- Sting Englishman in New York live 2022 Instrumental cover by Guthrie Govan on guitar and Zak Barrett on soprano saxophone. "Englishman in New York" is a song by English singer Sting, from his second studio album ...Nothing Like the Sun, released in October 1987. Branford Marsalis played soprano saxophone on the track, while the drums were played by Manu Katché and the percussion by Mino Cinélu. Sting wrote the song about the famous eccentric and gay icon Quentin Crisp, who is the "Englishman" of the title. The song was composed not long after Crisp had moved from London to an apartment in the Bowery in Manhattan. Sting had met him and Crisp remarked jokingly to the musician that he "looked forward to receiving his naturalisation papers so that I can commit a crime and not be deported." When Sting asked him what kind of crime, he answered, "Something glamorous, non-violent, with a dash of style. Crime is so rarely glamorous these days." Sting included this story in the liner notes of his album ...Nothing Like The Sun.
Watch Guthrie Govan play Englishman In New York on his Charvel signature guitar alongside Sax player Zak Barrett on stage in Southend-on-Sea, England UK May 15th 2022. The instruments do the song lyrics! Every guitarist can learn a lesson on jazz blues and rock guitar fusion watching Guthrie Govan playing guitar live. Guthrie Govan's guitar improvisation technique is second to none. Rick Beato recently made a video declaring Guthrie Govan the best rock guitarist in the world ever seen in his career.
Guthrie Govan live tour is underway in America with his band The Aristocrats. Guthrie Govan is an English guitarist and guitar teacher endorsed by Charvel Guitars with his own signature model. His guitar music can be heard on major Hollywood films from X-Men to the lastest Dune movie thanks to his work with Hans Zimmer. Guthrie is a guitar player known for his work with the bands the Aristocrats, Asia, GPS, the Young Punx and the Fellowship, as well as his solo project Erotic Cakes. More recently, he has collaborated with Steven Wilson and Hans Zimmer. He is a noted guitar teacher, working with the UK magazine Guitar Techniques, Guildford's Academy of Contemporary Music, Lick Library, and formerly the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. Govan was named "Guitarist of the Year" by Guitarist magazine in 1993. Guthrie Govan guitar lessons have taught guitarists from all over the world who could see a guitar lesson on sites like Lick Library.
The original Englishman in New York song is composed in the key of B-minor. It is mainly the same chord progression throughout the song (except in the bridge): Em - A - Bm. The functions in the key of the chords are iv - VII - i. The soprano saxophone that plays over the song mainly plays the minor scale in Bm. In the bridge the chords change to D - A - Bm - F#, G - A - F# - Bm. This corresponds with III - VII - i - V, VI - VII - V - i.
The single was released in February 1988 as the third single from the album, but only reached #51 on the UK Singles Chart. In the US, "Englishman in New York" peaked at #84 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in April 1988 and reached #32 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart that same month. However, the single was more successful in continental Europe, becoming a hit in several countries, reaching the Top 40 (and sometimes the Top 20) in France, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, etc. "Englishman in New York" was also a Top 20 hit in Ireland. In South Africa, it peaked at no. 9.
In 1990, just prior to the release of his third studio album The Soul Cages, Sting's record label licensed Dutch DJ and producer Ben Liebrand to remix "Englishman in New York" and subsequently released it as a single. The remix played around with the introduction and some of the instrumentation, but the essence of the song remained the same. The new version was commercially successful, reaching number 15 in the UK charts in mid-1990.
In 2010, Sting re-recorded the song in an orchestral version for his album Symphonicities.
"Englishman/African In New York", a reworking of the song recorded with African artist Shirazee was released as a non-album digital-only single on 19 March 2021. Shirazee had previously covered the song as "African in New York" with Sting's approval. Sting and Shirazee released a music video and performed the song on ABC's Good Morning America.

As a guitarist I'm a big fan of Guthrie already but WTF THIS SAX SOUNDS SO GOOD
Go follow Zak barrett on Instagram and Facebook! He is the man!
