on top of being unfunny.
My favorite Joe moment is still the one where Brian calls him handsome and he really appreciates it, only for Brian to have to take it back. There's just something about the exchange that hits hard. Like just a simple compliment made his day.
Yknow, in that Niagra Falls episode, I feel like they could've given him a nice character shift. He could've had a big "I wanna live" change for like the thrill of saving people, or how he wanted to keep living because he can really help people. It would've been a nice character moment, but no. They made him have a wholesome moment for 3 seconds and then next week it goes back to hell.

Ironically one of my favourite Episodes of Family Guy is actually the terrorist one where all four of them are stuck on a plain. Simply just because of how nice Peter, Cleveland and Joe are toward each other and how real a lot of their interactions feel. Especially when Joe and Cleveland go into the hull of the plane and they have that conversation about what they're gonna say when they beat the hijackers. It's just SO charming... Quagmire obviously kind of ruins it with how willing he is to let Peter die but the other three are super cute in that episode
Joe in seasons 1-7: A brave, good hearted cop who helps people in their time of need and is a good role model to people. Joe in seasons 8-present: Now a cowardly, weak, and spinless cop who is often treated like a punching bag just like Meg, and never bothers to arrest people who harm him and others. Edit: Wow! I got over a thousand likes! Thanks!
The only thing I liked about Bonnie is the that she’s voiced by Jennifer Tilly. Just the idea of two of my favourite actors who have great sounding voices playing a married couple in Family Guy was one of the reasons I became a fan
Damn it's crazy how much joe became a disabled guy with a badass attitude to basically is the "HA HA HES IN A WHERLCHAIR HE IS SO DIFFERENTTTTT!!!" Type of character Edit: Holy crap I didn't realize I had 200 likes this is friggin sweet!
They've toned that down in the last two seasons, but it's easily my least favorite recurring joke in the whole series. I hate seeing Bonnie be so mean and nasty for him for no reason, like you still chose to marry him! She became the worst and most unlikable character ever.
As someone who has had a friend who was in a wheelchair, I never treated them differently because of it nor did I use them as the butt of a joke. When a middle schooler treats a handicapped person with more respect than an adult show that takes six months and costs a million US dollars to animate a single episode, that’s when you realize that these writers seriously have a problem.
One thing I'll give Family Guy credit for with the modern episodes is when they did the cutaway where Joe wore golf shorts, they showed what being handicapped does to your legs.
Literally I miss it when Joe was more than a cripple, he was an action hero, it showed that even if he is crippled, it still wouldn't stop him, he would always get into action and he had a healthy relationship with his wife. But now Joe is just the punching bag of crippled jokes and they made him more of a depressed character with a sad life than a heroic icon and with a terrible relationship with his wife who wants an affair behind Joe's back. Really, what happened to Family Guy? They had interesting characters with amazing concept and they just straight up took it away like it's nothing.
I really liked the "He's disabled, but he still kicks so much ass" aspect. It shows that yeah, he's on a wheelchair, and if you make fun of him, *you'll be next.*
honestly, i cant help but feel like alot of the jokes the writers gave him in later episodes is just because they think the way his voice actor makes him sound when he yells or cries is funny to them, and nothing else
I couldn't agree more. I honestly loved his character in the earliest seasons and he was probably my favorite out of all the side characters. I liked the fact that despite his physical disability he was still able to do everything he wanted to and was still a badass hero. Joe didn't let him being handicapped stop him from living life and the show never really treated him like the punching bag they do now with the exception of a few handicap jokes but they were usually minimal and well written. I just hate how they completely destroyed Joe and it's actually quite insulting what they've done to such a cool character who was such an amazing example of beating the odds and doing anything you put your mind to.
He was such an optimistic and energetic character despite his handicap in the early seasons, now he's just depressed the entire time and is just there to make handicapped jokes.
Joe is built up so godly in early family guy because it shows that despite being disabled in any way shape or form, you can still be a powerful person in society, no matter how small it may seem; what may seem small to one person is everything to another
No cap I actually love Joe's dad jokes and not cause people turn it down but because I think he's genuinely funny in those moments. Idk something about his delivery makes it so charming and I can't help but smile.
Joe then: Complex character who wants to prove his capabilities despite his disability Joe now: Haha he's in a wheelchair xD Edit: I swear you can break down every family guy character in this way, they just end up focusing on one trait and run the joke into the ground
Thank you for making this video. My name is Joe and I am handicapped. So Joe Swanson being a badass hero was awesome. I loved that characters like Jim Valmer and Joe were positive representation but as the years gone on they’ve made his wife hate him with an utter disdain that’s not even funny it’s cruel at least with Jimmy and Timmy from South Park. They are given agency to be characters on their own and get ripped on and have the same problems as Kyle Stan Kenny and cartman and their own episodes with Nathan and mimsy. It’s fucking disgraceful what they’ve done with Joe. He’s one of the only handicapped characters on television for representation and I want better representation
