Out of all the Illumination Movies I hear about, whether it be Despicable Me, Minions, The Lorax, or Secret Life of Pets, the one I tend to hear the most praise towards is the Sing Franchise; Sing and Sing 2, so I was left wondering... Are The Sing Movies Any Good?

sing 1 is boring as hell but the seth macfarlane mouse is such a funny character to me. like, every other character is meant to be super likable and relatable, but then you have this character who's just an unapologetic asshole to everyone around him. he doesn't even have like a redemption arc, he just indirectly causes the theater to be destroyed, doesn't help fix it unlike everyone else, shows up at the end, delivers the best performance in the movie, then fucking dies

Literally the only character that i didn't cringed when singing a licensed or an existing song... Johnny is close but still cringed a little bit... i kinda wished that the Sing movies has original songs rather than doing a cover so it's less cringe

“It’s just a kids movie” is a terrible excuse because kids are impressionable and therefore we should be harsher on childrens media, not easier.
This. These people are indirectly saying "It's shit and I have no problem showing my kids shit."
I wonder how many of those "it's just a kids movie" people have children of their own. I hope that actual parents don't think that way and instead try to show their children something that doesn't turn them into mouth breathing idiots.

this is so dramatic and a weird comment. If it was a children's movie spreading bad messages or glorifying racism that's different but the criticisms are that the movie was too uplifting , predictable and cookie cutter, so this comment makes zero sense. As long as the movie has a good message its a good children's movie, having amazing philosophical storylines, does not make a children's movie good

The “My Way” and “I’m Still Standing” scenes are the only things I liked from Sing. The covers are legitimately good. I don’t remember his name but the Gorilla’s VA was so good at singing an Elton Jon song, to the point that he played Elton himself in Rocketman, and Seth can really sing good. His cover of My Way and just the whole mouse character in general were great. But that’s it, that’s all that was good in the movie.

You know, my favorite part of Sing 2 was when the wolf boss almost murdered Moon. It was mostly the only time I actually cared what was happening bc Moon looked absolutely terrified, the one time I felt real emotion from the movie.
I hate that people defend bad movies for “just being a kids movie” but then treat another kids movie like it’s the greatest thing to ever exist without acknowledging that most kids movies are terrible

But I feel like people judge kid's movies out of context and often to an adult's standards of humor and story, when that simply isn't the movie's purpose. Maybe you don't like them because they're not made for you.
Kids like dumb stuff. Kid's movies are going to cater to that, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's fine to not like whatever movies you want, but remember that if it's entertaining to kids, it's succeeding at its purpose (however low that bar to success may be)

@@thekitkatlizard8661 I also feel like expecting any “good” kid’s movie to also appeal to an adult audience is asking for too much. IMO only the best of the best movies land with every age range. I like a lot of kid’s movies, but as an adult, I go into them knowing they’re aiming for a child’s sense of humor. I like a lot of them for being dumb, silly fun.
I do think the chameleon secretary has a clever character design. She has a false eye so she is often looking in 2 different directions, which is a neat way to depict a defining characteristic of chameleons. (Their eyes move independently of each other to help spot prey)

I just found out that the character model for the dog girl in sing 2 and gru's wife from despicable me 2 are exactly the same. They even were the same dress. Illumination recycling models to save that dollar.

You see, when listening to the Sing soundtrack, if you turn that brain on for just a second, you quickly realize: “Wait, can’t I just listen to this, but sung by the original artist?”
Sing apparently is part of the reason why Taron Edgerton got the role to play Elton John in Rocketman and that's the one good thing to come from that movie

I was gonna come down here and mention this. His cover of that Elton John song, along with him bonding with Elton on the set of Kingsman, is what got him the role, and that definitely makes Sing worth it in my book. Rocketman was an amazing movie, and I wish it was acknowledged more. I'm a bit frustrated with Bohemian Rhapsody, since it was an ok biopic that came out and got so much praise, and I feel like if it hadn't come out the year before Rocketman, Rocketman would have gotten more attention and awards.

I liked Mike’s story the most because he actually had a story that could stand on its own and actually be more interesting than the movie itself. Meena was my least favorite character because she came across as overhyped and ridiculously shy. Are we supposed to believe that she’s the best singer who rallies everyone together to build the theater back up when she spent most of the movie throwing a pity party that Buster enabled?
I’ve always hated Meena. I’m glad someone else shares this opinion too.