Took the words out of my mouth, (and a few others, I reckon).
you probably should check out Guthrie Govan & The Fellowship. I'm not gonna say anything else but I think you'll like it.
If you like guitar and soprano sax, you can also listen to Mouvements from Birelli Lagrene :)
@@encyclopractica I was responding to a guy saying he enjoyed the sound of the sax. He didn't seem familiar with The Fellowship.
Sure it's what we are doing but he wouldn't know that from reading the title.
LMAO Guthire ending the song with the Simpson's outro, brilliant.
For those that don't know it's the still scene of the audience watching the big screen in the theater at the end of every episode of The Simpsons
Guthrie loves the Simpsons hence his first album being called erotic cakes... Homer comes to our real world in an episode and sees a sign that says erotic cakes and reads it aloud as only homer can OHHH EROTIC CAKES.
Guthrie is perhaps the finest improvisation guitarist since Allan Holdsworth. Guthrie can play any style which gives him an unbelievable advantage over most anyone.
Check Pat Metheny
Frank Gambale
@@yoelcapoful Been a fan for years. Pat is great but he can't play the styles that Guthrie can and change mid song.
@@robertpalenkahu3259 Love Frank, but just as I said about Pat Matheny, he can't play the styles Guthrie does and switch up in mid phrase.
@@SIXSTRING63 Pat's impro vocabulary is levels above Guthrie's. Not trying to put anyone down, but that's a no brainer.
Two guys making music not to impress or to show off, but to enjoy and have fun. Musicianship at its finest. This was so beautiful and refreshing. GG is from another planet.
So happy you enjoyed it 👍👍
Yes, he is. And still that same humble musician and dude he has allways been. Connection with these incredible players are so good. But GG still surprises his fellow player in the end with that M9🤣. That audience were so lucky...
Actually I was impressed 😆😆
GG is a fking demigod.
Guthrie is impossibly good. This kind of interaction just really highlights how amazing of a player and musician he is.
What's also amazing here is how "Englishman In New York" has evolved into a Jazz Standard. I'm all for it!
This is why GG is the best guitarrrist and one of the best musicians alive. not cause the technique, not cause the speed.. cause of how many kind of different músic languages he mastering
En México existimos varios guitarristas con las mismas características de este guitarrista, tocamos muy diferentes y variados estilos, desde un Take Five, polkas, música caribeña, Rock, jazz, flamenco... ect. Saludos, 🙏💯🎸☀️
Guthrie slips between guitar comping, walking bass, bop lines, and soloing (and reggae dub!) seamlessly. I envy that..
Excellent ALL AROUND. Guthrie's bass-plus-rhythm comping beginning around 1:38 would make Charlie Hunter proud! 🙏
Guthrie's level of improvisation is out of this world, no words can properly describe his virtuosity.
Govan can play any style he wants!
Amazing saxplayer, then you have Guthrie. simply untouchable.
Dude, his Gracie Films theme at the end... super obscure, but hilarious for Simpsons fans
sounds like King of wishful thinking by Go west, to me.
how lucky are the people who were in that club! Also it's so obvious that Guthrie is enjoying this so much. What a performance!
Gandalf on the guitar
Lovely to see the mischievous joy on Guthrie’s face as he quotes Teddy Bears’ Picnic and gets the sax guy to join in.
3:36 - so melodic and catchy entrance by Guthrie
Two great musicians that love music, what else can we ask for?
For sure!
amazing guthrie and zak!!!
Guthrie is soooooo dam good. Incredible musician's.
This made me involuntarily smile. It's too good to not enjoy. Both musicians are talented, I'm here thanks to Guthrie, but stayed for the music itself.
bro I love Guthrie is probably the best player in the whole world, but the saxo man is a fucking legend I swear
He definitely is! Zak Barrett 🎷
So entertaining and musically brilliant. Guthrie Govan is so unbelievably versatile and technically gifted.