They definitely have played into wheelchair jokes, but they were always there in my opinion. I think they just got lazy and started making them more prevalent. The biggest problem with Joe's character is his family. Both Bonnie and Kevin are throwaway characters only used to setup jokes or situations. They're so one dimensional. Kevin is, for lack of a better word, crazy. And Bonnie is just a miserable housewife. Since season 1, I've viewed Joe as a heroic, multi-dimensional character looking for acceptance. However they've dumbed it down in recent years and kind of just made it "sad life, sad guy, begging for approval"
It's staggering how they changed their views on Joe. When we first see him crying, it's sad and awkward enough for everyone to leave. The joke was that his friends didn't want to be in this situation so they leave in whatever way they could. But then in season 6, Chris makes Joe cry and Peter finds it funny enough to save as his ringtone. Joe's pain becomes the source of jokes surrounding his character.
I am SO GLAD you are covering this, I've been miserable with Joe's evolution. The way he would casually fly off the handle but be ultimately harmless (which is visually exacerbated by his paraplegia) made him a sweet but flawed family man. He could spring into action when it mattered so he wasn't weak, the joke was that nothing could take this specimen of a man down. What they've turned him into is disrespectful to the character and the audience. Can't wait to watch the video. edit: when you made the poll of which family guy character evo you hated most, I voted Joe right away, so seeing this in my notifs a couple days later was SUCH a treat
I remember noticing that Joe went from a respected member of the group, to being "the dad joke everyone groans at", to then being clowned on every waking moment of his life.. it's so bizarre
Mark took 1 minute 4 seconds to mention Joe is paralysed, which is 1 minute and 4 seconds longer than it takes for modern Family Guy episodes to mention it
There’s so much the show could do to make the show adult and speak to their audience about dark topics people go through and overcome, like with joe they could basically show how meaningful he is to the group regardless of being handicapped, or maybe Brian, instead of being a complete ass in the show have him be a good guy again and show that because he’s a dog he gets used by people or treat him like a dog even though he can function like any other human being and overcome it, but instead the characters are either used as a punching bag or turn them into terrible people for dumb laughs
3:53 this bit of animation really makes me happy for some reason. Just the way Joe waves and rolls his wheelchair seems really inviting. You don't really see that in new FG episodes
Theory: the Family Guy writing staff intentionally makes bad episodes, so people would stop watching it and Fox would cancel it so they can do other stuff
This really puts a damper on Joe's placement on the great Patrick Warburton ranking. Between greats like Flynn Skylanders, Kronk, Puddy Seinfeld, and how could I not mention the exquisite, Ken from bee movie, I am not sure where this hit or miss character will end up.
I feel like this is an alternate reality where Ls Mark decided to make a Joe Swanson video instead of a Brain Griffin video. The intro gives me that vibe so much
Joe's lawn = his character Writers: To the Petercopter! The handicapped jokes can be funny as one-off random jokes (like Joe's nemesis the First Step). But the jokes rely on Joe's positivity and optimism to counteract the sad undertones. But since Joe himself became sad and pathetic, the jokes no longer work.
I think it shows how recently handicapped people experience life. When Joe moved in. He was recently injured. So he was still in peak physical shape. His wife loved him and thankful he's alive, but as the show went on. Bonnie starts to despise him and plots his death. Cheating with another paraplegic is still dumb. Joe falls into a deep depression after realizing his health has fallen and people stopped caring about him.
Only have related, but Patrick Warburton is easily one of my favorite voice actors ever. The problem is that I heard him in Skylanders as Flynn first, so I can only hear Flynn coming from Joe. It’s an eternal loop.
A thing I do not like about any of these shows is how the main characters never change while side characters does. Like nowadays in Simpsons and Family Guy many of the background people look like humans, which make the main cast look really offputting when out next to.
That's been a problem for a while, with celebrities As Themselves they basically just make them literally the celebrity but with yellow skin (unless the celebrity isn't white in real life), so it looked super weird even back in like season 3 of the simpsons
100%!! I especially notice it in that all the main cast has exaggerated head shapes, but the background characters are all fairly well proportioned. It’s really off putting to see massive cartoon head shapes next to normal size and shaped heads
My favorite joke in all of Family Guy still is when Peter invites Evelyn to sit with Joe and Quagmire at the Clam. Peter is acting like a literally child with Evelyn, saying things like “Evelyn even let me drive the car!” and she responds with “Only in the parking lot. But you were a good little navigator.” Quagmire has none of it and vaults over the table to leave, saying “Yeah, I just remembered I gotta get the fuck out of here” or something like that. Peter and Evelyn then look at Joe, there is awkward silence, and then Joe says “Well God said I could walk just one time. I was saving it for Susie’s wedding day, but…” and then he gets out of his wheelchair and walks away
I knew it would be a Joe video, judging by the community posts. I hope you make more videos focused on recurring/supporting characters like this- some recurring characters in shows are way cooler and better than some main characters in shows.