I had to make sure this was real. I hadn't even seen the movie and despite Mark saying that this was a real line, I was thinking 'no way they actually put that line in the movie'. So, I went and checked the script online, and lo and behold, I found it. Not only that, but just one line above, the ice cream elephant calls the sing elephant (whose name I forgot and don't care enough about to look up) 'Your Majesty'. *I am not joking.* Like, I can't tell whether or not this is supposed to be a joke about simps, or if someone in the screenwriting group was _really_ into the elephant and just masked his attraction by creating another elephant character and having him say this.

On another subject. Mike last being seen with a bear behind him, and then not even being mentioned in the second movie makes for a really good pun. Cause he's a mouse.
You kinda hit the nail on the head as to why Illumination films are difficult to talk about. I watched Sing in theaters myself and while it was far from anything I would consider good, it also wasn't that bad either. Like, I didn't feel like my money was wasted or that I was losing braincells; it was just...exactly what I expected it to be.
And that makes it hard to talk about because I can't in good conscience recommend AGAINST the film. It's not like anyone's life will be worse for having seen it, and frankly, it's just not my place to steer people away from a movie that I personally dislike but isn't doing anything all that terrible. That would be...ethically questionable to say the least. All I can really do is point people toward better films and hope to God they actually find them appealing.
Man, if the movie was just about Johnny (gorilla guy), Mouse guy (mouse guy) and Buster Moon (not the mouse guy/gorilla guy), it'd be SO much more bearable. All three's criminal related stories could be woven together so nicely. That'd be a very neat story.
Also that "Judy Hops" thing was the most sus story I've heard from a """journalist""".

What really bugged me about the first Sing movie was that Ash's whole story arc was supposed to be how she tries move on from her deadbeat and controlling boyfriend, but has Buster completely change her performance and take control of everything.

Kinda wish the performers actually interacted with each other. The sequel acts like they're all super close but in the first movie (and hell even in the sequel itself) they barely talked to each other apart from the scene where Rosita and Gunter comfort Ash after her boyfriend cheated on her. Both movies kinda just imply character development without really showing it. Like that's not inherently a bad thing, like idk if this was even intentional but I like that Ash wears mostly red clothing in the sequel wheras in the first her outfit was essentially a copy of her boyfriend's, showing that shes more confident and has moved on from him, but in a movie about people putting on a show together while overcoming their own personal issues I kinda want to actually see them bonding

I think it would've been funny to not ever have the point of view leave buster moon. So you just have all this random shit like cops, criminal gorillas, mobster bears, 24 pig kids all just show up and cause chaos with no explanation.
Probably one of the reasons why I dropped both Sing movies and eventually despise them. It's as if they barely show effort on adding intriguing dialogues between all of the characters. To be honest, I have waited for the sequel if they could tackle on building up established relationships from the first film including what is supposed to be Johnny & Meena's romance (As a matter of fact, I used to ship them and my internal feelings became real salty by the time Meena was given a foil love interest instead. Like is Illumination afraid of including a cross species love story or something!? What a ripoff!😠)
The only thing I dont agree with is that they're conning people. They're just making junk movies that the bulk wants to see. Most people are dumb. Studios are doing what people are giving them money for. It's not art, it's business.
The off screen lore about mike is more interesting than the actual lore
I think a movie SPECIFICALLY about Seth MacFarlane's mouse would've been great, a lounge singer mouse who got tied into Mafia (maybe a cat Mafia) dealings and owes them money would be such an interesting character

I felt like Sing was too unfocussed. If they had chosen ANY of those characters to do a solo movie on, it would have been better. Sure, it would maybe not have been as much of a commercial success but rooting for ONE protagonist and watch them succeed at least gives more satisfaction than watching 7 of them thrown at you in the hopes that you identify with one of them.
At best, it would feel unfocussed and at worst, you see right through the facade of a movie and see it for what it is - just the minimum effort, safe bet production with the audacity to call itself "entertainment" or "art"

This exactly. Something being made for kids doesn't mean that it can't tell a compelling narrative, and yet all the big studios nowadays use "for kids" as an excuse to copy and paste the same bullshit tropey stories.