Guthrie is so good he literally became an Englishman in newyork for the song
finally, tea is better than coffee and beeer. cheers 🍻
How good is Guthrie Govan at playing anything you throw at him. This is pure gold.
Even GG doesn't look like he can believe it at one point there. Amazing stuff here.
Definitely!
So natural playing. Two great musicians are just talking using their instruments. Thank you, ERS!
Glad to be of service Alex 👍
Guthrie and Matheus Mancuso what a feat
My God, he just feels it and goes. He is willing the other musicians to challenge him, any style, doesnt matter. Musical genius
It's a amazing when a Jam Session sound's like a conversation between a musicians.
guthrie keeps looking at me 😁

A new discovery! My new favourite guitar player
the first guitarist to keep time with his eyebrows
Haha yep!
This is the best. The fun on stage throse 2 incredible musicians have, quoting away, improvising, absolutely incredible. Modern day Charlie Parker & John Coltrane.
Wonderful impro by these 2
What can’t he do. Please release more Guthrie, grace us with your genius!
Awesome ready or not phrase from 4:18
Good catch!
Guthrie's eyebrows keeping time here.
One of the best covers of any song i heard so far...i mean...Guthrie Govan...come on! Zak is a beast too!
Yes HUGE props must be given to Zak Barrett for this performance!
Man! How I love 🎷too! 💓🔥
That’s one of the best call and response sections I’ve ever seen.
Magnificent!
Guy's great!
If you listen at 5:55 GG is about to start the return riff back to the main song but realises Zak isn’t quite ready so turns it into something else. Amazing improvisation
Good eye and ear!
Hehe I don't know who counted wrongly. Zak makes this gesture, pointing at his head at 5:58. Guthrie quickly corrects as well, so they end up back to the main theme together. Class act.
Wow, yeah you're right. I heard the beginning of the phrase - Guthrie is lightning quick at switching it to something else, you can see the shock of realisation cross his face! Wow. I'm honestly amazed at the neurons firing in his brain here, very good spot!
Dropping the Gracie Films theme at the end was slickkk 😄
Never noticed that Guthrie keeps the beat, and conducts, with his eyebrows!!
So accomplished
That was possibly the best ending to all that beautiful madness, Guthrie goat Govan!
When he does the staccato arpeggios, it sounds like rain.
Hope I won't be butchered here but I like Guthrie 10 times more when playing
clean tone
🙏🙏
Greatest guitar player of our time!
Zak and Guthrie I know them both and they're playing and personality both work so well together both are genuine decent people who appreciate any one who's come along to see them great to see them having fun.
Thanks for checking in and watching John!
Hold my Beer 😀😀😀😀
In the very beginning to much spicy for me, but after walking bass he is proving why this man is one of the best world guitarists. AWESOME!!!!
The best guitar player alive plays at small pubs wirh his looper and some folks❤
Great time to be alive!
The quotes on both sides... Pretty sure I missed most of them. They're actually meming while playing some insanely good music.
An appropriately chosen tune for the occasion..Sir Govan in his element
The most expressive eyebrows in music.
More musical elegance is simply not possible.
Guthrie is excellent as well as playful like a child! I love this guy!
This is when you know an individual is a gifted musician. The ability to play different styles equally well with an authentic flavor says it all. The man can shred like it's nobody's business but play some solid, beautiful jazz accompaniment and solos just as naturally.
There is no jazz here but clever jamming over a reggae vamp
This was jammed over a lot at the guildford acm and when they played together in places like the basement over chelmsford way. Awesome memories playing and being taught by him.
Very cool. His brother still teaches guitar in Chelmsford. I never got to see him at The Basement
@@EssexRecordingStudios I hope Seth is doing well and making a good living from teaching, such a hard industry which ever route you take ☹️ I was hoping that when he used to play bass on some of their gigs, that he would have the same success as Guthrie ☹️
Bad ass!
What did I just witness 🤯 🎸 🔥 🎷
Ready or not, here I come, you can't hide
Gonna find you and take it slowly...
I need a bigger like button.