Joe has a great potential both as a funny character and more complex one. Him coming to terms with the fact hes disabled would definitively be interesting to see, giving the character a much needed depth, as well as more wisdom and maturity.
Btw loving these Family Guy character analysis videos. Its refreshing to see the show in its early state and then comparing to how the characters have changed to be more unlikeable as the show got shittier. Joe was always strange to me. The character itself will always go down in my mind as one of the stand outs in Family Guy, and one of Patrick Warburton's best roles. But I just can't remember a time in the series when he wasn't being made fun of for being disabled and that was his character. So it was interesting to see him actually be respected by his peers in the early ones. Its just as you said tho: Family Guy can choose to write amazing stories for its characters. The staff on it just chooses not to and prefers to take the safe, offensive humor route because they don't see it more than just a dumb adult comedy.
What I really want to see is a spin off of family guy where joe, stewey, and Brian all realise how far the rest of the town has fallen into madness (referring to how bad the writing and characters are in modern family guy) and all deciding to leave town together So they leave, and the show is about them all trying to find a place to settle down and just live, but the new characters the trio meet are actually realistic characters that aren’t really fazed by an extremely smart unaging baby and a sapient immortal dog I just think that would be an interesting show concept
I have two of the Joe Swanson action figures that became a meme a few years back. It's sad to see how such a still iconic character has kinda become just sort of there, when he was such a fundamental character in the early and mid seasons of the show for some of its best episodes.
Honestly I was reading something and I heard the opening of "when I was a young kid I liked the adult comedy series Family Guy." It really kind of hit home how much all of our parents kind of did not care what we watched. It's like our generation's version of animated Flintstones cigarette commercials
I hate this kind of comment. "all of our parents" we all have different parents and we're all different ages. People always seem to assume everyone watching one video is "our generation" some people here are way older than you.
@@FrenkTheJoy okay if it doesn't apply to you then don't comment don't get all butthurt when I don't include your generation. I am in the same age group as the Creator I'm sorry you can't relate to neglectful parents letting you watch family guy at an early age
@@FrenkTheJoy and I included an older generation by calling back to the Flintstone cigarette ads so unless you're one of the generations in between and got left out then idk where the hate is coming from
The part I hate also with Joe is that they eventually just gave him the Meg treatment of just socially awkward disgusting weirdo. Not being able to have a conversation or just barely say or be into something rando weird everyone else puts him down for.
There's so much about early Family Guy I never realized how much I missed till very recently (cuz of Cartoon's that Curse's Season 1 episode) but Joe being an awesome guy definitely wasn't high on the list mainly because I never paid much mind to Joe. I think it's certainly the fact they portrayed him as a man capable of so much DESPITE his disability because I was always like "He's just Joe." Also as kid who was watching Family Guy WAY TOO YOUNG when it aired on Adult Swim it definitely gave me a mindset of not seeing any wheelchair bound person like Joe as a person in a wheelchair but just... as a person and really I think that's one of the coolest things early Family Guy was able to do. Also way to make me tear up a bit with scoring History to the closing remarks about Joe.
When it comes to Joe, I actually think it's fine to have some moments where he loses faith in himself and have some episodes about that. Being in his situation could take a toll on you after a while. The problem is that they never really explored that properly and just uses it for cheap laughs. Having an arc where he would re-learn to love life after it going sour for a while would have been awesome!
"The problem is that they never really explored that properly and just uses it for cheap laughs" I mean, yeah, but that's also just how family guy is with most of its characters. If we're looking for characetr development, family guy is not the show to go to, lol
@@dolph8008 I mean, I’m not saying it wouldn’t be an improvement; it probably would. But it’s just not how FG has ever worked. It’s a fun show, but there’s really not much there below the surface.
Sometimes it is funny when Joe can’t do something because of his wheelchair. Yet it’s only funny when this happens if nobody comments on it at all, or at least only Joe comments on it. Something like Joe saying “I don’t know what you expected me to do in a new sports car, Peter. I can’t even use my legs to push the pedals… I guess I can pretend to drive it with my imagination, but then I’ll look even more like a freak” and then move on. I also really like the episodes where they use Joe’s wheelchair as a quick gag on how it can sometimes be useful. For example, in the episode where Meg’s new boyfriend is an escaped convict, Joe chases him downhill. Meg shouts “no, don’t go downhill!” because she wants him to escape, but it’s too late… Gravity is on Joe’s side and he easily catches up to and arrests the convict
The writers could've really benefited listening to some disabled comedians. Like you said the best jokes with him involve looking at a situation form his unique perspective. But more often they just rely on the able bodied characters perspective of him.
Out of every side character they ruined Joe is by far the one that suffered the most. Its a real shame to see one of my favorite characters in family guy be reduced to nothing but a punching bag. It's just sad
Hey remember when Joe was brave hearted badass? Like when he got his legs melted off, a giant mutant rat comes up and his only response is “BRING IT OOOOOONNN!”?