@jackislegitterrified3689 I'd say that if it's something that all ages can enjoy it's a good kids movie or series, and doesn't need to explain the basic morals that kids already know, or do lame and disgusting jokes. Take bluey for example, everyone loves that show (I even saw a video of a dog watching it) I think that as long as kids, teens, and adults like it. Then it's a good piece of media.

being fair, Johnny nailing Elton John, was pretty awesome, i can understand, that scene is a masterpiece by itself, he and Mike practically carried the movie
Honestly, besides despicable me 1 and 2, these are Illumination's best movies, which is a VERY LOW BAR TO CLEAR. They are fine movies, but they really do lack soul.
Sing’s whole plot boils down to:
“How to make a movie by using your car radio”
Car radio and the fur suits in your trunk
How to make a billion dollars with a car radio

For example, Shark's Tale has an aquatic setting, but the characters are so anthropomorphized that it could easily be a movie about humans.
By contrast, something like Toy Story prioritized making sure that the problems the characters faced were "toy problems, not human problems".
I have to somewhat disagree on the Shark Tail one; although the story would be mostly the same, they did do some interesting things with the settings for a few characters/jokes.
Like, Oscar is a cleaner fish, an actual type of fish that cleans gunk out of whales, so they made that like his job in the movie, and paralleled it to a car wash.
His boss is a pufferfish who is easily stressed, so of course he blows up whenever it happens like a real pufferfish.
And when oscar bets all his money, he bets it on a seahorse race, which is treated as a horse race.
While yes, the story would have worked mostly the same if they were all humans, you would still miss out on some jokes/characterization if they were all humans instead; sort of like Spongebob in that regard.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Sing movies. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp on musical theater, the songs will go over a typical viewers head.

Sing must be pretty high up on a list of "movies that didn't deserve a sequel but got one anyway"
To Despicable Me 2's credit, it was the last best Despicable Me Movie, due to it actually following the first film's story, as well as it still being focused on Gru, while the Minions were just a plot device. Plus some people think the 2nd Film is better then the 1st one.
and then in the 3rd one, they were given not only a spin-off (with a sequel coming in 2 months), but also a whole sub-plot in DM3

Tbh, after Minions, Illumination did kinda went downhill in favor of focusing on cashgrabs.
Don't get me wrong. I think The Grinch, the Sing movies and the first Sercet Life of Pets were some cool movies in my opinion, but they didn't have the same feel as the Despicable Me/Minions movies.
I just realised that Illumination is making the Mario Movie. This can be either a movie that is surprisingly good, a movie that is very memeable, a movie that is decent or just shit.

I feel like the reason Mike the mouse was killed off was because the directors and Illumination were offended by Seth not wanting to reprise the role.
Ironic considering he probably only took the role in the first place because at this point, he’d literally take ANY role that’s not Family Guy related.

Honestly, these films would work better as animated series rather than as movies. Because you cannot make such huge worlds and characters so quickly and so well in such a tight time frame, especially with the massive cast you have. If it was like a 25-episode season to cover these I think they'd be fine films.

Honestly, Sing 2 was one of those things where I turned my brain off and mostly enjoyed it when watching it, then I took like 2 seconds to think about it afterward was like "wait what the fuck did I just watch"
I love how after making this video mark has changed the title from "Are the Sing movies any good?" To "The Sing movies are awful." Like he time to think it over and got more pissed off at the movies.
One thing that confuses me about the movie that few people already pointed out is, like...why animals? What's the point of having this movie feature anthropomorphic animal characters when they don't take even utilize certain traits of animals? Like at least have a dog pissing on a fire hydrant or a sheep having a "b-a-a-a" speech tic, or even a grizzly devouring a jar of honey and stealing someone's picnic basket. Literally BEAR MINIMUM EFFORT!
This movie could have human characters and it would still be the same movie.
Illumination would probably be then accused of relying on cliched animal stereotype jokes, let's be honest.

While they dont use their animal traits it is aquick and cheap way of making characters stand apart from each other
yea like i dont mind that much that theyre anthro animals but I do wish they did more with their world. The only things I can think of is Ash shooting her quills when she gets emotional (which porcupines cant actually do), Buster's small size allowing him to crawl through small spaces, and the gorilla dad escaping jail by breaking the wall and and scaling buildings while he escapes. other than that theyre just living in a normal California-esque city
Kind of agree with Unknown. The fact that the characters are anthropomorphic animals is honestly the best thing about the movies. Sure, they could have been told with humans, but why not animals? It adds more variance to the characters asthetics, which honestly makes them more appealing then they would be if they were humans.
I do agree that it would have been nice to see something tying it in, though.
Well there's character design reasons and even marketing reasons (animals make younger audiences pay attention I suppose) tho you are right about it not being truly used more othern than a couple of jokes here and there unlike a world like Zootopia were the plot and world literally depend on them being animals. I suppose that was Illumination's logic,make it animals so they pay attention to us,and again,character variety (even if that can be obtained easily with humans,especially animated ones)
I’m surprised so many people give Illumination’s anthropomorphic animal designs a pass, I think they look awful. Particularly Porsha, they literally gave her the most freakishly long legs they could. They learned nothing from when they designed Max’s owner from Secret Life. Same goes for her dad, they just put a wolf head on Gru’s body.