I just finished the video. Guthrie (needless to say) is an amazing guitar player, the improvisations and the call and response between him and Zak is amazing! And may i say, Zak Barret is a very musical sax player! He has the chops obviously, but he makes the notes sound very musical, very pleasing to the ears. Thanks to you uploader, i just heard some real music today!
love it when GG does this jazzy stuff
That ending 😅 guthrie is the musical meme lord!
Even Guthrie's eyebrows can't stop dancing.
Total genius, total beauty- thank you for this unbelievable ear candy 🙏🙏🙏🎼🎼🎼🎸✌️🌏
There is a crop of young guitarists coming up, but Guthrie Govan proves that the old masters can still astound and amaze!
Other than Matteo Mancuso, not really.. And please dont name fake hipster bedroom emo guitarists like Tim Henson or Ichika Nito or I must laugh..
@@FSMusic86 Yes, Matteo Mancuso is at the top of my list, but there are others too like Mateus Asato, Andre Nieri, Lari Basilio, Plini, etc. that I think are superb. I've heard of Tim Henson and Ichika Nito before... it's not really my type of music (kinda boring and mechanical), but to be fair, they're quite creative. The advantage of the next generation guitarists is that they have full access to all the great music that came before them. Through the internet and technology they can dissect, analyze, and learn from the best. Much, much more than what I had when I was growing up.
I don't even think Govan is that old. He seens to have and old wizard look by purpose
Guthrie isn't even that old
Guthrie really is somethin else
Jazz duo improvise a mix tape inspired by one after another song to the tune of several others all accompanied by Guthrie Govan eyebrows channelling James Joyce ventriloquizing Molly Bloom "I asked him with my eyes to ask me again"
Make no mistake, people!
There's no other better improviser in the world of guitar than this Monster of a Man -- Mr Guthrie called Govan!! ☝🔥👑
Simple as that! ☺🙏
Good times had by all 🎼👍
Branford would be proud
Amazing performance! Two guys just playing their instrument and creating a melodic adventure using a known song as the foundation. You can tell they are real musicians. By the way, Guthrie Govan can play anything... it's scary to think how good he is...
Guthrie is the best guitarist, mr. guitarist 😍
Thanks for recording this.
Superb view on both performers, superb sound as well.
I agree what Rick Beato said that Guthrie is the scariest Rock guitarist today, in addition I'd take out the "rock" and stick only the guitarist.
There's no such thing as the best, but Guthrie can play all genre with his own signature style and are distinctively different one another.
If Guthrie Govan isn't the greatest guitarist in this day and age I don't know who is!
me 😎
@@JulioLeonFandinho me too
Steve vai, Joe Satriani
Watch them play with him.. different league
Birelli
Never heard a soprano sax sounds so beautiful. the best cover of this song on yt.
Totally agree! Zak Barrett is the man! Please share this out!
Branford plays it just as sweet.
@@onamemmet
Sure does
Just amazing, and he has always been good.
The chemistry between these guys is awesome
I am always fascinated when two formidable musicians "converse" with their instruments. Thanks for sharing this beautiful performance
Thanks for listening!
Beautiful playing team.
Holy AMAZEBALLS!!!!!
Just brilliant!!!
Just incredible! 🤯
Absolutely stunning!! 👏👏👏👏
Of course guthrie nailed it, he is the alien.
👽🎸👽
hell yeah 🔥🔥☺️
Just wow.
YES!!❤
Love Guthrie - he is a "FreakShow" this guy is just beyond Phenomenal. He Inspires me to practice more. oNe LovE from NYC
Allan holdworths is so much better in jazz ... No comparison
@@Jeff4014 no need to compare. They are simply different guitar players.
@@Migler1 no body's comparing, we are just conferming that Allan holdworths is a jazz master...where gruthrie govan is just learning how to play jazz. It's not a comparison it's a difference
@@Jeff4014 🤡
incredible performance !!!!!
Absolute incredible!
Beautiful.
Beautiful work!