Ah yes, my favorite Family Guy character, Brain
agreed it's a waste of a funny and talented guy.
Compare that to The Venture Bros. He was excellent in that.
Yea peters brain did go downhill quite fast
Shut up lol like what? Are you always this dramatic
I feel like if they wanted to they could use his miserable self esteem while doing heroic acts could be an interesting character study and a welcome addition to his depth as a character. Unfortunately they just do the "haha wheelchair" jokes too much to capitalize on that possibility.
Agree. Give Joe the Shinji treatment.
"Holy crip, he's a crapple."
That line always makes me laugh.
Yeah, one simple, but working joke still more funny than any over the top edgy dark jokes of Family Guy nowadays
@u know me XD
the seaman
Yea, the jokes about his handicap were funny in the first place because he was presented as someone who was capable but sometimes had to work with his limitations and when he was unable to do something it'd actually catch you off guard, now it's just sad wheelchair man, really a major disservice to disabled people on top of being unfunny.

What episode is it I swear I remember it it's great.

The only thing I liked about Bonnie is the that she’s voiced by Jennifer Tilly. Just the idea of two of my favourite actors who have great sounding voices playing a married couple in Family Guy was one of the reasons I became a fan

I swear Joe only exist now just for the writers to make jokes about his and Bonnie’s marriage.
"haha his relationship is terrible and deeply unhealthy"
What That means?
They've toned that down in the last two seasons, but it's easily my least favorite recurring joke in the whole series. I hate seeing Bonnie be so mean and nasty for him for no reason, like you still chose to marry him! She became the worst and most unlikable character ever.
Why?
As someone who has had a friend who was in a wheelchair, I never treated them differently because of it nor did I use them as the butt of a joke. When a middle schooler treats a handicapped person with more respect than an adult show that takes six months and costs a million US dollars to animate a single episode, that’s when you realize that these writers seriously have a problem.
One thing I'll give Family Guy credit for with the modern episodes is when they did the cutaway where Joe wore golf shorts, they showed what being handicapped does to your legs.
Honestly there's a lot of things that would make you realize the writers seriously have a problem sooner.
They had interesting characters with amazing concept and they just straight up took it away like it's nothing.
as a disabled person agreed "haha he's in a wheelchair laugh at him he's not like us" is not funny.
I bet you feel real good with using cripple to indicate us "bad disabled """""people""""" who let their disability be a goddamn disability"
I really liked the "He's disabled, but he still kicks so much ass" aspect. It shows that yeah, he's on a wheelchair, and if you make fun of him, *you'll be next.*
As a disabled person, I'll mention that cripple isn't really a word we use to describe disabled people as it's rude tbh. Just say disabled
@@LJNorthey As a disabled person, people can use 'cripple' if they want.
It's called freedom of speech and it's not 'rude'.