The only scene I've watched is the gorilla voiced by Taron Egerton singing "I'm Still Standing". It's probably the main highlight of the film for me.

See, this is why I'm very worried about the Mario movie. I know I know, Miyamoto's overseeing things and it's delayed but will that really be enough. Illumination hasn't made a movie that surpassed mediocre since Despicable Me 1 and has shown that it's willing to do the most cost effective moves to make as much money back as possible. Excuse me if I don't have much faith in them at all.

For as much as a bad rap he's gotten for some questionable decisions in other aspects his biggest misstep regarding the Mario series itself were the suggestions he gave to Tanabe during the production of Sticker Star that were taken to the extreme. The guy has a clear vision for the series but he isn't opposed to Mario doing whacky stuff that breaks the norm (as proven by him approving of all of Odyssey's ideas besides the New Donkers, which he came around to anyways), so him spearheading the movie seems like the perfect fit.

The sing movies have some of the worst trailers I've ever seen. Despite being meh movies, the trailers spoil the entire thing and ruin any potential surprises.

I legitimately am worried for the Mario movie considering Illumination’s track record, I’d have liked it if Dreamworks Animation got the reins.

I think the point I agree with the most and needs to be brought up more is the point that there is a supreme lack of style in these movies. As someone who cares a lot about artistic direction, style is incredibly important to making any piece of art stick and be unique. Whether it be a game, a movie, a song or just an illustration, it's the firm belief of me - and many other artists I'm sure - that the fingerprints of the artist are just as important as the art itself, and with these shallow movies, there is hardly any artistic style and therefore no artistic substance.

@@Imperviousdragon Good is spiderverse, this is the equivalent of a boiled potato in movie form. Perfectly edible (and cheap) but if it's your favorite or you call it good you're actually insane. Only good thing to come out of it is the scene where the lion points a gun at the screen.

@@demetrian7856 Yes, but what you might see as a flaw others might actually like. Take this one game I'm playing, for example. I actually like it's overly happy, cutesy and wholesome tone, but some people might prefer a game that's grittier and less optimistic, which I tend not to like.
One thing I can say about Illumination is that I usually find them fun to watch. They may not have the best stories, but I can't help but like the character designs in some of them. Other people actually don't like the artstyle, though, and that's fine. But usually the movies tend to be harmless, being derivitave and generic at worst, though usually just okay at best.

One thing from the Sing 2 trailer, didn’t bother seeing the film I didn’t care, that stood out to me was that the trainer was a proboscis monkey. As an animal nerd, I thought that was interesting that they used a fairly obscure animal.

Funny story: I was super sick at the beginning of the year (not sure if it was THE sickness or just a really bad cold). One morning during the early stages, I woke up around 4-5 AM and felt awful. So I went down to make myself some oatmeal thinking that would make me feel better. During my disillusioned state, I decided to watch the first Sing for whatever reason. I ate my oatmeal, curled up on the couch and brought it up on demand. I didn't even make it five minutes into the film before I turned it off and went back to bed because I started feeling dizzy and nauseous. My body physically couldn't handle this movie.
While funny I'm just gonna press X to doubt that it was that awful of a movie. Also if you aren't sure whether it was or wasn't then rejoice for even if you had it, it was so mild that you aren't sure. I'm coming off of having it for a second time now and there was no question either time for me that my test would be positive. Last year it took me down for 3 weeks and put me borderline at whether they were going to admit me to the hospital or try the monoclonals. Thankfully it wasn't that bad this time but still plenty bad enough that I knew what it was before the test. It just didn't screw with my oxygen levels for more than a day this time though.
Maybe the bright saturation gave you a headache

that'd actually be really cool. it'd give alot more time to give different character interactions and flesh them out more. its why some movies fail greatly- they only have so much time to flesh out all their characters in a 1 hour 30 minute timespan

I actually liked the sequel even more than the original, which is almost always a rarity for me. The jokes just seemed fresher, and the song choices were catchier, in my opinion.