Does Bonnie have a character outside of secretly hating Joe, cheating on him, and planning his "accidental" murder?
She's also a drug mule. And that's about it. Garbage human being, much like most other characters in the show now.
Being hot is the only one I can think of
Does being voiced by one of my favorite voice actresses count?
she used to be a sweet caring woman… who cared for her disabled husband :(
Being present for like 5 years
honestly, i cant help but feel like alot of the jokes the writers gave him in later episodes is just because they think the way his voice actor makes him sound when he yells or cries is funny to them, and nothing else
I think Joe represents Family guy as a series. Once respected and admired to bullied forgotten and laughed at.
Joe then: Complex character who wants to prove his capabilities despite his disability
Joe now: Haha he's in a wheelchair xD
Edit: I swear you can break down every family guy character in this way, they just end up focusing on one trait and run the joke into the ground

I knew it was gonna be a character study about Joe.
How did you know?
I had a hunch

@@BBWahoo 🤯🤯🤯
I love how he starts almost every family guy video of his the same, hope other people noticed that to
Joe is surprisingly good Paraplegic rep and few of the jokes about his condition are mean-spirited early on
As opposed to now???
>joe tells a dad joke

Literally 198joe
I remember noticing that Joe went from a respected member of the group, to being "the dad joke everyone groans at", to then being clowned on every waking moment of his life.. it's so bizarre
I can imagine the comments:
wHen JOe sWaNSON said it’s Swanson’ tIMe in the early seasons it made me cRY.
Mark took 1 minute 4 seconds to mention Joe is paralysed, which is 1 minute and 4 seconds longer than it takes for modern Family Guy episodes to mention it
That Joe episode where hes introduced shows how good the show used to be. Something about seeing how this show changed is almost heartbreaking
I think the only thing I like about Bonnie is that she’s voiced by Jennifer Tilly.
Old episodes seemed to be a lot more creative with their "shots"
Theory: the Family Guy writing staff intentionally makes bad episodes, so people would stop watching it and Fox would cancel it so they can do other stuff
I've heard of that before
I think Joe perfectly described his character in the future by saying "Wow that was the worst piece of crap I've ever seen."
Never watched Family Guy, but that makes these videos more entertaining.
The intro gives me that vibe so much
I love how the intro is the exact same in almost every family guy video. Always when I was a young boy, around so…
Joe's lawn = his character
Writers: To the Petercopter!
That’s a good take.
I like how this starts out like the Brian character analysis, but then diverts into a joe character analysis.
I loved back when Joe would roll into the bad guys while shouting it's joeing time
Then he’d Joe all his enemies
Only have related, but Patrick Warburton is easily one of my favorite voice actors ever. The problem is that I heard him in Skylanders as Flynn first, so I can only hear Flynn coming from Joe. It’s an eternal loop.
Yeah I struggle to hear a lot of Warburton roles as anything but Kronk from Emperor's New Groove.
I would highly recommend Venture Bros, where Warburton's talent is put to WAY better use.
It’s really off putting to see massive cartoon head shapes next to normal size and shaped heads
the more i here about Joe swanson the more my life improved. Joe didn’t roll into obscurity, he rolled into my soul and caused me heart failure
My favorite joke in all of Family Guy still is when Peter invites Evelyn to sit with Joe and Quagmire at the Clam. Peter is acting like a literally child with Evelyn, saying things like “Evelyn even let me drive the car!” and she responds with “Only in the parking lot. But you were a good little navigator.”
Quagmire has none of it and vaults over the table to leave, saying “Yeah, I just remembered I gotta get the fuck out of here” or something like that.

*Cleveland - Annoying and just racial jokes
There’s something so oddly alluring about Family Guy when at a young age.
9:37 I like how he says the kill thing without censoring it here
Joe has a great potential both as a funny character and more complex one.
What I really want to see is a spin off of family guy where joe, stewey, and Brian all realise how far the rest of the town has fallen into madness (referring to how bad the writing and characters are in modern family guy) and all deciding to leave town together
So they leave, and the show is about them all trying to find a place to settle down and just live, but the new characters the trio meet are actually realistic characters that aren’t really fazed by an extremely smart unaging baby and a sapient immortal dog
I just think that would be an interesting show concept
The length of this video is highly appropriate, given the character under examination. Nicely done
Damn with how little Joe was brought up in the family Guy all episodes video, it's interesting to see that he did have THIS much prominence
Let's get a serious character analysis of Herbert
I have two of the Joe Swanson action figures that became a meme a few years back. It's sad to see how such a still iconic character has kinda become just sort of there, when he was such a fundamental character in the early and mid seasons of the show for some of its best episodes.
This man had the unmitigated gall to reuse the intro from the Brian video and I absolutely love it 🤣
Joe feels like the Meg of peters friends if I’m being honest, the blunt of most jokes and is basically a punching bag
At this point a talking baby is the most sensical thing about this show
Honestly I was reading something and I heard the opening of "when I was a young kid I liked the adult comedy series Family Guy." It really kind of hit home how much all of our parents kind of did not care what we watched.

LS Mark has provided me infinitely more entertainment than Family Guy has in my life.
Joe’s screaming is the best is the best thing about his modern portrayal
